My wife and I came out to North GA BBQ & Oyster Bar and honestly... we went all in. It felt like we ordered half the menu just to try everything--and it was worth it. Let's start with the appetizers. The hush puppies are a must. They come with a hot honey glaze on top, and that combo is ridiculously good. Sweet, crispy, and just packed with flavor. The fried okra was something I've never had before. No breading--just split in half and fried as-is. Super unique and honestly really good. If you like okra, you've gotta try it this way. For sandwiches, my wife had the pig melt, which is their take on a pulled pork sandwich on Texas toast. The pork was tender, juicy, and stacked nicely, definitely a solid choice. I had the BBQuban, their BBQ twist on a Cuban sandwich, and it was excellent. Great flavor, well put together, and something a little different from the usual. The meats across the board were done right. The turkey was tender and served in big, thick slices. The brisket had a good bark and paired well with their BBQ sauce. Sides were all solid. The mac and cheese was creamy (I added a little salt and it was perfect for me), baked beans were flavorful, and the collard greens were on point. And the banana pudding... easily one of the best I've had in the North Georgia area. If you're going here, don't skip it. The space itself is fun with a bar area, and the service was great. Everyone was friendly, and the food came out fast. Parking is available right out front, but just make sure you scan the code and register your tag so you don't get ticketed. You can also park in nearby decks if you prefer. Overall, this is a strong BBQ spot in Gainesville. Great variety, solid execution, and definitely worth checking out. read more

I worked with management to plan my 80th birthday party there with 30 guests on Sat., 7/25. I made three trips there to work out the details, including a visit one week prior (7/18) to confirm. The bartender, Kayla, assured us all would be handled. Fortunately for us, a friend went by the Green Street location on 7/24 and let us know it was CLOSED! We were able to plan another party at nearby Recess, but are still are very disappointed with NGB management for not notifying us of the pending closure. If our friend hadn't alerted us, imagine the anger of 30 hungry party guests. Shame on you, North Georgia BBQ! What a shameful way to do business. read more

Went there Friday evening. They close at 9:00 on a Friday, which is a little silly but we got there about 8:20 and no issues with service and food. The inside is sparse. Small bar with a few TVs. Clean but almost too clean for a BBQ place. You'll know when you walk in. Ordered the oysters and BBQuban. Wife orders the oysters and said they were good, expensive but good. They do have a $2 oyster special one night during the week(don't remember the day). Also had the fried okra. If you like okra, you'll really like it. If you prefer the breading, which these have none, you might like it a little less. The sandwich was great. Toasted bread awesome. A little skimpy on the fries. Their mustard based sauce is good. The hot sauce is really good. The others are just ok. The waitress gave us the heads up on the kitchen closing if we wanted desert. Got the apple fried pie and banana pudding. Banana pudding was really good. Plenty of Nilla wafers. Fried pie was just ok. Would compare it to McDonald's. North Georgia Barbecue and Oyster Shop caught my attention because you don't often see oysters and barbecue on the same marquee. It's a sharp-looking place--modern, inviting, and well-branded without leaning too hard into the typical rustic barbecue aesthetic. My kids loved it, and it's the kind of spot that is comfortable for casual occasions. I started with the oysters and chicken livers. The oysters were from a good southern farm. The issue was that they weren't fully shucked, so the muscle was still attached, and quite a few had shell fragments left behind. They also needed a rinse--grit inside, dirt outside, and not being cleaned properly before being opened. These are small details, but they make a difference. The chicken livers were so good! They were lightly battered and crisp, just reminding me of the ones my grandma used to make. The barbecue pork was excellent. Sweet, but not "sticky" sweet with a good smoking balance and juicy as can be. The waitress mentioned that some of the other barbecue options on the menu are even better. If that's the case, I'll be back to try them. It's a great spot with great staff. Once they tighten up the oyster prep, this place will be dialed in. It's worth checking out. read more

I got the beans (had a red and green pepper taste) and potato salad (loaded baked potato taste) we also got the side salad (was fresh and good size) and fries ( fresh and seasoned enjoyed them a lot.) The barbecue was a bit dry for me. I would try the brisket next time. The oysters were very tastasty, and the ribs were fine. Was in Gainesville for work and smelled bbq in the air outside. Turns out to be this place so I had to go lol. I got the brisket plate with baked beans and mac and cheese. The brisket was a little too lean and this dry for my liking. Not horrible just not really juicy. The two sides were delicious. Mac and cheese was some kind of white cheese and maybe some wine sauce. Service was great but we were also the only people there since we got there early. Unfortunately didn't get to try the banana pudding because they didn't have any that day. read more

Dropped in late in the day on a Saturday for takeout at this downtown establishment & they were just pulling out racks of pork ribs from their ' smoker'. More bar than family restaurant, both tidy inside & friendly. Parking can be difficult. No diners when I arrived but bar had a few patrons. On to the food. I can only comment on the pork ribs but if they are an indication of the quality of everything else then this place should be doing alright. They do not offer baby back ribs so ordered a regular rack of pork ribs. The St. Louis ribs were fresh, tender & meaty but devoid of any bbq smokiness or exterior caramelization or bark . Fat to meat ratio was ok as fat seemed to be sufficiently rendered off but some may prefer a leaner rib. I ordered with the bbq sauce on the side & warmed them up at home. Before applying the sauce I sampled a rib & could not detect any traces of a dry rub. Sauced, the ribs were much better. The whole rack I purchased could easily feed three adults if they were served with a couple of sides. I froze half the order & will reheat on gas grill after applying sufficient dry rub. I expect that a light grilling with a baste of a smokey bbq sauce will fix these boys right up. read more

