I ordered the gluten-free bagel with the celery red onion tofu cream cheese on GrubHub. It was terrible. The cream cheese was the main reason I ordered from this place, but it barely had any celery or red onion in it. I ordered it toasted but it wasn't. I am vegan but not GF, and the restaurant could not confirm that any of their other bagels were made without eggs/dairy. The bagel tasted like the processed ones you buy in a store - not what you want from a NY bagel shop! I wouldn't recommend this place at least for folks who are vegan and/or gluten-free. read more

Lived in Crown Heights past 2 years and still find myself ordering a Whitefish Scallion bagel whenever I need a good pick me up. Staff always seems friendly despite being busy. Get the BACON! It is always super crispy and delicious on the bagels. These guys fry their eggs and bacon to order so there are never any gross egg patties on your food :) they have a variety of bagel flavors, along with sandwiches and pastries. This place was delicious- first I came in and the smell of the freshly baked goods filled the store. It's a bit small but the bagels were absolutely perfect and fluffy. The Nova (#2) was delicious. They weren't cheap with the amount of salmon that they put, they filled it completely with cream cheese, capers, onions, dill and fresh yummy salmon for only 10$. This is my go to grab-n-go lunch spot, as I work in the area. The sandwiches and bagels are fantastic but I usually opt for the salad of the day! The ingredients always taste so fresh and while the salad is super light, it tends to keep me full for much of the day. My only knock on this place is the size. Do not come with a party of more than 3 and expect to have a comfortable dining experience. The space is super limited! I highly recommend Lula's for your next take out meal! read more

As a vegans visiting New York and staying in Brooklyn, my husband and I were excited to try this place out--especially after we read reviews of the vegan spreads. We thoroughly enjoyed our bagel experience, but I wanted to give fellow vegans a heads-up: the staff informed us that NONE of the house-made bagels are vegan. They all have an egg wash. Instead, we purchased the gluten-free bagels, which are also vegan. These bagels are store bought and kept in a bag in the fridge. We loved the tofu cream cheese and avocado spread! There's many bagel/coffee shops around here the reason I choose lula is they have a walk up and it's perfect to grab when you're walking your dog. Other than convenience it's always at minimum 10-15 min wait. The bagels are aggressively firm and they are a bit over priced. It's in my neighborhood and food is decent, so I stop by semi regularly for breakfast or a baguette and was used to the unsmiling, indifferent folks behind the counter. But recently they took the rudeness up a notch. I ordered two fried egg sandwiches to go, but when I got home I found they had given me egg salad instead. When I walked back, I stood at the counter, and - no exaggeration - had to say "excuse me" six times before anyone would acknowledge my existence. I'm new to the neighborhood and have been passing this place daily and finally decided to stop by yesterday. SO glad that I did! There was a decent line of people but they handled it like pros. I didn't wait long in line OR for my bagel. Also-shout out to the sweet lady working. I told her I was new and she gave me the quick run down. I didn't feel rushed or "looked down on". Ok. Now to the FOODS. I got a whole wheat everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese which was AMAZING. They gave a very nice spread of cream cheese which I appreciated compared to some places that only give you a small layer. The minimum for cards was $7 so I "had" to get a couple cookies since I didn't have cash on me. I got a few of the chocolate chip cookies and they were AMAZING too! A great place to stop by for a quick bagel, coffee, baked good, etc (on weekdays at least). This is right on my way to the Nostrand station and the service is speedy and professional. A few times I've sat down and this is also pleasant as you are surrounded by peculiar post-industrial decor (I would love to know where they found it all). Hopefully the price of avocados go down so that they can resume offering the Avocado delight. The Mediterranean bagel (hummus, peppers, sprouts, and some other things) is my other go-to. I've never gone here on weekends, purely because it gets packed around prime brunch hours. read more

