Excellent food and very welcoming staff. My husband and I shared the grit cakes (with and egg) and big boy burrito. Both were loaded with flavor. If you aren't a vegetarian, adding an egg to the grit cake is a good call. I was pleased to see pico de gallo in the burrito and lots of lettuce and tomato on top of the grit cakes. They also have a jalapeño Bloody Mary that looked intriguing. For me, coffee makes or breaks a place and theirs was really good. I also liked the randomness of their coffee mugs. When you walk in it can be a little bit confusing but basically, you can go in either door, then you find the counter in the back to order, then coffee/tea/water are self-serve, then find a table to wait for your food. This place is very unique. It's an old house converted to a restaurant. It's like walking into a friend's house to eat. The inside is showing it's age but they maintain it as well as designed it to work well with the setting. They have about 25 seats inside and a few more outside. There's an upstairs but I don't know what's up there. When you first walk in go to the back and order at the counter before sitting. Their menu has a pretty good mix. I only wish they had an omelette option, but the offerings were still substantial. We got the veggie delight (basically a fancy bagel breakfast sandwich, $7). It's very good. The french toast is pretty good. It's thick and comes with 2 bacon strips ($8). The biscuits and gravy are very good ($5.50). You can add 2 eggs for $1.50. Their workers are friendly and helpful. What an amazing find in this wonderful town. Their quesadillas were probably the best I have had just a solid different take on the original and the sauces that come with it are to die for. Also had their version of the cheese steak and it was great too. They do a few things and they do it well. Also the $2 PBR helps with the food. We weren't sure if the house was the restaurant so I called and the young man was so nice. "It doesn't look much like a restaurant " It's a cool old house. Great place for breakfast/brunch. Grits cakes topped with eggs, quesidelas with eggs, very light pancakes with vanilla bean syrup, good biscuits and gravy are all offerings on the menu. Though all restaurants are using lots of packaging and one-use plastics and paper, Louise's also serves its dishes for on-site consumption in a plastic take-out container and plastic utensils. Too much plastic; and I just dont like eating out of plastic. Other restaurants are using real plates and metal utensils. I encourage Louise's to do this also. Located in a quaint little house. It looks family run to a certain extent. Hats off to the mother running the register and swaddling a baby simultaneously. When we went the line stretched from the kitchen out the front door. But boy was it worth the wait! Food was delicious!! Service was very quick after the initial wait in line. Also I just have to comment that these were probably some of the nicest people I've ever encountered in food service. Despite having to continuously navigate the crowded atmosphere, all the servers were extremely polite and smiled and made jokes with us as we waited in line. I could hardly think of anything we didn't like about this place. I would have liked to have sat outside but it was just too chilly, and the only other thing I could say is I wish the coffee was stronger but then we like it seriously strong. The dining room was cozy, warm, and cheerful with local art on the walls. I love the mismatched furniture and dishes (makes me feel right at home!). The restored old home is just lovely... what a treasure. The staff was nothing but friendly and attentive. I had the grit cakes - delicious and beautifully presented. Hubby had the veggie quesadilla with an extra scrambled egg. There were about a dozen things I'd like to try, and if we ever visit Black Mountain again you can bet we'll be back and get on that. read more

Find a table in any of the rooms or on the wrap around porch, to wait for your food. They provide a playing card as your table marker. Local artwork on the walls. Vegan offerings, an eclectic southern menu. My guy had the classic, two eggs, meat, toast, grits. I had biscuits (2) and sausage gravy, so heavily peppered that it was speckled, but it was amazing. Side of sausage was also delish. Locally made, wasn't too salty, had mild seasoning. Cold beverages are served in canning jars. During our meal the crowd ebbed and flowed, so don't be daunted if there is line when you arrive. The dining areas are laid out in rooms so it takes some maneuvering around, like being at Grandma's house! The staff comes around to take dishes, offer condiments, refills, just like a full service place. The tip jar is at the counter/register. read more

