Soooo we were visiting our friends Adrienne and Cliff in Black Mountain and they took us to this place that they said was very good. They left out the part about it being one of their favorite places. We took our dog and what a pet friendly area Black Mountain is. We sat outside and were greeted by Kakki. If you go or I'll say when you go, ask for Kakki. She was not only sweet but an incredible and knowledgeable server. We were all looking over the menu and made choices. We'll all but me ‍ Ordered was the burger which our friend said was delicious but more so he kept raving about the potatoes. Next ordered was the French toast which our other friend said was amazing. Then my wife ordered the lamb stew with rice. Ugg that is what I wanted so of course I had to change my order. The stew was Fantastic, delicious, flavorful, did I say delicious. Now for me. I was looking at the pies. There was the chicken and mushroom, spinach and feta and then Kikki said"so you want the peppers steak. I said , well I guess so. Wowwwww great choice. We drove to Black Mountain just to try this South African restaurant and we were not disappointed. Decor is a hodge podge of African masks, art, maps, and memorabilia. Very rustic vibe with chickens and pigs outside. Server was very attentive. She talked us through the menu giving her favorites and recommendations. The food was delicious - sausage rolls and chicken liver mousse were amazing. I had the Bunychow, my first time having it and it didn't disappoint. I had dinner twice at Bush Farmhouse and both times the food was excellent and the staff attentive and flexible. I had the savory pie and their curry and can recommend both. The biltong was great, although this is the first time I have eaten it -- so nothing to compare to except American jerky. We had reservations for a group of six, and everything from start to finish was fantastic. The staff was incredibly welcoming, quick, and friendly, making us feel right at home and sharing personal stories and recommendations. I ordered the Bobotie, which was flavorful and comforting, with fragrant minced meat and rice. The Sausage Rolls we shared, and they were flakey and delicious. The farmhouse Salad was beautifully plated. The Malva, a traditional South African dessert comprised of an apricot infused spongy cake served with warm custard and whipped cream was a standout. It's a sweet, rich dessert that ended the meal beautifully. The restaurant also offers a selection of South African wines, carefully curated by the staff during visits to the country. We enjoyed a Cap Maritime Coastal Pinot Noir 2023 and a Reyneke 2020 Syrah. South African treats and biscuits (including Malva mix) are also available to take home. The property is also unique. One of the best local hangouts, especially if you are staying or residing in downtown Black Mountain, Bush Farmhouse is a glorious place with mouthwatering, heavenly South African-inspired cuisine and some of the most satisfying cocktails I have had in my life. What was great about Bush was that it was literally walking distance from our Airbnb. Therefore, we ate dinner there, had pre-dinner drinks there, and had nightcap drinks there. The atrium-like outdoor bar area has all the feels of a neighborhood hangout with a South African-Bush-like atmosphere that is down-to-earth, chill, and most welcoming to anyone. When you walk towards the front entrance, the building itself is this bucolic cape property, with its own garden and greenhouse in the back where they grow their own vegetables and herbs. The front of the building has porch seating before you enter the main part of the first-floor house, which almost serves as some sort of general store, as they sell South African-produced goods. In there, you can wait for one of the servers to check your reservation and be seated. While there are a couple of tables indoors where you can take your meal and pick up some South African-produced goods, the atrium-like patio bar area is where you will want to grab a seat. We were greeted by Mark, the owner and executive chef, a really cool dude who made us feel at home immediately. We chose to sit at the bar, which is where we ended up going every other time we stopped at Bush Farmhouse for food and drinks... but most of the time, it was drinks. There are a variety of wonderful cocktails to enjoy there such as the Just Now with a synergetic blend of rooibos gin, honey, lemon, egg white, and amaro nocino. The Sundowner Negroni was quite good that included capertif, while my favorite and go-to was the Corpse Reviver #2, made with Mancini vermouth, lemon juice, Cointreau, and lots of love. If you're looking for after-dinner imbibements, their espresso martini and lychee spritz (made with gin) are terrific options. Food-wise, you can't go wrong with the scrumptious grilled octopus served with fresh