Being a pastrami enthusiast and a native of East LA, I've maintained that the best pastrami burger I've ever had is from 1st Street Burgers, but after trying it here at Lucky Boy, it seriously made me think hard on it. Just got in from new York and needed a bite to eat. I saw this place from my room at the westin hotel. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a small fries. The small fries are huge IMHO. The burger is well cooked with lots of lettuce and bacon. Prices are very good and the staff is friendly. This is a fast food place but has a bit of a diner feel. Love the burritos. I keep ordering the chorizo breakfast burrito without potatoes. I can barely finish half of it, but then I also end up ordering onion rings. I've got to say, the new Lucky Boy has gotten better! I'm a huge fan of the old one on Arroyo Parkway and there has been a significant difference between the quality of their breakfast burritos (and ranch!) They must have done some quality control because the most recent visit to this location left me pretty happy. We're in Pasadena, watching my brother's house, so we stopped by the old location next to Trader Joe's - It never fails to amaze me! Unfortunately, I had to share half with my girlfriend which left me unsatisfied and wanting more. Eventually we decided to order another around 4:00 the same day from the Walnut location, just out of convenience, and we were pleasantly surprised! Alright, maybe this might've been a fluke. The last three times I visited here the burritos were always disappointing and the ranch was in a tiny container! Having gone to both locations in one day, I've got to say I wouldn't have known which one it was from. This time, the tortilla was crispy and thin, the cheese and ham were hot and melted, the ranch was actually the right size, and...now, they accept CREDIT CARD! (with a minimum purchase of $10 though). No matter, we bought a burrito and a gift card for our next visit. Acceptable fast food joint without the 'chain' feel. The Patty melt on nice rye with caramelized onions was great. Spicy chicken sandwich was just OK (a little dry), but I removed 1 star because of the onion rings. They were good but they were a little dry and salt free. They REALLY needed salt. And they are one of those places that think they impress their customers with glutinous portions. The 'small' order of onion rings was served in a shoe box and was more than what 2 people could eat. I don't mind giving second chances, and sometimes they even make me change my mind. Today, I decided Lucky Boy would get it's second chance. My first experience, wasn't memorable, like many firsts! I went in on a Saturday afternoon and there wasn't much of a line. As I placed my order I realized, crap, I can't use my credit card! My meal came in at $6 or so. I ran out to my car and grabbed some cash. Paid for my chili cheese fries and a drink. As I waited for my order I was heavily involved in a few rounds of Candy Crush. I got a bit lost in the game, I glanced at my phone and noticed the time. 18 minutes had passed...really? I checked the time on the receipt, yup, 18 minutes. I waited a few more and at 21 minutes I decided to ask what happened. I asked the guy behind the counter, he asks the cook in Spanish what happened to my fries. The cook replied, he didn't get my order. 25 minutes later I get my chili cheese fries, can I get a half assed I'm sorry? Not so much. A small Styrofoam container is all I got. The fries were decent, different than Tommy's, The Hat, or Tops. They were decent, not a good value due to the size. So I thought to myself, go try something else. Alright, so today I go in for a cheese burger combo. Damn it! I forgot it's cash if under $10!! I run to my car, I only have $4. Now I have to use the ATM and get screwed by fees. For some reason it would not read my card. I asked the cashier if they could just run my card. So after upgrading my drink size, I guess in an attempt to recover the loss, I had a $9 cheese burger combo. A lot of money for a cheese burger combo. My food came out quickly, that was a plus. I get my burger and fries, the fries had a serious California tan, a little bit over cooked. I had to cover them in ketchup and I normally don't eat my fries like that. They were not salted at all, and if they were I could not tell. The burger had enough lettuce to feed an army of rabbits. The patty was paper thin and salty on some bites but not others. The dressing was runny and not thick at all. So much for second chances. I will give them a third chance though. Why?? Because I keep hearing about their breakfast burritos, that will be their final chance to redeem themselves. I will update my review based on that. If you are wondering about the decor and ambiance, frankly who cares? I gave up on monitoring that a while ago, as long as the food is amazing I can care less. Ew... I'm sure I won't be going back to the Walnut Street store (note: the hesitation to call this palce a restaurant). I only visited this place because I'm completely feed up with the overall quality of the Sodexho run cafeteria in the building where I work. I ordered a carne asada burrito, onion rings and drink to make the over-$10 dollar minimum for using a debit card. Soooo not worth what I spent. The quaility of the meat in the burrito wasn't fit for an animal and the rice and beans (they completely ignored my request for "easy" beans) were hideous. I spent most of my lunch spitting out the gross meat into a cup. A tip for the staff too: First impressions ARE EVERYTHING--a really BAD one overall. Won't be gambling a on second chance here. Bad value and quaility for your hard earned $$$$. Go somplace else for lunch. Maybe come to our cafeteria for that matter! read more

I only go here for breakfast burritos, so that's all I know of Lucky Boy. And they're really good--big, filling, good ingredients. Seriously, I'm pretty much always happy with what I get. I will be back. My only complaints are that the service is not very friendly and they have a sign warning of a minimum $10 purchase using debit or credit cards. When I order and pick up my food here, I'm always greeted with this sort of indifferent attitude from the people behind the counter. Having worked in the service industry (and yes I get that it doesn't pay a whole lot), I feel like it's a sin to give customers the feeling they don't matter. It's very clear that I'm just #86 or #72 at Lucky Boy. Also, it's now three years since I first went there, and they still have the $10 minimum order for credit card purchases warning. The Bacon Cheeseburger was BIG. But the first bite I can only taste lettuce...too much of it. So I scaped all the lettuce out and took out the tomatoe. We enjoyed every bit of the food ESPECIALLY the zucchini fries. I don't know what they put in their batter to make it perfectly brown and so crispy even after 20 minutes without it getting soggy (same goes for whatever is fried there). This location is closer to me but the one on Arroyo is better. The food is decent. Bacon or avocado is an additonal $1.60 They don't allow you to upgrade the fries in any combo to chili cheese fries or onion rings which sucks. The rat in the parking lot wasn't appetizing either. read more

Lucky Boy is one of those places that makes me want to live in Pasadena. Great places like this are few and far between. We stopped by after viewing the Rose Bowl Parade floats, and were ravenous. Lucky Boy has a menu with so many great things that it's hard to decide. Finally, my wife got a veggie burrito, my daughter a hamburger, and I got the standard (there are 3 kinds) breakfast burrito. The dining room is small, but nice for a local diner, and lots of Rose Bowl/ Pasadena memorabilia is on the walls. These people obviously love living here, and it shows. While we were waiting for our food (it was a short wait), I noticed another patron mopping up some chili with her hamburger bun. "Must be good.", I thought. Little did I know... Our food arrived and holy Hell, this stuff is huge! The regular fries are the size of other places extra large, and the large onion rings were just plain too much. The burrito was close to the size of my forearm, and the burger was old school big with fresh shredded lettuce, tomato and sauce (thousand island?) We dug in, and my daughter was unusually quiet. She was too busy eating her hamburger. She's usually kind of a pain, and there are only two other places that serve burgers she likes, but she went down on this bad boy and didn't come up for air until it was ¾ done. Obviously, she liked it a lot! Wifey could not finish more than 25% of her veggie, and I got 2/3rds done with my breakfast burrito and had to stop. I'm a pretty big guy @ 6'5" and 230#, but this burrito defeated me. And it ws good - real good. My compliments to the person who had a heavy hand on the bacon, and the bacon was cooked well to boot. The fries and rings came home with the rest of the leftovers. Wow - these guys really know how to feed people!
