Went to Elgin to get plants at Bloomers Nursery and wanted a place with chicken fried steak for my husband. Everything was fresh, from the green beans to the carrots. I ordered chicken fried chicken with queso and it was amazing. I could hear the cook pounding out a chicken breast when I ordered it. It was topped with fresh diced tomatoes and green onions and the queso was delicious. Staff was friendly and masked up. We also got lemon meringue and chocolate meringue pie to go. I will say this place has greatly improved. The servers are much more on top of things and there are usually enough to handle the crowd. The chicken and dumplings are FANTASTIC! We found this restaurant about two months ago and have been eating here at least once a week since. It does not look like much from the outside, but you will find all of the food is homemade and delicious. The service is great and the prices are amazingly low for what you get. This is just your little neighborhood cafe with excellent food. You can get a delicious home cooked meal here for less than a fast food meal! read more

This place has amazing food. My husband and I, along with another couple, stopped on our way home, googled a place in Elgin for breakfast and found this place. We all ordered something different and everyone loved their food. Between us, we ordered the all meat Omelet, scrambled eggs with chicken fried steak, eggs over easy, biscuits and gravy and pancakes, sausage and bacon. My friend was really impressed with their scrambled eggs, the biscuits (I wish I had taken a picture) are so big yet just melt in your mouth. Pancakes were thick and fluffy. My only complaint is no one told us to go to the front to pay so we waited forever to catch the waitress to be told just go to the front. Then the cashier had to figure out which ticket is ours and how to split it up. My suggestion would be to just hand the ticket to the guest and then we can go to the front to pay. First timer here-to go order of 2 entrees: grilled chicken sandwich and 3 veggie plate bc there was no entree on the menu offering what I wanted. The toasted buns surrounding the mostly decent grilled chicken patty and 2 thin slices of tomatoe was the saving grace in my meal, and reason for 2 star rather than 1 star. 3 tbsp of mayo, typical dill pickles, and what appeared like week old shredded lettuce was promptly scrapped off before I ate. Cabbage mushy-either over cooked, or reheated too much. An old jalapeno cornbread muffin was wasted. Steamed carrots were sweet, tender, and unseasoned. I ate around the pile of luke warm, drenched in white gravy, mashed potatoes. To my surprise, onion rings came with sdwch, of which I ate one. This is a hard review because the food isn't bad. The food is mostly okay and we have had better service in the past, but we are not going to be quick in going back due to today's service. The service from the older, (50 something waitress with long black hair), was so bad that it changed our attitude about the whole restaurant. My husband ordered breakfast and asked for no sauce on his eggs. This waitress said then you don't want THAT meal and, on her own decision, brought him out a couple of scrambled eggs and 2 slices of bacon. This was not even close to what he ordered. The pancake that he added to his order was so cold it would not even melt the already soft butter. I ordered migas and they were hot and tasty. I also ordered hot tea and I was brought decaf tea which was like drinking hot water. I also ordered a side of bacon which I never received. As a side note, the younger woman at the cash register didn't even have enough savvy to apologize for the waitress, only said (in a dead-pan voice), "I'll let the manager know." Unfortunately I would not recommend this restaurant unless you personally know the owner or have been there enough times for them to know you by your first name. they will prioritize other customers and skip you several times. if you bring it up to them they handout idiotic and unsympathetic excuses and try to act ignorant of the situation. So disappointed. My mom came to town to take my kids and I out for lunch. This place is usually great. I was wanted the chicken fried steak. We went in and grabbed a table. I got up, grabbed our silverware and menus and sat back down. Pretty much as soon as I sat back down the person who busses tables and gets your drink order came up grabbed our menus and took them back. We were shocked, but we laughed it off. He took our drink orders and went to get our drinks. The server came to the table and asked if we were ready to order, so we told her what happened and she brings us back a single menu and walked away. She looked irritated. We decided what all we wanted and waited. Server walked by about three times. Took another table their food, then took another tables order. We felt the server was ignoring us, so we got up, paid for our drinks, that we barely drank any of. (My son took his cup which was a to go cup) and we decided to just go somewhere else. I was eating breakfast this morning and there was a young homeless lady sitting in the restaurant. The staff fed her a ton of food and treated her like a human. As she was getting ready to go, they brought her several to-go boxes of food to keep her full throughout the day. Great staff and great food! read more

I will start out with the food. It is perfectly cooked, not overcooked, and not anywhere near raw. It was served at the ideal temperature, and the presentation was excellent. Food-wise, this is sort of a combination between classic American fare (pies, etc.) with Tex-Mex. It works out decently. Parking was easy -- plenty of street spots available... and coming from Austin, an open street spot without a "tow away" warning is something talked about in legends, but has never been seen in real life. The decor is OK -- peeling stucco, plastic covered tablecloths, but this is to be expected for a place like this. The pies are decent. This is a family restaurant with hard walls (so no acoustic dampening), combined with a radio playing a local station... so expect a very loud, constant din. Consider earplugs. Why do I give it five stars? The food is worth it, and the order was exactly what I asked for. read more