Walking around my neighborhood my partner discovered this face stuffing gem of a spot. The coffee is pretty good. A little heavy on the syrups, but that was my fault the affable person behind the counter would have listened if I asked. Kind, sweet staff. I got a lox sandwich on pumpernickel. It's not that lula is doing anything Wrong, it's that there are definitely better bagels to be had. I would say that if this is convenient it is worth a stop but you can find better bagels at the near by bagel pub or elsewhere. There cold brew was decent but nothing to write home about- not quite as strong as I would prefer. Pretty middle of the road place. The better thing they serve are their panini- a lot more flavor than their bagels have. I went in on a rainy monday was not necessarily busy seeing it was rainy, after 1pm, and they had about 4 ppl working the bagel station. I finally got my number 7 sandwhich and it was horribly made, barely wrapped together, everything all messy on the outside of the paper wrapping. I barely walked 20 feet to my seat from the counter.. I guess they assumed i wouldn't notice that they thought they would get away if i wouldve taken it to go but i sat down and ate it right in front of them and they sounded like they were surpised, like they knew it was wrong but sold it to me anyway. If i wanted a very messy lunch i wouldve ordered a salad..smh.. i bet those white employees did that on purpose so i wouldnt come back seeing that its a slowly but surely gentrifying neighborhood. Also ordered a caprese sandwich, which was SO OILY, but they forgot one of my bagels! When I called to inform them they were like "Nope. Everything was in the bag." Without asking who I was, what I ordered, etc. Only after I insisted I was missing a bagel did the guy I was speaking to sigh really annoyed at ME and go "Okay. I'll call you back." And then he hung up on me. Of course he did call me back twenty minutes later to tell me that they were just going to take my bagel off of my ticket, no option for them to deliver it or any apology. When I spotted this place in the neighborhood, I was so hyped--it had berry cream cheese AND chai lattes, two things Colina Cuervo across the street was lacking (love you Colina, but I wish you had chai). That happiness was short lived. I've given this place at least four different tries, and I've repeatedly left with a bad taste in my mouth--it's so inconsistent, both in terms of service and flavor. First time, mopey looking girl working the counter with a long ponytail down her back (????? is this not a food service job or..) looked over at me with zero interest, turned back around, no greeting. Good start. I walk up to the counter and get the attention of the other slightly-less-but-still-mopey counter person, who took my order: a cold chai latte and a dulce de leche cookie. I was with a friend I hadn't seen in months, and we were chatting over by the seating areas (what, like 5 feet from the counter?), aaand it took the one who took my order *twenty minutes* to tell me my chai was on the other side of the counter, tucked away behind a display where I guess you're meant to pick up your coffee. Twenty minutes of my friend and I wondering where my drink was. They couldn't say, "Your drinks ready" instead of just plopping it over to the side, when I was sat right in front of them, waiting and thinking I'd somehow telepathically know where it was? Friend and I were in a state of wtf. Whatever. Chai was bomb so I resolved to go again. Second time, quick service, I knew where the pickup area was so no half melted ice cubes in my drink, smooth sailing, great chai. Completely different server. Nice guy, friendly. Bless him. Third time, I encountered the same pair of baristas from the first time, received same dull stares, had to get their attention, and my chai...dear god, my chai latte. It just tasted like milk. Like I spent 7.75 on a cold cup of milk and a cookie. I decided Lula was having an off day, and went again today. Today nailed the coffin. I got another chai latte, three different baristas (I felt optimistic about that) greeted me (very optimistic), my barista actually asked me my preferences(I was filled with faith at this point, I got TWO dulce cookies because I was so damn excited that Lula seemingly got their shit together)...and...and..... A cup of hot milk. Huh. I open the lid of the chai latte. Chai. Latte. As in chai concentrate with steamed milk. There was a cup of hot milk with a teabag staring at me. What? I'm not from New York, so I don't know what it's like to have great bagels that don't taste like they're from a grocery store. During my recent trip to Brooklyn, my sister took me to Lula's which was the perfect introduction the NY style bagels. We got the lox bagel with cream cheese and the avocado/fried egg bagel on an everything bagel. Both were great. I don't like too much cream cheese (and the lox one came with tons) so I think I preferred the avocado/egg version. These bagels are not cheap, coming close to $10 each. But they will sure fill you up. I would recommend coming here for locals and visitors alike for a nice breakfast/brunch. This place is pretty small and the lines can get long, but they move fairly quickly. read more

I have been in New York for too long if I get excited to find a small coffee for a dollar anywhere but a coffee cart. I am the laziest of bones so I never make my own coffee, I always buy a cup. I finally swung by Lula on the way to the park and my eyes basically popped when I saw the menu. Did I REALLY spend only $4 on a medium coffee and a bagel with cream cheese? I'm fairly confident that would be around $7 anywhere else in NYC. Yikes. As for the quality, the coffee is perfectly serviceable. Leagues better than bodega or cart coffee, but it's certainly not artisanal. My cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese was the way it should be, and my three friends enjoyed their Everything bagels with other toppings. The decor is extra super duper charming. It's decorated with artifacts from a machine shop, paired with distressed wood and tarnished chandeliers. The counters have bolts, old keys, fasteners, and other errata below a piece of glass. I absolutely love the decor, little sewing machine tables and I love that they always have citrus water available BUT! The Bagels! If I ask for it toasted it's raw inside and charred black on the outside. PLEASE fix your toaster!! This place is dope. My boyfriend lives nearby, so I've started coming here for morning coffee, which is strong and delicious. They have almond milk too, which is a HUGE plus. They're lemonade/ice tea is perfect for summer, and I've eaten both breakfast and lunch here as they're menu is pretty good for all kinds of sandwiches (also good hangover food). People have been friendly, prices are a lot cheaper than the coffee shops around my work and I like the all around vibes and aesthetics. I talked to the owner who told me that he built all of the furniture himself from pieces he found at antique shops. Lastly, this place is particularly good for people watching as there are big windows for watching the shenanigans on Nostrand Ave while you use their free wifi.
