    I'm quite impressed with the variety of flavors and preparations this restaurant has. The braised pork is one of their best sellers and evidently so, it came in this great dark liquid and the pork belly were like pillows. Very soft texture and the braising liquid was complex and flavorful. I love their aggressive use of Szechuan pepper corn in the Chili Chicken, its not for everyone but its for spice heads like myself. Its also one of those dishes that make the restaurant regionally specific which is something to look out for when you're thinking to eat Chinese food. Steamed buns were soft and pillowy with a sweet filling. Surprise dish was the pad thai, which wouldn't have those tangy-tamarind based flavors but it wasn't bad. The restaurant did lean quite greasy for me, but for this variety of dishes I appreciate them having meals that are more insightful to Chinese cuisine then simply having Chinese-American take-out dishes.

    This review is a solid 3.5. Came here during Thanksgiving weekend to change my palate with my family. We have come here before, nearly a year ago, and had a great experience. Unfortunately so much has changed since then: the original decor has changed to something more urban and traditional. Almost all orders were take-outs. We were the only folks in the dining area. We ordered many dishes from fried dumplings, shui zhu niu rou, liang pi, Mongolian beef, and fried eggplants. The star of the dining experience was liang pi, followed by fried eggplants, and Mongolian beef. However the shui zhu niu rou lacked the depth of mala spice and texture that I'm used to. The portions also came out much smaller, and the rice grain was not as good as it used to be. The grains were very grainy - we asked the server for a fresh bowl of rice but it just seems like their rice distributor or rice quality isn't up to par. Otherwise, I would love to support this business but something has got to change with the portions and ambiance. I hope the owners take this feedback seriously, whether it is doing happy hour specials or changing the rice type... wishing them the best. Again don't sleep on the liang pi!

    I've been here for dine in and pick up, and both experiences were great! The spring rolls are SOOO good - hot and crispy. The seaweed salad is delicious (and not spicy thankfully). The shrimp wonton soup was amazing (never had that before)... but the sesame chicken was the best sesame chicken I've ever had in my life! This is definitely a new fav spot!

    Very authentic Chinese food but minimal attention spent on interior space. Service is nonexistent, you have to go up to the counter to ask for anything. We ate lunch here on a Saturday and oddly we were the only diners in the restaurant. The booths are a little dirty and rundown along with the rest of the restaurant. Food is delicious and very authentic. Would return for takeout but wouldn't return for the dining experience .

    I was looking for a hot pot place and when looking through yelp pictures, everything looked really good and who can resist dim sum. Service was good. You pick your food off an iPad system and place an order directly. However, the dim sum feels overpriced. A baked BBq bun was 2 for $9.99!? They're usually $6 for 3 in other Chinese restaurants. Into the main reason I was here was for the hotpot. It was good but I expected something different. It was more a casserole than a hot pot bc it did not have the fire. Also there were only 3 different broth bases to choose from and the ingredients were already in the casserole. Northern Chinese style I suppose. The scallion pancakes were good but not enough scallions and oily.

    Wow this place is absolutely amaazing! I came here tonight with my friend and we got sooo many things! What we got: - DAN DAN NOODLES: absolutely amazing if calories were not a thing would have def ate more! we literally got two orders of it! - Chicken dumplings that came with a dumpling sauce! they were also good, the dumplings were cooked just right and were just the right kind of warmness i am super particular about this for no reason! - eggplant garlic- THIS WAS REALLY GOOD however, this could have been a bit more spicier, i will ask for it spicier next time around! - Edamame - these were good too!! :) i am not a huge edamame fan in general so i did not really eat much of this! - Spicy garlic cold wide rice noodle - SOO GOOODDDD WOW!! we mixed with chili oil and DAMN the service was amazing! the guy was super accomodating I felt bad that I kept asking for more and more to go containers but he was extremely accomodating and nice about it! the place itself was really clean and it was a standard restaraunt! they will be serving more alcohol there in the future but was not there when we went (my friend was excited about that!) I WILL DEFFFFF BE BACK!!! :) i was looking for a chiense place jsut like this!!! it think i manifested it!!

