The joys of being a flexetarian (I don't get meat 99% of the time). I can vouch for the ribs. I got the rib plate with a half rack and two sides (beans and coleslaw) and immediately craved more. The ribs were perfect, tender and the sauce was so good. I have been here several times over the last 6 years. I know people I have gone with have liked what they got. The meats are a little dry, I think it is meant for you to add sauce. They do keep 5 different sauces at the tables (regular, hot, mustard, white, and vinegar). I personally am not a fan of any of them. I like the sauce on the ribs and I think to use the beans at sauce. The style is to order at the counter and they call your name to come get your tray. They are very friendly and easy to interact with. With a limited number of inside tables, sometimes you do have to clear one to use it. I don't count that against the service because you are supposed to clear your table before you leave. I think that is pretty standard at BBQ places I have been do in the past. read more

The meat unfortunately would have been kind of bland without the sauces (mustard and classic red respectively), but even with them, they were kind of dry. The potato salad was cold, but had good flavor. The beans were the best part of the tray, as they tasted like sweet BBQ sauce. On a roadtrip and getting hungry, we spotted a sign for Phil's off the interstate and decided to give it a try. First impressions are good, with ample outdoor and indoor seating options, and cute decor. Staff are friendly and greeted us as soon as we arrived. I've got to say I'm very impressed with the speed of the kitchen. The people in the kitchen were actively listening as we placed our order and were starting things before they even got rung up. They had our entire order plated and ready before we could even get our drinks! This happened with other people i saw ordering too. Very efficient. Food items we got included the loaded baked potato with pulled pork (very good!), sliced brisket sandwich (pretty good), and the two meat plate with chopped brisket and chopped chicken. The chopped meats came out pretty dry but I think the idea is to sauce them yourselves with the many options on the table. They did, however, have a good smoked flavor. I wasn't a fan of how finely chopped the brisket was, because the very small texture and dry profile combined to make it hard to swallow without adding a bunch of sauce. As sides go: the macaroni and cheese was decent, but nothing special. The hush puppies tasted good but were overcooked (I suspect they had been sitting under a warmer since we arrived at an off-peak time). I think they'd be better during a busy time. The baked beans were a real surprise (I'm not a big fan of beans normally) with a great sweet flavor and generous amounts of meat mixed in. This is my new favorite barbecue place! I got the sliced brisket with collards and coleslaw while my husband got chopped pork with French fries and collards. Everything tasted amazing. I especially loved my brisket and the collards. After the food tasting so good our next favorite thing was having so many sauces right on the table! For the bbq sauces there was Vinegar, hot, white, classic red, and mustard. There was also two types of Texas Pete. I love the kind with the little whole pickled hot peppers inside. This spot popped up right when we got off the highway for Black Mountain. I love the ambiance, and the patio was great in perfect weather. We decided to split a few items - the brisket was so tender and flavorful, the fried okra is always a hit, and the hushpuppies were also delicious. Honestly can't go wrong with anything. Phil's is known for its North Carolina vinegar-based barbecue sauce, and it is nothing short of incredible. Tangy, sharp, and packed with flavor, it's the perfect match for their pulled pork. They also offer a great variety of sauces if you prefer something different. You can choose Alabama white sauce, a mustard-based sauce, or a traditional tomato-based sauce in both mild and hot versions. The meats are exactly what you want--pulled pork, ribs, chicken, brisket--all juicy and smoky with the right amount of bark. But here's the real shocker. The best thing on the menu might just be the green beans. I'm serious. They are the best I've ever had. We had a taste for BBQ and spotted a sign for Phil's Bar-B-Que Pit, so we stopped in. There at the counter underneath a ceiling covered with hats was Nevaeh, she was very pleasant and welcoming. Nevaeh made some great suggestions and we ordered BBQ ribs, chopped BBQ brisket, baked beans, greens, fried okra and house chips which are supposed to be dipped in ranch dressing unfortunately we didn't get the ranch, but nevertheless the chips were delicious. The classic sauce was the right combination for the chopped barbecue and the ribs and they were both was very tasty. All in all, the restaurant was clean, the food was good, and the service was good and our food came fast, so I would definitely return to Phil's for another delicious plate. read more

This is a little hard to rate. Ordered a BBQ sandwich with fries. The BBQ had a good flavor, but was so dry it required a-ton of sauce to eat it. I had both the vinegar and red sauce and they were both good. Fries were also good. The cole slaw was tiny for the amount of meat but had a good flavor. Would I eat here again, yes. Was it above average no, but sauce made up for the dry BbQ. Might have been a bad day. Too many good reviews to not give them another shot. read more

The sliced brisket is excellent. Very good flavor without bbq sauce and very tinder. The reason for the 4 star is the chopped brisket. It is so finely chopped there is no flavor and consistency is like saw dust. It just fell out of the bun. I'm from Texas and had Brisket all over Texas and other states. The chopped brisket should be chucks or small bite size so that the flavor stands out. the potato salad was very good as well as the French fries. I had fried okra and it was good. While visiting the area on our anniversary, there were several recommendations to make sure we didn't miss Phil's bbq. I wish we would've not listened as there are so many other great barbecue places in this area. We arrived at 5:00 on a Thursday evening and were told no sliced brisket and they have not had any since Sunday. That being said, they still had chopped brisket, so I ordered that and my husband ordered the ribs even though his heart was set on the brisket. The ribs were good no complaints. The brisket was dry and not much flavor. Since this place is closed from Sunday night to Thursday evening, it made me question, if you don't have any sliced brisket, does that mean the chopped brisket I'm eating is left over from the previous Sunday? Four day old brisket would explain why it was dry and flavorless. There could be no other explanation as if they had smoked a fresh one that day there would obviously have been sliced brisket available. The potato salad was very good. The collards could've used a few more hours on the stove. I really wanted to love this place because we both love a good barbecue pit, but this was not it. read more

