Valentine's Date Night @Luna's - Gainesville, GA
Cindy C.

We went to Luna's not knowing actually much about the restaurant we tried to call and see if we could make a reservation, but nobody answered the phone and nobody returned our phone call. We called a few days before so we took a chance and showed up and hoped that maybe they would have an open reservation. Bingo, lucky for us we got in, but we did go early. We went slightly before 5 o'clock. I actually picked up the restaurant because they said they had a jazz/piano bar, but unfortunately we were sat in the dining room that that was nowhere near the jazz piano bar area so we didn't get to hear it. All we got to hear was people talking in dishes clattering. The lights were pretty right so it wasn't really very romantic. It seemed more like a country club or due to the fact that mostly everyone there was older than us and were in our late 50s. It seemed more like it was even an assisted living facility. I'm not joking. That's how it felt but the food was great. The service was mediocre. it's not that they were slow, but they were in no hurry yet when we got there they got made it seem like we got lucky that somebody canceled and that we needed to hurry and get in and place our order because they had a long list of reservation reservations. The doorman I think it actually should brush up or be shown how to approach or work with patrons. At his age; maybe due to his lack of people skills; he may not be the best person for the position of greeting guests. thanks Miss me where they take reservations they're considered a higher scale of client tell or on an event where it's an occasion like this for Valentine's Day. You definitely want somebody that's greeting you with a smile and kindly letting you know that they have a spot or they don't have a spot and just basically treating you kind and being as polite as possible, regardless of what the available situation was/is. We were very thankful they had a spot, and we went with knowing it may not be available to dine there; but to be making us feel like we were lucky when we chose their restaurant to go to; in turn I felt like they were lucky that we chose their restaurant because there are other restaurants that we could've gone to. We heard some patrons complaining about the timing of food delivery and one table left after a round of cocktails. We aren't sure why they chose to leave but they did. We felt their pricing for the amount of food and offering was a bit steep and not so much in line with others especially since they didn't add any extra flair of roses for the ladies, little to none romantic ambiance and definitely no music which would have been a nice touch. We will try them again when hopefully they will have seating in the jazz bar area and we will call further in advance to plan for the visit so maybe I can update the review and let you know if a 3rd visit is in the future. We don't live close so the second visit will kind of need to be a wow to gain the 3rd one as I feel I'm am fair and my expectations aren't set super high but I definitely feel they dropped the ball for me based on this visit.

Service was five star. The owner Darryl greeted us and took the time to chat with us and tell us a little of his history. Very nice! McKenzie was knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions to pair with our meal. We had many servers and they were all attentive. The food was very good. My hubby had the ribeye and enjoyed it. I had the halibut and it was very good. Portions were a very nice size. This is a definite hidden gem in Downtown Gainesville and we will be back. Very classy place!

Nice ambiance but dated. Not sure what it wants to be. Steak, Italian, southern not sure. Had the 4 course tasting menu. The salad 1st course was small, tasting dressing. Pretty ordinary otherwise 2nd course was more like a main. Amberjack with grits and brocolli. This course was nice but the fish was over cooked. Not glistening. Grits pretty good. Brocoli was very good. Next course was the pepper filled with steak and provolone, mash potatoes. Needed salt. 4th course a turtle pie. Very good. Hubby is the French onion soup which was very good. The pork chops he ordered was over cooked. Should have been slightly pink. White and dry. Creme Brulee was good. Had a very good engaging waitress. Drinks were pricy. Not sure if I would go back. Too many restaurants to choose from nearby.

Got seated in the bar, but it ain't bad.

We had actually planned to visit another restaurant in the area; but when we arrived, they were closed, even though Yelp showed open today. Sigh. Anyway, we were lucky enough to happen across Luna. When we walked in, we learned that the restaurant was full due to reservations. Luckily, we could be seated in the bar. The Owner came and showed us to our table; later, he even came back by to check on us. You could tell that he is very customer oriented, as he stopped (and was stopped by) people as he walked through. Everyone seemed to enjoy his company. Then, the food came. As you can see by the pictures, the presentation was appetizing, and we both enjoyed our dishes. We could see why locals frequent this establishment, and I think you'll be happy when you visit, too.

Shrimp & Grits. (I think called something else.) Delicious!

Thank you, Luna's for taking such good care of our large private party last night. Our server was delightful (Travis), the music was perfection (piano lounge), and our food, of course, delicious. The wait on all things was extraordinary but I'm sure it was do to staffing. A two hour dinner turned to four. We stayed till closing and absorbed every minute with each other. Again, thank you. We'll be back!

Food is good although to me, Luna's is overpriced. Ordered the pan fried trout with spinach and grits.

They have a few TVs for viewing and had a live belly dancer briefly perform. They didn't have a DJ. It seems like they were playing music from a music playlist, which was a mix of RnB and Hip Hop. Their menu has food, drink, and hookah options. They had nothing on the menu except for Suya; so, we didn't have food. The drinks were pretty good and reasonably priced, given that they were served in plastic cups. The hookah was pretty good and lasted awhile. Of note, the bartender couldn't take cash because she didn't have enough change in the register to return; the only option was card payment.

