My cousin and I ate at Lucia's after a concert at UC Berkeley. Maybe I haven't dined out in a while, and we did order a $50 bottle of wine (my cousin's choice), but when I saw the bill at $160 for two I was dumbfound.
If it had been a stellar meal, it would have been different. But it wasn't.
We first got some anti-pasta, which arrived with a flourish, containing various preserved pork concoctions, and a little helping of pickled onion. I liked the onion, The meats were ok, but a bit short on quantity. What really surprised us was that instead of bread there was just about four tiny very thin toasted slices of bread - about the size of half dollars. We asked for some real bread and the request was acknowledged, but it never came. At some point the waitress told us that the bread had just been put in the oven... I guess I'm not sure why a pizza place doesn't have some bread on the counter, go figure.
We asked about the specials, and I selected the sweet potato gnocchi. My cousin selected a seafood pizza. I was assured by the waitress that the gnocchi was a new addition fo the menu and it was really good. Well, it wasn't. It just took one bite to realize it completely lacked any flavor except for the slight sweetness of the sweet potato.
I asked for salt immediately, and it was rather slow in coming. When a dish of hot pepper flakes arrived for my cousin's pizza, I immediately doused the gnocchi with that as well. It was much improved by that, but still disappointing that the chef didn't seem to think a main dish required a bit more flavor than a limp noodle (not that the gnocchi pasta was limp, but it lacked any taste other than al dente).
The seafood pizza, which I tried, was a very thin crust with some cheese, shrimp, and calamari. The kitchen was out of the clams that they had initially said would be part of the mix. OK, It tasted OK to me, but one slice was enough. Nothing to write home about.
The wine was good, at least, but at $50 it had better be.
The service was friendly and adequate, but the prices and food left me rather dissatisfied.
To her credit the waitress noticed me douse the gnocchi with salt and red pepper. I explained why, and she said she'd pass it on to the chef. The only thing I can consider is that the restaurant considered the gnocchi to be more of a divertissement than a main course. In which case it should be described as a bland side instead of a special.
As for the restaurant itself... it's quite small, with tiny tables, which are not particularly clean (I have thing about wooden restaurant tables with a layer of grime on them you can scrape off with a fingernail). A simple wipe with a towel isn't enough, folks.
The good news is I didn't get sick. I haven't checked on my cousin since. LOL.
My cousin seemed satisfied with the seafood pizza. But after one bite of the gnocchi he didn't seem too interested in more. I thought the seafood pizza was ok, but for the price rather undersized with a paucity of toppings. But I guess the lite approach is considered all the rage.
Me, I'd have been OK with one of the many nearby Chinese restaurants, where one can get delicious eats for a fraction of the cost of Lucia's. Hell, I'd have eaten at Bongo Burger if it was open on a Sunday night.
Perhaps if I had tried some other pizza there I'd have been more satisfied. But I doubt I'll ever go back unless someone else foots the bill. And maybe not even then. read more
