We've been to Hell or High Water a few times now, and honestly--it still feels like one of Black Mountain's best-kept secrets. Every time we go, I'm kind of shocked it's not absolutely packed. This is part of the Foothills Meats family, and if you know their spots (the butcher shop, the food truck, The Grange, etc.), you already know--they don't miss. So we went in the first time pretty confident, and they absolutely delivered. The space itself is great, but the rooftop is the real standout--easily one of the best views in Black Mountain. It's such a good spot to sit, have a drink, and hang out. Speaking of drinks--the bar is excellent. The bartenders have always been great, super easy to sit at the bar and enjoy yourself. They've got a strong liquor selection and fun, well-balanced cocktails. Now the food. Everything we've had has been consistently good, but our last visit really stood out. We shared the pork katsu sandwich, the sweet potato biscuits, and the poutine. The pork katsu was done really well--crispy on the outside, tender inside, with that classic crunch from the cabbage and a slightly sweet, tangy katsu-style sauce. I also really liked that the sauce was on the side so you could control each bite. The sweet potato biscuits surprised us--in the best way. Those are easy to mess up, and these were not. Soft, flavorful, slightly sweet with that savory balance, paired with ham, sorghum butter, smoked cheddar, and red eye gravy--it's a really thoughtful combination that just works. And the poutine... so good. Crispy fries, rich mushroom gravy, and cheese curds that actually hold their texture. It's hearty without being heavy, and every bite felt balanced. For the level of quality they're putting out, the prices are very reasonable--which makes it even more surprising that it's not more crowded. It's right in downtown Black Mountain, but we actually drive all the way from Flat Rock to come here--and it's absolutely worth it every time. Overall, this place just nails it. Great drinks, really solid food, beautiful setting--and somehow still flying a bit under the radar. Definitely worth checking out. read more

We were off to a rocky start in the beginning.....but, as time went on...our servant Eva was so delightful and very informative about the food, anything she didn't know she found out! The food was incredible with blends of specialty herbs in the foods. The chef concentrated on American and Japanese herbal mixes to create lovely tons from steak, lobster and trout dishes. Always like to try a different restaurant when passing through Black Mountain. We had a nice midafternoon lunch. Rooftop seating had beautiful views! Not a lot of shade available but we managed. My husband enjoyed a pork cutlet katsu sandwich with fries. It was a bit over cook but still tasty. I had a pastrami Reuben and fries. The pastrami was rather smoky and a lot of fat. Once I pulled off the pile of fat, it was good. The fries were nicely season. Serve was speedy and friendly. Restroom was clean and ADA compliant. The parking is very dicey. No dedicated parking and no handicap parking near by. Overall, a solid four. read more

Excellent!! Definitely on the top 3 restaurants in Black Mountain. A more modern upfit for an old downtown building, the space is warm and inviting. A little confusing getting inside - the upper deck bar area and lower dining area have separate entrances, around the corner from the hostess station. Staff is warm and inviting. Bar service offers solid pours; the menu is outstanding and our party of 6 all tried different dishes. Steaks were great. None of us were disappointed. We sat at the bar after a round of golf (tied the course record, 58 by the way) Back to the review: Burger was good. It was 6oz so my 3 year old was able to eat 4 of them. The service was below average. We waited about 37 minutes for our burger and wings that came out at the same time by the way. They have 3 bartenders behind the bar and I've been empty in my cocktail for 36 minutes. You can tell it's a mountain town because of how slow it is and there's ZERO urgency. 3 bartenders and was acknowledged probably 3 times. The 2nd time was when I was asked if I liked my burger as I'm about to take my first bite. Would I recommend this place to others? If the entire town is shut down and it's the only place open? Yes. Would I go back again? No I'd probably go down the road and get food poisoning from the local Chinese restaurant. 2.7 stars if this was Portnoys pizza review. read more

Went there spontaneously for lunch last week. The rooftop is an absolutely gorgeous place and you can see so much of black mountain. Lunch menu is limited and the restaurant itself is pretty pricey. I will say, the waitress gave some great suggestions. I had the spinach mushroom melt and added grilled chicken per her request and it was so good! Cristopher and team are great! I came from out of town to get engaged and have a celebratory dinner afterwards. I loved the ambiance of the rooftop bar, and they even put out a flower vase with our favorite flowers. One of my family members was wheelchair bound and they were able to call the fire department and carry her up because there was a broken elevator. Jimmy was our sever and he was so kind, personable, and knowledgeable. My partner and I ordered the steak with pomme frittes, the tater tot waffle, bread, and had a special desert of the piña colada panna cotta. That sourdough rye bread with onion jam was SO good! As well as the sauce for the steak. If you're in the area, I highly recommend this place! Thanks to everyone for making the night so wonderful. read more

My daughter lives in Swannanoa and we came to this restaurant and we will absolutely be back. We shared six plates they come as small and large and all of them were excellent. my husband's favorite was the smoked trout dip. My favorite was mytaki mushroom. My daughters was the pork belly. Relatively new place in BM. Our group started at the roof top bar. Very cool outside area with fire pits. We had Old Fashions and a gin drink called Gramble something (sp?). Both were phenomenal. Service A+ in bar and restaurant. For dinner we ate in main dining room. Ambiance downstairs good, not many private tables but that was fine. We started with smoked trout dip, tater tot waffle, scotch olives, little gem and shaved carrot salad. Absolutely outstanding. Tater tot waffle comes with fish roe which sounds strange but was amazing!; trust me, try it. Main course included the 32 oz ribeye, scallops w pee puree and a pasta dish. They source the beef from local ranch and their own butcher shop, grass fed, pasture raised. Ribeye was delightful and we turned it into 3 meals; 2 steak and egg breakfasts. We loved everything. Only complaint might be that the scallops could have been fresher. Will always return to Hill or High Water. Outstanding addition to BM. read more

Hell or High Water is an amazing place to eat! The chef really understands how to put flavors and textures together while presenting a beautifully crafted and perfectly executed plate. They have an upstairs causal dining area and a more formal downstairs dining area. The staff are always knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. I had my favorite smoked trout dip with pickled mustard seeds served with tallow fried saltines, and my mom and I had scallops with spring peas, rhubarb and strawberry. The dip is not too smoky...just right. The crackers are the perfect accompaniment. The scallops were perfectly seared and tender. We topped off our meal with Spumoni Joconde with amarena cherries and pistachio praline and decaf coffee (served via a French press carafe!).
