I have done my fair share of wine tasting and was NOT impressed with the wine Macchia. The tasting room is cozy with dogs roaming around. The tasting room staff might have just been having a hard day, but 2 of the 3 working this particular Sunday were not people I would EVER allow behind my tasting room bar. My take on the wines:most of the wines were too overly extracted and Jammy. While some may enjoy the cute names given to each SKU, it's not my cup of tea. Make a good bottle of wine and you don't need a cute name to sell it. read more

What a disappointment! This place is so far out of the way and NOT worth the trek! It is dark and dreary inside and out. The staff was inattentive and had an attitude (which got worse when we said we weren't interested in purchasing). Pours were scant and I wish I could say that the wines made up for it but they didn't. I've never been so disappointed by a winery. If you want a better bet - go visit PASOS VINEYARDS - they have outstanding service and extremely friendly staff. The winemaker, Antonio Pasos, was there too as well. They have food to munch on while you taste and it was one of the best experiences I've had tasting -- we stayed there for hours! SUMMARY - Skip Macchia and go to Pasos! I am soooo happy to get home and read these reviews. Upon entering, I thought it may just be me and my husband. We had just come from a bed and breakfast in Lockeford and were dressed quite comfortable (had blueberry french toast on my britches). I felt maybe that is why Tanya, the daughter, was so impulsively abrasive and raw. I was actually stunned and shaken by her tone. We went in and roamed around the store but it was quite busy but we weren't worried about taking our time. My husband had suggested this winery because he liked it and I once made a map for he and his friends that included a stop here on their way back home to Sacramento. They loved it and I wasn't present, so he wanted me to experience it. *deleted rant* I really wanted to go on a long rant about the GM, Tanya. I won't because all that matters is she is rude and unwelcoming. *understatement- I digress :(* We stayed because the mom (owner) was so incredibly nice. The wines were fantastic. It may have been the best of two days worth if not for the GM. *regressive deleted rant* Can't help myself. *regressive deleted rant* okay, just one... I actually heard her say, "I wish they would all just leave". Maybe she wasn't told that we are the reason she has a job and it really is far from respectful of her wonderfully gracious mom. Great Petit Syrah and we usually don't favor them. Zins are fantastic. This winery really should have had a good 5 stars with no question. One more thing, I wanted to give one star. My girlfriends and I came here for my bachelorette weekend and had the BEST time! The wine was delicious, atmosphere was second to none, and our tasting host, Julie, was incredible! All of the staff at Macchia made us feel at home and were so helpful with all our needs, including helping us get to our next reservation! Decided to come to Macchia because they allow picnic lunches and have live music on the weekends. Made reservations and due to horribly traffic we were terribly late. Fortunately that did not impact our reservations and the hosts were still incredibly gracious. The service here was wonderful and they offered my two birthday friends something special. They had the cutest little dogs running around. One older dog was the glutton of punishment directly from the other puppy. He took it all in stride and didn't seem to mind a bit. The titles of these wines reminded me of the Berkeley Cafe Gratitude (not in a good way). We tried Vivacious, Amorous, Infamous, Luxurious, Notorious, Prestigious, Bodacious, and Dangerous but ended up only buying one bottle of their Mischievous - an old vine zin. read more

My girlfriend and I have been touring wineries across the country for a few years and Macchia is the best wine for the best price I've ever seen. Zinfandel heaven. The wines were all exactly the style we prefer, jammy yet tannic. A hard balance that they achieve in many of their labels, each edging on a different side of the Zin style. Generous '11 - Smooth, chocolate cherry aromas, Jammy with butterscotch and just a little tannic bite to balance it together. One of our favorites! Ambitious '11 - Cranapple, with tannic astringency. Made by the winemakers son. Outrageous '12 - Old vine Lodi, Sherry on the nose, smooth with cranberry and high alcohol. Voluptuous - '11 Prune and black currants flavor with tannins at the finish Oblivious '11 - Dry, pepper cola almost fizz finish Adventurous - '11 Smooth chocolate vanilla and pepper finish SERIOUS '11 - BEST WINE EVER - An intangible refined essence lifts this beyond the other Zins. Still has the great jammy, and tannic balance of the rest but so smooth it will make you consider quitting your day job to become a vintner. I have no idea how the other reviewers received poor service. Julie and Jason were the nicest people I've ever had serve me at a winery. Julie was so much fun and shared her love of the wines. Jason spontaneously gave us a full tour in the middle of our tasting. Which lasted 2 hours! They were generous with their pours and opened every bottle they had! I loved it all so much I joined the wine club and bought a mixed case. Best wine in CA I've had and for a price that any wine lover can afford! One of my favorite Wineries around. My wife and I came through here for the Wine and chocolate event. this is the only place that really stood out. The wines were amazing. I bought a could bottles. They had the best food! I think it was Swedish meatballs in a chocolate chipotle sauce. AWESOME! The workers were not very friendly, but that was probably because it was a busy event. Just came to the Spring Release Party and had some serious fun. For $10 you get to try like 18 different wines, and barrel taste as well. They had a live band that played for the whole time. The food was great because they had a $5 taco bar, where you can get fresh carnitas tacos with rice and beans. They also had wood fired pizza, which would go great with the Zin, but you had to order a whole pizza and wait for them to cook it. I wish we had more patience. The Zins are definitely fruit-forward, a little jamy, with the best ones coming from Amador County. I really liked the 2009 Petite Syrah, and at $24 a bottle not bad pricing, so I had to pick up a bottle of that. The naming is really confusing, not a big fan of all the 'ous' words. Then again, this is Lodi not Napa, so it is nice to come to a more relaxed low key winery. read more

