Went to Madhatter for a birthday this weekend for the first time. Alice in Wonderland decor was everywhere throughout the bar. Lots of younger people there. Good music and a huge projector screen. Cool vibes overall. Best part was the Hatter's Punch - the punch is served in a top hat. Lots of opportunities to dance and have a good time. But if you want to sit, they have that too! I liked sitting and drinking the Hatter's Punch, but also getting up occasionally to dance. It was the best of both worlds. The bathroom was interesting. They only had a bouncer for the women's bathroom and not the men's. Feel like they should do that for both bathrooms. Bathrooms were gross, but it is a bar so keep that in mind. Didn't have too high of expectations, but the bouncer situation was...different. Despite the bathroom situation, everything else was cool. Enjoyed the hat of liquor and dance vibes. Had lunch here so it was pretty empty. Lunch deals were great and the reuben I had was tasty and good sized for $11.

The service was delightful and the food was pretty good, but the noise level was too high for us.

I only like this for the happy hour. Madhatter has one of the cheapest there is. You'll have a hard time finding better prices. Atmosphere can be fun but it can also get annoying. There's another bar that's quieter upstairs. It has a cheap ass happy hour. It's only $5 for rails. That's about as cheap as you can get around here. It's about the only reason to come. You can find similar prices at happy hour at other dive bars, so this place isn't unique. It's good if you're in the area. There's also a food menu. It doesn't have anything particularly interesting. It has a hummus appetizer that's probably the healthiest you can order. This is about $7 for a big portion of hummus and some vegetables. It's kind of like two bars. On the lower level is most of the craziness. The upper level is kind of quieter and that's better for watching a game. read more

