Yes MB, there are better places than Loucas. Yet, we keep coming back here and have been coming back here for years. Must be the good food creatively prepared, good prices (BYOB definitely helpful in keeping the overall cost down), large portions, and a menu that's chock full of choices for everyone including both seafood lovers and meat lovers. The major negative here is that it's noisy. I have been to noisier places but what makes this an annoyance here is their practice of the server reciting the entire evening's specialties which could include about 8 appetizers and 8-12 main courses. Very difficult to hear and if your server has an accent, impossible to understand. My suggestion would be, why not just print up the specials and put it in the menu. Back to the food, I have been eating here since the place opened which had to be over 20 years ago. In that entire time I have had one bad meal. I actually blame myself for ordering the buffalo steak with cherry sauce. Otherwise, I am always extremely happy with my food. My favorites include Cajun calamari and shrimp arriabiata for starters, seafood fra diavlo, veal chop, soft shell crabs, or Chilean sea bass for my main. They also make an excellent Caesar Salad. We went for a Valentine's Day dinner and luckily my boyfriend made a reservation because they were so packed and tried to fit as many two tops downstairs as they could. That being said, service was still friendly and quick. They had many dinner specials that were not on the menu, but involved shellfish which I am allergic to so I could not try a lot of the food. I would give this restaurant 5 stars if there was a larger variety of non-shellfish dishes that I could choose from but if you like seafood or are not allergic to it then I am sure this will be a 5 star experience for you. The décor of the restaurant was very nice. There was an upstairs place for seating. We were sat on the first floor. The service was very good. The food came out in a timely matter. We thought the sampler was just a small mixture of all the items that he stated were in the sampler. However, it was 6 different plates so 6 different appetizers essentially. This was a special I believe. The appetizers are listed below with a thought of each one. On a side note, the bread that was served was very hard. I was not a fan. Fried Calamari - Not a fan. Had no flavor and the bland marinara sauce did not help. Stuffed Mushrooms - The best appetizer of the night. Not too big or small. Great filling. Was sautéed in some type of sauce, but could not determine what it was. Solid nonetheless. For an entrée, I ordered the Veal Sorrentino ($20.95). There were 3 small pieces of veal. It would be five stars but for one thing. Otherwise, we found it a stellar experience. I went with a party of twelve for a large group dinner. Everyone had a marvelous time. There were not complaints, only praise around the table for all individual dishes. Piping hot, beautifully presented and mouthwateringly delicious food served in generous portions. You know things are going well when everyone openly admires the entrees of their surrounding diners. Our waitress I believe was Elizabeth. She was so impressive. She had grace, poise, sense of humor was the overall essence of professionalism. After she informed us in vivid detail of the list of available specials - this took a few minutes, such were the options - I wanted to stand and applaud. My oysters were fresh and wonderful. The salad special my friend and I split - candied walnuts and pears were central to it - was wonderful, finished off with a punchy champagne vinaigrette. My seafood fra diavolo over capellini was a symphony of creative flavors that really popped. Each piece of calamari, scallop and shrimp was delectable and fresh. My friend's fish special made me gasp after he offered me a taste. You cannot ask for better seafood than they have to offer, if our visit is exemplary. What pissed us off and ruined what would have been a perfect impression is that they charged 2.75 for every single serving of iced tea. My friend and I are not alcohol drinkers (it's BYOB) yet prefer not to have water with food. Iced tea is perfect for that. He drank three, I drank two. That cost over 16 dollars. That is unforgivable. If it mentions in the menu that refills are not complimentary it was not where we could see it easily. As far as iced tea goes theirs was not brewed particularly well, either, but that's beside the point - virtually nothing is cheaper than adding tea bags to water and steeping. The markup is not only outrageous but terrible business. Furthermore, the head of our party brought in a birthday cake that cost 17. By charging us two dollars per slice as a plating fee, it effectively cost us more to slice the cake and have it served to us than the cake itself cost. Two dollars to cut a slice of cake? That's cheap, penny-pinching and low class. The food is beyond reproach and the service impeccable, but it's their nickel-and-diming business practices that leave a bad taste in one's mouth. I'm sure one day I'll darken their door again, but cautiously, and not terribly soon. read more

