Turmeric Ginger Chai. That's all you need to know...and order. I'm normally a simple Americano person; no frills. But this drink is fantastic. I will say it's a touch pricy (especially when you order with Almond Milk), but wow is it delicious. Just the right amount of spice, and hardly any sweetness which I love. The staff here are always super friendly even when it's a packed house. Their biscotti were great as well. I do notice they have beer/wine? But have never seen anyone at the bar area. Umbria coffee. +1. Accessibility. There is plenty of paid parking around, which increases the odds of finding a spot, even if you have to walk a block. +1. Knowledge. The barista we spoke with provided a ton of background on the 'drip of the day' coffees. +1. Atmosphere. There is plenty of seating and the music is pretty mild. However, there is no noise dampening in the ceiling. +1. Service. They have plenty of in-house options for those looking to consume their coffee. -1. Options. They did explain they don't provide other brew options like french-press, pour over, or aero press. Background. Full disclosure, I've been to this location a couple of times. But this is my first analysis. Before entering, a covered entryway greets you with the queue starting 1/10th into the entrance, the barista greeted me. Looking at two carafes, I asked about brew options and was provided a medium and medium-dark roast. When I asked if there was any other brew options. I was told they stopped providing other options before 2019. Asking about the two coffees, the barista insisted on not disclosing the bean origins for the medium-bold, but was willing to allow me to sample the coffees. I ended up with the medium-bold. Speaking further with the barista, they described other blends and how long the current blend will be available. Sitting down, I found the seats hard and the back uncomfortable and no doubt unbearable over a prolonged period. Overall, except for brew options given this is a roastery cafe, this spot can be welcoming. As always, your experience will vary. read more

I visited this place last Saturday while I was attending the Ballard seafood fest. I ordered a Matcha green tea latte and asked what type of non-dairy milk they had. The man that was helping me was not friendly at all. He repeated the three names of the milk so quickly I could barely understand him. I chose oat milk with light ice. The latte came and it had light ice, but the cup itself was only 3/4 full. And it cost $7.73 !! The place itself had a nice atmosphere, but the worker was not friendly, so this is not a place I would visit again!! read more

I've been a long time customer at Caffe Umbria, long before this location opened. I think it's a great company with high standards for customer service and a good consistent product. But I had an awful experience with Ernesto who took my order recently; he was rude, oblivious to my questions, and even started talking to people behind me in line while ignoring me. J. and a friend of ours raved about this spot after they stopped in on a bike ride, so J. and I returned a couple weeks later. I don't know if it was an off day, but I was sadly unimpressed. Midweek late morning and it was popping. Maybe the guy behind the counter had an exhausting morning, but his attitude was honestly uncomfortable for us. We ordered our americanos and moved down the line. Mine tasted awful. Like supremely bitter and overextracted. I asked J. to taste it because he'd gulped his down, and he remarked that it wasn't the same as his. I asked the barista to remake it which he gladly did, but the second round wasn't much better. Espresso beverages are accompanied by a square of chocolate, and my untouched piece was on my plate when I returned it to the barista to remake. He only passed me back a new cup without saucer, so I also didn't get any chocolate in the end. The first time I visited, I got the espresso doppio and the cafe Al Pepe. Both were good -- the espresso was chocolatey (but not too concentrated). I haven't had any cafe al pepes before so was pleasantly surprised by the pepper flavor profile. However, the second time I went, I got the cappuccino al cacao. It was SCORCHING hot!! Definitely had minor tongue burns after the first sip. I was super disappointed.. overheated milk is one of the marks of bad coffee. read more

I was (pleasantly) surprised when the barista brought my drink over to my table instead of just shouting my order; I always get nervous about spilling! The included chocolate was a nice touch too. I also appreciated that they had the option of sparkling water. Overall, a pretty good place to do work. I'd bring a jacket though; the AC is turned on pretty high. Delicious! I bet competition is steep in Seattle, but Cafe Umbria really brings it. I was in Seattle for a month and this was probably the best coffee I had. The service is fast and efficient, likely because they are deeply busy (we went on a Sunday during the farmers market, so that didn't help). Even so, we had our drinks within minutes. We got an espresso and an americano, and both were made perfectly. You could tell that the coffee is very high quality. It was pretty loud in there, so I don't think (at least on Sundays) that this is the best option to sit and hangout/study, but the coffee definitely rules!! read more