I went to happy hour today with a friend and we did not have a good experience. The bartender; Hailey is/was VERY RUDE, discriminatory, & extremely unfriendly. She literally spoke to and helped everyone around my friend and I but completely ignored us. Our original bartender was friendly but he was generally at the opposite end of the bar so communication with him was difficult and Hailey (who's mainly at our end of the bar, ie directly in front of us) was absolutely NO HELP! She was too busy prancing around for these two "locals" at the bar smh! So now on top of this place being dusty & DIRTY with mediocre food, the service was extremely unpleasant once she showed up. Checked out the Madhatter in DC recently with a large group for a friend's birthday brunch. We reserved the room upstairs which fit about 30 of us and this option was the perfect accommodation for our party! The privacy allowed us to have our own birthday party essentially, separate from everyone else in the restaurant. My partner and I had a train to catch so we needed our food to come out in a timely manner. We communicated this to our servers and they were on it! Our meals came out quickly and the quality of the food didn't seem compromised at all. I got the Mad Man's breakfast, which was the perfect, hearty, breakfast if you want a little bit of everything! I wanted both sweet and savory so this option gave me both. It came with bacon, eggs (got mine sunny side up), toast, home fries (which I was able to sub for regular fries) and pancakes. I dipped my fries in the eggs while enjoying the bacon and toast and saved my pancakes for a little sweet dessert after the savory. My party went with the bottomless mimosa option which comes with bottomless mimosas and 1 entree per person. I think this option was worth it, as our servers were actually on top of refilling our mimosas which isn't always the case at other establishments. My breakfast option helped coat my stomach for all those mimosas so not a bad pairing! No pictures of the food this time bc I was enjoying the company of our group--sorry! I honestly can't say this restaurant left an impression on me. It was HU homecoming so we decided to grab a bite before the tailgate. The restaurant was busy but we got two seats at the bar immediately. There was a birthday party on the other side of the restaurant that was quite loud but it's a celebration so live it up !! I came here for the first time this afternoon for brunch and it was a party! This is a brunch spot you definitely have to try. You get that day party vibe with an actual DJ while getting served bottomless mimosas. Who can complain? DJ Mike Miasma played everything from afrobeats to Suavemente and everything in between. People were so turned up they were getting up to dance. That's what I like to see! Anyway, while there are definitely Alice in Wonderland paintings and posters, this restaurant isn't overly whimsical or into keeping up with the whole Alice in Wonderland theme. The venue is really large and has an upstairs and downstairs so space and long wait times shouldn't really be an issue. So, I'm sure you want to hear about the food. I ordered the French toast (cinnamon raisin bread) with sausage and I added eggs as a side. Honestly, the French toast was really good. I smashed! My friends got huevos rancheros and a madman's breakfast, and they both really enjoyed their meals. They mainly have brunch food and I think that this is Madhatter's niche, but I ain't mad at it because they do brunch VERY WELL. I wish I had known a place like this in the city existed last summer! As far as service, our waitress Chelsea(?) was really good. Things are very fast paced and she did a great job of tending to our tables needs as well as maintaining a really great attitude the entire time. We were celebrating my girlfriend's birthday and she offered to bring over a cake and was really sweet about it. I don't think anyone has ever carded me, realized it was my birthday, and offered a complimentary cake before myself or someone in my party requested it, so I thought that was really food. Our experience was neither here nor there. The stars are for the food. The food was good, the service was really less than. Left me feeling like I probably wouldn't come back again. The hostess was a little rude to my friend who originally checked us in. I made a reservation through Yelp because I heard Sunday Brunch can get busy here. The server herself was sweet but my friends coffee was never refilled. Our "bottomless" mimosas sat empty for 20 minutes at one point. We could even get anyone's attention. Once she finally came back I mentioned it to her, she said she would come back more often. 20 minutes in a two hour limit for drinking is significant. The presentation was nice and I get the theme. Definitely a dive bar! Met a girlfriend here for happy hour on a Wednesday after work. Wasn't super packed but most of the bar stools were occupied. We sat off to the side and had to place our orders at the bar (not a big deal). The HH specials here aren't bad and I like that it goes until 8 p.m. I had two of the frozen mangoritas (tasty and has a lil kick to it). The chicken tenders weren't that good though. I absolutely love this place and make it a priority to visit whenever I'm in town. There happy hour is unbeatable. I tend to get the mangoritas and pina coladas during happy hour. The pina colada is a bit stronger but they are both equally good! I highly suggest the old bay wings. That are so full of flavor. I haven't ventured out to other wings yet for the fear of a different flavor not being as good. (Although I highly doubt their other flavors aren't good) The staple "Hat" is awesome. If you have a group of 3 or more I suggest you get it. It's fruity and full of a variety of alcohols. Literally the littest Sunday brunch I've EVER been to in agessssssss! DJ Mike Miasma had the jams playing CONTINUOUSLY! Ppl were actually dancing between bites. At my table we were all swaying, snapping, and dancing. The food was also good! Oh and the unlimited mimosas?! Hunny/Sir, do yourself a favor and get you your $14 worth of unlimited mimosas cuz they keeps em coming! My eggs weren't fried well done, but the sandwich was so good that I just cut out my yolk and left the egg whites. The waffle was good as well. I'm unsure if a reservation was made ahead of time but there was a steady stream of people and tables stayed occupied. I'd suggest making reservations though just to be on the safe side. The restroom was also clean. Ohhhhhhh parking was a real b$@?! this day (Sunday for brunch around 1pm). I literally circled the surrounding area for 30-45min trying to find a park until finally lucking up on one. I still cannot believe I had never heard of or been to this place before. Brunch at Madhatter is an experience to say the least. I've never been to a more lit brunch! The vibe and the energy was off the charts. The DJ was amazing! He kept the crowd hype. I warn you... if you don't like seeing people dancing while you brunch, this is not the place for you. Service was great. We missed our reservation but the host tried her hardest to find us a table and it paid off. I appreciate her effort in really helping us and not just saying there's nothing she could do. Our server was great too. The people dancing got in the way sometimes but she was able to maneuver her way around to check on her tables. Brunch meal prices were reasonable compared to other places in the area. I got a breakfast burrito and it came with home fries. My boyfriend ordered the eggs Chesapeake, which was poached eggs with crabmeat and hollandaise sauce. I enjoyed my burrito. It was very filling. My boyfriend like his food but I think the crabmeat could have used more seasoning. The $15 Bottomless mimosas were worth getting. They were very strong. Pretty sure that's why everyone was so lit. My only gripes are glasses they used for mimosas and the state of the women's bathroom. As much business I know they get, they need to invest in stemless wine glasses. They had these plastic wine glasses and the rim of my glass was sharp on one side. I ended up scratching the corner of my mouth on it. The bathroom needs to be checked more often. My husband and I went to Madhatter on Sunday February 26, 203 @ 1:30 pm for lunch. This was our first time in Washington so we were unaware of this place. All we knew it was a place to get some food and a dew drinks. We sat at the bar and ordered 2 cocktails while we looked over the menu. Started off rough as the bartender gave my husband limes in his drinks (1 cocktail and one water) instead of the lemon he requested. Had to call him back over to fix the problem. Fredy wasn't very attentive but did eventually come over to take our order. We ordered a burger, a Cesar Salad and two more cocktails. What I found strange is he asked me for my credit card before putting the order in. Is that normal in Washington D.C.? Took a little while to get our food even though the place wasn't really that busy. The staff had time to stand around and chat while we ate. Fredy didn't check on us as we ate and only came back to see if he had finished. He removed the plates and didn't come back until I called him over and asked for the check. Check arrives and to my dismay I see a line item of "Open Grat Amount" of $12.98! The gratuity added automatically was at a 22% rate!!!! This wasn't disclosed before we ordered. I know at some places they automatically add a 18% gratuity for parties of 8 or more but for 2 of us??? Oh and at the bottom of the bill it says "Gratuity is not included". Like hell it's not. I love going to Madhatter, it has a great upbeat atmosphere and I always find myself here on the weekends. The bartenders upstairs are the best! Very friendly and very quick service. However, I was there on a Wednesday night and the bartender downstairs was a very rude and bitter old man. I ordered shots and beers for my friends and I, and he was very sharp and used quite offensive language with us. If you're looking for a good place to dance and end the night, I highly recommend the second floor. To be honest I was very hesitant when my friends wanted to come here for brunch as this is often a going out spot. However I was actually pleasantly surprised about the food. We had a large group of 15 people so we had to put a credit card down and my friend even had to sign a contract! I felt that this was a bit extra. They had a pre-fixed menu that included mimosas and an entree. The ore fixed menu did not include coffee which was a bit annoying. The service was very friendly but could have been a bit more prompt on the mimosa refills. So take Madhatter brunch for what it is- if you want to have a boozy brunch with friends and decent food this is a solid option. I preface my 5* rating in that if you're looking for a fancy Michelin stared restaurant this isn't quite it. But if you're looking for a laid back place with good brunch, drinks, and a stocked bar, this is your place. Bottomless mimosas are $15 for two hours. The food was surprisingly phenomenal.
