Standard BBQ spot with tasty meats and delectable sides, I would recommend Meyers to anyone visiting Elgin or driving through on their way to Austin. We really enjoyed the snappy smoked sausage, creamy corn dressing and chopped brisket chili--a sensationally greasy creation that had me questioning if I've ever had a better restaurant chili! (I have not.) Meyers has somehow managed to create a chili that is packed with flavorful and juicy brisket chunks, with no other veggies or beans added--a phenomenal feat for a dish that is one part chili, and two parts heaven. We also loved the simple addition of having a pickle and sauce bar where customers can pick as many pickled veggies as they like. The counter service was also super speedy and we especially enjoyed the homemade buttermilk pie, a delectable custardy dessert that is now our favorite pie flavor. Disappointing BBQ Experience We stopped at Meyer's BBQ after a fun morning of picking blackberries down the road and were really looking forward to lunch. Unfortunately, this was our first visit, and will also be our last. My mom ordered the chicken, my sister had the chili, and I went all in with the brisket, ribs, creamed corn, coleslaw, and buttermilk pie. The brisket was, without question, the driest brisket I've ever had. It was so dry that I had to take a drink after nearly every bite just to get it down. The ribs weren't much better, equally dry and lacking seasoning. The creamed corn had a strange texture and flavor that neither of us enjoyed, and the coleslaw was just average. In the end, all of my meal, plus half of my mom's chicken, went home for the dogs. The one bright spot was the buttermilk pie. It was surprisingly good and had just the right amount of sweetness. To be fair, the staff was very friendly, and the restaurant and bathrooms were clean. They deserve five stars for hospitality and cleanliness. Unfortunately, the food itself was closer to one star, and when you're visiting a BBQ restaurant, the food matters most. What made this even more disappointing was that we passed by the day before and saw what looked like the entire Elgin police department parked there. We figured it must be fantastic. I've been hearing about Meyer's for many years now but haven't had the chance to go. Today was the day! Went to grab takeout with the family to eat at home nearby. I got the 2 meat combo plate with chicken and garlic pork sausage. I also got the creamed corn and potato salad on the side. Everything was good. The sausage and corn were great. In hindsight I wish I had ordered chicken breast - it's a just me thing, but brown chicken meat is tasting and smelling a lot like turkey to me lately which isn't great because of a bad turkey experience. (Again just me!!) I also would have ordered double creamed corn! It was delish! I also feel like I need raw onions and pickles forever with BBQ now. New obsession. Meyer's Elgin Smokehouse BBQ opened in 1998, but the history of the Meyer family and meat processing in Elgin, TX goes back to the 1930's. My nephew and I had the chance to stop in soon after it opened at 10 am on a Friday. It has a very large dining area, fully air conditioned with different separate areas. There is a small counter selling Meyer's sausages and souvenirs. The main ordering area has the meats ready to carve once ordered. The friendly cashier told us a little about the choices, and we decided to sample. You pay upfront, and then wait a little bit while the meat is carved and sides are put into cups. We got the two meat plate for $15.75, up charging to the brisket for additional $2.50 (no choice in getting either moist or lean...they gave us lean), and having the beef garlic sausage as the other choice. Sides were mashed potatoes and pinto beans. It all came on a styrofoam plate pretty quick. There are self serve stations with huge amount of dill pickle spears, white onions, pickle slices, ketchup and cheddar cheese. Pickles and onions are a great addition to any rich and fatty meats, and these were cold and crispy. I thought the food was just OK, with my favorite being the sausage and the crisp pickles. The sausage was flavorful, coarsely ground the way I like it, and definitely have a nice snap when you break through the casing. The brisket was OK, definitely had the smoke ring and it looks beautiful as it was being carved, but pretty plain when eaten as part of the two meat plate, and a bit dry. Reminded me of what you can get at a chain like Dickey's (where the brisket is reused from previous day if necessary), but maybe a bit even lower...definitely not as good as what you can get at a chain like Rudy's. Perhaps it would be better in a sandwich, stacked a bit higher. The pinto beans was enjoyed and the mashed potatoes were very simple, just potato with no cream/milk or cheese mixed in. I read through all the post Covid reviews before coming here. Many yelpers complained about the consistency of the barbecue. There's also that comparison to Southside bbq less than a mile away on the same side of the road. Ironically, as of this writing, both establishments share a cumulative 3 1/2 star rating. I also noticed most reviewers left no pictures, there's 10 from me. The two of us got here at the height of Friday lunch hour and there were very few patrons inside and no line. I got the three meat plate and my friend got the two meat. They do not serve baby back ribs here, St. Louis style only. The first thing I noticed about the brisket was a barely discernible smoke ring and the sausage was overly greasy and flavorless. The brisket was a little on the dry side as were the ribs. The meat did not fall off the rib bone, you actually had to chew it off. They do have three choices of barbecue sauce which are pretty decent and come in handy if your brisket is not moist like mine was. The three meat plate is $20 and they charge an additional $2.50 if you want brisket. I do have to admit the four sides we had were actually pretty good. The chicken was tender and good, but not very smoky as was the pulled pork. Some other mentionables about the place, they do have a good fixens bar, but no salad bar. They do have some commercial bottled beer in the cooler and they serve bluebell ice cream. You can also get prepacked sausages to go along with their signature barbecue sauces. At one end of the building is a private room for parties up to 79 people. When it's time to cash out with your card, that tip screen will be waiting starting at 5%. I have only stopped in Elgin for Bbq once before to get the sausage which was very good back in the day. This time I got the two meat platter meal with two sides