my 98yo mother likes a certain kind of tea. We asked for and got a cup of hot water to go along with our over $65 (3 people) lunch selections. The owner felt it necessary to come and sit at our table and tell us were unethical for bringing our own tea. This not only was a rude and unnecessary way to handle this - it made her feel bad as it was her 'Tea bag". What a jerk he is, he could have told us he preferred us not do that or offered us their tea which was not done. He compared it to us asking for a fork and bringing our own food. This 25cent tea bag was worth a bad review and some very disappointed people. We won't be back and we told him he said "thank you for not coming back". Every time I spend time with my mother is precious - i hope to have another opportunity to have a pleasant lunch with her. He certainly spoiled this one. read more

Absolutely uncalled for how disrespected I was. Tried to call the restaurant and inquire about having my WEDDING catered. I called and had a hard time trying to say what I needed (yes sometimes I am not good with words). The man on the phones response was "hurry up I am busy" so I hung up. I decided to call back because it was uncalled for but I wanted to speak with the manager to try and get the catering set. Turns out I was being disrespected by the OWNER. NO business should be run like this, and after telling him what I wanted and the business I needed he then proceeded to tell me he would love to help. I of course declined. Went to lunas last night for birthday dinner. We were a party of 10.Have always been a fan but not now. The waiter service was good. Took forever to get our food even though the restaurant was not busy. When the food finally came it was not good at all. I got the special which was a filet topped with crab meat and bearinase sauce. Mine came out with the sauce on the side and no crab meat to be found. At least 5 of the ten at the table had their order messed up. My steak was very tough. My husband complained about the food and was told that the cook was sorry. They brought a free dessert to make up for the terrible meal. This meal was not cheap. Very upset with the way the restaurant is now. Not sure what has happened but we won't be back. read more

Last night (Valentine's Day), my wife and I had a nice Valentine's dinner. The three course meal, combined with wine, was just as you would expect. I do, however, have an observation and question, though which affected our experience. The hostesses, wait staff (and the owner) moved at such a fast-walking, frenetic pace throughout our time there, that it was distracting. It was the pace of Olympic speed walkers, non-stop. There was the constant fear of a major collision at some point during the evening. The subliminal message we were both left with, as opposed to 'Relax and enjoy your $200 dinner,' was, 'Hurry. so we can give the incoming party your table.' I'm certain the staff are adept at avoiding collisions; and I'm sure the restaurant had many reservations (perhaps too many) to fulfill; but our walk-away comments were not 'What a wonderful evening', but instead were, 'They couldn't get us out of there fast enough.' So my question to the owner is, 'Is that the message you want your guests to have?' read more

Went here with my parents after a long day at the ACRA regatta. At first it seemed like it was going to be a great dinner but the service was strange. It took forever to get our drinks then even longer to get food. Both lemon drops I ordered tasted completely different. The waitress asked us if we wanted bread after taking all of our plates, not sure what she expected us to put the bread on... Overall food was good, dessert wasn't worth it and the service was rough. We went as a family of 12 adults - everyone loved their food. We tried everything. Steaks, fried lobster, pork chops, chicken, fish, shrimp & grits - even the potatoes and veggies were outstanding. The crème brûlée and sea salt caramel cheesecake were the best desserts. The least favorite foods were the chocolate lava cake (not enough warm lava in the center) and one person didn't love the grits (said they were too similar to mashed potatoes). We attended a birthday celebration in the private dinning room. The wait staff were somewhat pleasant, however it took several times to request items. Food was "forgotten" or "missed". There was several times in which we would ask for something and get a response of "What is your name?" With an eye roll, and attitude. Salads came out with the meals because they were "forgotten", or from what I was told by a female waitress "it wasn't on your paper!" Yet again with attitude and an eye roll. When we finally did get our food, the orders were COMPLETELY wrong, and orders were switched with other orders. The wait staff then would yet again eye rolling and attitude. The food then was sent back to be re-fixed to which took another 25 minutes to fix. We were asked to "keep the noise down" in the private dining room. This was after we sang "Happy Birthday" to the birthday guest. Really, I am sorry, the restaurant knew it was for a birthday party and we are not allowed to sing?! Are you kidding me?! Then when it came to the bills, this was a WHOLE different ballgame game. We were charged $21 for 2 kids meals, $8.95 for 3 sweet teas, and then another $2.98 for a sprite. Our total with no dessert was over $100, and that does not include the 20% gratuity that was added by the wait staff. (Now, I understand it was a larger party, but normal added gratuity for large parties is 18%!) We asked for our bill over 3 times to which we were asked "what's your name?"With an eye roll and attitude. Not to mention that they charged another guest $1.50 to wash their plate because they have food allergies and brought their own food. Then when questioned as to what was on the bill advised they could drop it to $1. I WILL NEVER BE BACK TO THIS PLACE NOR BRING ANYONE BACK TO THIS PLACE EVER. From the start we were drawn in by the management staff making sure we were okay with our seating arrangement. The music was perfect for the ambiance! The Cesar salad was so fresh, the anchovy tasted like it just came out of the water! The lobster and jumbo shrimp risotto was moist, smooth, with a grilled buttery perfection after flavor. The clam chowder had a creamy smooth freshness that sneaks up with a fresh warm clam flavor with plenty of clams! I can't rave enough about the entire experience. We will be back! We were extremely disappointed to have paid thousand of dollars and then see Eggo waffles and scrambled eggs served at the reception. My coworker's and I dined her today for our Christmas luncheon. We thought that we were on to something when upon making a reservation we were unable to get in at the time that we requested. Upon arriving there were plenty of available tables, however. The restaurant was nicely decorated for Christmas. Our waitress was pleasant and our calamari and crab cake appetizers were prepared well, although they were not large portions. The filet medallion entrees that my coworker and I both ordered were overcooked with only 2 stalks of asparagus on my plate and 3 on hers. My other coworker's asparagus tasted like charcoal. Overall, I wasn't impressed for the price of the meal and wouldn't recommend it. read more

