I love this place and their wine!
This small, quaint and family owned winery is located on Peltier Rd. off of Hwy 99 in Acampo, just between the towns of Lodi and Galt. There is ample parking and wheelchair access. The grounds and landscaping are warm and inviting with colorful tree-shaded paths, Japanese maples, several umbrella tables, lounge chairs, swing benches, an outdoor grill and dining area for group reservations and a regulation size bacci ball court.
Just 20 minutes from my home this Central Valley hidden gem crafts some awesome award winning Zins and other varietals. Ironically my first visit was due to a coworker who was visiting from the East Coast and tasted their wine in a small upstate NY restaurant and wanted to pick up a few bottles while in Sacramento. After my first tasting experience I was an immediate fan. There is a $5 per person tasting fee, refunded if you purchase any wine. The tasting experience consists of 9 wines starting from their one and only white wine "Ludicrous" to their award winning Old Vine Zin "Serious" and finishing off with an award winning 2014 port named "Dangerous". Their motto. "It's All Good" and branding nomenclature are pretty tongue and cheek but once you taste them you'll know why they were named as such. It also shows that they while they are extremely passionate about their craft and product they also keep an approach-ability and light hearted and friendly appeal to their brand. They don't take themselves too seriously...yet they do in the lab. The tasting room manager, Monica is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and personable and is happy to answer any questions you may have. The other gentlemen who pours is a riot with alot of energy and passion and really knows his wines. The tasting room is literally a converted home so it has the feeling of being invited into someone's home as a guest and you are greeted and treated like one. Every cool winery is not complete without a k9 greeter and Macchia has two very friendly, lovable and unobtrusive boxers who I believe are siblings. My two kids love to come with me on wine club pickup days just to say hi to the dogs!
While I don't consider myself a wine "expert" I grew up 10 minutes outside of the Napa Valley and began drinking wine in my college days while my friends were getting sloshed at the weekly kegger. So over the years I have developed a palate for fermented rotting grape juice. But my food and wine evaluation policy is simple...if it tastes good then it IS good! Macchia wines taste good! So good I joined their Quarterly Zin Only Wine Club! Monica mentioned that Total Wine & More, a US retailer carries a limited number of their wines so give them a try. If you're in the area give them a visit and I know they will not disappoint you! read more