    Walked into this place at random and found out they had GLUTEN FREE orange chicken, general Tsos chicken and sesame chicken. He said there were ways to make other meals like the dry pot gluten free too. It's very cute inside with neon lights and just very aesthetic. The service for air in was good. We also got some of the coffees as well. I would go back for the gluten free Chinese alone.

    If you're looking for authentic, warm your soul food Chinese food Dumpling Hot Pot Beyond is your spot. We came for the dry hot pot but ended up leaving with so many other favorites. Recommend getting the spicy wontons to start then pairing noodles with peanut sauce with the dry hot pot to give you a refreshing pallet cleanse between the tingling sensation of the hot pot. Took my sister who has a gluten allergy and she LOVED the stir fried pepper chicken. Service is easy as you sit and order off a tablet and have rotating servers bringing food out. They have a bigger interior than some other spots on H street in case you have a larger party. The pictures of some dishes looks bigger than that is delivered (noodles with peanut sauce) so don't be afraid to order a few other items to fill up!

    Cute Chinese interior that feels like I was transposed back to China. The dim sum is pretty average and if I would really have to pick one spot in DC, I'd still choose Han palace over this place. Portions are rather small but happy to patronize again to try out its dry hot pot.

    We were excited to see a new hot pot place on H Street! However, this place does not have many hot pot options and is more of your typical Chinese restaurant. The dumpling options are fairly limited too. They have a good ordering system and helpful service. However most of the items we ordered were very small for the price. The place also feels a bit old for a new place. Looks like they might have a private space / banquet room.

    Sooooo we stopped by here to grab a snack before we went to the restaurant we had a reservation for. We had no clue what to expect but everything we ordered was pretty good. We ordered the Vegetarian steamed dumplings (my friend said that the vegetarian dumplings needed mushrooms), Baked BBQ Bao and Pork Soup Dumplings. Everything was good. We were tempted to stay here because everything was so good as you can see we finished eating before I remembered to take pictures of what we ordered. I found out that it's a new place that opened a month ago but the service was ok and the ambiance was chill. Note it's self service. So basically it's a tablet and they just bring you your food. No real waiter but we didn't mind.

    Food: Scallion pancakes -Authentic and flaky! Spring rolls- Great! Shrimp and Broccoli- Great! Better than the rest! Bok Choy: Executed perfectly This new establishment didn't disappoint at all. The owner Ryan was our server and made sure the experience was top notch! Service was great and they made sure all of our dishes were served prompt and hot! They kept our water glasses full and overall I was completely satisfied. I have no complaints and would highly recommend you try for yourself!

We got there nice and early on a Friday to enjoy the happy hour which is available from 4-6 on weekdays. As a part of happy hour they had several cocktails and small bites for $10 or less. I had the pumpkin spice spritz and an order of the fried chicken bites - both were really really good. I'd order both items again. For awareness, they limit dining in to about an hour and a half - because the restaurant is fairly small, they want folks to make their seats available for other guests pretty quickly. They weren't rude about enforcing this time limit, but they definitely tell you up front and quickly gather your orders/plates to help move you though the meal quickly. This is a nice date spot - it's coziness would make for the perfect ambiance in you're looking to grab a bite with that special someone. Pro tip: Be careful not to walk past it! The signage outside isn't the best, so it's very easy to miss the door completely (as I did).

