We arrived 15 minutes until closing and asked for a glass of Mischievous. We were told by the rude woman behind the counter that is was too close to closing so she would not be opening up a bottle. However, we could purchase a full bottle if we wanted to. Their tasting room was full of people and several others walked in when we did. Nah, we won't be back, there are too many wineries nearby to choose from. Good bye! read more

This is long but if I am going to give a rare one-star review, I feel it's only fair to share exactly why.... My husband and I took my parents along to Macchia and were looking forward to a wonderful experience after hearing from several friends how good their wines are. Bottom line: the four of us agreed that this was the worst experience at any winery, from Napa/Sonoma/Healdsburg to Murphys to Lodi. If the wines are delicious here I lost all interest due to the following factors: 1) pay up front -- we were first asked if we were members of the wine club and then to immediately pay $5 each for the tasting. I found this initial "welcome" quite unprofessional and rude, especially since we weren't told what that included or seen the list of wines yet. I have no problem paying for a tasting when I feel welcomed and have had a chance to review the list. 2) complaining in front of tasters -- we came in at the same time as two others, and then the phone rang. A group called to see if it was okay that their party came in and as soon as the call ended, the woman and man behind the counter began complaining that they needed more heads up for large groups but at least they called, and it's getting too busy...and on and on. 3) awful service -- my mom wanted to know if the grapes were grown nearby but the woman pouring for us was short with her responses, rude with her tone, and insincere. She had no clue and could have been courteous, even just a little. The only time she was nice was after the final pour and it was time to tell us about the wine club. 4) less than half the wines on the list were available for tasting -- if you're sold out, that's one thing. If you have a list of 10+ wines and are only serving four or five, say so up front before we fork over $5. 5) tiny tastes -- I've never had less wine in a glass at a tasting. There's no point in sharing a tasting since you can barely taste that little puddle of red at the bottom of the glass. Listen up Macchia, Business 101 tips: 1) hire folks who enjoy wine and don't make it seem like they're stuck doing a chore. You want nice people who are educated about wine, enjoy wine and love meeting folks who enjoy wine, too. Make a good first impression...and a second...and a third. 2) Stop with the $5 up front tasting. At the very least, be kinder about your approach and try "Welcome to Macchia, our tastings are $5 and there are four wines that we are offering today but we do list all of them so you can view a description of all the wines we offer". 3) Make a list of wines you're pouring that day. Nobody wants to see a long list and be served less than half on a list. Offer sincere, valid reasons why your other wines are not being poured or more bottles can't be opened. Unfortunately, this visit left such an awful taste in my mouth that although I told my family I'd be willing to give Macchia a try on another day -- I have no desire. We bought several bottles at other wineries that day but couldn't have left Macchia faster. read more

I have done my fair share of wine tasting and was NOT impressed with the wine Macchia. The tasting room is cozy with dogs roaming around. The tasting room staff might have just been having a hard day, but 2 of the 3 working this particular Sunday were not people I would EVER allow behind my tasting room bar. My take on the wines:most of the wines were too overly extracted and Jammy. While some may enjoy the cute names given to each SKU, it's not my cup of tea. Make a good bottle of wine and you don't need a cute name to sell it. read more

What a disappointment! This place is so far out of the way and NOT worth the trek! It is dark and dreary inside and out. The staff was inattentive and had an attitude (which got worse when we said we weren't interested in purchasing). Pours were scant and I wish I could say that the wines made up for it but they didn't. I've never been so disappointed by a winery. If you want a better bet - go visit PASOS VINEYARDS - they have outstanding service and extremely friendly staff. The winemaker, Antonio Pasos, was there too as well. They have food to munch on while you taste and it was one of the best experiences I've had tasting -- we stayed there for hours! SUMMARY - Skip Macchia and go to Pasos! You'll be happy you did! read more

I am soooo happy to get home and read these reviews. Upon entering, I thought it may just be me and my husband. We had just come from a bed and breakfast in Lockeford and were dressed quite comfortable (had blueberry french toast on my britches). I felt maybe that is why Tanya, the daughter, was so impulsively abrasive and raw. I was actually stunned and shaken by her tone. We went in and roamed around the store but it was quite busy but we weren't worried about taking our time. My husband had suggested this winery because he liked it and I once made a map for he and his friends that included a stop here on their way back home to Sacramento. They loved it and I wasn't present, so he wanted me to experience it. *deleted rant* I really wanted to go on a long rant about the GM, Tanya. I won't because all that matters is she is rude and unwelcoming. *understatement- I digress :(* We stayed because the mom (owner) was so incredibly nice. The wines were fantastic. It may have been the best of two days worth if not for the GM. *regressive deleted rant* Can't help myself. *regressive deleted rant* okay, just one... I actually heard her say, "I wish they would all just leave". Maybe she wasn't told that we are the reason she has a job and it really is far from respectful of her wonderfully gracious mom. Great Petit Syrah and we usually don't favor them. Zins are fantastic. This winery really should have had a good 5 stars with no question. One more thing, I wanted to give one star. I also wanted to buy several wines. Too bad. It makes me feel really bad (being a lodi girl and rotary member) that I had been sending so many people here. read more

