This review reflects my experience dining out with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that requires me to maintain a diet free of gluten (including cross contact). Upon arrival, we were seated at a six-person table immediately to the left of the entryway. Our server stopped by once a majority of our party had arrived, taking orders for drinks. As the bar did not have orange juice on hand, I selected the Fritz's Riesling; it was off dry and refreshing. Throughout the night, I had three glasses of wine. For dinner, I identified three dishes as potential options to discuss with our server. Unfortunately, even though the menu is marked, clearly, with allergen initialisms (for vegetarians and those who are dairy- and gluten-free), many of the 'gluten-free' dishes are not free of cross contact. My first two choices--the crispy chicken wings and the wok-fried rice noodles--were both unsafe due to gluten cross contamination, so I ordered the spicy beef and rice bowl. The server who dropped it off did flag that it was prepared for someone with celiac disease, which I appreciated. The egg on top was cooked over easy (which I would have requested fried hard had I known), however, so I needed to remove it. Otherwise, the dish was good--well seasoned, complex, and filling. Still, it was disappointing to watch my friends enjoy the renowned chicken while I had to accept my third choice. Thankfully, I did not experience symptoms of gluten exposure in the days following our meal. When dinner concluded, we had a single person cover the total, using Venmo to split individual orders later. A 20-percent automatic gratuity was added to our bill prior to applying D.C. tax. I'm glad I tried Maketto, but I do not plan to return. I would encourage those with celiac disease to select several dishes as options in case the one they would like to order is not truly gluten-free. read more

I would describe the food here as modern fusion food. I learned that the chef is actually Taiwanese and his wife is Cambodian and some influence on the food. My friend got a pork dish and said it was super spicy, not what she was expecting. I got the noodle salad dish wish chicken, and the chicken was boiled and bland, and I wish I would have gotten the tofu dish instead. We also got some mocktails, and they were definitely Americanized drinks. I think the best dish is probably their fried chicken dish, which our friend got. Overall, the food is fine, and the service is great, but I would not say that this is genuine Cambodian food. read more

it's winter restaurant week, the perfect excuse to try MANY items from Maketto - the best item was the sourdough scallion pancake. this was showstopping. so fluffy with a perfect crisp around the outside and a mushy doughy center filled with scallions. such a unique spin on the classic dish - my second favorite item was the brisket. something about the bright fresh puree and cucumber slaw on the meat was incredible. the meat was moist and tender but had that rich smoked taste that complimented the garnishes - the chicken and ginger soup dumplings had a large chunk of chicken and not as much soup. good flavor! the cucumber salad was a wonderful portion size and bathed in a chili sauce with plenty of onions and such. for cucumber salads I prefer a sliced cucumber to absorb the sauce more but this was good - the most disappointing dish was the "strange flavor eggplant" there were definitely many flavors ... none of which were the eggplant. tasted like a plain tahini hummus with some cucumbers and pickles. couple bland eggplants inside pieces tossed amongst the cucumbers. - it is a very cute restaurant. the workers were incredibly kind, bringing us champagne and ice cream for my friends birthday. our waiter helped me decide on dishes. however it was hard to ignore the tables on either side of us frustrated as their courses came out in the wrong order with strange delays. read more