which were mashed potatoes and beans. Ordered 2 Cowabunga sandwiches (brisket and sausage) and 3 pints - pinto beans, potato salad, mashed potatoes (apparently they were out of cole slaw) ......I can't remember the last time I had a more forgettable bbq meal. I mean, REALLY! I've been to Franklin's, Interstellar, Stiles Switch, Austin Iron Works, Po-ke-jo's, County Line, Rudy's, Smokey Mo's, Green Mesquite, Black's (greasy), and more. Elgin sausage is famous, but I thought that I'd go out to Elgin for some. Meyer's situated right on 290 - blink, and you'll miss it, like I did (the Waze girl must've fallen asleep). I turned around and arrived just a couple minutes after opening, on a Sunday morning. The gal greeting me behind the counter seemed like she was happy to be there, which is always a good sign. I ordered two types of sausage with two sides (potato salad and cole slaw, of course). The sausage was so delicious that it tasted better without the excellent BBQ sauce. The sides were also really good - a large scoop of either, which was sufficient. The pickles tasted odd to me, but I am used to pickles being made differently, I suppose. Freshly-cut onions. The sausage was at center stage, though, and sold the show. Since I was the only dine-in customer (apart from a few takeout orders being picked up), almost to be expected on a Sunday morning, I can't attest to the ambiance except to say that the decor and furnishings were about what one could expect from a family-style Texas BBQ restaurant. I moved to Texas two months ago and immediately wanted to find a great barbecue place. I think I tried all the usual suspects and hands-down Meyer's has been my favorite. The very first time I came in there was a lovely young lady that greeted me immediately at the counter. Her name tag said Eve and she was very professional, compassionate, kind, patient and very helpful with suggestions. She went all over the restaurant trying to find packs of mayonnaise for me because of my weird Colorado/ southern background at college needing mayonnaise for my turkey sandwiches. Most often it seems that Miss Eve is the one that takes care of me when I come in, which is embarrassingly frequent. I went in again today for a last and final visit before I move back away from Texas and I had the pleasure of being taken care of again by Miss Eve. She was her usual sweet kind self and she is a great benefit to the restaurant. I hope they take great care of her as she takes great care of their customers. I will miss Meyer's turkey but also, seeing Eve's smiling welcoming face thank you so much for your great business and take care of Eve. You're lucky to have her. Turkey sliced thin on bread, delicious! The "Mexican" cream corn which is available at zero other BBQ locations is perfect.i did figure out to do their 1 meat plate and have the corn and plain mashed potatoes for the two sides and if you combine the corn and the mashed potatoes (throw on some softened butter) like any good girl from the south would do it just makes it even better plus it feels like you get twice as much of the deliciousness. The restaurant is always clean, the self-serve area well stocked, plenty of all the condiments cups, etc., except for the very first time that I came in and all the mayo packets were gone, but darn if Eve, she flew all over that restaurant and found some , that you could possibly need. Yes, there's creamed corn at every other barbecue restaurant, but it's not the same as Myers Mexican cream corn. They were out of the turkey one late evening when I came in and I actually was encouraged to try the chicken on the bone which I wasn't a huge fan of, as I waiver between being a vegetarian until I just can't take it anymore and then have to tear through a good steak so I did try the chicken and it just wasn't for me and the next time I went in there I shared with a team member named Sylvia that I wasn't delighted the last time I came in and tried the chicken because the turkey was sold out and she immediately remade the entire meal with the turkey. No questions asked and apologized profusely that I didn't like the chicken even though I think it was on me that I didn't like the chicken there was nothing wrong with it. It just wasn't the turkey. Ate half, asked for a partial refund, and manager scrunched his face up and said, you ate some, not getting any refund. This was after he said he would bring a dessert, nope, that didn't happen either. They must have several bad issues with this manager daily, as he didn't even think twice, instantly came out with the so sad - too bad response. I spent $24, but should have gone to a more accommodating restaurant. They must be a revenue losing location to be charging that much for a small BBQ plate. This family business has been here in Elgin for forever!! If you like barbecue, it's the place to get it. They have all the sauce, pickles, onions, and peppers on a bar to load up yourself. Finally got a chance to give this place a try today 8/20/20 for lunch. The place was Covid 19 ready and because I was there before noon really did not have any lines or crowds. The brisket was meh, the chicken was ok - just needed more salt... the sausage was delicious (especially with the golden bbq sauce option that tastes like honey mustard)...and the beans/coleslaw/potato salad were good as well. TLDR: Try the smoked sausage. You'll have no regrets! Meyer's Smokehouse has a cross-town rival in Southside Market & BBQ, but they seem to have embraced the 'Smokehouse' part of their identity a little more thoroughly than SSM&BBQ. Not to mention that they have awesomely named sandwiches (Pigzilla or Cowabunga, anyone?) I tried the three meat plate with mac n' cheese and creamed corn as sides. Both sides were okay, though they really need to up the gas on the steam table to keep things a little warmer! Brisket is supposed to be the 'crowning jewel' of Texas BBQ - see my reviews, I eat waaaay too much 'cue than I should. What I received was so-so in my book. A nice smoky flavor but a bit bland. On the other hand, the smoked quarter chicken was amazing, one of the best I've had. I'm planning on coming back to try their variation on this theme, the lime-pepper chicken, just for that. Finally, I worked my way to their standard beef sausage and gave it a bite. The skin made the perfect 'snap' just as the juice and smoky flavor detonated on my tongue in a nuclear bomb of deliciousness. Wow, this was *good*!!! I have no idea if you can create this by purchasing their sausage at home unless you have a smoker, but this sausage impressed me with the overall flavor and a nip of heat at the end.