Came down for 5 days to celebrate my birthday. Visited this winery as one of the many we've visited. Didn't like the greeting!! Person on the phone was not friendly at all as you have to call them and let them know you are here and they'll come out and greet you. Once we told her we wanted to do the wine tastings, she gave us the menu of the wines included in the tasting, brought out our flights , didn't provide any description of the wines, dropped them off and went on her merry way!!!! I know you have to keep your distance but the purpose of a wine tasting is to find out more about the wines. This was our last day to visit wineries and out of 8 wineries this service was horrible!! If you coming during the purple phase of the pandemic you may want to skip this winery!!!! read more

We made our reservations online, it let us book for 4:30pm for a party of 8. On arrival we were greeted with THEE rudest employee ever. Stating we only have you down for a party of 4, when I attempted to show her our confirmation she loudly states Per the County regulations we can't have parties greater than 6. We ask if she was be able to split us up in two parties of 4 which she obliged. We sit down, she takes our order after taking our payment she states we close in 10 minutes. When she returns with our flights and bottles we receive an email that our reservation has been canceled. SHADY SHADY SHADY... it's too bad because the grounds were beautiful and the wine was good. I'll never return and due to the service I would not recommend. However maybe it was just a fluke ‍ read more

I've been attending the Wine & Chocolate tasting since I discovered its existence in 2012. During which I've gone to Macchia winery at least 5 times. Macchia continually keeps upping their game. My friends and I have been so impressed, not only with their tantalizing wines, but the way they've progressively draw in the crowds during the Wine & Chocolate event. They have an assortment of vendors, a band, art display, a (larger than most) choice of indulgent snacks and plenty of seating, which makes this place a must-go-to. And if all that wasn't impressive enough, the inside tasting counter was packed, there were 10 people in our group. As we enjoyed one of our tastings, the owner took the time to leave the very busy counter, walk over to us and graciously ask what other wine would we'd like to try. He took great customer service to another level. Needless to say, we pretty much left Macchia with a few bottles of wine to enjoy later. I recommend the Mischievous Zinfandel and Ridiculous Rose. Have a great time! read more

My favorite old vine zin! They have great events there too. This weekend was a release party, everyone got to try all the new stuff. pizza was on hand as well as a live band and a free photo booth. lots of people hanging around having a good time. The weather was perfect as well. read more

They had the cutest little dogs running around. One older dog was the glutton of punishment directly from the other puppy. He took it all in stride and didn't seem to mind a bit. The titles of these wines reminded me of the Berkeley Cafe Gratitude (not in a good way). We tried Vivacious, Amorous, Infamous, Luxurious, Notorious, Prestigious, Bodacious, and Dangerous but ended up only buying one bottle of their Mischievous - an old vine zin. read more

My girlfriend and I have been touring wineries across the country for a few years and Macchia is the best wine for the best price I've ever seen. Zinfandel heaven. The wines were all exactly the style we prefer, jammy yet tannic. A hard balance that they achieve in many of their labels, each edging on a different side of the Zin style. Generous '11 - Smooth, chocolate cherry aromas, Jammy with butterscotch and just a little tannic bite to balance it together. One of our favorites! Ambitious '11 - Cranapple, with tannic astringency. Made by the winemakers son. Outrageous '12 - Old vine Lodi, Sherry on the nose, smooth with cranberry and high alcohol. Voluptuous - '11 Prune and black currants flavor with tannins at the finish Oblivious '11 - Dry, pepper cola almost fizz finish Adventurous - '11 Smooth chocolate vanilla and pepper finish SERIOUS '11 - BEST WINE EVER - An intangible refined essence lifts this beyond the other Zins. Still has the great jammy, and tannic balance of the rest but so smooth it will make you consider quitting your day job to become a vintner. I have no idea how the other reviewers received poor service. Julie and Jason were the nicest people I've ever had serve me at a winery. Julie was so much fun and shared her love of the wines. Jason spontaneously gave us a full tour in the middle of our tasting. Which lasted 2 hours! They were generous with their pours and opened every bottle they had! I loved it all so much I joined the wine club and bought a mixed case. Best wine in CA I've had and for a price that any wine lover can afford! At Macchia their motto is spot on, 'It's all good'! read more

