Based on my latest visit to Mai Place, I'm happy to increase my rating to four stars! Our party of 28 came here to celebrate Lunar New Year and had a pleasant experience. The staff was both kind and attentive, and we didn't feel rushed at all like we did last time. I consider this to be one of the better Cantonese restaurants on the Eastside although prices are on the higher end for average size portions. Our table of 10 was able to polish off nine dishes with no leftovers which is not super common for us. When we go to other restaurants, there's usually at least something left to take home, but here, all our plates were completely clean. + SAUTÉED FISH FILLET ($19.95): Lightly fried pieces of fish were coated in a subtle soy-based sauce with snap peas, celery and mushrooms. The fish was delicate and addicting; every time it approached me on the turntable, I scooped a piece onto my plate! + ENOKI MUSHROOM w/ SILKY TOFU ($19.95): The tofu had such a smooth custard-like texture with a firm lightly fried exterior. If you're seeking a vegetarian option, I recommend this! + HOUSE SPECIAL CHOW MEIN ($16.95): So good! The noodles had a delicious wok flavor and weren't too oily. It included slices of BBQ pork, small shrimp that had a perfect snap and tender calamari strips. Onion and cabbage added some crunch. + DRY BEEF CHOW FUN ($16.95): They use the dried flat rice noodles rather than the fresh ones, so this was just okay. (I think the last time we came, they used the fresh noodles.) The noodles were not as soft as I'd like, but the flavor aligned with your average chow fun and the pieces of beef were quite tender. + PEA VINES w/ GARLIC SAUCE ($19.95): The pea vines tasted fresh with crunchy stems and tender leaves. This is a good straightforward veggie dish. + SZECHUAN CHICKEN ($16.95): This is labeled as "spicy" on the menu, but the heat level is mild at most. I'd say it was more of a sweet and sour sauce which wasn't bad, but just different than anticipated. The chicken pieces were pretty small and some were mostly crust, so I would probably skip this next time. We had three other dishes as well, but these are the ones I wanted to spotlight. After we ordered, our food started arriving shortly after and the staff walked around on a regular basis to refill waters. Mai Place is pretty easy to miss when driving around the area, so definitely make a point to seek it out the next time you're craving authentic Chinese cuisine. read more

I ordered to go a crispy Beef chow mein... the staff all are nice but the food quality is kinda Disappointed they used the cheap Napa cabbage ( instead of the traditional Baby bok choy ) the beef was the worse part.. it did Not taste or look like Beef at all ,it looked pink and small just like Pork.. I called them and reconfirmed that I ordered A Beef chow mein Not Pork.. they reconfirmed that it was beef not pork but " maybe a Different kind of beef (???) I apologize for being too quick to post my previous review without giving them time to improve. The food doesn't taste exactly the same as the previous owners, but it is still very good. My go to take out! I've been to Mai Place Asian Bistro now four(4) times...that should tell you something :) I always purchase the Veggie Lo Mien with Fried Tofu. The cost is $3.00 fir tofu add on but, well worth it. Because I like a little more spice I add at home to my liking. The portion is plenty. It last me for three meals. Went with a group of 7 midday on a Saturday. The place was pretty full. Service could have been better. We had to figure out ourselves where to find a menu. Then it took a while for us to order. We had to flag them down to get more tea and for our bill to pay. I do think if you don't speak Cantonese, it would be a bit more difficult to order or even get someone to take your order. The bill was written in Chinese too. The food overall was tasty. A bit too oily for me but that's more of a personal preference. I wasn't expecting a good Hong Kong/Cantonese style Chinese restaurant outside of International District. Mai Place has some authentic Cantonese stables. They have chef special written on the white board not listed in the menu. Worth checking it out. They know how to prepare the seafood. They are tender and flavorful. The cold chicken and the roast duck are my favorite. If you like chow mein like I do, definitely try the Cantonese rice noodle, it's with the see-thru noodle. Very unusual but very yummy. read more

After the day hike in Ranier, I came down for some traditional Cantonese comfort food. It was 245PM right before the restaurant afternoon break, I was welcomed in with full service. The fried intestine with radish was excellent, crisp on the outside and tender inside. The eggplant with salty fish and chicken was good, not overly oily. The restaurant is very clean and plays piano music, good for a rest after a day in the mountain. I'd try the more traditional dishes, they are outstanding than the usuals. read more