Large BBQ restaurant in Black Mountain, fun decor with baseball caps hanging from the ceiling and license plates lining the interior walls. Lunch service on a Saturday was good, the gentleman at the counter was knowledgeable and quick. Arrived just in time because a few moments later there were a line of teenagers from the counter to the door! Once your food is ready, they call your name so it can be picked up at the front counter. Ordered pulled pork plates, with fries, beans, and coleslaw. Each tray came with a few pickles and hush puppies. The pulled pork definitely needed sauce to provide flavor. Nice selection of sauces at the table, love the Alabama white sauce!! The hush puppies were disappointing, not home-made and most likely frozen. The drinks, lids, silverware, etc. is all self-service at the back of the restaurant, near the location where you put your trays and trash after bussing your own table. Was in Hendersonville to buy apples and was going to stop at Wendy's up the street. Caught by a traffic light. While waiting for it to change, I spotted Phil's. Was I glad I did! Beautiful view -- horrible food. If you're on the road & looking for a good Q stop, my down-and-dirty quick review is.... keep driving. Sampled the pork, chicken, brisket & ribs. And of those four, the ONLY edible meat was the ribs which were "okay" flavor, decent texture, but TINY considering they were supposed to be St. Louis ribs. To my surprise, the chicken was off-the-bone & chopped, as was the brisket (chopped); and along with the pork, all three of these meats were so dry & flavorless that the only way to choke them down was to douse them in sauce. Thankfully, the ENC vinegar sauce was respectable & in combination with the classic red sauce added enough hint of flavor & moisture to get about 1/2 of the meat(s) collectively swallowed. But even then, I've been burping dust ever since. Props on the baked beans. And their fries were good. But the hush puppies were an insult to the pallet -- rock hard & tasted like frozen cardboard. Definitely not made in house. Great location & view as mentioned. But the inside, decorations, etc. were filthy & dropping dust all over the area where you order, then later also pick up your food. This is a one-and-done place for anyone who knows/loves real BBQ. And if you do, just keep on traveling east until you find some in Marion, Rutherford College, Yadkinville, Winston-Salem, Lexington, Kernersville, Greensboro, Burlington or beyond. Wrost bbq ever. Dry. No flavor, most of the sides come from a bag. Absolutely the worst bbq I've ever tastes.

My wife and I stopped by for dinner and they would not serve me because I only eat meat therefore I could not buy a pound of brisket to eat at the restaurant. To go only they said. My wife got her meal and I basically sat and watched her eat. I'm not impressed with the service even once I explained that I literally only eat meat. Will not return.....I hope there is somewhere near that has the sense and decency to serve customers. We are here now in town but Phil's bbq will not be a place I'll be ever again. First trip to the Black Mountains and stopped in to Phil's. A really cool place decorated with countless hats from diners of Past. They had a nice deck to outside and the choices seemed endless with tasty hush puppies, fried okra, onion rings, collard greens and all the fixings to go with our ribs, brisket, chicken and pork. The sliced brisket was mouth watering and the ribs were tasty. We ordered a sampler and were a little disappointed with the size of the ribs (which did not measure up to a separate full rack we ordered) and pulled chicken, pork and brisket was more minced than pulled and a bit dry. Open on Sundays, which is tough to find in these parts, tasty Carolina bar-b-que. If you're planning to go with a group the dinner packs are worth it. Say 8-10 people, but it fed 6 adults and 2 children just fine with just a little pork left for omelets or sandwiches the next day. This is our go to place for BBQ. Don't forget to try their homemade sauces, especially the white BBQ sauce, which is mayo based with some spice, is one of my favorites. We usually get the 2 meat combo with chopped pork and chicken but tonight tried the ribs and meat combo.... More than enough to make 2 meals out of it. Also I love the fried okra and mac and cheese. Stopped by on our way to Maggie Valley. Nice place, hats hanging on the ceiling is an awesome touch; quite unique. We ordered the Meat combos, I got brisket and pulled pork and My guy got all the meats, Neither of us was disappointed, infact we both were quite happy with the brisket because it was absolutely incredibly delicious and tender. Seeing the billboard for bbq on the way to Asheville had to investigate. Get off at the exit make a left and the Phill's is on the left a few hundred yards up. Unfortunately I was left with my head hanging as they aren't open on Monday or Tuesday. On the way home made it a point to return. After perusing the menu asked about the brisket was it wet or dry and how long it was smoked? The girl behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about thankfully help was near by to answer questions. Brisket is smoked 12-16 hours and is the wet kind which is straight up my alley. Sides ordered were collards and green beans then paid and waited. Upon opening the box was pleased to a nice portion of juicy sliced brisket and sides. The meat was tasty for sure, while trying three of five sauces found the meat didn't need sauce at all. Collards were on point beans were fine. I really wanted smoked wings (to go), again confused girl behind the counter? Having been told orders were (8-10) depending on size was fourteen dollars ended up leaving without them needing to get back on The road. The prices are a bit on the high side so don't be shocked my plate was twenty dollars. I'm still thinking about that brisket. If your in the area do give this place a try. read more

Not awesome. Was hoping for a good experience with pulled pork, rack of ribs, and 2 orders of smoked wings but it turned out to be a bit overcooked, dry, and lackluster at best. Was staying in Black Mountain so next time will drive into AVL for better bbq options. Nothing personal just not great. I do want to say the staff were wonderful and super helpful. Better options for food in Black Mountain are Cousins Cubans Cafe (best Cuban for MILES), My Fathers Pizza, or Trailhead. read more