One of my favorite Wineries around. My wife and I came through here for the Wine and chocolate event. this is the only place that really stood out. The wines were amazing. I bought a could bottles. They had the best food! I think it was Swedish meatballs in a chocolate chipotle sauce. AWESOME! The workers were not very friendly, but that was probably because it was a busy event. I have been wanting to go back again. It is my wife's favorite. read more

Let me start by saying my family has been members here for a long time and their home was few houses down from macchia. My wife and I have also been members but the short blonde lady needs to go very rude snippy comments very embarrassing for a business. I even brought a group of 4 new friends there in which after visiting they said they wouldn't be back because of her attitude. Way to go macchia on customer service, I probably will cancel my membership as well after the experience, I want a place that's cordial to my friends and family. read more

My wife and I have been wine club members at Macchia for years. They have so many fabulous wines. We particularly enjoy their Zinfandel and Sangiovese. It's a fun wine club to be a member of and they often have great deals on wine for their members. read more

Just came to the Spring Release Party and had some serious fun. For $10 you get to try like 18 different wines, and barrel taste as well. They had a live band that played for the whole time. The food was great because they had a $5 taco bar, where you can get fresh carnitas tacos with rice and beans. They also had wood fired pizza, which would go great with the Zin, but you had to order a whole pizza and wait for them to cook it. I wish we had more patience. The Zins are definitely fruit-forward, a little jamy, with the best ones coming from Amador County. I really liked the 2009 Petite Syrah, and at $24 a bottle not bad pricing, so I had to pick up a bottle of that. The naming is really confusing, not a big fan of all the 'ous' words. Then again, this is Lodi not Napa, so it is nice to come to a more relaxed low key winery. read more

Discovered this treasure of a tasting room today! Loved their grounds and tasting room (jewelry & cute gifts for sale too!) Rob was our wine steward today & he made it a great experience.. Described the wines thoroughly, he knows his stuff! Enjoyed all the varieties, and will consider their wine club also. Cheers! read more

My girlfriends and I came here for my bachelorette weekend and had the BEST time! The wine was delicious, atmosphere was second to none, and our tasting host, Julie, was incredible! All of the staff at Macchia made us feel at home and were so helpful with all our needs, including helping us get to our next reservation! I would give Macchia 100 stars if I could and couldn't recommend this place enough! We loved it so much we are going back for another girls trip in a few weeks! Thanks to everybody at Macchia!! read more

The Zinfindale is the best Ive had in years!!! By far surpasses anything I've had in Lodi. It's Napa status!!! They make delicious port too. And the petite Syrah was excellent!!! read more

Decided to come to Macchia because they allow picnic lunches and have live music on the weekends. Made reservations and due to horribly traffic we were terribly late. Fortunately that did not impact our reservations and the hosts were still incredibly gracious. The service here was wonderful and they offered my two birthday friends something special. Beautiful setting and very good wines. read more

The winery has an amazing outside area for folks to hang out and picnic. Lots of space and seems kid friendly. The wines were tasty too! We did buy a few bottles to take home. Now I was not impressed with the customer service. It was lacking. It was not that crowded (a tad busy but not swamped) and it felt like the staff did not know how to balance their groups. The staff really do make an experience for someone and we left feeling not impressed with the overall experience. read more

One of our favorites in Lodi. Many awarding winning wines, including fabulous Zinfandels and Barberas that have been recognized as top Barberas produced outside of Italy. Great hospitality room, friendly staff, beautiful grounds -- plus bocci ball court -- for lounging, picnics, or live music. Became a wine club member upon my first visit years ago -- the wine club & special wine club events are outstanding. Highly recommend a visit if you're in Lodi. Be sure to get on their mailing list so you can join the many fun events Macchia hosts throughout the year. read more

Enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at Macchia. Small tasting room w/ a cute gift shop of blingy items. Great flight of Zins; think they poured 5 different ones. Ended up joining their club:) read more

Very friendly pourer today. I bought the native, it was lighter red, very interesting. Their port is really good too..dangerous good. Loved their courtyard, lot of shade. Nice breeze on warm summer day. Could stay here all day ;) read more