I read the reviews on Yelp before I reserved a table for 10 for my family. I liked the food and was impressed with the service. The servers come around and give you hot water, ice water, tea, napkins, bowls, or whatever you ask. The round table has a large lazy susan so that was great to share all the dishes we ordered. House Pan Fried noodles (crispy Hong Kong style noodles with gravy over it) was excellent. Scallop Egg White Fried Rice also good--my family loved it. The 5 Spice Crispy Chicken (half) was very good, as was the Roast Duck (half), just the right amount of chicken and duck. Mapo tofu was spicy, could be larger portion, Beef Brisket with Daikon, was not very fresh nor tender, Roast Pork Fish with Tofu hot pot the pork was not BBQ roast pork. Mai Place is a very good and famous local Chinese restaurant in Renton, Washington. It is referring to me by the local friends. The restaurant is well known by the locals. Many return customers in there knowing each other and the waiter seems knowing most of the customers too. Also, the waiter is very friendly and attentive. He just keeps check back to our table making sure we're satisfied and refills our teapots and waters! The foods are tasted good and very fresh. What I don't really like is many different dishes tasted almost the same! However, they are all very delicious! Easy to miss the restaurant on the road if you're driving. The parking lot in front of the restaurant is not very big. More parking spaces are available located in the bigger parking lot behind the building. The takeaway I ordered was a disappointment. Service was fine. Ambiance not inviting.

Ordered some food for dinner Friday night. The food was fast, hot, and cooked thoroughly but it just wasn't..... good. The mapo tofu looked good online but was more like a oil gravy/soup of sweet mapo tofu. I was expecting heat but ended up draining the oil gravy it sat in and adding chili oil. The duck was tender but seemed like it was deep fried and was fuuuuullllll of bone fragments. The honey glazed short ribs were more like sweet and sour breaded short ribs. And again, bone shards. The steamed bread to go with the duck was so fluffy but sadly for me I think it had milk so I couldn't enjoy it. When I popped one in the microwave for too long the smell that followed was of burnt milk and the consistency of the now hard bread followed. Bf loved it but I was out. The biggest issue was how sick bf was after eating it. I dont think it was food poisoning as I didn't eat as much or really the same food he did but wow was his stomach upset the next day. read more

Just picked up take out and it was amazing! The beef broccoli was my favorite, so savory. Highly recommend. Beef Chow mein was just as delicious but the chicken fried rice was basic. Love coming here for nostalgic Chinese cooking. They have a new owner and chef I believe so some of the dishes aren't the same as before (like my favorite bitternelon eggplant vermicelli dish) but the others are still on point. Alright guys, yeah its a little oily and by no means fancy, but you're getting some really good cantonese chinese food, what are you expecting? This place is such a gem, and I can't believe it took me going stir crazy finding things to cook while in quarantine to discover this place! It's soooo conveniently located and it has all the amazing dishes I would order back in college in the ID at 3 AM. This place is comparable to any of those late night Chinese restaurants we all love visiting in the international district. I am so excited that I know they're close by, and if i have that Honey Walnut Shrimp, salted fish fried rice, or Cantonese poached chicken with ginger sauce cravings, this place will be there. I am incredibly comforted knowing they're so close to me. We ordered the mandarin chicken, beef short ribs, poached chicken, calamari, and boy, we probably could eat it a for a few more meals! Thank you for not skimping us on our portions! Everything was reasonably priced and did I already mention delicious? It's everything we could of hoped for. The poached chicken is my childhood classic/favorite/comfort food and they do it sooooooo well! I'm so excited to be able to try other items on their menu and I'm so excited to know my husband can fetch dinner in a matter of 15 minutes putting in the order. So glad Mai Place still serving meal kits during special times, accepting called orders only and grab at the restaurant without waiting. If I only want Chinese fast food, I'd stop by Panda Exp. , but If I want to eat more authentically like Canton Shiu Mai or dim sum then I choose Mai Place. In my mind, the Peking Roasted Duck will be the best in chef's menu, definitely worth trying this traditional cuisine. Mai Place has been my go-to family Chinese restaurant as long as I can remember. The staff and ownership has changed within the past couple of years, and I think it has honesty made it better. My favorite dish is the Mandarin Fried Chicken, silky tofu, salt and pepper chicken wings, and chicken chow mein (Hong Kong style). Great hidden spot in Renton with really good prices for your standard Chinese fare. All the classics can be found here, and like I said, the prices are really great. I'd pick this place over something to the likes of Panda Express any day. You'd get much more bang for the buck, and they're quick too, if you call and order ahead of time. They have large tables so a family gathering for a birthday or other special occasion works here. They will take reservations (though after you hang up, you might not be sure if the person on the other end really understood what you asked for). Some of my favorite dishes are Mongolian Beef, Salt and Pepper Pork Chops, Beef Chow Fun (dry style), stir fried pea vines, and garlic green beans with ground pork. I like the convenience of the location, and there is always plenty of parking spaces, though some spaces are right next to the dumpster for that real authentic experience and smells! read more