Just left Maketto for the first time and I am super full and happy! When we walked in I was a bit concerned this was an order with QR code only kind of place, but thank goodness they had regular service too! To drink, I had the Angkor What and the Brothers and Sisters. The Angkor What was really good, but almost had a bitter aftertaste. My personal preference was the Brothers and Sisters which was slightly sweet and absolutely delicious. To eat, we shared the pork bao buns, Gruyère dumplings with beef chili, lo mein, and fried chicken. The bao buns were delightful - fluffy outside, flavorful inside. The Gruyère dumplings we'd pass on next time; though good, they didn't fit with the other things we ordered and were really heavy and filling. We really liked the flavor of the lo mein- we ordered it with the pork, which was good. Beware though there were more fat chunks in the pork than I'd like! Finally, the fried chicken. Was pleasantly surprised at how good the food and drinks were. I just chose the 1st place we stumbled on H st for my family. I tried the gruyere dumplings with chili oil and the fried chicken. Usually, you'll find a restaurant be good at one type of food or the other and I did not expect both of these to be good. I love dumplings in general and everyone at our table enjoyed the fried chicken. Also, my father-in-law is usually very picky with wine and the waiter recommended the Clovis for him and he liked it to my surprise. Felt like they took the beef chili from a different dish and plopped pieces of mushy, cheesy dough on top. - Drunken shrimp fried rice was waaay too salty. The flavor was good but the breading is too thick that the sauce remained outside only and didnt flavor the chicken. The meat was a bit dry and not juicy. It was too thick too. Noodle soup was kind of like pho but lacked flavor. Steamed bao was good but not sure if the hoisin sauce worked with the baos. We went here for restaurant week and had the absolute best experience! The food was insanely good, the service was fabulous, and it was such a cute restaurant. We loved trying all of the food options for a really great price point. We had the spicy cucumber salad and veggie spring rolls to start then had the pork steamed bao (which were incredibly delicious) and the sourdough scallion pancake (wowww) followed by the wok fried rice noodles and smoked brisket Cambodian style. We're visiting DC and decided to venture out of the main tourist area to eat at Maketto for lunch. The interior is comfortable, coffee cafe vibe with dining tables. There's a nice full service bar and an outdoor patio that accommodates outdoor seating. The service was excellent, very friendly gentlemen who made it feel like we were invited to their home. We had the sourdough scallion pancake, which if you've tried the traditional Taiwanese version, this is a very unique take while still having the same flavor of the traditional scallion pancake, just much chewy-er, which we enjoyed. The crystal shrimp dumplings, which is like the dim sum Har gao, sat atop tuk trey, which is a fish sauce based dipping sauce. I've never thought to try this with fish sauce, it was okay, but I'd prefer soy sauce. Ginger chicken soup dumplings were very tasty. The filling/ soup was just right. Wok fried rice noodle was delicious, it had a nice spicy kick to it. The noodles were wide and chewy, tasted really fresh and the sauce coated each noodle without being too wet. And finally the smoked dry aged brisket, yummy! We were getting full by the time this arrived to the table, as portions are very generous. But the brisket was so tender, and paired with the cucumber salad (that reminded me of Thai papaya salad) was such a nice bite. The roti that came on top of the brisket was fluffy. A definite stop for anyone visiting or even living in DC. Chef Erik is very creative, you can tell when you eat here. Will surely return on our next visit to DC! read more

Maketto was surprisingly good. I say surprising because you walk in and find a "cultural" space -- a space defined by fashion and pop images, so I wasn't expecting too much from the food scene. But the different dishes we ordered was solid and I think it goes well with the ambiance of contemporary, electric and simple. I'm hoping that the recent appearance on Somebody feed Phil won't have this place bustling too much as I think its quiet chicness is something that defines them. Maketto is one of the coolest places as a whole on H St. I appreciate that it's a forward thinking restaurant with a Cambodian/Taiwanese fusion menu that is categorized by portion size and price. Been dying to try this restaurant so when I saw the special mileage Plus event I jumped on it for 12,000 miles a ticket. There seemed a snafu in communicating once the tickets were purchased. But that wasn't the restaurants fault. I did call them about a severe allergy of my guest but they didn't seem concerned. They told me to mention it when we arrive. The place was beautifully set up. The entire restaurant was devoted to the event with long tables upstairs and downstairs. Lovely lighting inside and out. Service great. There were two drinks, beer and champagne, as choices of adult beverages. I drank the gin-based drink versus the old fashion. Both were good. The food was also awesome. We started with a shrimp dumpling, followed by a roast pork bao bun, then roast eggplant and tofu hummus, and then roasted cauliflower. All delicious. Only odd thing was food was served family style but numbering was off in terms of number of people at the table. For the second course we were served wok fried noodles, smoked short ribs, and fish curry. The custard dessert was phenomenal! Will definitely return for a regular dinner. read more

