We stopped by earlier this week to get a quick coffee. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and a blueberry matcha. The blueberry matcha was decent. However, the iced latte was not even a "latte". The barista pulled a container from the fridge with the label "CB", poured it into a shot glass and then poured that over the cup of milk. We didn't say anything then because we wanted to give the barista and shop the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, after leaving the coffee shop, the coffee tasted poorly. It did not taste like it had any espresso. We frequent Elgin and really wanted to support a local business, however, we were let down. read more

The barista definitely has feelings about what is good and not good on the menu. Her judgement is good. You should listen to her. 3) The coffee is fine here. The room is fine here. A nice touch is Elgin Courier TV - which allows you to find out all the news about Elgin. You can learn a lot watching TV at Chemn. 4) The food menu is the Achilles Heel here. Food options are limited. Everything is well executed ... But there is not that much that I personally would really want to eat. Instant pre-packaged pho with powder? A croissant with tuna salad inside? Yeah, it is a good croissant and there is a lot of tuna salad ... But tuna salad would need to be really unusual or really good to make me want to go to a coffee shop to eat it. Having more choices on the food menu really ought to be a high priority for management. 5) Still, Chemn has its charms. We love Chemn cafe!!! I really appreciate how much creativity they put into their menu. They have delicious syrups and espresso, compared to big chain coffee stores there is no question that Chemn is the winner! I personally cannot drink caffeine but my wife is a coffee fiend so we end up here a LOT. They have decaf espresso which I really appreciate because all the lattes are so delicious and I don't wanna be left out of drinking them! The sandwiches and pastry's that they offer are also very good and I haven't been disappointed in anything I've ordered. The service is great! Quick and friendly which is perfect for a coffee shop like this! I love the ambiance and all the chemistry related decor. The selection of entertainment in the form of book and board games is great. The vibe in here is very comfy cozy and comfortable to stay a while. I've been to a couple of the events they hold here as well and have had a great time. Went by Chem Cafe today and wanted to try something new. Usually get a coffee or a lemonade. The barista recommended me the raspberry hibiscus. It was delicious and refreshing. I love what they have done to the place with the wall painting, decorating and seating. They are always welcoming from the barista to the owner. They always greet everyone with a smile and love that they get to know their clients. It's my new local coffee spot since moving to Elgin and let me tell you this spot has been open when every single other spot that sells coffee aside from Starbucks has been closed so as a local this spot is a gem! This place is a gem! I absolutely love the small town feel. The owner and her daughter were so friendly as they served me a yummy cup of coffee. I even got to choose my own cup to drink out of! (A favorite morning tradition of mine...) There is a wonderful variety of seating. I'm not one to want to work at a desk or table, so I enjoyed the comfy couch. One of the highlights was a wonderful conversation I had with Ms. Melina, the owners grandmother. I can't wait for my husband to make the chicken mole and rice she gave me the recipe for. I will start off saying, I will be back here when I'm in the area. This is a small intimate shop. They have a mini electric fireplace that was cozy on a cold and rainy Saturday. I first ordered the Elginate. It was good for the ingredients but I'm honestly not a butter pecan person so I shouldn't have tried it. As the afternoon progressed and I ordered a hot tea. She made an earl gray with milk and lavender. I'm not sure if it had a name or listed on menu but that was delicious! It actually surprised me only because I'm familiar with cold teas not hot. I order the tuna salad croissant. It was also better than I expected and completely ate the whole sandwich. Before I left I had to try a Broo beverage but I was kind of exhausted of caffeine so I went with a margarita. It comes in 16 oz cup. She made it well but not strong. A much needed addition to our little town of Elgin. Our town may be small, but their coffee is big in flavor and personality! Austin can keep its Starbucks, we have much better coffee at Chemn. Staff is always friendly and helpful. They have lots of options for different ways to get your caffeine- Chemex (one of my favorites), French press, americano, or just plain drip coffee if you like to keep it traditional. Of course you have your cappuccino, latte & excellent cold brew options too. This