I have to admit, the wine here is pretty good. Not the best Lodi has to offer, but def in the top 3rd. However, had the most uncomfortable visit here and can't imagine that I'd return. I've never felt so pressured to sign up for wine club before, but the guy pouring brought every single one of our conversations back to how we need to be wine club members because they have the most down to earth tasting room.. not very down to earth to pressure me into wine club every 2minutes of my tasting. I'll pass, there's much better wine clubs to join in Lodi anyways. read more

The Maccia family is always so kind. Their estate is gorgeous and there always seems to be something happening whether it be live music or a game of horseshoe. I love the atmosphere, I just wish I was more of a Zin-lover since many of their wines are zin based. read more

We visited for W&C weekend. Very organized. They had an area clearly marked for wine club members and then the back patio was dedicated to the event. The grounds are lovely, wines good. Staff not too personable but courteous. The wines, beautiful grounds, music and snacks made up for it. I need that meatball recipe! :) read more

Wines were amazing! We enjoyed the atmosphere and those working at the winery. Rob poured for us today and was positive, upbeat and very friendly. The outdoor live music was a pleasant addition. We will definitely be back many times to enjoy their wine and all they offer. read more

Macchia is hands down my favorite wine in all of CA, especially their Oblivious line. I remember when they first opened and since then they have been doing nothing but getting better. If you are a fan of Zinfandel wines, Macchia must be on your list of wineries to check out. Their staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines they pour. Their tasting room is intimate and cozy. I took a bottle of Oblivious to a friend of mine and he became an instant fan. If you like late harvest wines, they have a late harvest Zinfandel that is truly great. Not overly sweet, but just enough to let you know it's something special. Great people, great wines at great prices. Check them out. read more

Nice homey feel with friendly staff and flexible seating options. This is the place that convinced me that zinfandel is a solid option. I LOVE ALL of their wines!!! My new favorite in Lodi. So worth adding this winery to your list when you visit. The reds are phenomenal. I really love "Voluptuous." Really good wine and awesome people! Has a great family feel to this place!!

So typical of Yelp are the mixed reviews. My wife and I visited yesterday in the middle of a heat wave that kept the crowds to a minimum. Yay for us! The last tasting (since we save the best for last) was Macchia. Hands down, in my humble opinion, the best Zinfandels around Lodi. Bought a couple to drink now, and a bottle of 2011 Serious that I paid $50.00 (a lot for me) that I will lay down for a few years. One of the major complaints that I see on this site is the tasting room experience. I have to compliment the LOVELY Vanessa and her cohort, the LIVELY Jason (tasting room mgr.) on their welcoming attitude, knowledge of their wines, and attention paid to the customers. They really made the tasting experience a fun one. I do understand how the people behind the tasting bar can make or break your tasting experience, but this was certainly a good one. read more

Absolutely my favorite winery this round in Lodi! Loved the one-of-a-kind greeting by two beautiful Boxer's! The wine was so tasty, I specifically loved the "Devious" wine myself. The lady helping us was helpful and friendly. The house is quaint and cute and FILLED with awards, which they absolutely deserved every one judging by the wines I tried. Thanks for the hospitality and keeping doing exactly what you guys are doing, its fantastic! read more

I give the 2016 Zinfandel Victorious 5 stars. As far goes the energy with the customer service 2 stars. Walked in greeted by the gentleman that was at the counter he was helping some other customers. But he was friendly. As for when the 2 female's came out to help, the one that decided to help us she was not friendly at all with her fake smiles. As the wine tasting was going by tried to make conversation but couldn't get much from her. Just a little tip Next time if you don't want to help us or even make conversation move on to the next and don't waste your time. You didn't make us feel comfortable or welcomed. Thanks Macchia Winery for some good wine but no thanks to the customer service. read more

Friendly and fun place. Amazing wines without that snotty, stuck up Napa Valley wine culture. I have been coming to Macchia since they opened and well before they were at their current location. These people make wine that make you LOVE red wine, something I didn't think possible for some of my friends and family. To counter some people's negative reviews on here, their move toward a nearly wine club only model to me speaks to their insistence on quality and the craft nature of their winery. They don't want to be in nationwide distribution if it means losing the close knit ties to the community and the family touch that inscribes quality in every wine they make and every event they produce. They have a quality that can't be beat and are wonderful people to boot with an adorable tasting room and set up. read more

Macchia 2010 Nebbiolo aka "Vivacious" Found this wine in my February wine club package. In the glass it had clean, seductive aromatics and a dark impenetrable color. I found the wine to be richly textured, with a nice balance between oak, fruit and acidity. All followed by a pleasant finish. A very nice wine to accompany a meal or on its own. My hat is off to Tim and crew. Nice job. read more
