After doing a lot of research on "places and things to try, Toronto", we decided that we had to make a detour to Lox + Schmear for a late breakfast/early lunch. The offerings are fantastic, with fresh salmon lox, a heaping helping of cream cheese, capers... you name it! I had The Fancy Fancy on an everything bagel, my husband had Lev's Bagel on a poppyseed bagel. I can't stress enough how delicious everything was, and I was thoroughly impressed with the portions. The bagels here are really good! I chose The Easy bagel and the salmon was very fresh. Same goes for the other fillings like the cream cheese and dill. I like how there's a self serve water station. They also have snacks on a shelf for sale! There's lots of seating but I think this place gets busy in the mornings since they only open Friday-Sunday from 9am-2:30pm. If you want to sit outside, there's two tables and a bench for you to sit outside and enjoy your bagel. This place is great if you enjoy lox bagels. Been wanting to try this spot for a while and saw a bagel posted on their Instagram story that I NEEDED TO HAVE! Messaged them immediately and asked which sandwich it was and made plans to go and grab it. Went early in the morning right as they opened (I am traumatized by Toronto restaurants and always try to go as close to opening as possible). Store is located by St Clair and Bathurst, the store itself is pretty spacious and friendly to the eye. Onto the bagel.... it had salmon lox, a bunch of other amazing toppings and CHIPS!! I love a crunch component in my meals so this was the perfect bagel to order. Surprisingly it wasn't too messy to eat either it somehow all stayed together. All the flavours went super well together and it was a pretty generous offering of salmon lox which i enjoyed. My favorite place for lox and cream cheese bagels in the city! The small-batch smoked fish is definitely a step above. My toddler will ONLY eat lox from here and turns his nose up when he's served lox from other locations. The pastries, Savoury tarts, etc are also really good and the smoked trout salad is seriously too tasty. It's never lasted more than a day in my fridge and I eat it with a spoon. The owner Lev is friendly and remembers your name/order. The sandwiches are on Montreal bagels, which are slightly smaller, but I actually enjoy that I can taste the fish and toppings more. OMG.... Just OMG!!! WOW. Lez and her staff are awesome. It's quite a large space, with 7 very large tables and 2 cafe tables in front, and very comfortable! I had the Fancy Fancy Crunchy on a toasted sesame bagel. OMG!! So absolutely fantastic! Just spectacular! And definitely get the "crunchy", they add dill pickle chips! Now they don't use tomatoes in the winter, because they taste like cardboard! But you don't miss them at all! And they have smoked salmon prepacks to take home too. The smoked salmon is to die for. It's done in house. That's the big difference. I dislike commercial smoked salmon; I find all you taste is a ton of smoke and nothing else. Not here! The smoked salmon is so fantastic! It benefits greatly that the bagels are from St. Urbain, one of the premier bagel stops in the St. Lawrence Market, so you know the bagel is top quality. I love smoked salmon -- hot-smoked, nova, gravlax, lox -- in all its names and forms. (Yes, I realize gravlax and lox are not actually smoked.) Lots of people seem to like it on a bagel, but my preferred serving is with my bare hands, right out of the package. Lev makes the best smoked salmon I've had in Toronto, and some of the best I've had anywhere. They also happen to make delicious pickles; split pea soup; mac n cheese; and other fun items like smoked cheddar cheese and potato or chickpea salads. Oh yes, and the sandwiches are perfectly constructed. No, they don't bake the bagels in-house, but I appreciate the singular focus on what they do great (smoked fish) and then outsourcing the rest to others who do an equally good job. Really, I learned all I needed to know the first time I ordered a sandwich here. I think it was October or November of 2019, and I asked for a bagel, lox and cream cheese with no tomatoes. I come into this place and they take cash only as well as this low rent apple pay thing that only works on tap. Coffee and a bagel over $11 ? I order my lox with no choice of cream cheese style and only one topping choice. What? I sit down, they bring it to me and it's not a big proper bagel like I was expecting but this tiny little thing like a 1950's donut. So I'm staring down at this junior bagel with one choice of cream cheese and one topping and their tap thing and thinking "What are