The building itself was built in 1890 initially as a mercantile store, then cycled through a number of other businesses over the years until settling on Francisco's. Besides indoor tables, they also have a number of seating options outside on the sidewalk if the weather is agreeable. There isn't a river view, but it could be good people watching on a busy tourist day. The interior is a single space with high ceilings and tons of art on the walls. It's small but feels intimate not tight. I wouldn't call the place fine dining or upscale, but it's a step above casual. We were there for lunch and I felt fine in shorts and flip flops, but wonder if dinner is a different story. The lunch menu was mostly simple cafe sandwiches, salads, soups, and a couple different nachos/chips and salsa/chips and queso appetizer options. The Mexican food were primarily the daily specials the waitress rattled off for us. Speaking of, service was very friendly prompt, and helpful. Our waitress did a great job helping us figure out what we were in the mood for, offered substitutions and chatted us up on where we were from and what we were doing around town. Great staff. Overall if you're in town and looking for a sit down meal keep Francisco's on your list of options.

After three visits, I kept hoping things would improve--but it feels like this place is leaning more on its location than the actual dining experience. First off, the setting is awesome. You're literally right on the ramp watching planes come and go--it's a great vibe and honestly the main reason to visit. But beyond that, things start to fall off. Each time I've been here, they've seemed understaffed. It's a seat-yourself setup, but even after sitting down, service can be pretty slow. On more than one visit, parts of the menu weren't available, and on my last trip, the kitchen wasn't even taking breakfast orders because they were too backed up. Food has been inconsistent: * Breakfast tacos were just okay * Eggs came out overcooked when ordered over-easy * Grits were watery * Bacon and sausage didn't taste fresh On the most recent visit, we had to switch to lunch. The burger was average, and the wrap was oddly put together--very thick but not well balanced. Also, the sweet potato tots we ordered were swapped out for fries. I really want to like this place because the location is genuinely special. But right now, it feels like a spot you go to for the view, not the food. With better service and more consistency in the kitchen, this could be a standout.

Our server, Betty, was absolutely wonderful! She welcomed us as soon as we sat down, was very kind and attentive, and explained that there may be a longer wait because they had several large groups and were also trying out a new system. We completely understood and appreciated her communicating that with us. Unfortunately, our interaction with another employee named darrell was very disappointing. My wife politely asked him for a couple of napkins. The first time, he completely ignored her without even acknowledging that she had spoken to him. She asked again, and while still facing away from her, he responded, "I heard you the first time. I'm dealing with something." I completely understand that the restaurant was busy and that employees can become overwhelmed, but there was absolutely no reason to speak to a customer that way. Even a simple, "I heard you, give me just a moment please," would have been completely understandable. I don't know if he was having a bad day or dealing with something stressful, but customers should still be treated with basic respect. Betty and the assistant manager, on the other hand, provided amazing service and were both extremely polite and welcoming. We really appreciated them. I just hope management addresses the way darrell speaks to customers because that interaction definitely put a damper on an otherwise decent experience. My ONLY reason for the 2 stars

Honest Review Rating: 2.5 / 5…read moreAtmosphere & Service: The diner has a quiet, traditional, old-school feel that caters well to an older crowd. The space is clean, and the staff was friendly, organized, and welcoming. Keep in mind that they operate on specific serving hours rather than staying open for the menu which reflects their more classic, traditional style. Food & Drinks: Unfortunately, the food fell short of expectations. The burger was decent, though minimal--served with only ketchup and no other condiments. The steak ended up being just ground meat topped with a slice of melted cheese. The fries were generic, frozen-cut style similar to what you'd get at a ballpark, and the coffee was surprisingly watered down, which was disappointing for a classic diner. Verdict: While it's a friendly and clean spot for anyone looking for simple, straightforward American that just meets the bar without any fuss, the food quality means we won't be returning.

The warm atmosphere and hometown feel made the experience just as memorable as the food. If you're craving a classic, no-frills breakfast, you won't be disappointed. I ordered the eggs and pork chops. The pork chops could have used just a touch more salt for my taste, but with a light sprinkle at the table, they were absolutely delicious. My daughter ordered the short stack, and those pancakes completely blew us away. They were hands down some of the best pancakes we've ever had and officially earned this diner my new favorite breakfast spot. What a pleasant roadside surprise we experienced at Route 35 Diner…read more On the way to a South Texas Ranch, a group of 7 of us met here to have lunch one Saturday morning. It's very easy to miss while traveling down IH-35 S, because by the time you see the sign "diner", you have passed it by. Although all 7 of us have been right by this place many times over the years, this was a first time experience for the group. In fact, we all failed to realize the diner was even here, as it is also overshadowed by the adjacent service station. The consensus was this was quite the unexpected surprise and each person gave a huge thumbs up for their own meal choice. Personally, I went with the poblano chicken and it was the best I've ever had, which is saying a lot. I believe I ordered this same dish dozens of times in a 60 mile radius and what set it apart was the tasty creamy sauce on top of a very flavorful chicken. The chicken was prepared differently and not the usual stringy stands of breast meat used in other local taquerias. The other dishes from the group were street tacos, shrimp quesadillas, fajitas and even a few with breakfast entrees. We all agreed this place is now on our radar and we are all coming back. A few of the waitstaff did not speak English, which was OK, because a few in our group grew up in Mexico, so the transition was easy. It also gave that authentic feeling that we are in the right place. But please don't let the language gap discourage you because the other helpers spoke English well enough for even the gringos in our group got what they wanted. So owners of this restaurant keep doing what you are doing and if you want to be busting from the seams with business, stick a huge sign in a strategic place and be prepared for more great reviews.
