This weekend we went to Alps diner for breakfast and I enjoyed it. I had the lumberjack, which was Canadian bacon regular bacon, eggs, Home fries and pancakes. It was so big. I couldn't even finish it. Pancakes were tasty as were the eggs. The meat was cooked nicely. I particularly like the home of fries. They were brown, which is actually a rarity. Very good diner.

They have multigrain bread which was delicious and the turkey is real turkey breast that is sliced generously. The lettuce tomato were fresh and the bacon was thick sliced and generous. I didn't want french fries so I opted for coleslaw and I got a side substituted. The coleslaw could've had more salt and lacked real flavor and tartness, but it did the trick. The Turkey club, however, was exceptional. My boyfriend got the lumberjack breakfast. It was very generous. Cook cooked well and he enjoyed it.

Our server was incredibly friendly and welcoming, took the time to explain the menu, and was especially attentive to our granddaughter. Since there isn't a kids' menu, she offered suggestions that worked perfectly for her. Everything came out exactly as ordered. The wings were delicious, and they kindly served the sauce on the side so they weren't too spicy for our granddaughter. The pizza was absolutely worth the extra wait--the tomatoes and cheese were clearly top-shelf ingredients and made for an outstanding pie. To top it all off, the owners were at the door when we left and took the time to chat with us and our granddaughter. Such a nice, hospitable touch that made us feel truly welcome. We'll definitely be back!

Everything is stacked right, it holds together better than most, and the flavor balance is perfect. You get crispy, savory, melty, salty, all in one bite. Every time. I drive about 12 miles to get here which says a lot. It also happens to fall right between home and work so it's become my go-to detour on Fridays. Early lunch stop or mid-shift reset, it never disappoints. Portions are legit and they don't skimp on fillings. You're full but not destroyed. The spot has that Jersey counter-shop feel. Order, grab a seat if there's one open, or take it to go and wreck it in your car. Either way the food travels well and the quality doesn't drop off. There is limited space inside to enjoy the freshest bite but tables revolve quickly. If you're into fat sandwiches or never had one done right, this is the place. Real ingredients, no shortcuts, every sandwich feels like someone actually cared about stacking it right. Easily five stars. Worth the drive. Worth the mess.

However, this review is not about that experience. Let's start with the service. I placed my order with John, who was pleasant and easy to deal with. After speaking with the owner on Yelp, he suggested that some of my original issues may have been due to the timing and the fact that my order was delivered, which could have affected the quality. Taking that into account, I ordered the same item again. This time, the service was good, and I got home with the food piping hot. The issue I previously had with the burger does seem to have been caused by delivery time, as it was much better this time around. Unfortunately, the fries were just as disappointing. They were cold as soon as I opened the packaging, though at least they didn't have the old oil taste this time. Instead, it was very obvious they were frozen fries--confirmed by the presence of a plastic bag of frozen fries. They were again unseasoned, not even lightly salted, and somehow managed to be both cold and burnt at the same time. One thing that concerned me was the staffing. There were four employees present, but only two seemed to actually be working. John appeared to be leading things and taking orders, and there was someone cooking. One employee in a beanie seemed mostly idle, though I overheard something about deliveries, so I assume he may have been the delivery driver. Another employee, who looked around my age, didn't appear to be doing anything at all. That was a bit concerning. Overall, I updated my original rating from 2 stars to 3 stars. It was fine, but nothing impressive. If I were rating it out of 10, I'd give it a 4/10. The burger was good in terms of softness, but the onion rings and bacon lacked the crunch I was expecting. They were mostly soggy, though still an improvement compared to my first experience. The burger patty itself, without toppings, tasted dense and brick-like. If the fries had been good, I honestly would've rated this closer to a 7/10. However, I had to dock several points because I don't understand how fries can be both burnt and cold at the same time, nor how the quality managed to decline further between visits--from tasting like old oil to tasting unmistakably frozen and completely unseasoned. If I'm in the area, I might stop by for the burger alone, but even then I'd have to be in a very specific mood. The most disappointing part is that the owner personally encouraged me to give it another try. While one issue from my original visit was resolved, the fries somehow got worse. I know I'm ranting about the fries, but honestly--how do you mess up fries this badly?

The owner is usually present and is very welcoming and nice to talk to. The food has always been good, so far. However.........the customer service provided by a 'handful' of servers is just so inconsistent. One server is always in a mood so you never know you will get from him. The bar staff is truly unprofessional with some of their behavior, personal phone calls, eating at the counter..... I'll give it another shot but it's time for management to step in and truly address what professional customer service looks like.

As an aside, Sunday afternoon to me is pretty much dictionary definition Italian dinner so I would expect Popolari's best for that. I hope for their sake that's not what we got. This is a bit of an odd spot for a restaurant. This area of Little Falls is unrecognizable compared to a few years ago, and it's not really a walkable area - the downtown area is probably 15-20 minutes away by foot, and Popolari is undoubtedly benefiting primarily from the insane number of condos/townhouses that have cropped up across the street (which is making day-to-day traffic a nightmare, but that's not their fault - that's probably on Mayor Damiano and his aggressive building up of the town without doing the same for the basic infrastructure surrounding it). The parking situation here is pretty rough - there's literally four spots out front with seating for significantly more than that inside, so I would imagine most people are either foregoing sit-down and getting takeout, or just parking on the street within the block or so. Pretty cozy spot. I'm not trying to be insulting, but in a lot of ways this felt like a by-the-slice, calzones, etc. type of pizza place masquerading as a bougie Montclair Italian restaurant. It has an Italian car propped outside and some cool Euro 60s shizzle on the walls. It was pretty empty when we showed up and we had our pick of spacious booths to the side. My one chum who came with me both times commented that it feels more comfortable at night, which I would agree with. I opted for the Vodka Chicken Parm on the lunch specials menu (one of my fave dishes/specialty pizzas). It was just okay. Not particularly flavorful and it was clearly reheated like a slice of pizza would be, so the high temp overwhelmed the profile, which was a shame. I had some pasta left over and just didn't waste the calories on it. Worse than that though was the Creme Brulee I had for dessert. Honestly the worst I've had. From what I tasted, it was literally just Jell-O pudding (and it might have been the off-brand of that) with a very thick, cheap sugar layer on top. The temperature of the pudding (this was not the custard it should have been, for sure) varied dramatically bite to bite; it should have been cool but parts of it were randomly hot presumably from inexperienced sugar torching. I'm very surprised an Italian restaurant would push out a substandard product like that. The service was friendly but also not the best. Our waiter (we had the same one both times) was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. But - and this to me is likely on management more than him specifically - he didn't know to bring our food out at the same time, which is pretty much hospitality 101. This happened during both visits, where someone got their food and then awkwardly waited between five to 10 minutes for the other plates to arrive. And within this one specific meal, it happened for both the entrees and the desserts. It's a shame. The price point to me is pretty competitive, and it's a convenient location for me. But when the service and the food just aren't very good, it's tough to justify giving this place another shot. I have to assume the original Bloomfield location is significantly better.
