Located in the new section of Fifth Street Marketplace, (right in front of The Gordon Hotel) Magpie is a new coffeehouse that has a clean, modern vibe with hard surfaces, cement floors and lots of light. This is not a quaint cozy coffeehouse with wood counters and tables, like the name might conjure up, but it is surprisingly welcoming because of the friendly servers, vibrant sounds of coffee brewing and milk steamers going. I had one of the chicken tarragon hand pies, which was very tasty and flaky. I was still hungry, 'tho. My friend had the egg sandwich, which came out as a yellow egg square surrounded mostly by bread. She said it was, "ok." Frankly, by appearance it looked a little strange and bare on the white plate it was served on. A few slices of fruit or garnish would have made it look more appetizing. My other friend ordered the wisest choice, (breakfast bowl), which looked the heartiest and most delicious of the three. Hers also came with a biscuit. She loved it. We met for breakfast and were all pretty hungry. I was disappointed that there weren't more choices: i.e. egg dishes with protein, potatoes, etc... The coffees were delicious. My favorite thing was the chocolate peanut butter mini pie that we all had a tiny piece of. It was super yummy, and I'd go back just for that...or to try another one of their pies. For breakfast...not likely, unless they expand their menu. For coffee and a baked treat, I'd give this place 5 stars. read more

7-2-22 This restaurant is 100% into "food must taste really really really bad to be healthy." I remember my mom telling me to eat those ultra bitter vegetables Chinese love like the Chinese mustard leaves (I dunno if you've had it, but it's basically 10x more bitter than brewer's yeast) cuz the worse it tastes the better it is for you. Well this place takes that to a whole other level--like the less we cook something the less cooking destroys the nutrients (I guess is what they're going for?). Guess that's why everything is extra doughy, extra soaked in the natural store air (read: stale). Extra burnt........ oh wait.... that doesn't fit with the cook less, less carcinogen thing..... Or maybe they just should fire their chefs. 1. Classic Avocado Toast with Seeded Multigrain Bread $7.50 (one slice): The only thing "classic" here is if it is reminiscent of your alcoholic parents waking up from a crazy binge and suddenly realizing they need some toast to offset the hangover... and half drunkingly, half painfully, half inserted their toast into the toaster, cranked to high, knob broken off in the process. Oh.... and they accidentally dropped the bread into the sink on the way, and it sat there for about 30 seconds soaking in detergent water and refuse. Yeah, so, a half burned toast that tasted like a half cooked dough ball. Smeared with avocado on top (which was fine.). For a little less than 8 bucks. 1/10 2. Orange Poppy Muffin $4: For muffins I always suggest the Costco rule: like, if your muffins don't taste better than Costco's 12 pack that we all love, don't fight it, join them! Just sell Costco's like most mom and pop coffee shops, right??? But certainly, don't serve STALE as F muffins, all doughy and yucky like yours. Hell I couldn't even separate it from your paper. It was that old. It was so bad my kid wouldn't eat it, I wouldn't eat it, my gf wouldn't eat it.... So the trash bin ate it. 1/10 3. Chicken Hand Pie $7.50: To be honest it's getting hard to type this on my phone. Thumbs getting tired. I'll just make this one short: it's 50% vegetables (frozen?), 49% mystery gooo, and 2 pieces of 1" cube chicken. The crust was okay tasting but ugly--a blackened middle top looked as if it had an accident about 7 days ago and has since dried up. Some edges were burned too. 1/10 4. Blue Magpie Latte $5: Gotta give them credit where credits is due. No, it's not to my taste, but I do think it's a great idea for a latte-alternative and relatively well executed. So this is some kind of no-coffee latte, naturally blue color. I think I'd say it's closer to a Chai tea but without the spiciness. But mixed with milk it does sorta feel like a latte. Unfortunately, or fortunately, there's too much milk. Normally this would be a deduction for a real espresso latte but I think if there was less here the herbs would be too strong. Their coffee sucks and it's expensive. Has a weird flavor to it. They probably use some fancy special roast that is supposed to be exotic but it's gross. I like coffee, I like experimenting with coffee, I like fancy roast coffees and trying new kinds. I'll drink Starbucks and other places like that, but not my 1st choice. I like coffee with just a bit of cream. I like the tast of coffee so it doesn't need to be covered up with all the added flavors and sugars. But I don't like this coffee. The staff is amazing. The lication is prime. Their Chai is good. Their sweet treats are super tasty. Just don't get a coffee to go with it. read more