I have to admit, the wine here is pretty good. Not the best Lodi has to offer, but def in the top 3rd. However, had the most uncomfortable visit here and can't imagine that I'd return. I've never felt so pressured to sign up for wine club before, but the guy pouring brought every single one of our conversations back to how we need to be wine club members because they have the most down to earth tasting room.. not very down to earth to pressure me into wine club every 2minutes of my tasting. The Maccia family is always so kind. Their estate is gorgeous and there always seems to be something happening whether it be live music or a game of horseshoe. I love the atmosphere, I just wish I was more of a Zin-lover since many of their wines are zin based. read more

The winery has an amazing outside area for folks to hang out and picnic. Lots of space and seems kid friendly. The wines were tasty too! We did buy a few bottles to take home. Now I was not impressed with the customer service. It was lacking. It was not that crowded (a tad busy but not swamped) and it felt like the staff did not know how to balance their groups. One of our favorites in Lodi. Many awarding winning wines, including fabulous Zinfandels and Barberas that have been recognized as top Barberas produced outside of Italy. Great hospitality room, friendly staff, beautiful grounds -- plus bocci ball court -- for lounging, picnics, or live music. Became a wine club member upon my first visit years ago -- the wine club & special wine club events are outstanding. Highly recommend a visit if you're in Lodi. We visited for W&C weekend. Very organized. They had an area clearly marked for wine club members and then the back patio was dedicated to the event. The grounds are lovely, wines good. Nice homey feel with friendly staff and flexible seating options. This is the place that convinced me that zinfandel is a solid option. I give the 2016 Zinfandel Victorious 5 stars. As far goes the energy with the customer service 2 stars. Walked in greeted by the gentleman that was at the counter he was helping some other customers. But he was friendly. As for when the 2 female's came out to help, the one that decided to help us she was not friendly at all with her fake smiles. As the wine tasting was going by tried to make conversation but couldn't get much from her. Just a little tip Next time if you don't want to help us or even make conversation move on to the next and don't waste your time. You didn't make us feel comfortable or welcomed. Macchia is hands down my favorite wine in all of CA, especially their Oblivious line. I remember when they first opened and since then they have been doing nothing but getting better. If you are a fan of Zinfandel wines, Macchia must be on your list of wineries to check out. Their staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines they pour. Their tasting room is intimate and cozy. I took a bottle of Oblivious to a friend of mine and he became an instant fan. If you like late harvest wines, they have a late harvest Zinfandel that is truly great. Not overly sweet, but just enough to let you know it's something special. Absolutely my favorite winery this round in Lodi! Loved the one-of-a-kind greeting by two beautiful Boxer's! The wine was so tasty, I specifically loved the "Devious" wine myself. So typical of Yelp are the mixed reviews. My wife and I visited yesterday in the middle of a heat wave that kept the crowds to a minimum. Yay for us! The last tasting (since we save the best for last) was Macchia. Hands down, in my humble opinion, the best Zinfandels around Lodi. Bought a couple to drink now, and a bottle of 2011 Serious that I paid $50.00 (a lot for me) that I will lay down for a few years. One of the major complaints that I see on this site is the tasting room experience. I have to compliment the LOVELY Vanessa and her cohort, the LIVELY Jason (tasting room mgr.) on their welcoming attitude, knowledge of their wines, and attention paid to the customers. They really made the tasting experience a fun one. I do understand how the people behind the tasting bar can make or break your tasting experience, but this was certainly a good one. read more

This was my first visit here, recommended by my friend who is a member there and had nothing but good things to say.. upon arrival I politely asked if I could pull up a chair to sit in since my heels were uncomfortable. One employee, Vanessa, was extremely rude and said "if she's too intoxicated, we can't serve her". This wasn't the issue, the fact that she would not only assume that, but say it out loud was uncalled for. I will not be returning. Friendly and fun place. Amazing wines without that snotty, stuck up Napa Valley wine culture. I have been coming to Macchia since they opened and well before they were at their current location. These people make wine that make you LOVE red wine, something I didn't think possible for some of my friends and family. To counter some people's negative reviews on here, their move toward a nearly wine club only model to me speaks to their insistence on quality and the craft nature of their winery. They don't want to be in nationwide distribution if it means losing the close knit ties to the community and the family touch that inscribes quality in every wine they make and every event they produce. They have a quality that can't be beat and are wonderful people to boot with an adorable tasting room and set up. read more

Macchia 2010 Nebbiolo aka "Vivacious" Found this wine in my February wine club package. In the glass it had clean, seductive aromatics and a dark impenetrable color. I found the wine to be richly textured, with a nice balance between oak, fruit and acidity. All followed by a pleasant finish. A very nice wine to accompany a meal or on its own. I visited Macchia over the weekend with a group of girlfriends for a bachelorette party. The staff at Macchia made us feel like we were at home and went above and beyond to make sure our bride-to-be had the best time. Julie was an absolute pleasure to be around and we couldn't have asked for a better tasting host. When we had trouble getting back into town due to lack of Ubers, they stepped up and made sure we got to our next destination. Overall, I cannot recommend Macchia enough.