I saw they are offering lunch during restaurant week so had to make a plan to come. There were a lot of open tables when I arrived at around 11:45 am on a snowy Friday but people started to trickle in soon after. The ambiance of the restaurant is really cool - they are both a restaurant and a coffee shop with vintage records, clothing, and home goods for sale on the second floor. I was super curious about the sourdough scallion pancakes so I got it as my starter. It was different from the traditional flakey ones that I'm familiar with. It was thicker, the center had almost a mochi-like texture while the outer edge was fried very crispy and almost hollow and came with a ginger scallion soy sauce on top. I thought it was delicious and had fun trying something new, but I can see someone being turned off by the texture. The fried chicken sandwich was the absolute best of the meal. The chicken was HUGE, the batter super flavorful and crunchy (on the thicker side tho), and the meat very juicy. The seasoning of the chicken was unique - umami from the five spice, a nice kick, and something slightly funky (like fish sauce or shrimp paste). The cucumbers and pickled carrots and daikon were great additions to cut through the heaviness of the fried chicken. Finally, I got the egg custard tart as dessert. It looked like an egg tart but was more creme brulee in a pie crust, very delicious and not too sweet. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and service. The first and second courses came in full portions which were sufficiently large that I had leftovers enough for another meal. For dessert, I got one tart instead of the two you'd get from the a la carte menu. With some back-of-the-envelope math, it came to $26 in total for the $25 RW deal so not so much of a discount. There are pricier items to choose from the list if you want to make the most out of it, but to be honest, I just needed a reason to come and was very satisfied with my choices:) read more

You'd like this place if you're young and hip and like to mix up your flavors. If you're anything close to traditional (like my dear Chinese pops), this may not suit your palette. Kinda weird to taste fish sauce in what you'd expect to be more of a soy sauce flavored dish. And vice versa. There are times when I'd think the dish would hit me with more of an umami blast but would just turn out to be more salty. Personally do like this place and would go back. Love the atmosphere and its hipster take on Asian flavors that you wouldn't normally put together. My personal favorite was the egg custard tart. This place is a destination! It came highly recommended by friends and it did not disappoint. In fact it exceeded our expectations. Every dish exceeded my expectations. We were in for a late lunch, mid week so it was pretty quiet. Staff could not have been better: friendly and super helpful picking out the right dishes to have and share with a group of four. The host was extremely friendly and got us seating straight away! The restaurant had a super unique vibe, with an entire wall dedicated to sneakers and eye catching displays all around showcasing records, skateboards, and cool music you can scan a QR code if you want to listen to more! The menu features small, medium, and large plates. We weren't exactly sure how to maneuver this, but we decided on the vegetable gyoza as a shared appetizer and it came with 4 pieces. For dinner, we ordered pork shoulder lo mein (medium dish, but still would not finish the whole portion!!), wok-fried rice noodles (large plate, a little bigger than medium, probably could share!) and drunken shrimp fried rice (also large!). 4 stars but....Ok so we'll start with the good, the food itself was delicious and everything that came out of the kitchen looked amazing and I also wanted to eat that. But I came in for a RW lunch and I don't think it's very much of a deal, it at all. I started with ginger soup dumplings which were good but not actually soup dumplings and while not on their regular menu, the other apps on the regular menu are generally $8 and this felt like a half portion (2 dumplings) which would equate to $4. I then ordered the fried chicken sandwich was absolutely fantastic, a top 3 chicken in dc for me and is on the regular menu for $14. Then I finished with the mochi beignets which were also great, like a normal beignets but a bit chewier and dense in a good way and paired with a nice lemon curd sauce underneath, but again this was half a normal portion (I only got 2 of the normal 4) and they are on the regular menu for $8, so I received the equivalent of $4. All said, $4 for a half portion of dumplings, $14 for the standard sandwich, and $4 for a half portion of the beignets only equals $22, whereas the menu costs $25. Even if you ordered the highest normal cost main that is on the RW menu, that is only $18 so your total would be $26 on a $25 menu. Plus they auto add a 20% gratuity. Good service though and delish food but not really worth the RW cost compared to normal. read more