On a recent visit here I ordered an 8oz. cappuccino and a chicken terragon hand pie. The cappuccino gets a C-. The drink itself was was too hot. Second, a cappuccino should be 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk and 1/3 creamy sweet foam. Here we had very little foam and a coffee that tasted watered down. I can't imagine they used whole milk but either way too much water to milk espresso. The hand pie gets a B, Temperature is right, chicken is moist and there are ample vegetables inside that are still slightly crisp and vibrant. The pie itself, though, was lacking seasoning and even a little more salt and pepper would elevate this quite a bit. The same with the pastry crust. While it was nice and flaky it was flat on flavor. Tasted like it was made with vegetable shortening or something but would be much better if made with butter or lard. The atmosphere is this place also gets a B. It not as relaxing as I would like. There is constant mechanical hum going on which may be from the drinks cooler in the middle of the floor. Also the décor is very industrial which appeals to some but I am not a big fan. Overall I give visit #1 a C. As a coffeeshop, the coffee quality is pretty important and that was were they stumbled the most. I will give them a second try and see if the first coffee was just an anomaly. read more

Cute place in the heart of the 5th Street shopping district. I came on March 14 a few minutes before closing and was pleased they still had some individual pies left. Picked up a banana cream but the German chocolate was hard to resist. Other flavor of the day was lemon meringue, but I got the impression they change the menu frequently. I enjoyed my chai latte on the spot. I appreciate that they're not too sweet here, but I could have done with a little more spice. Similarly, the pie was quite good but fell slightly short with crust that was too thick and difficult to eat. The filling was excellent, though, and I also enjoyed the homemade vanilla bean whipped cream on top. I would come back here on another day if I was shopping in the area. Magpie is located in the newly renovated 5th Street Market. Convenient walking distance from the Saturday market, Inn at the 5th, and Gordon's Hotel. This coffee shop serves coffee varieties as well as small hand pies, cinnamon rolls, avocado toast varieties, and my favorite - the egg biscuit! The egg biscuit is stacked with an egg & leek fritatta, bacon & cheese on a house biscuit. Flaky, warm and filling. Just the rite bit of savory and salt, the square frittata offers consistent delicious bites! The coffee is average considering the substantial varieties in the area. Wanted to love this coffee shop and it's pretty impossible to love- Ordered two drinks and two egg biscuits. Egg biscuits didn't taste entirely right, at all. Asked if I should pick the drinks up at the counter or if they would be brought out with food and was told they would be brought out to the table I was at- instead they sat on the counter for twenty minutes. :( Matcha latte was undrinkable- I'm not sure what it was really but tasted foul. Pumpkin spice latte smelled nice and was like old coffee. So gross and all of it was priced high. I can't recommend this place and I will happily spend my money elsewhere in town like Meraki or Vero. read more

If you want good service and good coffee, absolutely avoid this place. The baristas were pleasant as usual today but it always seems that they are short handed. I waited more than 15 minutes for a breakfast sandwich. I will not be coming here until they can get their performance up. read more

I don't drink coffee. I just want an edible breakfast. This place isn't it. I'm pretty sure their biscuits are made of two ingredients: particle board and ground sandstone. It's a shame... if they just put a little pride in their biscuits (the foundation of their savory breakfast items), I'd be happy to live near them. Rich and slighty tangy cream frosting on a big cinnamon roll enough to share? This made my afternoon! I took it home to share with my husband after warming it in the oven. I'm not sure if the frosting was sour cream, but I liked how there was a slight tang and not powerfully sweet. read more

This place slapped! Got a breakfast bowl and some iced matcha. Both were fire. Kinda wish the bowl came with two eggs instead of one, but hey - a girl can't have everything. One of the employees - Justin - was oh so kind and took my order over the phone. Honestly such a laid back dude, I wish him well. The ambiance of the storefront was clean as can be, very chill atmosphere and smiley workers. Only downside is that this place is hellllaaaaa pricey. Cute coffeeshop in a charming downtown area with an admirable selection of good quality food options and beverages. The coffee itself was ok but everything else they offer more than makes up for it. I had the Magpie salad which was a huge portion and more like a dinner platter than a salad with roasted vegetables, farro and added chicken. I really looked forward to my experience at Magpie Coffeeshop. 9:30 on a Sunday morning, not very crowded, but obviously understaffed or under trained. Coffee was unremarkable, both breakfast choices left a lot to be desired. My friend had barely toasted avocado toast with a cold under poached egg. My breakfast bowl had two under poached eggs (white not set) and an unpalatable sweetness (balsamic vinegar?) to the greens and vegetables. Very noisy environment, no one wiping down tables, civil but not friendly, harried staff. Hope it improves. read more
