I came here one with a friend on a random Sunday. I heard so many people say this place was great so I had to try it. I had the burger and I'm a huge burger fan, but the burger was subpar. The music was good inside, but we sat outside because seats were already reserved. I just wasn't a fan of this place at all. I service wasn't the greatest either. They weren't rude, but they were not attentive at all. I probably wouldn't go back here or if I did it wouldn't be my first choice. My friend had the pancakes and she didn't care much about her meal as well. Presentation wasn't the greatest either. The unlimited mimosa option was pretty good though. As many others have mentioned, this is a great spot to be for Sunday Brunch. There are bottomless mimosas and the brunch staples. The atmosphere is lively, with a DJ and impromptu dancing. The decor is a mix of bar and hipster restaurant. I ordered the waffle with bananas on top. I got a side of turkey sausage and homefries. Everything I ordered was pretty standard. For how busy it was, I feel that the service was good. If you are coming here on Sunday, I would highly suggest making a reservation or being prepared to wait until you find an open spot at the bar-it gets that busy. Look buddy - I've been in DC for decades now, and this is my absolute favorite way to close out an evening. Definitely a bit of a dive. If you're into dive bars, the Madhatter is a great choice. Overall I have no strong criticisms of the restaurant, it's just not very highbrow. The food at the Madhatter is decent. Don't expect anything fancy, but quality and taste of the food is fair. The drinks are tasty and well made. Both the food and drinks are a bit overpriced. Unless you are setting out for a dive bar experience, I recommend you go elsewhere because you can get better atmosphere and food for a similar price at several other DC restaurants. Our server was friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is again not fancy. Be sure to check out the men's bathroom, there's a single stall with one toilet and three urinals in that stall. I found that to be an interesting design choice. Great for a dive, but you can certainly do better for the price. read more

To be honest I don't know much about Alice's Wonderland. I just know there's a Alice's Teacup in the city with Madhatter tea set special. So when I first entered Madhatter for my residency interview social, I was pleasantly surprised by its beautiful decor and fairy tale like ambiance. They reserved the second floor with our own bartender for our private event. Our bartender was extremely sweet. Although I wasn't much of a drinker, he cheerfully and endlessly refilled my diet coke glass. At one point he even walked out of his station and handed me a new glass! During our social hours, they brought out platters of thin crusted tomato pizza, chicken fingers, egg rolls, potato skins, and hummus/veggie + pita bread plate, and bacon/sour cream/cheese fries for us to munch on. None of the food were particularly amazing - they just reminded me how poorly I've been eating on my interview trail - grease bomb after grease bomb. - The pizza was tasteless (actually tasted like stale crackers with a slice of dried tomato on top). - The chicken fingers were heavily breaded. - Oil was dripping on one end as I was taking my first bite of the egg roll. - The hummus veggie platter - there were literally 4 carrot sticks, 3 slices of cucumber, and 4 slices of tomato (none of them were cut the right way for u to pick up the hummus dip with? - more fitting to be placed in a burger?). - The potato skin was deep fried with a layer of melt cheese + bacon bits on top - delicious yes but my stomach couldn't take the amount of grease held in 1/2 of one. - And last, the fries were soggy and undercooked. Although there were ample amount of finger food throughout the night thanks to the generosity of the residency programs + residents, I actually left very hungry. I've been here a bunch of times for a bunch of different Happy hour events. The specials they have here are limited but there's something you can find to drink. The Happy hour options food wise aren't bad, the wings are the best. The Old Bay style wings are actually quite tasty and it's too bad that it's not featured at Happy hour, the buffalo ones though are pretty good. The majority of the time I've been here for a quick beer or two and the food is okay. Honestly, sticking with the bar eats is your best bet. The brisket sandwich was too sweet and the potato soup was also pretty bland but all the bar bites are done well, wings, taquitos, that kind of thing. What's weird is that it turns into a nightclub after a while on Saturday nights, can't say that I've ever been there then, just when it was a regular bar. read more

