Basically, if this place were to exist anywhere that has typical bagel shops in the vicinity, it would not survive for long. It's almost a travesty that it exists, this is the type of establishment you'd find thriving in some southern state suburb. Got a tuna/avocado sandwich for about $7 I think. Bagel was mediocre, toasted until it was burnt, and was lightly filled with thin layers of an uninspiring tuna salad and avocados. This place is amazing, honestly, I'm an addict. I go here damn near every day. The baristas are all wonderful, talented, and funny. The bagels are always delicious - I'm a sucker for the avocado delight or the dill cream cheese. As a huge coffee snob, living next door to such a wonderful coffee shop is a dream come true. The coffee here is amazing. I always drink a cold brew black, and it's awesome. Really can't say anything negative about this place; and I love that they have DOUGH on Sundays (though it certainly gets busier on Sundays as a result). Really, the employees here are killin it, and the only reason I haven't tried to get a job here is because I don't want to ruin my routine of being a customer here. As mentioned below, the place is packed to the brim on Saturday mornings (and I'm sure on Sunday as well) but that is not why I'm leaving a three-star review. The Everything bagel I got with Lox, dill, capers, tomatoes, and onions was a little dense and didn't feel like a "New York bagel" when I bit into it. I don't know if it was an off day for them, or if I just received an outlier bagel, or if the recommended method to eating these bagels is to toast them but I just wasn't impressed. My brother also mentioned to me that his bagel wasn't soft and fluffy as well. Giving this place two stars just feels wrong because the rest of my sandwich was fine as was the coffee and atmosphere of the place. Big fan of Lula Bagel - usually stop by at least once a week for a bagel with cream cheese (onion and everything are my go-tos)! It can get a little crazy on the weekends so be prepared and while the bagels come out quick, the rest of menu items may take a couple minutes. The pressed ham and cheese on a croissant is a nice treat from time to time and isn't super expensive as well as the roll-type things with eggs and other good things in them. Haven't had hot coffee - only iced as well as the hot apple cider. As other folks have said, they do have a CC minimum of 7 bucks. For sure worth stopping by if you're in the neighborhood! read more

I think Lulas has the best whitefish bagel in New York City. Fight me. Sheltsky's doesn't have half of the smokiness or texture that a Lula's whitefish bagel does. They add fresh scallions and a thinly sliced tomato. DIVINE heavenly food. If it wasn't for the heavenly flavors of their whitefish I would get their bagel and lox, which is also incredible. It seems like your basic set up, lox + cream cheese + onion + capers but they also add sprigs of fresh dill which takes the whole thing up 10 notches. Pair it with a hot strong little cup of coffee or their spearmint-lemonade and you have the perfect breakfast to enjoy outside at one of their mini tables or while people watching on a bench on eastern parkway. Sometimes I swing by and grab a sandwich or one of their pre-made salads which are also incredible. The prices are super reasonable, the food is damn good. Fuck all the other bagel shops. read more