The butternut squash soup didn't have a lot of flavor- lamb chops too salty - seems like they marinated them in a ton of salt, lobster Mac had about 3 small pieces of lobster for $21. First off, no we were not notified that we would be served shrimp instead of LOBSTER until the food came out, over 2 hours after we ordered. Second, yes the food was comped, as you said. We booked our reservations based on location, it was very near our hotel. I looked at the other reviews and decided it would be nice to try this. The staff was warm and inviting. Corey our server had a great personality and was very knowledgeable and offered suggestions for us. I had the filet - it melting in my mouth. My husband had shrimp and scallops and they were very good. It was a great experience. I had noted in another review that the place was a little dated, and it was and the silverware was very cheap but I would NOT let that deter me from the dining experience - I would recommend it for sure! read more

I went to Luna's 5 years ago & It was delicious , one of my favorite dining places . I went again recently this month . I had lunch with my family at 1:30 pm . We all order the fried oysters . They were all delicious ! BUT ,,, The vegetables were prefrozen . My sister ,father , myself all noticed .They served hot buns & they were all prefrozen that order from a distributor . Considering this lunch cost $100- including 20% plus the waiter was over zealous & intrusive . My wife and I went here for valentines day dinner because we had received a gift certificate. The food was good yet very expensive. When we presented the gift certificate to the waiter he said they no longer accept them. We had gotten these for christmas (which is 2 months ago) and were not understanding why they were not good. The owner came out and explained that Luna's had terminated its relationship with restaurants.com. He then went on to say that there were postings on facebook and the Lunas website about restaurants.com and how they no longer accepted the gift certificates. With my cell phone I looked at the website and NOWHERE on the site did it say anything of the sort. The facebook page had a single posting in november about the termination of the relationship. The owner then said it was once on the website but it was not his fault. He offered us a glass of wine as an apology. What is even more sad about this is that there were several other customers who were having the same problem. Mr Luna has not tried to help his customers out by posting a sign at the front of the restaurant or on the menu about this problem and seems to think that a facebook posting in november covers him from any blame in this matter. He is only benefitting from this "problem". People who have the certificates go in and then are required to pay the full amount with only a glass of wine as an "apology". A glass of wine on a $100 tab is pathetic. This is sad because my family has been going to this restaurant for over 10 years. We will not be back. Be careful when dealing with this place. read more

Amazing Food!! We stopped in for lunch and everything... I mean everything was delicious!! We had the calamari, crab cakes, and fried tomatoes for appetizers. The petite steak with Mac and Cheese and the Trout with Gouda grits. For dessert, we had the creme brûlée and chocolate Devine. This place will not disappoint! We were a party of seven and everyone couldn't stop talking about how great this place was. The staff, including the owner Juan Luna, is extremely friendly and attentive. The ambience is beautiful. have eaten at Luna's many times over the course of 10 years and I have always had a good experience...only now getting around to writing a review! I will say that I've read the low rating reviews and all are related to problem resolution. I've never had an issue so I can't comment on that. However, it does concern me that others have had this experience. The food is consistently wonderful. My husband & I love steak & they have the best filet we've eaten. (Ruth Chris does not compare in any way!) It is expensive if you compare to a chain restaurant, but it is priced fair when comparing to other fine dining restaurants. I have been here for personal, business and catered events and I've had lunch & dinner. The largest party we had there was about 75 people & the food & service was just as good then as it has been when just my husband & I go. We always make reservations. One of the best fine dining restaurants in Gainesville. It's Luna's or Scotts. The others are priced the same, but you are wasting your money. Food is consistently good. The service is the best in town. The setting in quiet and intimate. The owner is almost always on premises. I havent tried the food yet, but based on the first impression they gave me it doesn't sound like a friendly place. My sweet 16 yr old son heard that I wanted to try this place, so he asked my husband if he would stop by one day on his way home from work and purchase me a $100 gift certificate with his own allowance he has been saving for Christmas. So my husband did just as he promised. Upon his arrival to Lunas he said hello, as he always makes a point to greet everyone, to whom he presumed was the owner and the front desk lady. The owner made eye contact but chose to ignore my husbands friendly gesture. The front desk lady stuck her nose in the air and replied gruffly "can I help you with something?" My husband continued with his purchase and attempted to inquire about the food and if they still had the steak that he once tried there. The apprehensive lady again replied so rudely with a no we don't have that. He asked, are you sure? She have a "ugh", and said well its not on our menu you have to request it. So you do have it then, my husband replied. He then reluctantly questioned if there was a dress code to which he receive a very nasty response of "well it sure isn't a baseball hat." Well little did she know she was so rude to one of the kindest people ever. A man who stands up so that a lady can take his seat, a man who will remove his hat at the table and still opens my car door after 16 years of marriage, a man who just so happens to be married to a nurse at the local hospital who will spread the word about how rude the people are at this place. Especially so judgemental to a guy based solely on their attire, work attire for that matter. My son had great intentions and I love him for it. But I have to ask, can I return a gift certificate? read more

Followed that up with a petit tenderloin with lobster and Gouda Mac and cheese. Amazing! No room for dessert. Service was fantastic.