The sign would advise they open at 5, but doors wouldn't open until nearly an hour later. They would frequently do grocery runs to Walmart then charge you the same amount for items such as wings that were clearly different and finally arrived right before they close the lounge. So you literally had to box them, then pay your bill to close..... With that said, The recent visit I made last week was MUCH better. Decor of this locale is real loungy and sleek. Nice ambiance for a Gwinnett experience...The staff is very pleasant, and the Siracha wings are amazing!!! Presentation was so simple but nice... My friend got another chicken dish, that kinda looked like a Cordon Bleu, and that was quite tasty as well. Drinks are fair, (tiny portions with ice), and the music is good. Mix of African/Reggae/HipHop. In all, I recommend this place if the consistency stays like this....but I had to be honest about my previous experiences.

Locals know it well -it's been serving the neighborhoods around Normaltown for decades-and it looks the part., Food: 5 stars for their Cincinnati-style chili on French fries , by the bowl, or with hotdogs. Sandwiches are always good size and tasty. We like their Reuben and Rachel as well as the various BLT's. Food is a strong point. Service : Staff are very pleasant and the service is quick. Facility: 2- star (Sorry-but it's true) Old interior, but they have attempted to keep it serviceable. The bathrooms are a good reason to use hand sanitizer instead of washing your hands, IMHO. Lots of various beer cans for decor. Location: Very conveniently located on main thoroughfare just outside Athens in Normaltown between the hardware store and the Mexican restaurant. A few parking spaces on the street, more in the rear.

FOOD: Ordered the mozzarella sticks & catfish entree. The mozzarella sticks were flavorful. The catfish dish came topped with arugula & had 6 hushpuppies. The catfish was fresh & the arugula made it a delicious bite. I would have liked a little bit more of arugula to have with each bite of my fish but not a deal breaker. The hushpuppies were very good. They had bits of corn & came with sauce but didn't need it at all. Overall, I enjoyed both items ordered. Drinks were ok. Mine was slightly overpowered with lime, but it was good overall. This place would pop if more people were there. I noticed there's a 15% gratuity for parties over 4 & checks over $100. This place is located in a pocket & it's not easily seen from the street. I'm willing to try this place out again.

It opened…read morenearly a year ago, just down the road from our house and haven't had the opportunity to try it until this week, but have always noticed the lines out door and the packed parking lot. Friday, we decided to go for a late lunch pick up. Let me say again... we only live about three miles from the restaurant. We arrive, it's around 3pm and the place is PACKED. It's an adorable place. Great ambiance, totally welcoming when you come in the door. They've got nice outdoor seating as well, with cornhole games and lighting. Nice touch, especially on a beautiful day. Walking in, we were greeted by the clerk at the register and informed it would be a 20 minute wait, which was fine. This having been our first time there, we both decided to order the sampler platter, which was one catfish filet, two chicken tenders, three shrimp, fries, and a hush puppy. For $16.99, it's a pretty good deal! We also ordered a side of cheese grits to try. The clerk was in the process of leaving and did so after taking our order. We waited. People came in after us and we watched them get their food before us. 15 minutes...20 minutes...30 minutes... finally about 35 minutes later, they come out with our order. We left. Drove the three miles home and opened the boxes. Everything was cold. Not Luke warm. Cold. Waiting that long doesn't bother me. But I do expect after that long, that the food be fresh. The fries had gone soggy, the batter on the fish, chicken, and shrimp were also soggy and starting to fall off. It was obvious that our food had been ready for a bit and then sat back there longer than necessary. And this is where my husband and I part ways on opinion... I do NOT generally care for catfish. Never have. I actually had asked the first clerk if I could sub that part out for flounder, but she said, no. I'm glad she did. Hands down, best catfish experience ever, even though it was cold and falling apart. Zero muddy, off taste that I normally associate with catfish. It honestly was delicious and if that's what it's like cold, then I can only imagine how good it would be fresh. I also liked the shrimp, the chicken, and the hush puppy- although I will say... I was a bit disappointed to see there was only one, it to be fair, it was gigantic. It was NOT soggy, so I don't know what happened there. Anyway, the hush puppy was crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside with bits of corn throughout. The shrimp, though I liked it, lacked a bit on seasoning and I can say the same about the chicken. That said, the chicken was juicy and tender. Not quite Gus's or Gutheries quality, but head and shoulders above Zaxby's or Huey Magoos. I could honestly take or leave the fries but that's me... I don't particularly like crinkle cuts, especially after they've gone soggy, which is why I don't like Zaxby's. My husband, however, was disappointed overall. The only thing we agreed on was that the catfish was really good, but he did point out that between the fish, chicken, and shrimp, they all had the exact same batter...the catfish just carried it better. I did love the grits and would pick that as my side over the fries. Just a matter of preference, there. Here's the thing- we do our best to support local, small businesses, pointedly ones who are veteran owned, and recognize that small businesses, in particular, are especially vulnerable to bad or off days. Based on all the reviews from people we personally know, we're positive that's exactly what happened to us on Friday. So, in light of that experience, I'm giving it 3 stars with the promise that we will try again and I will edit this review to reflect that second experience. Overall for me, I'd go back for the catfish any day and they showed me how good that one thing can be when it's done right. As for my husband and his opinion of the other items... I pointed out that it's not called Brookton SHRIMP OR CHICKEN School. Catfish is what they specialize in, and as far as I'm concerned, they nailed it.

It is a 20 mile 45 minute drive for us and honestly we would drive twice as far for it. It is that good! $45 for a bucket of catfish. That is 6 pieces of catfish (fried to perfection may I add), 2 large sides, and hush puppies. It is at least 2 meals for us (most of the time 3). That averages out to either 11.25 per person (2 meals) or 6.70 per person (3 meals). You can't eat nasty processed fast food for that price anymore so I don't understand those complaining about price. These catfish remind me of the rio-vista from long ago.