Maybe my rating will change if I visit again on a regular day but for now it is what it is. I haven't been here since 2010, I think they have changed owners since then. Came for Christmas dinner with my family. We got the $188 dinner for 13 people. It wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special either. It was quite a hectic night so I understand the slower service. However, they brought out the wrong soup and also mixed up one of our vegetable dishes. On top of that, there was plastic in one of our dishes that my sister and boyfriend found. The sign outside indicates this is a Fusion Asian Bistro. Sounded good, so I gave it a shot. I was greeted immediately and told to sit anywhere I liked. The gentleman waiting on me then brought out tea and a menu. I ordered crab rangoon and Mongolian Beef (menu seemed pretty much straightforward Chinese-American dishes). As I waited for my order, I looked around. I was amazed by the sheer-materialed tapestry draped in waves below the dark maroon ceiling. Depending on how light was shining on a given strand in the tapestry, the strand could appear leaf green, copper, red, yellow, blue or any of a number of other colors. Music started out as hard rock, then country, and finally Oriental and stayed Oriental. Periodically the soundtrack of a songbird chirping was played. How cool is that?!! My waiter brought out a corn-laden egg flower soup. It was really lacking in flavor, so I added some of chili sauce that was on the table. The sauce had a weird gummy appearance at the bottom of the jar. But the hot sauce did help some. Next, my waiter brought out my crab rangoon, which were shaped like four-point stars. Sorry to say, they were not good. Their shells were extremely thick and hard. The dipping sauce was exactly like fry sauce (i.e. ketchup, mustard and mayo), with some chili powder sprinkled in. My Mongolian Beef was presented beautifully. It contained abundant meat, white onion, green onion and red and green bell pepper. And the beef was incredibly tender. However, the Mongolian Beef suffered the same problem as the egg flower soup: total lack of flavor. They also went overboard with the green onion. I really wanted a cup of egg drop soup right when I woke up today so I went to this place because they were right down the street and open at 11am! I ordered a cup of the egg flower soup and my boyfriend ordered the hot and sour and then we noticed how good the prices were!!! It's 5.95 for all the lunch specials. Chinese food isn't my favorite but seriously how could we pass on that!?!? We decided on the mandarin crispy chicken because the menu said it was a spicy dish. It came with rice and an egg roll that was pretty greasy actually but the dish was good. I wasn't disappointed with it and I'm a tough critic when it comes to Chinese food because it's all just gross deep fried meat with a sticky gooey sauce BUT this actually had good flavor and tasted great with the spicy chile paste. Due to their funny logo, I drove past this place trying to find it. Being that it was smoking hot outside, this is already had me in a grumpy mood. Walking inside to try dinner, the place is completely empty. Not a good sign in my book. Like Hing Loon, it has pieces of paper with menu items posted on the wall, but where it makes the Loon homey...it doesn't work in this place. Perhaps it was the dishes we ordered, but I really didn't care for the food here. (BItter melon/noodles in eggs, ground pork with shrimp paste, szechuan chicken, pea vines.) It was too old school for me and to my tastes, either the dishes were all either way too salty or bland. Service was even a little spotty.