Maketto is a Cambodian, Taiwanese blend restaurant that is surprisingly open from 9 am- 10 pm most days. I love the vibes, the exposed brick, the food, drinks, and the bartender was super friendly. So my friend was telling me that the restaurant used to be half retail store and half restaurant. I'm sure I would've wanted to come in here just to browse all the time because they're definitely trendy and in tune with the culture. Now to my experience. I tried their fried chicken wings and the lo mein. Both are medium plates and large portions. Between my friend and I we were stuffed at the end of dinner and still took some food to-go. All of their dishes come family style and they are not skimping you with the portions. The food was all fresh and soooo flavorful! Kudos to chef Erik, who also owns/created Providencia up the street. I'm so excited to come back to try more because everything sounds delicious. One little word of advice is to check if the restaurant has a private event booked before heading over. Without a dedicated restaurant, I'm glad they are delivering a traditional menu inspired by noodle street stalls and flavors you would find in Chengdu. The noodles in the soup may not be from their hand-pulled series, but they were still perfectly cooked and bouncy while being in the hot broth. It was also a good length, so chili oil and broth shouldn't splatter a lot. It is pretty important to consider this when you may have portable eats and there isn't a guaranteed sit-down area in Union Market. The broth was aromatic with spices (of course pepper corn, but a really distinct sweet anise) mixed together with stewed with unctuous cuts of beef. I am happy to see with the combination of lean cuts and tendon. When those things break down, it thickens the broth with collagen which makes it very hardy. Admittedly, this is one of the more expensive side of offerings within Union Market, but in this case, I see why. They are just offering a more complete meal that likely takes hours of prep. If you're looking for something that doesn't feel like a quick hand held snack, this is a place where you can come to Union Market and walk out full. There was a generous portion of bokchoy, and I especially liked the sprinkles of cubed pickled vegetables. It was a nice bite in between the richness of the broth. Also noting that although Sichuan food has existed for quite some time in the U.S., folks are still unfamiliar with the cuisine. Their menu does an exemplary job at explaining the ingredients and flavors you would expect, so its very accessible for new eaters. Its a good entry point to expanding your palette. I read that their restaurant began in 2019, and its very honorable to see that they stuck to their roots and survived through the pandemic. We got some beef and pork mandu (dumplings) that were pretty good. 6 pieces for $10 on HH. We got two entrees, the Ddukbokgi ($28) and Yukgaejang ($29), which came with four banchan. Ddukbokgi is chewy rice cakes, gochujang, onion, and bulgogi. We thought it was only ok -- we've had better, including at Mandu in the past. Yukgaejang was a new dish for me. The menu described it as a "spicy beef stew, brisket, noodles, shiitake, bean sprouts, and egg." I expected the brisket to be sliced and recognizably brisket, but it was pulled -- it looked and tasted more like pulled pork. The dish also didn't have any noodles in it. I didn't like it. The banchan was seaweed, bean sprouts, kimchi, and cucumbers. It was okay. Service at the bar was fine.

Outside of the owner being nice and answering my partner's many questions, I can't find anything else positive to say. We ordered Dan Dan noodles and the 13 spice scallion oil stir fried noodles, and both were disappointing. They were SO salty from the get go and the saltiness just kept building in our mouths as we ate. The noodles were also over cooked and didn't have that chewy QQ texture. I couldn't taste any sesame flavor in the Dan Dan noodles, as it was pretty much just sitting in a bath of oil, and the minced pork was just salty too. Meanwhile, I couldn't taste a single spice in the 13 spice noodles, though I could see the peppers in the dish. Everything just tasted - you guessed it - salty. I also feel like the ratio of meat to noodles was way off LOL it's weird to complain that there was too much meat, but this dish really needed more carbs to balance out the flavor. And these prices are just outrageous. I know it's DC and it's Union Market, but if you're marketing your food as "street food" then it shouldn't cost $15-20 per dish. The shrimp wonton egg noodle soup was so jarring to me at $18.50 - even in San Francisco of all cities, this dish costs no more than $11 at Hong Kong cafes (don't get me started on how it was under $5 when I was a kid). Or at least if it's gonna be expensive, it should taste good too. I'm genuinely sad to leave such a negative review for an up and coming Chinese business. As a native Californian and someone who visited family in Taiwan every summer growing up, I love and have very high expectations for Chinese food, but this just wasn't it for me. I hope that it was an off day, but even so I probably won't be coming back.

What we got: Pork bao bun - 2.5-3* the size was really fun, the overall taste, not so much. The bun on it's own was pretty standard. The meat inside the bun was very disappointing. It was pretty dry and did not have much flavor. The best part of the dish was their dipping sauce, it is amazing! While it can't quite save the sad state of the bao, it did enhance it slightly. I would love to try dipping other items into their dipping sauce to see what else it compliments.