This place is trash I get it's been around for a long time but guys you're better cooking a wonderful meal at home than eating here. I've been twice the FIRST time I vowed to never go back, years later which was recently I decided to give it another go and I can tell you for certain this time that I will never waste my money there again. for starters there are three tables with guests in them all three had no more than three ppl and one of them was actually leaving as we were entering we sat ourselves and just happened to find two menus now I'm on the keto diet and the selection for that is limited I chose the 10 oz steak specifically said "WELL DONE NO PINK" the man told me it came with two sides so since all of the options are carb loaded I asked for double side salad, A SIDE SALAD he told me I'd be charged extra. why? it's included in the sides section the plate comes with two sides so I'm confused. hubs orders a burger and two sides mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese both rang up to $3 a piece, fine. We wait and, wait and, wait... now I get the food is made to order but when I wait 30 mins I expect my food to at least be right, right? wrong. let's start with my food the salad was thrown together with some lettuce and three OLD slices of cucumber and some cherry tomatoes that's it not a shred of cheese not a sliver of purple onion nothing and the steak? We are always looking for a place to enjoy breakfast and there are just not many places in Elgin to do so. We had never tried Lucy's before so thought we would. Big mistake. First, we needed coffee. We were served lukewarm coffee. We sent it back and he brought us two more cups....of lukewarm coffee. So we sent it back and asked for it to be taken off the bill. He argued with us that he had a fresh pot made. Too late buddy! You brought us cold coffee....TWICE! Now just take it off the bill. Roomie had the chicken fried steak that was tough and hard to eat. It came with eggs and toast and home fries. The toast was cold. They obviously make a big stack of it first thing in the morning them throw it on the plates as they go out. The eggs were good. The only thing that was. I ordered the fried egg sandwich which came with home fries. Everything just tasted old and stale. Gross. Even the ketchup was old. This is not a place I plan on ever visiting again. I'm sure it won't be around long, although there is not much competition anywhere. read more

Great, country diner. The ambiance was severely lacking however the service and food made up for it. We had Anastasia as our server and she was wonderfully polite, accommodating and helpful. The onion rings were fresh, beautifully battered and when Anastasia suggested trying them with their homemade ranch, they were FaBuLoUs! My son had the mushroom Monterey Jack burger and it was of large portion and well seasoned. I have the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. My food was good and well tenderized. The mashed potatoes were real, the gravy creamy and the fried okra was perfectly fried. For dessert I brought home a slice of lemon meringue pie...absolutely scrumptious! What a nice little establishment in downtown Elgin! Good southern home cooking, the fried pickles and chicken fried steak were delicious. Waitstaff were prompt and friendly, atmosphere is that of a wonderful greasy spoon diner, which was what we wanted. Price for three of us to eat chicken fried steak, have some fried pickles for appetizer, two soft drinks, plus tip was right at $50. Couldn't be beat. I have eaten at Lucy's twice now, and have been thoroughly impressed both times. The other reviews I have read don't do it any justice. Both the chopped steak and the chicken fried steak were very tasty, and all the sides I have tried have been excellent! The black eyed peas were rich, with more than a hint of bacon. The green beans tasted fresh, and had a nice blend of tomatoes and garlic mixed in. The mashed potatoes were super-creamy and buttery, and were obviously made from scratch! In short. I would not hesitate to recommend Lucy's kitchen to anyone wanting down home cooking. And from what I have seen, the Mexican dishes look just as awesome! I ordered a sweet tea, my husband had a soda. The sweet tea was very sugary for me and I like my tea sweet. I drank it, mainly because the waiter was working alone and there were a few tables. I finally finished my glass of diabetes and the waiter did not come to check on us for another 10 minutes. When he finally came to our table I told him the tea over sweetened and could he refill my cup with soda. He did, same cup, same straw and I was okay with that. I couldn't stand the thought of more tea at that point. So we finished eating, I had the cheesy pollo and it was okay. We waited for the waiter to come back to our table and then he informs us we pay at the counter, which he ran. I go to the counter to pay and he rang up three drinks because I asked for a different drink. Now this may seem petty, but the principle of it really irritated me. I spoke up and told him the only reason I asked for something else was because it was too sweet, he told me I could have asked for half and half tea, I definitely didn't want more tea after ingesting it so sweet. I said okay, we won't ever come back. No matter how good the food can be anywhere, they need to also have good service to follow it up! I do not recommend this place based on the slow service and lack of customer service skills. read more

Pretty good food. Staff have always been very nice. The grilled liver and onions and chicken fried steak are treally good. They also have homemade pies and cakes. I like the coconut custard pied and German chocolate. This is a country food place so don't be in a hurry to eat and leave. It's cooked to order. read more
