I have come here several times over the last few years when visiting Black Mountain, and here's the thing...The food is good, but the folks prepping food and taking your order leave a lot to be desired. It's very strange. The girl taking orders seems unsure of everything, and it appears she needs to "get permission" to sell customers anything. She'll turn around and look at a guy, who is always looking down at what he's doing and not at any people, and ask quietly, "Can I sell them two pounds?" He keeps looking down and eventually gives a barely noticeable nod or head shake. Then she turns back around and "let's us" place an order. Last time, she only got permission to sell us three pounds of brisket when we needed five, so we ordered chopped beef, disappointing our crew back home. This time, we got permission for the three pounds of brisket we wanted, which was all we needed, but we couldn't order a quart of cole slaw. No bulk cole slaw, she said. Then she told us that we could order individual cole slaw, though - just not bulk. I ordered five individual cole slaws after the guy nodded his head to her (after some hushed whispers, too) that we could indeed order five individual cole slaws. Obviously, we pay double for the individual orders. Keep in mind these things are all on the regular menus. They do not have whole chickens or parts of chickens except for chopped chicken meat. They do not have sausage. When they gave us our order, we asked for pickles and onions, what I typically expect as BBQ condiments, and again, the girl had turn and ask if she could give us those. This time, they guy himself, who was still looking down so as not to make eye contact with any distracting and inconvenient paying customers, seemed to package the pickles and onions himself and then hand them to her. Here's what we got: a thimble sized container of thin sliced red onion and a thimble size container of a few pickles. So weird and completely ridiculous. We went down the block to Ingles groceries and bought a sweet onion and our own pickles and jalapeños. No way were they going to give us jalapeños, so I didn't even bother asking. Guess what else we did not get? The five individual cole slaws we paid extra for!! They left them out of our to-go bags. We had an omission last year, too, which we had to go back and pick up. This time, we are not bothering going back for the cole slaws. Not worth it. This is no Texas BBQ, I can tell you that! Not served by nice hardworking folks who take pride in smoking their meat and welcoming their customers, making customer experience number one priority. I've never seen anything like it. After a long ride from Virginia into NC, it was pretty late but my craving for ribs outwayed the very real chance of gastric reflux that evening. I could only hope that my concoction of assorted antacids would save me from a most unpleasant night later at bedtime. Phil's BBQ is a really cool place if you are a sports fan, beside the various sports memorabilia on the wall, the ceiling was addorned with every type of sport hat you could think of, the whole ceiling was covered, it was really a cool affect. Now the St Louis ribs that I ordered with sauce on the side ( preventive maintenance) were tender, meaty, and delicious. The sides I ordered, mac and cheese and fried okra (love fried okra) were very tasty. The hushpuppies that came with the plate were nicely seasoned and went realy great with ribs. Phils is a great place to satify your rib craving, and BTW, the red Bar BQ was excellent and I was pleasantly spared a night of gastric torture!!! read more

This is exactly why I love YELP! I'm in a small town 400 miles from home and find this great little BBQ place. I had the sliced pork and chicken with sides of collard greens and fried okra...they also tossed in a handful of hush puppies. Because I'm in the Carolinas, I got the East Carolina vinegar sauce, and because I'm me, I also got the Hot BBQ sauce. I loved everything on my plate except the pork...it was ok, just not as stupendous as everything else. The Okra was fried crisp. The greens were the best I've had in months. My friends and I stopped by here on our way home from Catawba Falls and not having very high expectations, were very pleasantly surprised with our experience! They have a large outdoor patio overlooking the mountains as well as a large indoor seating that is colorful and fun! The owner has been collecting baseball caps for many years and they are strung about the ceiling. Customers can donate their hats to get added to the decor. There are hundreds of hats hanging from the ceiling in every color of the rainbow. I was just imagining all of the interesting stories connected to the hats and the adventures that the hats have been on. So cool! I've seen businesses that collect keys, and bras (haha), but never hats! As for the food. They have a huge menu with burgers, sandwiches, salads, ribs, and of course, BBQ. They have pork, chicken, and brisket, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can do a sampler plate with all three. I went for the pork, always my favorite meat choice, and I'm glad I did. The meat was flavorful and juicy and they have a bunch of different sauces to pick from. As for sides, they have all of the traditional BBQ sides such as hush puppies, cole slaw, fries, onion rings, fried okra, etc. I went for the sweet potato fries and mac-n-cheese myself and yummmmy, that mac-n-cheese was perfectly creamy and cheesy. We stopped here in September on our way home from Franklin. My hubby loves barbecue so he's always up for it. We got the 3 meat combo to share so we could taste a bit of everything. We chose chopped pork, chicken and brisket. They had multiple sauces to choose from but we both preferred the traditional sauce. The brisket was yummy, the pork was good and the chicken was dry - even with sauce. The potato salad was delish! It was hard to share that. The slaw was decent as were the hush puppies. My kiddo got the Mac and cheese with fries...yes, i know. The fries were very good and the Mac and cheese was very creamy and tasty - kiddo didn't eat it so i got it the next day. I happened to find this place over six months ago on accident passing through the area and have looked for it ever since. After today though I probably won't look for it again. The ribs are very good, cooked just right and have flavor. The coleslaw is a vinegar based one and had no flavor. It seemed like it might have been an afterthought to put some watered down vinegar and a little bit of celery seed in it and call it done. The baked beans are the extremely cheap restaurant ones which they have tried to doctor up with a little bit of meat and lots of sugar. The sauces are good but everything is loaded with sugar instead of flavor. Very unfortunate that things have changed and gone downhill. read more

Nice BBQ in a cool setting. I honestly didn't expect much of the place. I expected it to be a little on the touristy side and that it would rely on the space more than the food. Well happily I was wrong. Driving up you can tell it's going to be a large restaurant. There is ample parking and a large outdoor seating deck to the right of the entrance. Beyond that is a dilapidated mini golf course (I would recommend they either renovate that or use it as a prop in the next walking dead episode). The views from Phil's are excellent with mountain scenery in every direction. When you walk in the front door the first thing that stands out is the hats. Hundreds of hats decorate the ceiling and walls of the place. It's a really cool and lively space with an open kitchen and dining room. Ok, so the restaurant is cool, how's the food? The hush puppies and fried okra were good. Nothing earth shattering but better than most places serve. The Que was the star though. It had a really nice smoke profile and the flesh was just slightly sweet. In my view, just about exactly what you want in pork BBQ. Throw in service with a smile and a nice beer selection and this a solid pick for BBQ while in Black Mountain. read more

Love their hot link!! It is locally made so it's not some old packaged hot link. I try to pop in when ever I'm passing through and pick up an order to take home. It's been a while since I have had their pulled pork but what I recall it's better than some of the more celebrated and known bbq's in Asheville. I like that they offer the red vinegar slaw rather than the typical creamy cole slaw. They have a large dining that has always appeared clean and they are more accessible with plenty of parking than a lot of the Asheville bbq restaurants. Used to like stopping by while traveling through black mountain area on 1-40. BBQ usually good. Good homemade chips. Today the 1/2 bbq chicken was pathetically small. Tasted not so fresh either. so don't get it. I complained and cashier said they got in a batch of small chickens. Then at least charge less than the $15. won't be going there again. read more