The only thing great about this place is the bottomless mimosa's. I have been here quite a few times and I am never impressed, or actually enjoyed the food. It is always so bland, dry,and tasteless. Great for a party atmosphere, but for a brunch? I would not recommend, if you are looking for great food and mimosa's. Also every time I have been, the host in the front are very pleasant and helpful, but the waiting staff were very slow and it seemed as if our request were a bother. I've been to Madhatter multiple times to go out, for happy hour, etc... This review is for their brunch. I came on a Saturday afternoon. They would not seat us until our entire party was present even though it was dead empty. I ordered the breakfast sandwich, which had a "buttery biscuit", 2 eggs, sausage, cheese, and a side of home fries. The eggs were possibly the worst eggs I've ever had. They were definitely cooked way in advance and were sitting on a hot plate. They were extremely rubbery and overcooked. The "biscuit" tasted okay, but it was not a biscuit. It was just bread. I got the smallest serving of home fries. I think I could have fit all of the potatoes on 1 fork. The price on the menu also did not reflect what was on my receipt. It said $10 on the menu, but I got charged $10.50. The 50 cents is an insignificant amount of money, but still...annoying. All in all, it was a pretty disappointing experience, and I will not be coming back for brunch anytime soon. read more

Absolutely terrible customer service. I made a reservation here a month ago for New Year's Eve. I previously worked in DC and told my wife this is where we should go. I get to the door at 9pm and they tell me that they cannot honor my reservation because they closed at 5pm for a private event. Then why was I told to confirm my reservation yesterday? In the one month I had the reservation they couldn't let me know they were closing? Where else am I supposed to grab dinner at 9pm New Year's Eve in DC? Last night, my wife and I had reserved a room for us and 10 friends to celebrate her birthday. I had made the reservations via e-mail with Missy, who told us that we weren't going to be charged a minimum for the room and made no indication on a time limit, even though I had asked about one. We really appreciated her efforts to accommodate us. We arrived at 7:00, and were escorted to a private room on the first floor. After a few of our friends arrived and we started ordering drinks, my wife was pulled aside by a manager (did not receive a name, but he was wearing a pink graphic t-shirt) who informed her that we could only have the room until 8:30. When she told him that wasn't a lot of time for 12 people to order food and drinks, he RUDELY responded by suggesting if everyone would have show up on time, it is plenty of time. He also kept hassling her, when the reservation was under my name. I felt as though he thought he could exert his authority easier with her than if he attempted to talk to me. We were then informed that we would be taken to a room upstairs that we could have for longer, and the reason for this was the private room downstairs was used for storage once the dance floor opened. Really? We did not make an off-the-wall reservation. Madhatter is accustomed to hosting parties. Why would we be put in the party room that gets turned into a storage room 1.5 hours after our reservation began? After waiting a very long time for the room upstairs to be prepared, which we were not happy about because it was eating into our time limit that we were only just informed about, we were taken upstairs and then experienced another long wait just for a waiter to continue taking drink orders. I do want to highlight the great job our main waiter Javier did to serve our party. We were also happy with the food and drinks ordered, and experienced no major issues with bar service afterwards. I just did not appreciate the lack of practicality the manager showed us. How does it make sense to expect a 12-person party to be done in 1.5 hours? With the reservation being at dinner time, we were anticipating on being there for awhile ordering meals and drinks. It's also a party. We're naturally going to want time to socialize. Also, the manager's rudeness towards my wife was completely uncalled for. It was just clear that there was a lot of disorganization in their party hosting realm, and when a restaurant/bar specializes in party hosting, it's difficult to understand why. I sincerely hope Madhatter understands that there seems to be consistent pattern of customers with this same experience. read more