these clowns doing?" I take a bite of the bagel. Holy shit. This is the real deal. The salmon is unusually high quality. Most places there's that sort of chewy sinewy kind of thing going on. This was fresh, buttery, tasty with a smooth texture. Amazing. The cream cheese is even better. I don't know if it was super hyper super food organic and/or higher fat content but compared to other cream cheeses it was like margarine vs butter. Absolutely smooth and rich. Just fantastic. An absolutely incredible tasting lox sandwich. I enjoy my food and I'd rate this up there as a top food experience. I would have to say it's the best lox bagel ever had. Absolutely outstanding. The coffee is unusually high quality as well. I always drink mine black so you really get all the flavors and this was a fantastic roast with just the right balance between sour and bitter and some dark fruit thing going on. They only accept cash, and come early, as of 10am, there was a line out the door. I hail from Montreal, and the bagels are of a high standard here. Not your typical bread with a hole in the middle. I would say great Lox but I wouldn't know as to try different kinds requires you buy nearly $10 bagels every time, rather than letting you try a simple slice of their different kinds like most places that have Lox. The bagel was overpriced and overfilled with vegetables and barely a touch of salmon in it. I felt I tasted more sprouts and pickles than salmon or cream cheese. To get an extra slice of salmon cost $3.50. Coffee is nearly $4.00. To be very honest, I've had several better smoked salmon bagels almost anywhere I've been that serves them. Having lived in Montreal for a few years, I have had the opportunity to have some really good bagels. As such, I've become a bit picky about my bagels. My boyfriend calls me a bagel snob, but I'm really not... I just like my bagels a certain way. We came here on a Saturday around noon. As we were driving by, it was packed with families and strollers. By the time we parked and walked in, there were just a few people left. We shared The Fancy Fancy and The Tuna. The bagels were lightly sweet and nice and crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside - just how they should be. The veggies were nice and crisp and the lox delightfully cured. I recently tried their breakfast plate: two eggs how you like it (i got them scrambled), lox, capers, sliced tomato, red onion, a bagel of your choosing with butter or for an extra dollar you can pick a schmear (i recommend paying that extra dollar). I also got a cup of coffee and it all came to $15. Everything tasted delicious together and I was quite full at the end, good value imo. The bagels do hold them back---although it's a perfectly respectable Montreal-style bagel with the right smokiness, they have to toast them, which just isn't right when the lox is so fresh. But they do hand-slice the lox that they smoke themselves, and it has the right sort of mild and fresh flavor; even if it's no Zabar's, it's still good stuff. read more

What a place on the west side of St Clair, the Oakwood area. This was my first time and as a vegan this place has the all the fixings. Also they provide a gluten bagel option too!! Now down to the sandwich, they use a cashew based cream cheese with veggies that are both fresh and cut to perfection. Thinly sliced onions, cucumbers, and a bushel of sprouts and fresh dill. I was told the Lox is out of this world and they smoke it all themselves. This place is perfect for lunch or a quick snack. I love this spot for so many reasons. The sandwiches are stand out - consistently delicious. Every person in the place has a giant smile on their face as they take a bike of their OG or Fancy Fancy. The ingredients are such good quality and the price is right. If you're lucky, you'll come in on a day when the smoker is going, and the whole place is so cozy and fragrant that you'll never want to leave. The staff and owner make the spot feel like community living room where everyone is welcome. The pickled red onions are divine and the fresh dill is a great touch. When the tuna bagel is on special I highly reccomend stepping back from the salmon to try it out. It is UNREAL. You have never had tuna salad this good. And with all the toppings, on a warm bagel........... seriously, some magic is happening behind that counter and I don't know what it is, but I don't need to know either. The only reason why it's not 5 stars is because of the prices. I wish they'd introduce a popular bagel with a popular price that won't take away from the costs of running the place, which I'm sure are high for such ventures.