This place just became available to me for delivery, and I've ordered bagel sandwiches there no problem. Today, my roommate and I ordered two chicken sandwiches for lunch... and only one arrived. Lula was very helpful and offered to refund the other sandwich, which it did. But then a few hours later, someone called to personally apologize for the situation and refunded the second sandwich as well. I missed the call, but he left a voicemail, and I really appreciate the effort. For a new place, I think it's great to start off on the right foot and offer great customer service, and I'll keep ordering from them. As a New Yorker I can say I've eaten an absurd amount of bagels in my lifetime. These bagels are mediocre at best. The consistency of their bagels are too hard and dense. I feel like it's one step above one of those 6 pack of bagels you find in the supermarket. These are the types of bagels best served toasted and that's a bad sign. The owner of Lula reached out to me to address and apologize for some of my earlier concerns about the spot. He was incredibly gracious and offered me a gift card to try some new bites and see if my mind changed. The customer service was much appreciated. I like that he was not aggressive but simply hoping to find new ways to improve his bagel cafe. We went on Sunday around 11:30 AM. The place was bustling. It's a thin and narrow cafe so you may have a hard time finding seating during a busy time. I ordered an iced chocolate ($4.75) and it was fantastic. Definitely a perfect guilty-pleasure drink for me. I was much more impressed with it than I was with the mocha. I will be back for the iced chocolate alone. We also ordered bagels and got them to stay. We crammed into a bench at the side of the store and chatted pretty easily (it's still not too loud even with all the commotion). The bagels are not my favorite, they lack the fluffiness of most NY bagels I've encountered but when you need a bagel, it hits the spot. I am improving my review to four stars because I'm seriously impressed by the customer service, charmed by the small cafe, thrilled by the idea of a ice chocolate but not sold on the actual bagels. I ordered a toasted sesame bagel with plain cream cheese and a medium coffee. It was $4 total. The bagel was charred black on the cut side. It wasn't burnt... my guess is the toaster really needs a cleaning and the bagel was singed with a few days worth of burnt crumbs. The coffee was ok. The guy at the register was really trying to be pleasant, but you could tell it was an effort. I'll give Lula another shot one day. This place falls somewhere in the 3-3.5 star range for me. Echoing the sentiment of others who have commented, I think this place is a nice addition to the neighborhood. The area is in a state of transition and more places, like Lula, are starting to cater to the young, 20-something, slightly hipsterish crowd (of which I am a part, for better or worse). The bagels are delicious and are among my favorite in the neighborhood, rivaling those at The Pulp and The Bean. The advantage at Lula is that they tend not to run out as early. I came here recently at around 3pm and they still had a decent selection. I love the salt bagels, which are hard to find and my friend was happily surprised to find bialys on the menu. The space is cute, lots of wood and metal and a bit artsy. There's plenty of seating so you can come with a couple of people and hang out while you eat. They take cards, but there's a $7 minimum, which seems to be new as I don't recall it being a policy the first few times I stopped by. I don't drink coffee, but I have had the iced tea, which comes with lemon and a sprig of mint in it and is so refreshing on a hot day! I also tried an iced chai, which I found pretty bland and disappointing. You can get much better ones within a few blocks. As others have mentioned, the service isn't stellar. It really depends on who is working that day. I have had a few interactions with one girl who wasn't particularly welcoming, and was also slow and once messed up my order (I asked for a salt bagel and got an everything, but I like both so I didn't mention it). But on other occasions I've been warmly greeted. If good service were more consistent I'd give this place 4 stars. read more

Just eaten here this morning. Waited over 30 minutes outside for 2 bagels with no apology from the woman who was serving us. Several people ordered after us and received their order within 5-10 minutes. The only other person who waited as long as we did was offered a free coffee and extensive apologies. When we were finally given our order it was lukewarm and the server was really rude and actually seemed annoyed with us. The food wasn't bad but the woman working at the counter is terrible - really rude, poor customer service skills and also incredibly slow. For real, the owners told DNAInfo they wanted to bring the kinds of things you can get in Midtwon to Crown Heights and actually I'd be impressed with this bagel and lox in Midtown, but there it would cost $14. Here a very good artisanal bagel with smooth rich cream cheese and very good quality lox and dill and capers and red onion all in perfect harmony is $7.95. I kinda thought they'd said $19-something when they said my total was $9-something for two bagel sandwiches.. The counters made out of old hardware drawers are adorable. Finally a good bagel shop on Nostrand! Unfortunately it's not a good coffee shop. The everything bagel toasted with cream cheese is my favorite. My significant other loves the onion bagel with avocado. Avoid the peanut butter as it is very crunchy. Sadly the coffee is not up to snuff. I ordered a cup of coffee with cream and got cream with coffee. What little coffee there was tasted pretty poorly. I'm told the green tea is meh at best. Now on to the staff. They get you your stuff quickly and they're mostly pretty polite. However there are a couple who I can't figure out why they always seem so annoyed. I come here after hopping off the bus, and they've always been consistent. Great bagels, with awesome sandwich options and a fair selection of cream cheeses. Their chai is good too (not a coffee drinker really). You have to be aware of your order though, as drinks come first and sandwiches after in their small set up. The space is small but it is very eclectic . There is a table and some chairs in the back and condiments on a small table for your pleasure including cups , lids, iced tea, with fresh lemons etc. When I walked in I wasn't sure what to expect, since there are no other local coffee shops in the area. I walked down from Medgar Evers College , my university , since the Dunkin donuts on empire closed down. I love this spot, a small coffee was $1 and I needed to add a little sugar , If the coffee isn't stressed in the machine I add no sugar, I do manual drip at home so I rarely buy outside coffee . But it wasn't the most bitter I've tasted. I didn't try any food so I cannot add anything but it is clean the staff is friendly and it had a place to sit and the bus stop is right there if you're on the run ! read more
