While visiting Brooklyn, we had breakfast from here. Ordered on the computer and then picked up and took them back to the home of relatives. Ordering was super simple and you can do it on-line. The store was just a couple of blocks walk and when we arrived, there was a crowd standing around. This isn't a go-in and sit down type of place...it's a pick-up place where you can order right there or again call or order on-line. There is nothing like NY Bagels...not sure what it is (locals say it's the water!). These bagels didn't disappoint. I had a sesame bagel with plain cream cheese, and you don't need to double the cheese because the regular portion is perfect! I also had my bagel toasted. Nostalgic colors with the name simply displayed across their over hang. This bagel is not for the faint of heart. It is thick, it is big, it is a solid bagel. A great crust accompanies the garlic, sesame, and salt sprinkled across both sides. But, the inside? Soft, fluffy. This is an authentic New york bagel experience. An institution for many, just a one morning stand me, unfortunately. The critiques? For personal preference the bacon was a bit crispy for me, but not a huge deal. Also, as pictured. The egg did overpower a bit. But, still a fantastic BEC. A spot I'd love to visit again. I kept it simple, but they do have an innovative menu testing the limits of your traditional bagel sandwich. The food is good when they get the order right. I've got a 50% ratio of it being exactly what I want. The worst part is they charge you for every little thing....like butter or mayo...and then they forget to put it on. Also, I understand that a lot of people come here, but it's always a half hour wait for your food. Obviously you have to order ahead online, but still think it's way too long of a wait for BEC (for example). Speaking of ordering ahead, don't use the Chow Now app. You get another service fee on top of all of the other charges. Using Yelp as your ordering app is the better way to go. Been here twice (first time was pretty bad but I always want to give places another try) and the second time this morning proved that Greenberg's is actually just terrible. Ordered (in person using QR code on their windows) at 9:15am. Ordered an everything bagel, lightly toasted, veggie cream cheese and a Mikes Hot Double on everything, scooped, over hard. They seemed more focused on fulfilling delivery orders and we didn't get our order until 26 minutes later. 26 minutes for 2 bagels and they were busy but not THAT busy (compared to the super busy bagel places in the city that churn out orders in a more timely fashion). On top of the super long wait, how does a bagel place not know how to toast a damn bagel? "Lightly toasted" = only half of my bagel is almost burnt while the other half is literally not toasted at all. Im assuming "Dark toast" is beyond burnt and inedible?? Much like my old burrito joint in Atwater Village, CA - Tacos Villa Corona, Greenberg's Bagel in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn has only an order window, and that's it. This eatery only has kitchen cooks, and an order taker. There was no wait staff, bus staff, or anything else going on here. They do give you a hut / shelter in which to eat your food; which is better than my CA burrito place, where you sit on the curb or open up the back of your SUV to eat your food. I was obsessed with Greenberg's after my visit! Be sure to just order from the window vs. ordering online since they are must faster at the window. I ended up getting a breakfast sandwich (BEC) on an everything bagel and it was perfectly gooey and everything melted together just the way I like it. The bagel had a nice chew/crunch from being toasted and portion sizes were no joke. I only ate half to start and was full and was able to enjoy the other portion for lunch. I loved how they also had vegan options so you can enjoy their delicious bagels if you want to try something different. There has been a shift from an emphasis on handmade, fresh bagels, where the bagel itself shines, to sandwiches where the ingredients do most of the talking. I love a BEC as much as the next gal, however I do think that should remain in the purview of delis, on a roll, which is much more capable of staying out of the way than a good bagel could ever be. I ordered a pumpernickel with cream cheese. Perfect amount of cream cheese, and the temperature was just right. Credit where it's due. And I actually quite liked the flavor of the bagel too. Unfortunately, this bagel was far from fresh. In fact it tasted like it had been made somewhere between 12 and 24 hours ago. I walk by this place everyday and it's PACKED. I mean it's at least 5-10 people waiting in line everyday which is alot compared to every other spot on the block. I tried this place twice just to make sure I was giving an honest review because the first time was not good at all and so I was confused as to why they had a line. Theses are my thoughts. I'm use to fresh scrambled eggs. If they replaced their egg with scrambled eggs and added some real cheese then I would have probably given it 5 stars because the bagel was AMAZING. I got a bagel with egg inside of it and I was a little hesitant, but it was delicious. Cooked just right and a little crispy. I've been very loyal to one particular bagel spot since moving to NYC six years ago. I hate going to the same restaurant twice, but I don't hold that sentiment when it comes to bagels, mostly because I know I'll be disappointed if I try to branch out. Because of this, it took multiple mentions of Greenberg's by a few friends before I finally decided to give it a go. What instantly won me over was not necessarily the bagels themselves, but instead that I felt genuinely excited by their menu since I am always a sucker for a place that'll try something different. From adding a hash brown to a BEC to one of their several lox options or even having your sandwich served on a kouign amann (I was also hesitant about it, but was proven very wrong - it is delicious), there's always a way to keep your order fun here. All that aside, the bagels are actually really good, too. I can't necessarily speak on lines or what the in-restaurant experience is like since I've never been to the shop myself. But, I have placed several delivery orders and always have a great experience on that end, even on weekend mornings when most bagel shops are packed and have a line around the block. Sounds like weekends can get busy there, though, so delivery is a pretty good option (especially if you're like me and would have to walk past 6 other bagel shops to get there). I wouldn't necessarily say Greenberg's has become my absolute favorite bagel in NYC, but at least as far as convenience and creativity go, it is always a win for me. read more