I've lived blocks away from Maketto since it first opened and ordered food from here with my family a couple times, but never actually set foot into the place until today! I hate working from home so I walked over to do some work and get a coffee this morning and ended up staying for lunch. The 5-spice latte was fantastic, just enough flavor there to get you interested, but not so much that it was overwhelming or bitter. For lunch, I got the Cambodian noodle salad with pork shoulder and it was amazing! The pork had a good crisp on the outside while staying tender on the inside, and the veggies and herbs were a great accompaniment. The times we've ordered in, we got the chicken sandwich which is AMAZING, so so crispy with a fantastic sauce. I'd love to sit down and have dinner here one evening! read more

Wow I can't believe it took me so long to come to Maketto! We got a good sampling of the menu and every dish was even tastier than the last. We started with Sourdough Scallion Pancake (ginger, sesame) which was soooo good. Different from other scallion pancakes I've had but really tasty. The Crispy Gruyere Dumplings (with Chinese beef chili) were sooo good. They were salty little flavor bombs and I would definitely order them again. The Fried Chicken Sandwich was good but nothing to write home about. The Num Pang sandwich (homemade bread, pork shoulder, house spread, daikon, jalapeño) was breathtaking. I almost ordered a second one because it was so good. The Duck Noodle Soup (confit duck leg, wonton noodles, local greens, mushrooms) was like the most comforting, rich, savory bowls of soup I've had in a while. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and very spacious as well with a sort of half-inside-half-covered-outside setup. The food was a mixed bag but trended very positive. The lo mein was rich and flavorful with some extremely tender chicken as well. For two people, these two small plates and one medium plate would have been more than enough to fill us up. Sadly, the duck was not the main course we had hoped it would be. Although we loved the sides that came with it--including great kimchi, pickled okra, peanuts, and three sauces--the duck itself was not tender and even had a small bone left it in. And we were very satisfied. 1) veggie spring roll- crispy and delish! 2) pork steamed bao- the texture and flavor was really good. It wasn't too overpowering like other ones I've tried. The size was just right. 3) Crispy Gruyere Dumplings- just wow! I love cheese and this was a yaaasssss!!!!!! 4) crispy chicken wings- this thing was massive. The flavor was def there and so was the crisp. 5) Cambodia noodle salad- it was so fresh and the flavors and sauce went well together 6) Mochi Beignets- these things were kinda addicting lol not too sweet and not too chewy..it had the right amount of everything I'll def be coming back! read more

Taiwanese and Cambodian cuisine presented and interpreted here. 4.5 stars. Very nice. Spacious, well lighted, open air restaurant. Upstairs dining, downstairs and patio. Beautiful bay windows overlooking H Street. This place is pretty dope. The decor is accented with comic books, Jet magazines, t-shirts, VHS tapes, albums and various other throwback memorabilia. First floor features a wall of high-end sneakers believe it or not. Very inviting and whimsical space. Small, medium and large plates available here. Duck Noodle Soup Confit super crispy duck leg, wonton noodles, local greens, mushrooms in a robust noodle soup with a really nice spicy chili paste. Spicy cauliflower equally well executed. Browned crispy on the outside and very well flavored. Fried rice with shrimp had an amazing depth in the rice. This ain't your basic shrimp fried rice folks. This is Fried Rice ("with") shrimp, lol. It wasn't fried as dark as I typically like, but it didn't matter. The flavors were what you look for. Veggie egg rolls. Surprisingly good, and flavorful. Not a fan of the QSR code stuff which they have in the restaurant, and you order everything from your cell phone not with the server. Luckily, here the servers are available to describe and answer questions unlike some places with QSR codes that kinda basically abandon you to figure it out. Met Chef Erik too briefly who came out to say hello. He owns Toki Underground and a few others in his burgeoning empire. Nice guy. Nice date or meeting spot.
