Eric To, OD., FSLS is the best optometrist I've been to in a very long time. I recently switched from Stein Optometry in Burbank to Lumen because Dr. To truly cares about his patients. The entire staff is amazing--super professional, the environment is very clean, and they have a beautiful, stylish selection of glasses. Dr. To recommended computer glasses for me, which had never been suggested during the years I went to Stein. I always felt my regular glasses were too strong when working close to my computer, since I sit pretty close to the screen and my nearsighted prescription made things uncomfortable at that distance. The computer glasses have made an incredible difference. I also switched to scleral contact lenses, and they've been a total game changer. My disposable contacts just don't compare--I used to experience some blurriness with them. Dr. To explained why that happens, and the staff walked me through how to properly care for the new lenses, including how to insert and remove them. I can't imagine going back to my old contacts now. The scleral lenses are extremely comfortable, stay in place, and are custom fit to my eyes. I highly recommend Dr. To. read more

1-Star Review: Absolute Nightmare - Avoid This Place Like the Plague I went in for a routine vision check and contact lens fitting, and left questioning everything about this practice. The "contract" or service agreement they pushed was a mess of vague language. Nowhere did it clearly state product viability, warranty terms, return policies, or what happens if the lenses or solution don't work for my prescription. When I asked for specifics on longevity, compatibility, and what coverage applied if something failed, the staff just shrugged and said "it's standard." Zero transparency. I signed under pressure without any real understanding of what I was actually getting. Communication was equally terrible. I left multiple messages and emails about follow-up care for my vision--questions about lens comfort, adjustment period, and when I should come back for a recheck--and got almost no response. The few times someone did reply, it was curt, incomplete, or completely ignored the details of my request. No one followed up on the care plan they vaguely mentioned during the appointment. I had to chase them repeatedly, which is the opposite of what you want when dealing with something as important as your eyesight. The employees' skill level and hygiene practices were the worst part. During the contact lens trial, I watched staff handle lenses with minimal care for cleanliness. Tools and cases didn't look properly sanitized between patients, and the way they "shared" or reused demonstration lenses and solution bottles across multiple people was outright unhygienic. One technician casually moved from one patient's eyes to the next without changing gloves or thoroughly cleaning the equipment. It felt reckless and unsafe. If this is how they handle something that goes directly on people's eyes, I have zero confidence in their competence or basic infection-control standards. Save yourself the frustration, the unclear paperwork, the ignored messages, and the serious hygiene risks. A few years ago, my old optometrist had an insurance change, and I was forced to find a new office. I decided to try Lumen because all the reviews said this place was amazing. They are! This optometrist office has the most professional and knowledgeable staff I've ever seen. Really, from the very first interaction in the lobby--they are thorough. It turned out this office was able to catch something other offices had missed. I was quickly referred to a specialist, which helped me care for my eyes. I decided to find a new orthokeratology optometrist because there was a noticeable decline in standard of care and attention to detail at my previous one. I spoke with numerous optometrists in the SGV area and everyone wanted to charge me a full eye exam for a consultation and thousands of dollars more to enroll because of licensing requirements. Apparently each practice has its own exclusivity rights. I widened my search to Pasadena and Sierra Madre and that is how I found Dr. To. I was incredibly impressed by his deep knowledge of ortho-k (he teaches it) and the amount of cutting-edge technology he had at his office. One major drawback I experienced with ortho-k lenses was that I often needed glasses by evening because my nearsightedness would return, but I rarely wore them because they never seemed to correct my eyesight that much. It was difficult to depend on a set prescription when my nearsightedness would fluctuate daily. I learned from Dr. To that what I endured was actually a consequence of wearing ill-fitting lenses like wearing a bad pair of frames. I would never have that problem again with him because he designs his lenses customized to fit my eyes perfectly. I knew I was in good hands and decided to enroll after my first visit. It has been a few months since I switched. I have near 20/20 vision all day and have not needed to wear prescription glasses yet! read more

Explained different arteries and veins of the eye, also added nutritional advice to keep eyes healthy. Aavan, the one who assisted with my selection of frames was very patient, did not rush me, took measurements three times to verify and offered to calculate different ways to use my insurance for the best cost results. I selected a pair of SALT frames, she told me they're from Japan and reflect beauty of earth and nature. She mentioned that the color is taken from glaciers, after she mentioned it, I have to agree it really is a beautiful clear color with a subtle bluish/gray tinge. I would have said grey how boring is that! Erik, Unfortunately, you did not do much for me at you store except charge me $780.00 for a pair of prescription glasses. No follow up, no nothing. Very disappointing experience for me. I did talk to your manager about this whole incident. Went back in for an adjustment. The lady who was there did not even sit me down. Very hurried little "adjustment". I took them home and tried to wear them, but one side was lopsided. I took them to another optometrist, and he said the glasses weren't right because they were given to me without a screw on one side! So, yes, I am not very pleased with your business. read more

