There aren't many options in the area so we looked forward to trying this place. We started with the house salad -- basically just lettuce with one cherry tomato, and they were out of crackers, not a good start. Unfortunately it gets worse, I ordered the chicken fried steak based on all the rave reviews, but sadly had a very different experience. The batter wasn't crisp, in fact noticeably soggy and tasted like the oil needed changing. The mashed potatoes and beans were room temperature at best, and the roll was wet on top (not from butter which they claimed). Overall, very disappointing. We should have known based on such a large menu which included Mexican, seafood, steak, etc., evident they don't actually cook in this kitchen. Won't be returning. read more

Finally made the chance to drive to Harper and try out the cafe. My wife and I each had the special which was chicken fried steak with two sides. The food was delicious! The steak was crispy with just the right amount of white gravy. I had mac n cheese which was some of the best I've ever had and the mashed potatoes were lumpy and tasty. My wife had the onion rings and buttered corn for her sides which she said were both very good. The price was very reasonable. The only negative was that many of the desserts on their board were unavailable. Disappointing when you had your taste buds all set for a particular pie listed. Overall a very good comfort food restaurant which we will go back to. read more

Stopped here to eat on our way from Austin to Fredericksburg. It's a quaint country spot with one of the most extensive menus I've ever seen. Most likely because the town is so very small, not many places to choose from. When we first arrived I was hesitant with our rental car because there were teenage boys in the lot of the restaurant throwing rocks at cars (this was around 11 am). We went inside and mentioned it to our server who laughed it off and said they're on the football team and normally "good boys". She also mentioned that their coach was at the table near the spot she seated us. He and the other adults just didn't care. Our server finally went out to yell at the kids. Seriously thought I was in some bizarre movie about high school football ruling a small town. The interior has potential with some of the western, shabby chic combinations of woods and metals but the tables were cheap and reminded me of a fire hall. The checkout counter was covered with religious nonsense. I had chicken and waffles (for the first time ever) and the serving was enormous. Actually pretty ridiculous in portion size. The waffle was ok and the breaded chicken breasts were dry. Still though this was definitely an experience and adventure during our desert road trip. read more

Was in the Harper area... decided to try Longhorn for dinner. Loved it so much we went back for breakfast two days in a row. The staff is friendly and on the ball. The food is fantastic. A good menu of American, mixed with Tex mex. Everything we tried was really good. Highly recommended! We will be back if ever in the area again. read more

Longhorn cafe tends to be our best dining option when commuting west until today. The wait staff is always super sweet, friendly and accommodating. I am currently on a restricted diet and very sensitive to oils and butter. I just asked for a chicken breast, steak or beef fajitas cooked in no oil. The poor waitress had to come back out and tell me that the cook couldn't make me anything because the flat top grill has oil on it from everything else he's cooked. I suggested that he clean an area off with water to cook my food or use a skillet. He literally just needed to brown a small piece of meat for one person. She came back and said he told her he cannot accommodate me and my diet restrictions. So as a result, I had to sit and watch the rest of our family, eat their lunch as I had no food because the cook was not willing to clean a skillet off or a section of his grill. I am grateful I did not eat something that would make me sick, however this cook doesn't seem to have any problem solving skills related to his job role, nor does he care about the satisfaction of customers returning or the restaurants profit margins as he's turning away seated business. read more

Our local cafe. They have a huge menu from which to choose. I often order a poached egg with grits and either sausage or bacon, no biscuits or toast. My husband gets a half order of the Farmer's Breakfast; the portions are large. We often end up bringing about half of our meals home as left overs. I have also tried the brisket hash without the BBQ sauce (it is on the side). The brisket has a wonderful smoky flavor and the poached eggs are always perfectly soft prepared. The biscuits come home with us :) It is our go to spot before we spend a day working outside. read more

This restaurant owner is not sensitive to the needs of their customers. Their hours are for their convenience and not the customer. I don't know how long they can stay in business closing everyday at 2pm. I don't even try to eat there anymore. read more

I was indeed surprised to find myself in this little town outside of Fredericksburg, hungover and starving on a Sunday morning. My friends and I stayed at a local cabin about a mile away, and this cafe was listed in the "local dining" section of their "Get to know the area" booklet. Breakfast tacos. Enough said. I needed fried, so naturally I ordered onion rings on the side. Right?! Haha, anyway, they were pretty good. Okay, so tacos weren't cutting it and I chose a burrito. I ordered whatever I could fit in there ... bacon, eggs, peppers, onions, cheese, beans, can't remember the rest. Seriously, very good. And the salsa(s)! Homemade, just like all of the food, super spicy, just like I want it. You can tell this is a comfort food type of joint that delivers just that. Nothing fancy, no frills. Service is super. I was skeptical from the outside, but it's super cute inside. I had the special of the day: chicken fried chicken, garlic mashed potatoes and buttered corn with an appetizer of fried dill pickle chips. I don't have a single complaint. Their tea was also fresh...I'm rather particular about my tea. My friend had an avocado cheese burger and fries and she loved it. We are big fans! Visiting friends in Harper but It's quarantine time and the options are few. Longhorn is a nice spot on the main road with a wide variety. Since we can only do take out found their Facebook page which has a menu posted and called in an order for us. Food is pretty good for a small town eatery. Food is star fare country affair. Can't attest to any seafood but burgers, chicken fried steak and their sandwiches were pretty tasty. Not quite a 5 star experience only because there is not service to judge. read more

We were traveling through Harper and stopped at the Longhorn Cafe at noon. We were delightfully surprised at how great the food was. Our waitress was busy but efficient and very pleasant. The homemade brisket tamales were excellent were topped with trimmed chunks of delicious brisket. They offered a nice choice of vegetable sides and breakfast is still offered at noon. Keep Looking! Food is poorly prepared and they never get your order right. The prices are excessive for what you get. McDonalds or Burger King are a much better choice! Drive on to Fredericksburg, Kerrville or Junction if you want to eat, they are all about 20 minutes away and you will be much happier! read more

At the suggestion of my brother in law, my husband and I went to this little café in Harper Texas to have lunch while visiting the hill country for vacation. We were greeted right away. It was too late for breakfast so we chose to have lunch. The place wasn't real busy yet. They had a buffet that looked good but we chose to order from the menu. My husband got a cheeseburger which was very good. I ordered the chicken fajita nachos. The chicken was very good but as I looked around my plate there were a lot of chips with nothing on them and the cheese was hardly visible. I was not happy with the nachos due to the lack of cheese. We also never got a refill on our sweet tea and sat there forever hoping to get some. The waitress came by and said oh, let me get y'all some more tea, she never came back. I gave this place 3 stars due to the lack of tea refills and lack of attention to the new folks in town. It seemed like all the regulars were taken very good care of and we were left out.
