First off...the service is a bit hit or miss. It started off great and then the place got busy so it faltered a tad. I care not because the food is so worth the minor delays. Be patient, my friends and enjoy your drinks. Now to the drinks: Do the weird tamarind margarita. It is so good with the chili salt on the rim. The regular margs are just as yummy but not as odd and fun as the other. Reasonable too even outside of happy hour prices, I thought. I had a lovely house red there that was a good price as well. Something to drink for everyone! Try the cheese chorizo dip too. Rich and tasty. Also, as other people suggested ask for the roasted salsa! Their regular one is really good and fresh tasting, but the roasted is just that much better if you like an extra kick and some unique flavor as well. As for the meals--HUGE portions and amazing flavors! None of us could finish our meals and I was with a couple of big men. I had the chili relleno and this has to be one of the best ever. So often the sauce that they smother it with is canned tasting or a throw away, but not here. It had peppers and onions and it was everywhere. Perfect. My father ate the bacon wrapped shrimp and how can you go wrong with that? They were cooked perfectly. The shrimp tacos were huge and there was no skimping on shrimp. We also had some fish dish that was covered in an amazing sauce (forget which one) but it was also cooked perfectly and was tender and full of flavor. It's like the difference between a sketch and an oil painting. Los Compadres is the Siqueiros of Mexican restaurants in Long Beach. It's authentic traditional food passed down from generations. We counted 7 feliz cumpleaños tonight, including my beloved. It came down to her choice of dessert: tres leches (her mother's daughter, truly). They say on your birthday it's your mama's "birth day" too. I don't want to take any shine away from my angel, (even if we did labor for 40 hours). I'll just order myself a paloma and mezcalito in a red drink with flower petals. It is the hour of the blood moon after all. I will travel miles and miles for a place that specializes in birria. They don't advertise that - but they should. It's delicious. Served with hand-made corn tortillas. I'm done. I ate everything. My belly is full of prebiotics (tequila), bone broth, and protein. Food on a scale of 1-10, I'd give it about an 8. Don't come here if you're indecisive because it will be overwhelming for you (took me forever to decide on my entree). There has got to be at least a 100 menu items...or more...200 maybe? The place is really big inside, and feels REALLY busy the 3 times I've been here. I recall big screen TV's blaring loud, music too in the background, groups of 10-20 people celebrating birthdays, shouting for Kobe & the Lakers, servers busy bustling through the aisles, kitchen, & bar area, a good amount of people in the lobby area waiting to be seated...etc., get the idea? There's a big part of the restaurant where you may end up sitting really close to people you don't know, kind of like picnic style and its very squooshy, like elbow to elbow. I'd recommend waiting for a booth so you don't get the obnoxious sports fan yelling and screaming right next to you. The service was good though, and I walked out feeling stuffed. Will I go back? Allow me to begin by praising the remarkable quality of the food at this establishment. The drinks have a delightful strength, the salsa is a perfect accompaniment, especially on a warm summer's day, and the entrees are truly outstanding. However, upon entering the venue, one would reasonably expect a level of professionalism. Unfortunately, this was not the case during my recent visit. I was disheartened to witness the staff, positioned at the end of the bar, behaving in a drunk and disorderly manner. What's worse, management seemed to turn a blind eye to this behavior, allowing an employee to inappropriately touch and mistreat other staff members while loudly using profanity throughout our stay. As a result, I find myself torn. On one hand, I recognize the exceptional culinary experience this place offers, making me contemplate a return visit. I can't wait to go back. Came across this place while looking for a dinner spot in Long Beach and after reading the reviews I was very excited to head in for some margaritas and good grub. Based on the recommendations of fellow yelpers I went with the Molcajete Mixto, extra tortillas and a spoon. Absolutely amazing, makes my mouth water thinking about it. The shrimp just soaked up the spicy tomato magic mystery broth, chicken was juicy and tender and the cactus/cheese/chorizo were an amazing and delicious surprise. Would have given the full 5 stars on my meal alone, but my friend and I did the order a few plates and share thing (best way to eat anywhere) and his carnitas were terribly dry and flavorless. Tasted slightly better once we let them soak in the Molcajete broth, but still pretty inedible. Hoping this was a one-time mistake because I love me some tender, juicy carnitas and I will be returning to give them another chance. Oh, and tasty margaritas, too! read more

Los Compadres is my favorite mexican restaurant in Long Beach!! We've been going there for years and absolutely love it (especially since we're from New Mexico and are really picky when it comes to Mexican food... ie. I can't stand Enrique's). My favorite meals there are: Chilaquiles (freshly made each time), Camarones Culiche (the green sauce is amazing), Flautas (chicken and shredded beef are both delicious), Pollo en Mole (tastes just like my grandmas), Enchiladas Michoacanas (with quail!), Molcajete Mixto (this even comes with nopal [cactus] in it!), and the fresh oysters are to die for (I could drink the Agua Chile they serve it with by itself... so yummy!). But the best part is the Michiladas (the real deal... with lots of lime juice, clamato, and chile salt rim) and the MARGARITAS! The Margaritas are so strong they are brown from all the tequila- I love it! My mouth is watering just thinking about this place. :) read more

First I must say you need to order the guacomole to start. The small portion is a huge amount for two people! It's fresh and the chips are delicious. While here make sure you try their home made corn tortillas too. We have eaten here numerous times and there is always a wait but it is a worth while wait. We enjoy the Chile verde. Very spicy! I love Los Compadres and since this one is the closest to my house, I frequent this one. This one has what all the other ones have: fresh food, friendly staff, quick service, and lots of seating. They do have a couple outside tables for those sunny days too. The way it's built lends itself to have a permanent queue which is filled frequently. The busiest times are sat or sun between 11-1. Let me tell u i am currently here and have waited an hour for seating along with 20 other ppl and crying kids. So 4 ppl walk in and hug the hostess talk about her crappy hair color and are AUTOMATICALLY SEATED!! tu huh! I got up and complain. I started coming to this place YEARS ago, and ALOT has changed since then...almost everything actually but the food. Service almost always is just ok, and more than once I've left saying "the waitress never stopped by to check on us". Yelpers were right on something but not sure but some of the dishes. I didn't like what I was having the last time I was there. I ordered this fish which came with lots of grease. It's definitely too greasy and salty for my taste. Their salad was tasteless. Although, I have to admit, I love their home-made tortillas. You can't get that at every Mexican restaurant. My daughters live in long beach and from time to time they will bring us to this lovely establishment. It is best to come early because during lunch the wait time is over and hour and dinner it can be a 2+ more hour wait time. If you like authentic Mexican food then it is worth the wait.