So I have been here once before and this past Saturday was my second time. My first experience was great because it was actually a surprise party for me . I didn't like the area downstairs as all the tables just felt like they were on top of each other. Once seated we were immediately given menus which was great. We had brought a wine bottle. Normally they put your wine bottle in a jug of ice to keep it cool however they did not this time. (This place is BYOB btw) . We were read the specials and then we placed our order for food. Our food took forever to come. It took more than 35 minutes to get our food which I thought was an insane amount of time to wait for two pasta dishes. we ended up getting the penne alla vodka and the penne Tuscany which had Quill shaped Pasta with Roasted Garlic, Eggplant, Tomato Concasse, Smoked Mozzarella and Fresh Chives. The penne all vodka was really good however the penne Tuscany was a bit disappointing. It had no flavor and was extremely watery. After dinner we were presented with a tray of dessert. OMG I WANTED THEM ALL. But settled with the chocolate cake.The cake was a dark chocolate cake with chocolate mousse. It was heavenly. Not too sweet, just the right amount of sweetness you want in a cake after eating dinner. I am not sure If I will be back, however if I do I will try to order something else. My family and I just ordered takeout from here. We ordered the veal parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, seafood cappellini, and the calamari. I understand that with takeout, some food quality can be compromised. Nonetheless, the following complaints are irrelevant of that fact: - the calamari was completely unseasoned. Not even any salt. I had to add salt and pepper to it just to eat it. - the veal parmigiana was more cheese than veal, and the entire meal was flooded with excess tomato sauce. - while the seafood itself was okay, the pasta from the seafood cappellini was terrible unseasoned, smelling only of garlic powder (not even fresh garlic) We called to order at 6:45, and the food was ready at 7:15. To me, that feels like the food was prepared ahead of time and simply reheated. And that's what it tasted like. It does not end there. We've been here a couple of times before, and were not ever disappointed to this degree (which is why we came back). Because of that, we called the manager, Gigi, to voice our complaint on the matter. I believe we were very respectful and clearly stated our issue, including our opinions on the quality of food. Rather than apologizing, she didn't believe us. She interrogated us, asking if we finished our food, how much was left, etc. because she believed we were trying to con them. Not only that, she asked us to drive back from our home, return the food we did not finish so she could try it for herself before she would believe us. I will be honest with you. I went to LouCas for date night with my boyfriend. We both enjoyed our meals but for me the standout was the Broccoli Rabe with cherry peppers and sausage side dish- it was delicious. We received great service and something that I really liked about our waiter is that when he was sprinkling Parmesan on my dish he did not make me feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to ask for a little more- this is major for a cheese lover like me. My only dislike- I really hate when restaurants have bottled/can soda as I drink a lot and it's a pain to have to pay for refills, because you know you are paying way more than what it is worth, so that lost points for me. My husband and I dined here on Saturday night, for a combo date night/checking to see if we liked the venue for a private party in May. The restaurant was PACKED, it felt as though every square inch of the space was occupied. There are a few separate rooms, but for the most part, there are large spaces with lots of people having large parties. These large parties were so loud. I considered leaving after we were seated in a corner, with a four top table right up against us, but we stayed. The table next to us was no less then 12 inches away from us, and we felt like we heard their entire conversation and vice versa; not exactly what I'd consider a romantic date. The service was good-- our waiter was a nice guy who was attentive, but he had to do some serious gymnastics to deliver our food and drinks. He came around frequently, checked on us, and was prompt. The food was.. just ok. My husband got the scallop and risotto special, which he enjoyed. There were four scallops for $30, which I felt was kind of a rip off. I got the pasta with seafood; the sauce was thick and gloppy, unlike anything I've ever had before. The seafood was tasty, but the sauce was overkill. I made it about 1/4 of the way through my meal before wrapping it. The free warm bread was the highlight of the meal. The deserts come out on a tray, I think it's the same one as they used in 1984. We split a slice of pecan cake, which was just ok. Overall, if we had a space that felt more comfrotable and less loud, I think we would have had a nicer time, but the food and antiquated ambiance leave something to be desired. While this is a relatively close Italian restaurant to us, there are dozens of better ones in Metuchen and Woodbridge who do the job much better. We decided against having our party there. read more

The many options, level of service and BYOB concept makes it a must visit in the Edison area. I definitely want to compliment our server Angelina, who was funny sweet and extremely helpful. We ordered a large array of items for appetizers and dinner as we were a big group but the ones that stood out were Rock Shrimp and Eggplant Rollatini. The burrata, one of the specials of the day was extremely underwhelming. The desserts were definitely a highlight as each one of them were perfection! The special sounded amazing. When it came to the table it looked amazing. Unfortunately, it didn't taste amazing, which is arguably the most important part... I ordered a steak with herb butter sauce and crispy onions. It came with vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes. First of all, the steak was enormous. This is normally a good thing, but again, it didn't taste that great--the meat was kind of tough and chewy and it tasted vaguely burnt for some reason. The herb butter sauce was actually really good, but there was barely any to make a difference in the taste. Maybe if they offered it in a container on the side? The crispy onions also tasted vaguely burnt and I'm not sure why. The steak also came with a salad dressed with balsamic vinegar, which was just okay.
