Pleasantly surprised by my lunch here the other day. It's a very simple place without full table service; if you want to dine in, you order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you in takeout containers. There is self serve water and green tea along with condiments and utensils. They do also have plates and bowls if you want to avoid eating out of plastic. The lunch specials are outrageously good deals - around $8 (varies slightly depending on protein) and it comes with a main dish, rice, and your choice of a spring roll or soup. I had the Szechuan chicken with fried rice and hot and sour soup. While the flavor of the sauce was just okay, I was impressed with the portion size and generosity with the chicken. The vegetables were cooked well - not too soggy or overdone. The rice was good as well. Oddly, I found the hot and sour soup to be the star of the meal. My mom ordered the Mongolian beef and my uncle got the General Tso's chicken and both of them enjoyed their lunches. Place is clean and the sit-down area is well-maintained. Stayed the night in Ann Arbor for a hospital visit, and was really craving some good Chinese food. Found this spot about 5 minutes from my hotel and ordered the Shrimp and Garlic stirfry combo, and ordered the General Tso's chicken combo with shrimp fried rice and egg roll. Panda House has become our "go-to" Chinese place in town. I still maintain that it's not the best Chinese I've ever had but the prices are right and they're quick and easy for pick up. Most recently I wanted some comfort food and enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken, pork fried rice, and egg roll dinner combo. It was a ton of food and just $9! That's a wild deal. The chicken arrived crispy, perhaps a little over battered but that's par for the course for most S&S chicken dishes. I'm VERY particular about my Chinese food. Its a hit or miss going to many Chinese food places. My grandma in law comes here and since I was on her side of town, I decided to get some on the way home. I ordered general tso chicken and shrimp fried rice. My total was $20 (ugh why is Chinese food so expensive). Customer service was pleasant when I came to pick up my food. Once home, I actually did enjoy my food. Their food tastes like family style food, they also have Chinese traditional dish menu, some of them are oriental cantonese style, Sichuan style and etc. I like their Sichuan style green beans, beef chowfan. Sometimes, they have weekly special menu, like desert bowl, chicken feet. You definitely could find some dish from Panda House. Delivery was more than 25 minutes late and food was slightly under cooked and lukewarm upon arrival. Egg drop soup was good and hot as usual. The chicken dish I got didn't have any bite-size pieces of chicken, just small stringy pieces. And the itty bitty rice takeaway box is comical. Pretty restaurant interior. They have some really neat carved wood artwork. I got takeout, which was made quickly and really hit the spot. I was getting sick and needed won ton soup. Limited time and needed to be close - urg! I stopped here again. It wasn't horrible but it was still bad. I ordered a large won ton soup, shrimp spring roll, and green beans lunch special with egg roll. The large won ton just only dumplings in broth. They dished it out of the soup vat they filled for lunch cups. No veggies or even green onion. The dumplings were at least cooked, and not raw dough wrappers like before. The shrimp roll was the best part of the meal. Crispy, larger and just right. Don't order the green beans. Ever. They weren't cooked. I asked for them spicy and they came swimming in a red oil but no flavor or spice. I like al dente veggies but these just weren't cooked. Someone should tell them that they need to blanch then stir fry. The egg roll that came with the lunch wasn't edible. The interior is nice. It would be a nice place to stop for lunch. The servers are indifferent and unorganized. There are too few for the lunch crowd. I really wish they would get it together. They could be rockstars in this area if the food was better. read more
