As stubborn as I can be, I must be contrite and admit I have found better Mexican food than in my own home town of Corona, a Mexican foodie mecca. And, you guessed it, it was right here. Now, I didn't taste everything on the menu, granted it was our first time, but following the advice of the owner of one of the wineries we visited that day, as well as the advice of those who came before us, we locked in on the most popular, al pastor. Our first clue that we were experiencing the real deal came with the chip offering. Two salsas accompanied the fresh chips, a dark, smooth red plus a light green. The thick, smooth red was the spicier of the two but with complex flavors that brought me back to delicious memories of long ago. I was hooked. But then I tasted the green salsa. It was bright, fresh and mouth watering. I have no idea what was in it, but I swear it might have had some cucumber, lime and possibly some avocado as well as a bright chile, blended into a buttery smooth concoction. Both were exceptional. Mr. B ordered three street tacos. For small $, he got a big plate of small, soft tortillas topped with lots of meat. Al Pastor of course. Garnished with cilantro and onion, his plate went from full to empty with astonishing alacrity. My tostada was even better, and a bargain at $6.95. Starting with a crispy tortilla smeared with some of the best refried beans on this planet, it was then layered with a good portion of al pastor. Some chopped lettuce, tomato, and cheddar cheese finished the masterpiece. While cheddar is not authentic IMO, I was told the pastor was cooked authentically, skewered on one of those vertical skewers, where it spins next to a heat source that sears and nearly burns that fatty, perfectly seasoned meat while pineapple slices drip cooked juices down on the meat. Then it is sliced off as needed. I cannot prove that. However, the tender meat reeked of deliciousness. I shall forever forward use this as my benchmark for the perfect al pastor and a fabulous tostada. I indulged in a small side of guacamole that was well worth the upgrade. Very bright from lime, delicious mashed Hass avocado, and some finely chopped onion and cilantro, it was simple, straight forward, slightly chunky, just the way I like it. There is no fancy café. It could use some TLC, rather barrio-like. But I really don't care. It is casual, comfortable, non-pretentious, and has a decent, small town feel. Lest we forget, this shall remain in my bookmarks. I want to make sure we visit this place whenever in the area. Loved this place! read more

I would say that the food for breakfast was good, but a little bit overpriced for the food. The staff was nice and the food came hot and timely and I would have given this a little better rating, but the patio area where we sat because we brought our small dog was really on the nasty side. The tables and chairs looked all beat up and most of the chairs had tears or gouged out holes in them. The patio itself was dark with no lights in it for the morning. If they worked on this I think the place would be better. read more

Came here on a Friday night after driving for 3 hours. This place was one of the only places open later in Paso, and we paid heed to the glowing reviews for the al pastor. Service was quick and friendly if a bit shy, and the free chips and salsa were pretty good. It would be great if they had a mild pico de gallo, as both of the house salsas are pretty spicy. The bowl of limes and radishes was also a great touch. I ordered 2 Al Pastor Tacos ($1.75 each), a side of Rice & Beans ($3.50), and a glass of Horchata ($2.25). I thought the tacos had an okay price point, but that the horchata and rice/beans ran on the ridiculously expensive side. If I think about it, a 2-taco combo plate would run me around $7 anywhere, so what the heck, I went for it. The tacos were just alright for me - meat was a little tough and greasy, but palatable and I overall was thankful for my meal (we were really hungry). The side of rice and beans was pretty small, and the Horchata was practically water - no visible cinnamon or rice residue, and very very bland. I'm a bit confused by the barrage of rave reviews for this place, but I'm glad that this place has patronage that loves their food. I will say that when food is "authentic", that doesn't always mean it's mind-blowing. We most likely won't be back here, but it's a decent place to stop if you're taking a taco tour of the area. read more

