If you want a dining experience that is the complete opposite of tourism-centric Myrtle Beach, Luvan's is definitely your stop. The place is truly an 800-square-foot, one-room cabin, and the proprietor, Richard, is a one-man show. He's your host, waiter, busboy, and cook. And yes, Richard is getting older and moves at a slower pace--but what he does is absolutely worth the wait and definitely worth the price. Seriously, this is the place, but you have to understand what you're getting into. It's rustic, intimate, and operates at a slow Southern pace. If you're in a hurry, this probably isn't for you. If you're looking for something unique, it's perfect. Our party of six had catfish and shrimp, and both were excellent and served in generous portions. The fried green tomatoes and fried okra literally came from Richard's garden earlier that day. Everything was fresh, homemade, and delicious. The total bill for six dinners, six sodas, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, and three desserts came to $140 before tip. Try finding that at a Myrtle Beach tourist restaurant. As we were leaving, Richard told us not to tell too many people about his place. I think he was only partially joking. Luvan's is by reservation only. If you don't have a reservation, don't even bother. Richard only serves a few small groups each evening, which is probably part of what makes the experience so special. And yes, as others have noted, there's no alcohol for sale--but you can bring your own beer to enjoy with dinner. Where else does that happen? A big YES to Luvan's all around. What a cool adventure! A one man show does it all-cook, waiter, dishes, everything! The hush puppies were not bad-loved the chunks of fresh onion. They were a little dense and could've used a tad of sweetness, maybe a honey butter on the side instead of plain. They were from scratch for sure and not greasy at all! In fact, nothing we ate was greasy-quite impressive! The shrimp was delicious and the deviled crab was tasty and reminded me of childhood. I am not a fish eater and I really enjoyed the flounder. My combo platter also came with scallops and oysters, also breaded fresh as was all the seafood. I just don't eat those two things. My companion pronounced them delicious as well. The cole slaw was yummy and had a crispness to it. It was dressed with a tasty dressing and happy to report it was not swimming in it. The tartar sauce and cocktail were also made in house and were very tasty. It came with a choice of starch and we got the small new potatoes which were good just plain! We have dined here several times over the years and never had a bad experience. The owner/server/chef isn't much of a conversationalist, but he is one heck of a chef. His fried oysters are truly exceptional, large, juicy and deep fried perfectly. My wife got the senior size fried oyster dinner, and I had the large seafood platter (which I could not finish and brought home for yet another meal). He doesn't open until 4PM to allow him time to go to the fish market and return with fresh seafood. The decor is eclectic and reminiscent of an old south fish camp. Had a wonderful dinner last night - the waitress was super sweet and friendly. Between 3 of us, we had Pan Seared Scallops, Pan Seared Shrimp, and Pan Seared Flounder - each with slaw, continental potatoes, and delicious hush puppies. All three meals were delicious! The Sweet Tea was good - as was the BYOB policy since we brought a bottle of wine. We walked in on time for our 5:00 pm reservation, and we were out the door by 6:00 pm with our leftovers in tow. Three of us had dinner at Luvans last night. We each ordered a different seafood (shrimp, oysters, scallops) all were cooked perfectly. I had a side of mustard greens that the owner had grown himself and house-made peanut butter pie. Both were delicious. Our waitress was friendly, kept our glasses filled, and attentive to any need. The prices were super good for seafood. I highly recommend eating here; but make sure you have reservations. There are only two working the restaurant so they have to make sure the customer number is do-able. Great place to eat...do not let the rustic exterior scare you off. It's hard to describe Luvan's but a couple words that come to mind are delicious and unique. I guarantee when you pull up you'll first think, "Is this somebody's cabin?" Then the thought will cross your mind, "Oh gosh, I'm in Deliverance! Paddle faster I hear banjo music!" But no need to fret! In fact, if you get in your car and drive away, you're making the worst mistake and your taste buds will cry at the loss of deliciousness. If you don't notice any servers when you first walk in, just find a table and sit down, they'll get to you eventually. We showed up on a night when the cook was also the sever and cashier (I guess someone called in sick or something). He was hilarious with his dry humor and thick southern accent! Luvan's is small, hot and it took a half hour for our order to be taken and another 45 minutes before we got our food but you'll notice that even with all that I still give this place 5 stars! Sweet tea = A+. Hush puppies = A+. Seafood platter (shrimp, scallops and catfish pan fried in butter and Cajun seasoning) = oh.my.gosh A+!!! Was in town for a ball tournament and thought we would give Luvan's a try. The 4 of us arrived about 5:30, went inside and a man asked us if we had reservations. I said that we didn't because I didn't know we needed them. Never been to a fish camp that you needed reservations and being from out of town wouldn't know. I would give them 4 1/2 stars if I could just because they will not give you real butter for the baked potato even though they have butter to cook with! (Give us real butter even if you have to charge an up charge!) I had to bring my Kerrygold butter in along with my sea salt, cracked pepper and chives! But I gave them 5 stars anyway because everything else was so good! I started with the fried okra which is fresh and hand-breaded. I requested it lightly breaded and extra crispy which I got and enjoyed. I also got a small order of fried oysters ($5.50 and not on the menu) in which some were not so good texture-wise, but the flavor/texture of the others was pretty good. I also ordered the pan-fried, in butter, flounder, shrimp and scallops that came with cole slaw and the potato. I asked for the cole slaw first; it was obviously freshly made, delicious and not too sweet, like at most places. So unfortunately I had filled up on the oysters, okra and slaw before it took quite a while for the entree to arrive....but worth the wait! I had been worried that the scallops would be overcooked but they weren't. Everything was cooked perfectly with that wonderful butter flavor. The scallops were huge, juicy and sweet! Their tartar sauce is perhaps the best I've ever had because its house-made and not sweet. I also enjoyed the hush puppies which are savory with big pieces of onion in them. I wished I could have eaten more but took most of it to go and enjoyed it the following day. Luvans was a surprise stop. We were hungry and this was the last decent stop on the way for the next set of miles. It can be hard to miss since it is nested behind trees and the parking lot is gravel. The inside is homely with open boxes of decorations littering the front section. Handmade signs and other unique decor covered the walls. The sweet tea was delicious, A basket of hush puppies came before the meal. The hush puppies had onions combined on the inside. The crinkle cut fries were great and delicious. Overall, the food had a bit of oil and grease to it. But that's what made it delicious. When I say down home, you'll find it here. The building is a small log cabin type structure, Concrete floors and still has some Christmas decorations up. Don't let the super casual atmosphere fool you into thinking this is not a great food place. Food is tasty and if you leave here hungry, you weren't hungry to start.