Second time visiting Black Mountain this year and we were happy to recommend Louise's Kitchen to our other family members. We had breakfast 2x during this trip and both times were fantastic. The big difference between our trip during the winter and this go-around was the line! On Sunday morning we were lucky to only have 15-20 people in front of us as the line was out the door. We found seating for the 7 of us (including a toddler) without a problem and honestly the food is totally worth the wait. In fact, after you place your order the wait-time is average to above-average for breakfast. We returned on a Thursday and were able to walk right up to the counter and order- however by the time we left there was a decent line, so it's somewhat sporadic. Coffee and brewed tea are both delicious. The big boy burrito, pancakes (maple syrup is available but try the vanilla-bean syrup), vegetable quesadilla are all highly recommended. Although you order and pay immediately at the counter and there are some scattered "self-serve" busing stations around, employees are very attentive and offer beverage refills, plate clearing and perform quality checks to the same degree as a full-service restaurant. So great we went back for seconds! This gem of a breakfast/brunch restaurant is located in an old house in downtown Black Mountain, NC. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Our first morning we had fresh blueberry waffles with homemade vanilla bean cream sauce (omg) and the Big Boy Burrito. Both were fantastic and made us come back for more the next morning. Next day we had french toast (whole wheat sour dough I believe - amazing) and the classic, with eggs, toast and bacon. Have you guys changed management? This is the second time my family has been here in the past month where it has taken 45 minutes to get our food for a family of 3. My husband and I wanted to try a local breakfast/brunch place on our honeymoon. Our experience was so wonderful, we went back again the next day! The first day, I ordered the pancakes with their homemade vanilla bean syrup. They were so light and fluffy and came in a generous portion of 4 topped with strawberries and with a side of bacon or sausage. The syrup sealed the deal. My husband ordered the biscuits with sausage gravy and an egg on the side. He talked about it all day long! The next morning, I ordered the French toast, once again, so light and fluffy! My husband ordered the big boy burrito which he said was the best breakfast burrito he's ever had! The best part of all is the atmosphere. Sit on the front porch and eat off your grandma's antique plates. Drink your sweet tea out of a mason jar. Have the sweet girl from the counter refill your coffee. I stopped in with a crew of four for a Wednesday lunch. The crowds of people inside and out let us know we were in the right spot. I had been staying in town for a conference and hadn't seen that many people in one place in days. The restaurant is set up in a renovated home with some t-shorts and whatnot for sale in the front and the restaurant is a counter service in the back. We walked in to the right (in spite of a sign saying to go to the left) and placed are orders. My one friend tried to order off the menu (why must people do that?) and she was the only one disappointed with her meal. I had a Ruben sandwich that got the spot although the best part was undoubtedly the potato salad. The salad was a pink or orange color from the seasoning and red potatoes and tasted better than any I have ever had before. I'm kind of angry that none will ever compare since I live so far from this fun spot. There are sodas for sale and water and mason jars available to everyone. I would recommend sitting outside or bringing a jacket- the air conditioning had us shaking! All in all it was a cute stop, quick service, and delicious food all at a reasonable price ($10 a person). read more

My only complaint is that they are not open all day. The food is amazing and the people are friendly. We have been there multiple times now and each time we are happy. When you go in you order at the counter and get a card then pick out your table. Pretty simple set up. But it does get crowded so be prepared to make new friends in line. Maybe discuss what you are going to order . My boyfriend is a fan of the veggie quesadilla with scrambled eggs. It has veggies, black bean and corn salsa and scrambled eggs in a red pepper tortilla. It is so good he has gotten it every time and just tried some of what I got. He ask really likes the sweet tea, it has a good balance of sweetness and not overbrewed. His sister got the Ruben sandwich. She said it was great, it only needed a little more dressing. She easily got a side of dressing and the sand which was perfect. I have tried the blueberry waffle, pancakes, French toast, two eggs breakfast (over medium) and the coffee. I have yet to be disappointed. The waffle has blueberries in and on it, the pancake was a little smaller than I expected but very tasty, the French toast was thick and full of flavor, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the coffee hit the spot. The people are friendly and knowledgeable. We asked lots of questions about the food and everything was answered. The food is bought local when available and it is all very fresh. I also want to mention that we eat mostly ova lacto vegetarian. It is not 100% of what we eat, but we general try to stay away from animal meat products. We save them for something that we truly enjoy and eat in small amounts (like the sausage gravy and I can't seem to find a way to give up bacon). So the restaurants that we like tend to have good options in this area. Update: this I am hoping was a one off bad day for someone. This is long because i want to explain the whole encounter. My boyfriend and I came in today and ordered three meals (we were very hungry). The veggie quesadilla, two egg breakfast and a waffle, with a side of grits. Table selection can be limited because of the small size of the two rooms to sit in, we are not small people so we selected a nice 4 top off to the side. There were other larger and smaller options, plenty of tables available but some were crowded in by the other tables of people who were spreading out, and we did not really want to sit in the middle of the room. The table still had plates on it (most of them did) so I started to move them to one of the other empty tables when someone came out to clear and clean it. As she cleaned the table off she asked if we would be meeting other people. We said no and she said they like to reserve their larger tables for larger parties. I said we understand, but there are at least two other large tables available other than this one, including the one i was standing next to. She said she knew that but they had a policy to save the larger tables for larger parties because it can get busy. I looked around and saw 4 table options in the room, a corner two seater filled with plates and crowded in next to two people with a baby who kept leaning back. A small two seater that looked like it would barely fit two cups of coffee, let alone three meals. And two tables of 4. I said I understood the policy and waited for her to finish cleaning the table. She said the policy again and that she wanted us to find a smaller table. I said she order three meals and would need the room for the extra plates. She then left and we sat at the table. One side note is that the tables previously mentioned remained empty up until we went to leave. Right before we got up a couple came and sat at the other 4 top without issue. We have each time we have been here (which is now so often the other woman recognized us when we walked up) sat at 4 top tables without issue. I think it was an unnecessary and unfortunate interaction that left me feeling like I was not welcome at a restaurant that I have purposefully become a regular at. I try not to let the negativity of other people affect my day, but it is difficult when you come with a high expectation of friendliness and small town charm and are met with someone looking to exert authority where they can for what appears to be no reason. The food was still good, but more difficult to enjoy. It is hard for me to give 5 stars to any restaurant, I thought they had earned. But literally the day after I post how wonderful everyone there is, someone takes their off day out on me. Still would go back, but will wait a while. Worth it for the fresh awesome food and majority of the service. My boyfriend said the grits were amazing. read more
