My hubs and I have driven by Mainstay Provisions thousands of times since they opened years ago and we FINALLY tried it last Saturday. OMG, what had we been waiting for?!? This place is great! We arrived around 1:30pm on a Saturday which was the perfect time because we stepped right up to the counter, ordered, and found a table without waiting. I started off with the Zucchini Bread with Cardamom (no dairy, yay!). It was moist, just the right amount of sweetness, and delicious. Wish it had a stronger pop of cardamom, but I'd still definitely order it again. My hubs had the Ginger Scone which brought back sweet memories for him of going to the now-no-longer Cafe Besalu on 24th Ave NW and getting their famous ginger biscuit. He said this scone was just as good. Then we shared a whole rotisserie chicken (2 drumsticks with attached thighs, 2 chicken breasts with attached wings) that came with a salsa verde, lemon crema, and a spice mix. The fresh salsa verde was a beautiful condiment for the crispy and juicy chicken. We ate our fill and took one breast and wing home. Would order this dish again. Our cashier was friendly. The atmosphere while we ate was peaceful because of our timing. I can imagine it might be noisier at busy times. The cafe/restaurant has a gourmet foods, grab & go foods, and wine shop combined with it, which we browsed through after we ate. Might come here for some pulled rotisserie chicken to go if we just need some easy protein on a busy day. Super convenient option. Now that we've eaten here, I can see why so many people like Mainstay Provisions, and I really hope it's a mainstay in Ballard for many years to come. read more

This place is so sweet, part curated grocery store and part cafe. There is high chair seating available and one regular table. Lots of locals coming in and out. It's a very lively place. Mainstay Provisions is one of my friend's go-to spots, so I had to check it out with her. We arrived on a rainy Saturday around 1pm, there were several open tables and only a few people in line. The interior is really cute and arranged with a small fancy grocery area as well. We had fun perusing the goods while we waited for our food. We all ordered one of the breakfast sandwich options, I had the McMainstay and the other two ordered the Bacon with avocado. The McMainstay was very similar to the build of a McMuffin, with sausage, egg, and American Cheese. The bacon breakfast sandwich had some nice color with the arugula and the added avocado. My wife and I found Mainstay while walking down the street close to our Airbnb. We saw people eating pizza so we decided to stop in. It turns out they also do coffee and ice cream. It was close to closing time so we had to get our pizza to go. While we waited for our pizza, I had their root beer float with ice cream swirled. I enjoyed my root beer float but my root beer wasn't cold. It was cold when it hit the ice cream but before that, it was not. For our pizza, we had half of Chick of the Sea and half cheese. The Chick of the Sea was Mainstay's take on BBQ chicken pizza. It came with a BBQ sauce base. It had chicken, red onion, jalapeños, and some kind of tangy sauce on top. I really enjoyed this pizza. I'm not being dramatic when I say I could spend all day here. This spot is a coffee shop/ cafe/ grocery store that has everything I could ask for on a slow day off from work such as sandwiches, pizza, wine, tons of cooking ingredients, and of course coffee. They use Caffe Ladro for espresso but also sell some bags of my favorite local roasters like Boon Boona and Stamp Act. Today I got an espresso macchiato which had a solid amount of acidity and some pleasant tropical fruit notes, along with a corned beef sandwich which had a beautiful amount of sauerkraut. The design was very modern and featured a large garage door which really opened up the space. Could've used more comfortable seating but the stools were better than nothing. Initially thinking it was another run of the mill small coffee shop with its selection of baked goods but it actually has more going on within. Toward the weekend they have pizza for take out. There are many spices and Hors d'oeuvre/appetizer type things for hosting a party like sardines, crackers, chips, dips olives and a bunch more. Following that they have lots of wines to choose from. So along with coffee it seems like a store preparing to host or bring for a fancy party. I got a breakfast sandwich and latte. A running favorite pairing of mine. One of the best breakfast sandwiches I ever had! Came here for brunch because we wanted a Bloody Mary and mimosa! Love the ambiance and the open concept in the restaurant. The doors / front is open so the fresh air was a nice compliment to our experience. I love how you bus your own food, get your own silverware and condiments, and get your own water. It's better to just do it yourself so you don't have to wait on staff to refill or get you what you need. Service was awesome and food came out in decent time consider busy they were. We ordered a Bloody Mary, mimosa, a bacon English muffin sandwich, and a Mcmainstays muffin! Our sandwiches were amazing!!! The bacon sandwich came with an aioli, lots of thick cut bacon, a fresh egg, cheese, and arugula! Fantastic combination and oh so delicious. The Mcmainstays sandwich was phenomenal! We came here for brunch yesterday after I got my hair cut nearby. We sat outside since we had the dog with us. The tables outside were small and kind of awkward to sit at, since the line had to wind around them. I ordered our food inside and it took about 10-15 minutes for it to come. I got the sausage muffin sandwich, my husband got the scramble, and we shared a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was fairly tasty but nothing special. I didn't love the sausage muffin sandwich. It had so much aioli on it that it was gross and I had to scape a bunch off. The egg was also beyond runny (it was supposed to be over medium and seemed to be more over easy) so after one bite, the yoke had burst and was running out everywhere, which made it hard to eat. It was just too messy and not that tasty. My husband liked his scramble but it's pretty hard to mess that up. For the price, it was pretty small. You pay for each ingredient in it so it quickly got pricey. One annoying thing about this place is there is basically zero service. You have to order at the counter, get your own water, get your own silverware and napkins, and then bus your own table at the end. Plus they didn't have certain condiments (like ketchup) available at the counter so you had to find someone to ask for stuff like that. read more

So flavorful and satisfying! - mac & cheese - fine but wasn't my favorite. We enjoyed our prior visit so I went again to grab a quick takeout lunch and this time got: - bacon breakfast sandwich - husband really enjoyed this! Very generous portion of bacon and the english muffin is house made! - Special sandwich of the week - loved this! Lots of flavor and the chicken was juicy. The ingredients seem high quality and they take care when making everything, so this is not your typical deli sandwich -- items are priced accordingly. I don't know how I didn't know about Mainstay. This place rocks! Yeah my sandwich took a while, but it was a busy Sunday and they told me it would. I wasn't in a hurry, and I killed a few minutes walking around looking at their wine and beer and snacks for sale. Mainstay is a decent casual breakfast/brunch spot in the neighborhood! I love the shop itself, which has a lot of specialty ingredients, good coffee, and wine. You can usually find some things here that they won't have at your typical grocery store, which is really nice. The breakfast food is okay! Nothing stellar but always good enough for me especially if I'm looking for breakfast food but don't want a full sit down meal. I usually like to get a hash, and my partner gets the McMainstay muffin. The hash is pretty good though I find the potatoes to be a little bit hard/undercooked for my liking.