In Seattle you will find many coffee shops. Some will charge you an arm and a leg and have crappy customer service. This place is the opposite. The coffee is top notch. They understand the quality of coffee and will make sure you experience how Italians enjoy coffee. I love that they gift you a piece of chocolate with your coffee order; quality chocolate. I like this spot a lot. The location is right in middle of Pioneer Square. You can sit inside or outside, especially when it's nice out and take in the sounds of the city. Note that Caffe Umbria IS OPEN during Covid for DINING-IN and TAKEOUT. They also have limited outdoor seating. My family and I came here after stopping by the Ballard Farmers Market. This was my first time here, but I've walked by it on my way to get tea at Miro. Caffe Umbria is a small coffee shop, uniquely adorned with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. There are small tables inside, and also a couple of small tables outside, making it the perfect place for a coffee date. Caffe Umbria has seasonal specials, including Coffee Spritz (soda water with coffee) and Granita (similar time a frappe). I wanted something simple though, and so I ordered a 16-oz iced latte with light ice to share with my mom. The barista was friendly and had our order ready in less than 10 minutes. The coffee was smooth and you could really taste the creaminess if the whole milk and the strength of the espresso. It was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up on a hot summer day. However, it was a splurge, as it cost over $6 (but I can't Starbucks prices are any cheaper these days). All baristas were wearing masks and social distance measures were in place. It was pleasantly busy, and there were several cute pups with their parents having coffee:) I ordered an oat milk latte with vanilla and it was definitely one of the best I had ever had- probably in my top 5! Staff was so rude to me today they actually made me cry. I set up my work computer, planned to work there about 3 hours until my doctors appointment later that morning. I am a remote employee, so I spend one to two mornings a week working from coffee shops all over Seattle. I often order a couple of drinks and food and was looking forward to doing the same here. I was setting up my computer and getting my hotspot connected (so there about five minutes) when a staff member with short blonde hair marched up to my table and asked if I was planning on ordering anything. I was shocked. Said, yes I plan to once I set up my computer. She lectured me on how people just show up and use all their Wi-Fi and never order anything and this coffee shop was for paying customers only. Stunned, I asked if she was telling me to leave. She said yes, since you WONT order anything you should leave. I packed up in tears, so embarrassed to be shamed in front of everyone like that. I have never had this happen to me ever. I frequent this location at least 2-3x a week because their coffee is phenomenal, it's a great place to do work, lovely decor, and the staff are so welcoming. They've got seasonal lattes (I'm a huge latte snob) and they never disappoint in their creations. Super cute cafe in the neighborhood of Ballard. It's a great place to work, study or just catch up with friends. I came here on a Friday afternoon and it was packed but luckily there was enough room to sit up at the bar. I ordered the gingerbread latte( I think) which was their holiday special at the time. Usually I stay away from holiday drinks as they can be too saturated with syrup or have too much cinnamon in them. But this latte was great! Loved how it wasn't too sweet but you couldn't taste the bitter espresso either. Each cup of coffee that day also came with a small square of dark chocolate which was a cute touch as well. I'm not sure if they do this all the time or if it was a one day special but it definitely adds to why I want to come back! read more

I opted for a simple macchiato, which was well prepared and delicious. Came with a side of sparkling water too. This location had ample seating and friendly staff. Spectacular, perfect Italian style coffee service, with modern variants and nods to current trends -like cold coffee and French-style pastries, presented with professional ease by a talented staff and managed well by the original family that started the whole Seattle coffee thing, back in the day. Some of you may remember Torrefazione. This is the next generation of that wonderful brand, known for its precise quality roasts and traditional Italian flavor profiles and service format. Their "Perugia" roast was the one I first used when I was training to be a barista, about 20 years ago. Here, you will get a proper spoon and saucer with your cup, and they offer a chocolate wafer to nibble, which brings out the rich cacao and nut nuances in the espresso. Both still and sparkling water are on tap, and self-serve, as it should be. Service is quiet, brisk, efficient but polite, like you might expect in any good European espresso house. Pastries here stray more towards the French, as is fashionable these days in Seatown thanks to top-notch bakeries like Bakery Nouveau, but the quality seems good and they are offering sandwiches and salads now too. I would like to see some rustic sandwiches and more typically Italian sweets, like pizzelles, pignoli, amaretti (the best with espresso!). It would be wonderful to see them offer some of the treats from Pellegrini Italian Market in West Seattle... I can't recommend this place enough. mmmm...happy to have stumbled upon Caffe Umbria in Ballard. Parking is paid parking along the street which can sometimes be tough to find, other times spots are plentiful. Probably just a matter of what time of the day it is.. The space is bright and trendy, moderate noise level with folks working, meeting friends, reading, etc. There are a few tables outside to enjoy as well in the warmer months. My latte was velvety smooth, perfectly poured espresso and milk temperature. I believe the pastries are from Macrina (YUM!) and the almond croissant is out of this world.