My daughter and I went here with my dad and stepmom while visiting Gainesville. They had been wanting to try this restaurant, and I'm so glad we did! William was our server, and he did a great job taking care of us. The three of them ordered pulled pork sandwiches. I ordered the fried oyster plate with mac and cheese and collard greens. I'm picky about my mac & cheese, and asked William how theirs was. He said, "It's made with real cheese," not velveeta. It was just like homemade. The greens were also good, seasoned with some pork and bacon. And the oysters were nice too, with a light crispy coating and a sauce made in house. The pulled pork sandwiches were good too. I love North GA BBQ but the last two times I've eaten there have not been the best experiences. Their ribs used to be fall off the bone tender but now they are different. Kind of tough and fatty. Totally different than they use to be. Please go back to the old ones they were much better. read more

Had this spot on my list for a while now and was finally able to try it. Honestly nothing to rave about. The inside was clean and organized. They also have a bar so that's a plus! Service was ok, ordered some oysters to start and when the kitchen staff got done chucking the oysters, they just kinda sat on the counter while the server was busy talking so that was a little frustrating. But oysters were good and the cocktail sauce was really good as well! I got the brisket platter with 2 sides, and toast. Chose Mac and cheese and Brunswick stew. Brisket was kinda cold when brought to the table. Mac and cheese was nothing special and did lack seasoning and also was kinda cold. But the Brunswick stew was amazing! On the street parking is always a little tricky in the downtown areas but we found parking a block away. I had a rib plate that came with a choice of two sides. The crinkle cut fries were excellent. I thought the slaw was just so-so. I'll try something different next time. And because the ribs were really just about perfect, there will definitely be a next time. My wife had pulled pork with Mac and cheese and baked beans. All were delicious. Good size portions and a clean environment including clean bathrooms. Our server also did a great job too. We both had the chopped pork - I had a plate and she had a sandwich minus the bun. We couldn't tell the difference in quantity except you get two sides with the plate. You could hear the kitchen chopping the pork when we ordered - always a good sign - it means the meat is not drying out under heat lamps. The Frenchfries were crinkle cut and really HOT and fresh. The Collards were OK, not really late enough in the season for Collards to have much taste. I loved the brunswick stew. There are so many different takes on stew, but this stew is close to what I grew up on, Old Hickory House in Atlanta. It could just use a little more corn. Service was VERY quick without being rushed. This is a very nice and comfortable place with a full bar. read more

The service was LONG. Though, it wasn't too crowded. We waited for quit a bit of time for them to take our order for drinks, appetizer and food. Our server was nice, but we had to remind her/them several times for different things. Again, it wasn't very crowded. So that was frustrating. In regards to the food, we had the tamale appetizer and although it was not your traditional tamale ... it was yummy and I would definitely order again. I had the brisket and it was peppered well, but pretty fatty, which I do not like. The potato salad was kind of blah. No real flavor, just thin potatoes with sour cream (is my guess). No onions, pickles or olives. Not your traditional, but would have preferred traditional in this case. The atmosphere was okay. Not crowded, but the place could use a little more personality and character. It looks fairly new, so that might just come with some time. I would recommend better trained staff, maybe wood tables to match the bar and some plants to add some warmth to what feels somewhat stark and cold. The current tables and bar do not match. I like the concrete floor ... just need to tie it all together. read more

We were wrapping up a 10 day camping trip on Lake Lanier and wanted to find a good local place to eat. A Gainesvillian cousin of mine suggested North Georgia BBQ & Oyster Shop - a surprise combo to us for a dining establishment... GREAT choice!!! We were greeted by a courteous staff and had very comfortable seating for a group of five - including some of us - with me leading the way - requiring ample space. Our server was very professional with a delightful personality. She answered each of our questions and offered a few suggestions when asked to do so. My end of the table go a couple of racks if ribs with the other end getting some pulled pork and chicken livers. The food was delicious topped off with banana pudding for dessert! We all enjoyed the evening and it was a great last supper for all of us - you should give it a try!!! read more

New place that just opened in the dining district of Gainesville. Went for Lunch and everything we ordered was incredible!! I got the pig melt which was loaded with pulled pork, with a slice of cheese on Texas toast. Had it with the Mac and Cheese which was really creamy and delicious. We all split fried okra, peanuts, and fries for the table. The peanuts were cooked with old bay which was delicious. The fried okra did not have a breading but had fried sage which added a really nice flavor. The service was super fast and the servers were super accommodating. The restaurant had a full bar which you could definitely sit at if you were just looking to get a drink. Would definitely recommend stopping at this new spot right near the square. read more

First time at the Gainesville location and it did not disappoint. First the Brunswick stew is the real deal. The kind that I grew up with! Pork sandwich was big and piled full of meat and the fries were crinkle cut and hot. My husband had the collard greens also and said they were very good. We will be back.