place is worth going out of your way if you're passing through & looking for better options than Starbucks & McDonalds! Always puts a smile on my face to walk in & see a coffee shop full of customers, especially in a small town where businesses struggle to stay afloat. I hope they're able to stick around a long time, and from the looks of it, they're on the right path! They have a great niche, with a great unique theme (chemistry). Towns people have welcomed them with open arms. You will see a couple teenagers in line, a farmer sitting at the bar drinking coffee, an artist planning their next piece of art at a table. For the second time in a row I stopped at this place to order a cappuccino and they give me a latte. The first time I thought it was a mistake and it was fine. The second time I realized they don't have cappuccinos on the coffee menu. 1. I can't rap my head around the a coffee shop not serving cappuccinos. And 2. Visited for my first time today (1/3/2020) with my hubby and my puppy. I stayed outside because puppy wasn't allowed in. My hubby made my order while I took puppy on a walk in downtown Elgin. The atmosphere is very quiet with soft jazz playing in the background. The coffee beans are ground fresh when you order. I drink tea latte. No syrup and concentrate here!! They brew the tea when you order your drink. My chai tea latte is good. It's a little weaker than I like but it's good. The lady at the counter was very nice. I actually asked before I brought my puppy in and she was very polite when she told me he could not come in. The place is very clean. I recommend it & hope to return again soon. Went back 1/4/2020 got my usual but this time the barista suggested oat milk (usually additional charge). I love it!! I finally got a chance to go in and look around. It's very nice! Clean. When preparing for my 3 hour drive to Huntsville from Austin, I knew I had to find a coffee shop when on the road. Stumbling upon Chemn Cafe and their reviews, it was instantly the stop. The atmosphere and interior design were very earthy along with their collections of knick knacks and books. The cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese was addictive along with the Matcha Latte the kind barista made. My partner had ordered a Cinnamon Spice Latte and I couldn't get enough of both when stealing sips from her drink lol. Service is easily a 10/10. The energy was welcoming and we were told about their new seasonal drinks that were coming out tomorrow. Knowing that they keep their menu updated makes me envy of the locals who get to visit often lol. I wish I lived in the area because I'd instantly make this a daily morning stop to start my days. What a hidden gem in old town Elgin. When you drive up, it may look like they are closed. They keep their hours up to date on their website and on the internet. The owner is friendly, helpful and full of information about the events in town. They have a good variety of drinks that you don't see in a small country town coffee shop such as turmeric latte and beet latte. I ordered a chai latte with turmeric and cinnamon. They make their own chai which is the unsweetened version. However they also have the premade sweeter concentrate. They have matcha lattes, local pastries, lunch menu, ramen, and good coffee! The decor is eclectic with vintage touches. It's a quaint place to read, have a meeting with a coworker, or to catch up with friends. Check it out when you're driving though or in the area. The best little coffee shop in Elgin. I discovered this coffee shop and the amazing family behind it while it was still under construction. We love the story behind the shop. The years of dreams and dedication that led to the OPEN for business sign... The coffee is roasted in Texas and many of the food options are local to Elgin. The kolaches, breakfast tacos and freeze dried treat are some of my favorites. Add staple items like muffins, fruit, cheesecake and cookies and you will certainly find something to nibble while you sip your cold brew or fresh espresso. My regular order is a steaming hot dirty chia latte while I nibble on all the freeze dried salt water taffy. 5 stars. Would highly recommend. read more

Might be great, but not only were none of the patrons or staff wearing masks, when I asked about it, the woman behind the counter pointedly informed me that she is in a restaurant & had just been eating, so she was perfectly in accordance with the local regulations. Even if it wasn't during a pandemic, I don't want to have anything from a place where the baristas eat behind the counter!!! Not only were the unmasked customers not eating (just talking & looking at computers), neither was the other barista. Zero social distancing, zero masks, 100% attitude. As I politely declined to order, the barista continued to berate me for this as I walked out. Just wow & no thank you. Lastly, I'm pretty sure the virus doesn't care what type of facility you're in.