Outstanding performance. Well worth 5 star optometry. I would give them more stars if I could. I decided to start orthok despite the long drive from Orange County. Although their pricing is above average, the care and attentiveness is something that you would not regret by choosing this place. I had to call them off hour one time when I was traveling out of states because I lost my eye plunger and there was no way to buy an immediate replacement in the small town. Doctor got back to me, immediately, on their day off, and kindly instructed me how to remove contact lenses by hand. He definitely saved my day and my trip! I attended my first appointment w/Lumen Optometric 2 days ago. Parking wasn't the best but Lumen's care and service were WELL worth it. From the time I walked in and was asked to have a seat, I started looking at their selection of cool frames. They seem to have something for everybody, even me, and I'm very picky with eyewear. I waited about 5 minutes before they called me back for testing. I wish I remembered the tall young man's name who took me through the circuit of testing. He was very nice, patient, and had a great sense of humor. We chuckled our way through the whole testing process. Then he guided me to an exam room and said the doctor would be with me shortly. As soon as he walked out, the Dr knocked on the door. She was friendly, patient, knowledgeable, very thorough, and also had a sense of humor. She showed me huge images of my eyeballs on 2 wall monitors, explained what we were looking at, and made me feel comfortable enough to ask dumb questions-- which she answered in detail. I did not feel rushed at all. She explained what she saw and offered a few options to fit my needs as well as preferences. The Dr handed me off to Rosie to help with selecting frames. Rosie was also friendly and very patient. As indecisive as I was-- darting from frame wall to frame wall, and then circling back to the first pair I'd picked up-- Rosie was a trooper. I even had to stop and go to the restroom (which by the way, has a bidet and heated toilet seat which I'm currently shopping for at home-- but I digress). Rosie helped me select frames. At every optometry office in the past, I was told that I had to pick a thick, heavy frame to fit a thickish lens for my right eye. Not at Lumen! I bought two of the cutest, thinnest, coolest little frames that bend out of shape and back and don't even have screws, fitting both my work and personal lifestyles. I am very pleased with my selections and can't wait to gp back and pick up my glasses in a couple of weeks. My only concern with this visit was clocking my time for the 2-hour parking out front in case I needed to find a free spot to park my car. I finished just before the two hours ended. I must say that my indecisiveness in picking frames took the longest time of the entire process. Overall, my first experience with Lumen Optometric was a stellar 10/10! While Dr. To is professional, he has an affable bedside manner. Doctor appointments can be sometimes a drag -- my first optometrist was competent but had a personality of a raisin; super boring and dry. Dr. To is super easy to talk to re: a multitude of topics. I heard about a revolutionary (in my opinion) way of fixing my eyesight without having to wear glasses or contacts during the day called Ortho-K and I was so excited! I saw Dr. Hoshizaki and she talked me through the process and explained what to expect. She spent ample time with me, answering questions, testing my eyes and listening to my needs. Ortho-K is quite an interesting process, and it took some time to get it right, but Dr. Hoshizaki was so patient and continued to work on my prescription until I was happy with my results! It took 4 tries, but she was so patient throughout the months of figuring out the right contacts I needed and I'm so happy I kept at it! Ortho-K is totally worth it. It takes some getting used to, but SO much better than having to put glasses on every single time I want to see/read something for just a sec. Now I can actually read prices when I'm in the store, labels, etc. without having to dig in my purse just to wear glasses to see for 5 seconds. And it's so nice to not have reading glasses stashed all over the house. The staff is also very nice, especially Tyler, who always had a smile on his face and had a very kind and gentle personality. It was time to search for a new optometrist and Lumen Optometric looked to be the most promising choice. Safe to say I made the right choice, and I had a seamless experience for my annual eye check up + contact lens fitting exam. It was really nice to be in such an aesthetically pleasing optometry office with modern equipment. All associates at the store were incredibly helpful and more than happy to assist with any questions that I might have had. I was amazed on how much time Dr. He spent with me explaining the results of all the tests that were performed. All the staff were so helpful and knowledgeable. I've been going to the same optometrist for almost 30 years and never had a problem with making an appointment. Unfortunately I lost my glasses but they couldn't give me an appointment until a month away. I'm so happy I found Dr. He. They were able to give me an appointment right away. Because I filled out all the paperwork online when I got there they called me in right away and maybe waited 5 minutes before Dr. He came in.