I can pretty much have a good time no matter where I go, but I wouldn't recommend hitting this place up for a night out unless you like overcrowded bars filled with college students looking to hookup and get super turnt. They play decent music, have TVs and projectors, and drop confetti on the main dance floor, but I'm in my late 20s now, so this just isn't the place for people my age. I had the veggie skillet, I expected it to have some flavor, some salt, something. I got bland vegetables with sunny side eggs on top. I tried to revive it with salt and hot sauce after the fact, but it was worthless. I couldn't get through half of that plate. They have a cool hot sauce bar, although it's very excessive. There are a lot of hot sauces, they have cool titles and art but hard to choose because they aren't organized by flavor or heat level? Someone out there would get a kick out of trying them all though. I also got a side pancake that was only lukewarm and tasted like flour.. Guys...do not order food here by any means. The $5 happy hour nachos may seem like a steal but I swear to you, it's just dollar store tortilla chips with some microwaved kraft cheese slices on them. Same goes for the $5 happy hour pizza - literally a small frozen pizza microwaved on a plate. I guarantee that You will not be able to finish any of the food because either it has become stale from the microwave or it has become soggy from all that condensation. Yum. The drinks are dirt cheap too and I have to say I gave two stars because they have a decent selection of beers and cocktails but pretty much everything else is just watered down juice. I'm sure this bar has a different vibe on the weekends but as far as happy hour drinks and food, take yo-self and the ladies somewhere else because there is a huge selection of places to go to in DC (might I suggest dirty Martini?) with great deals and decent food. The staff doesn't seem very interested in making sure we were seated, served or satisfied. I won't go out of my way to come back or really recommend to anyone. So I tested out the Mad Hatter on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch after reading all the great reviews and unfortunately I wasn't impressed :( Since I was considering this restaraunt for a brunch birthday celebration it was a must I go in and try a brunch entree. I chose the fried chicken and waffles. Immediately I was turned all the way off. The chicken was completely OVER FRIED with little meat to actually eat. Also the establishment isn't as updated as it could be. I was going to let that slide however if the food was bomb because the prices were great for the DC area. But I was not impressed with the chicken and waffles. The best part of the experience was the hat drink. We definitely had a buzz and my significant other and I were unable to finish it. Where do I start ‍ first walking in, I thought there was going to be this cool Alice in Wonderland vibe, but I didn't get a good sense of that. It was just lacking.... something. Now, onto the important stuff. No one said a word to us when we walked in. We felt stupid trying figure where we needed to be to get seated. We finally asked the busser we could get the attention of. We were seated at this dirty, awkwardly placed table. Took 25 minutes for Ianyone to even take our order. I got my bar beverage before my mom got her coke. Took over an hour and a half for our meals to be placed on the table. I got a burger, which was good, and Mac n cheese, which had a weird taste to it. The nastiest spoon was placed with the mac n cheese. It was so gross. Old, hard, stale food on the spoon. My mom got the Texas Style Barbeque Brisket, which she said was good. The food is the only reason this place got 2 stars and not 1. I ordered a chocolate cake to go, which was good. I love their happy hour! Mangoritas and appetizers for $5, I'm all about it! We walked in here by random on our way to another bar but we saw the sign and decided to stop in. I'm so glad we did. Our barista was so nice! The only thing I would have liked more is to get a mangorita (mango margarita) without the alcohol being pre-mixed into the drink. When you pre-mix it you don't get the full impact of the drink. Also the $5 appetizers were pretty big, I was expecting small sizes but I ordered the nachos and they were an actual full plate. My review is solely based on the party I threw in the upstairs room. The event planner Nicki was very accommodating in every way possible. I did an event for about 25 people with a two hour open bar and it went smooth. Our bartender was really nice sociable, the food was great and the vibe was just good. My only complaint is that although it's an old building, the upstairs drastically needs to be renovated. read more

I had an altercation with the older bartender who works on Monday evening. I was denied service because of this employee. Working in the hospitality industry for over 10 years, I have never had an experience where a patron was denied service because of a particular employee who was working that evening. To deny a repeat guest for one instance with a single employee who works ONE night out of the week is completely absurd. ​I have been coming to Madhatters for over 2 years and have NEVER had any conflict with any of the other employees. I am truly displeased with the fact that this employee virtually met no consequences for getting into a physical alteraction with a customer , let alone a woman. I will be getting the owners contact info . Because to be denied service at a bar where I pay money for services to be denied by said service when the employee is of Caucasian decent feels a lot like segregation as a black woman. I am truly disgusted with how the managers have handled this situation. And then to tell me that I can't come on a certain day because he is working is quite astonishing. To allow him to not service me, but still allow him to work , and not provide any accommodations for me as a patron is just bad business. I am highly disappointed with this experience and overall how the managers at madhater chose to glaze over a situation with such severity and not take any real action aside from denying service to PAYING patron. read more

But one of our party quickly received their wings two of us waited another ten minutes for the waitress to come back to retake our order. The wings had absolutely no sauce or seasoning on them.