veggies from the garden, like mixed greens and tomatoes, and pickled onions. If you want a real taste of South Africa, you can't go wrong with the Bobotie, which consists of a cape Malay curry-infused meatloaf cooked and served in a ramekin dish with egg and served with rice and chutney. The pap and boerewors were also delicious, consisting of maize meal, morogo, and farm sausage, and served with a tomato onion gravy. For dessert, the chocolate mousse-like dessert was fabulous without being too heavy and good to the last bite. Bush Farmhouse was a fabulous find, a local hangout that offers excellent South African cuisine made from fresh ingredients and titillating cocktails that will make you thankful you walked there and can walk back to where you came from. read more

Slightly off the beaten path in Black Mountain NC is the Bush Farmhouse-a South African themed casual gem. Based on our three years of living in South Africa, we needed to give it a try and were very pleasantly surprised. The menu is largely (although not exclusively) South African, and is very authentic. We shared great memories over favorites such as bobotie, boerewores and pap, and a magnificent malva pudding, hot out of the oven. Add a very creditable list of South African wines and a friendly and knowledgeable staff, and our afternoon in Bush Farmhouse's garden was just perfect. I see a lot of comments about the service. That's the one area I cannot fault. I went last night with my son - we stopped in on the way back from Tail of the Dragon, headed to Raleigh. Having grown up in SA, I'd heard about this place and wanted to give it a try. I left disappointed. Food was okay, prices seemed high. First was the biltong/droe wors. Ridiculously small serving for $15. Both the biltong and the dry wors were lacking - definitely not enough coriander seed or seasoning (black pepper/salt/worcestershire sauce) used. My son had the bush pie - he enjoyed it, but complained about the size of the serving. I had the lamb bunny chow. I used to get bunny chow as a younger man, in Durban, at UND. This didn't bring back the nostalgia I longed for. Maybe I'm losing my mind, but was it served with tzatziki sauce?! I wanted to try the melk tert, but given the lack of execution on the prior dishes, I decided to save myself further disappointment. I called prior to driving over to this restaurant for a reservation and got no answer during business hours. When I arrived, I was told that the wait would be 20-30 minutes. My party of 2 waited for over an hour and 15 minutes for a table. When we approached the hostess she did not have a spot for us. It looks fabulous and tastes even better!!! I can't get over the deep charm of this place. While waiting for my food I wandered to see the garden, fire pit, stage, and animals. They have the largest pot belly pig I have ever seen!!! Ok let's get real... THE FOOD. So good. So familiar to a once native South African. The elegance, the flair, the FLAVOR is SPOT ON!!! Very much authentic and true. The curry had a beautiful spice and aroma. The steak pie was so light and had an incredible crust. Light flaky and butter rich. The burger our little had was hand pressed. Perfectly charred and had fresh chips! Amarula shot at the end was a perfect sweet to end the meal. Visited the Bush Farmhouse the other day for a midday bite. This was a unique environment with an eclectic whimsical feel. We were excited to eat here as the food sounded delicious and the space seemed inviting. I know we came midday at an awkward time between lunch and dinner but there were plenty of people there. My partner and I got mixed in the shuffle as the kitchen was resetting I suppose. We sat at the bar and had some drinks while we waited for a table, but as time passed, we had to ask to be moved for service. Then once finally seated, still felt a bit forgotten as other tables were getting food/seated/checked in on. I think it was probably a really busy day and we got lost in the transitions. I would come back as the food was great but service was a bit spotty. We left feeling a little confused, but I think it's still definitely worth a visit if you're considering eating here. read more

A New England friend of mine and I got together and happened upon this place by doing a search on Yelp! When we got there, we discovered a quaint little house. They remodeled it and made it very comfortable - like you're actually having dinner at a friend's home. The bar is in a larger room with good local music. Our waiter was the son of the father and son team who own and run this restaurant. They serve only South African wine, and we had a couple that were absolutely delicious. It was fun to talk to such a friendly guy who had a lot of information and stories to tell us about his travels. My friend had the octopus salad and I had the salmon cakes. So delicious.