Great Mexican Breakfast! Having grown up in San Juan Capistrano and raising my family there, I've got a pretty good sense for quality Mexican fare. I ordered chili verde with two over easy eggs and beans. Not on the menu but they were nice enough to make it anyway. Flavors and freshness of every ingredient was top notch! I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I just moved to Paso two months ago. I guess I'm used to what the competitive nature of the Mexican food industry in Los Angeles, which makes for excellent Mex to be found all over the LA area. I've been looking for good Mexican food in Paso, and I still haven't found anything satisfying, Los Robles Cafe, unfortunately, is no exception. I ordered the chilaquiles and the carne asada topping option. I should have ordered them without carne asada. The chilaquiles themselves come out soft and soggy, not crispy or crunchy. Even if chilaquiles come out of the kitchen soft, usually the decent Mexican places can still bring them out to your table so that when you start eating them, they still have some crisp or some crunch, to give that experience. These chilaquiles are a poor example of the traditional dish, not to mention they were outright pretty bland on flavor. Pretty sure everyone will agree Mexican food is known for its bold and vibrant flavors. This wasn't it. On to the carne asada addition. They use a poor cut of meat, with too much tough tendon incorporated on the meat. Not only is it unpleasant to have to randomly chew through tough, rubbery pieces of chopped steak, but the "carne asada" was also pathetically seasoned. This did not taste like real, well marinated, Mexican carne asada. If it is Mexican style carne asada, then I'm not familiar with this region"s style. I am not kidding when I am describing it as a cut of meat with too much tough and rubbery tendon, because I can assure you the moment the waitress brought the plate to my table, the slightly gamey smell, and the sight of cooked brownish white tendon along the edges of some of the cuts of meat, told me this wasn't going to be as good as I thought, based on someone's recommendation of this place. I'm not sure where the owners are from, I'm not sure where the chef with the recipes is from, and I'm not sure where the cooks are from, nor am I sure where the waitresses are from, but I'm pretty certain they are all of Latino descent, but I don't know if they are Mexican. If they are Mexican, they really need to put more effort into their dishes. I sincerely feel like this is a dish that is lazily and hastily put together. I haven't tried any other dishes, but this one left me with no desire to return. I don't know, I may return for another time and maybe for some pancake and eggs, which I imagine you can't go wrong. Maybe I'll try their burrito or breakfast burrito, if they have a breakfast burrito, but I'm a little bit worried to be munching down on something that's pretty tasteless. I swear, these Mexican food establishments in Paso really need to step up their game. I guess there just isn't enough competition to pressure them into actually trying to make good food. I give credit where credit is due, and I asked for salsa and the waitress brought me a green salsa and a red salsa, and I will say, their two salsas were spot on. What happened Los Robles Cafe? This place used to be the real deal for tacos El Pastor. I'd go all the time with my friends. They slow cooked it out in that little side room on the spindle wheel all day long and shaved it off to order! Tasted absolutely amazing!!!!! I've never had anything else like it in my life. I was super excited to take my sister there, I don't get to Paso often and I haven't had it in years. When I saw nothing going on in that side room I immediately thought they didn't do El Pastor anymore... well she said they do it still but they must fry it because the lack of flavor definitely reflects that they're cutting corners & not doing it the way they used to. Such a BUMMER! The waitress was rude, rolled her eyes from the moment we walked in and had an attitude like we were a huge bother when we talked to her. Once she dropped our food she never came back to check on us and never refilled our empty drinks. I had to finally go up to the counter to pay and still waited quite a while because she got all frazzled with a bunch of new tables which obviously took priority over us. She had another server there too who was equally as unfriendly as she was and never acknowledged or tried to help me as I stood there at the counter. They really need to work on their customer service big time!! To top it all off, it made us feel extremely uncomfortable having the cooks in the kitchen staring and gawking at us through the kitchen window the entire time we sat there. Seriously? Wife and I went here for breakfast this morning and had a nice experience. The waitress was cordial, they kept the coffee coming, and the food was wonderful. I ordered the nopales mexicana which I really liked. The potatoes had a good spice to them. My wife ordered the huevos rancheros which she enjoyed as well. We are definitely coming back with our son who is the French toast critic. Be fun to see what he thinks. read more

To finish off our world vacation, we had to drive back to Pismo from SFO. We stopped in Paso for brekkie. I decided that I'd like to try this Mexican place. It also has "regular" breakfast which is what Jack loves. I had the special Al Pastor enchilada with beans and potatoes. The pastor was good. The beans were outstanding. I normally avoid pinto beans, preferring black. These had tons of flavor. Ant the two salsas, red & green, were spectacular. Jack had a ham steak with eggs. It was so big that he ate only half and we used the rest for two more breakfast dishes at home. Service was pleasant, not the best ever. The totopos we asked for never came. I stopped in because of a recommendation from my daughter and wow was she right! The Al Pastor tacos are some of the best I've had, a deep and fresh flavor and perfectly soft and chewy. The red and green salsas on the table are spicy and delicious. This hole in the wall also serves breakfast items and has a full selection of lunch and dinner combinations and entrees. Walked in to a quaint little spot with amazing smells coming from the kitchen. The wife ordered her usual, 2 eggs over easy, has browns and bacon. I, on the other hand, went for the pastor enchiladas with eggs and home fries. Food was served up hot and fast, got out order in under 10 minutes. My choice did not disappoint, Deee lish ussss!! This place is pretty solid! I was driving down from the bay area and my mom and I decided to drop in for some breakfast. I had the Chilaquiles and she had some sort of egg platter, I can only speak for the Chilaquiles but they were pretty damn good. The sauce was flavorful and the chips weren't too soggy. So I ask her if I could get a side and she gives one of these little small container that was not even half full. So I'm like can I have one more. She's like it will be $2.95. I asked one girl with glasses that I was wondering where we should go to get seated and she said please wait and minutes passed. Y with no acknowledgement whatsoever. I finally asked another server that I've been standing and waiting and told her we're a party of 4 and nothing. We left!
