2/3 scotch okives and the beef tartar with pita bread

My daughter lives in Swannanoa and we came to this restaurant and we will absolutely be back. We shared six plates they come as small and large and all of them were excellent. my husband's favorite was the smoked trout dip. My favorite was mytaki mushroom. My daughters was the pork belly. All were great. The service was excellent. It has a nice view upstairs.

    Fire, drinks upstair bar.

Relatively new place in BM. Our group started at the roof top bar. Very cool outside area with fire pits. We had Old Fashions and a gin drink called Gramble something (sp?). Both were phenomenal. Service A+ in bar and restaurant. For dinner we ate in main dining room. Ambiance downstairs good, not many private tables but that was fine. We started with smoked trout dip, tater tot waffle, scotch olives, little gem and shaved carrot salad. Absolutely outstanding. Tater tot waffle comes with fish roe which sounds strange but was amazing!; trust me, try it. Main course included the 32 oz ribeye, scallops w pee puree and a pasta dish. They source the beef from local ranch and their own butcher shop, grass fed, pasture raised. Ribeye was delightful and we turned it into 3 meals; 2 steak and egg breakfasts. We loved everything. Only complaint might be that the scallops could have been fresher. Will always return to Hill or High Water. Outstanding addition to BM.

Smoked Trout Dip with tallow fried saltines

Hell or High Water is an amazing place to eat! The chef really understands how to put flavors and textures together while presenting a beautifully crafted and perfectly executed plate. They have an upstairs causal dining area and a more formal downstairs dining area. The staff are always knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. I had my favorite smoked trout dip with pickled mustard seeds served with tallow fried saltines, and my mom and I had scallops with spring peas, rhubarb and strawberry. The dip is not too smoky...just right. The crackers are the perfect accompaniment. The scallops were perfectly seared and tender. We topped off our meal with Spumoni Joconde with amarena cherries and pistachio praline and decaf coffee (served via a French press carafe!). This restaurant is a gem, so be sure to check them out.

They took time to engage in casual conversation and created an atmosphere that felt personal and welcoming. A particular highlight was the owner's involvement throughout the meal; visiting the table on several occasions to personally describe each dish, which proved invaluable given our limited familiarity with South African cuisine. Ambiance: The setting strikes an ideal balance between relaxed and charming. We dined al fresco alongside the garden and farm animals, lending the experience a distinctive, unhurried quality that felt refreshingly unpretentious. The environment is well-suited to those seeking a genuine farm-to-table atmosphere without affectation. Food: The quality of the cuisine was genuinely impressive. The lamb chops were a standout -- cooked to a precise medium to medium-rare and seasoned with a confident, well-balanced hand. The dishes reflected the skill and experience of a kitchen operating at a high level, with clear attention to both technique and ingredient quality. Overall: Bush Farmhouse delivered on every front. The combination of superior food, engaged and joyful staff, and a relaxed, authentic setting makes for a dining experience that is as memorable as it is satisfying. This is a restaurant clearly operating at its best, and one we would recommend without reservation to anyone seeking a distinctive and well-crafted culinary experience.

The restaurant and patio bar are within walking distance to other spots in downtown Black Mountain, easily walkable if you are staying at an Airbnb in the local area like we were. The cocktails were glorious. On the first night, Puck's Potion and Negroni were very enjoyable. We found ourselves at the outdoor bar with the patio behind us, surrounded by quaint shops offering various retail and service options. The bartender that served us was super cool on the first night. We didn't have to wait for stools and enjoyed our cocktails on high-top seats. The second time we went, which was our last night in town, we had a reservation and went downstairs into the cellar. Watch your step as you descend the stairs so you don't trip. It was lovely to enjoy the libations and vibrations with my wife on her birthday week as we enjoyed Bahn mi with mustard-glazed roasted pork and falafels. Enjoying the meal in the cozy dining space was lovely and stylish, with modern art-like seats and a little lounge with a sofa behind us.
