What a pleasant roadside surprise we experienced at Route 35 Diner. On the way to a South Texas Ranch, a group of 7 of us met here to have lunch one Saturday morning. It's very easy to miss while traveling down IH-35 S, because by the time you see the sign "diner", you have passed it by. Although all 7 of us have been right by this place many times over the years, this was a first time experience for the group. In fact, we all failed to realize the diner was even here, as it is also overshadowed by the adjacent service station. The consensus was this was quite the unexpected surprise and each person gave a huge thumbs up for their own meal choice. Personally, I went with the poblano chicken and it was the best I've ever had, which is saying a lot. I believe I ordered this same dish dozens of times in a 60 mile radius and what set it apart was the tasty creamy sauce on top of a very flavorful chicken. The chicken was prepared differently and not the usual stringy stands of breast meat used in other local taquerias. The other dishes from the group were street tacos, shrimp quesadillas, fajitas and even a few with breakfast entrees. We all agreed this place is now on our radar and we are all coming back. A few of the waitstaff did not speak English, which was OK, because a few in our group grew up in Mexico, so the transition was easy. It also gave that authentic feeling that we are in the right place. But please don't let the language gap discourage you because the other helpers spoke English well enough for even the gringos in our group got what they wanted. So owners of this restaurant keep doing what you are doing and if you want to be busting from the seams with business, stick a huge sign in a strategic place and be prepared for more great reviews. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite after running errands. The place has that classic diner feel, which I really liked. Route 35 Diner is a cute little family restaurant. It's a pretty nice place to eat on your way out of San Antonio. I stopped here along with my daughter and her husband. I had the country and egg plate and it was really good. Homemade tortillas, tasty salsa made it even more tasty. My daughter had the cowboy breakfast, two eggs however you want them, pancakes and bacon or sausage for your breakfast meat. My plate and my daughters both came with potato's and refried beans. My daughter's husband had three tacos but he raved about the steak and egg taco. The only thing we didn't care for was the sweet tea, it was way too sweet. That may have been a one time thing but just be warned. The service was very good and our waitress was friendly. I would definitely go back. This is my parents favorite place to eat every Sunday after church so this is where they wanted us all to go after mass for their anniversary. I had the cheese enchiladas with carne guisada. It was good, not great. I had a margarita which was pretty tart, I was told they weren't allowed to serve until noon. I looked up the law because I thought she was wrong and according to Texas law we are allowed to buy alcoholic beverage after 10am with our meal. She made me wait 20 minutes. This is a not a fancy place but my parents love the food. My mother said everything she's had there is good. The menudo looked good. The meals are priced well and service was good. They charged me $.50 extra for the onions, enchiladas should come with onions. read more

The food and service were very good. After eating at a few crummy places recently during travel, we were so happy to find this place. I am vegetarian and asked if they would make the creamy poblano enchiladas with nopales (cactus) instead of meat and they did and they were fantastic! Next time I'll get them without cheese, since I am not a huge melted cheese person, but I would 100% recommend this and have it again in the future! My husband loved his Chile relleno also. Fyi, they have big rig parking, so if you're pulling a trailer, there is room for you. read more

Don't bother! We went in for a quick lunch on a Sunday - there were only 2 other tables with people and it took almost 10 minutes just to get our drinks! We ordered 2 burgers. The waiter didn't write our order down. It wasn't a complicated order, so we weren't alarmed (bacon cheeseburger - plain & dry) it showed up another 20 min later, no cheese. After walking it back to the kitchen counter ourselves, another almost 10 min go by. The waiter brought it back out with a heaping side of excuses and finger pointing but never seasoned it with an "I'm sorry." Both burgers had bone in them but I'm glazing over that as just poor quality meat as to be expected at a place like this. Then we go to pay- $28! For 2 burgers!? We're not cheap & don't mind paying and tipping well for a good meal & good service. But this was neither!! read more

This place is great! Yummy, hot food, great service. I love their Creamy Poblano Enchiladas! This is my favorite choice so far, besides their fluffy, fluffy pancakes at breakfast, which I had once and now think about everyday. Their caldo is great, their chicken flautas are homemade from scratch and oh so crispy good!! Their salsa and hot sauces are amazing, too! As I prepare to move into the area around the almost nonexistent town of Von Ormy, southwest of San Antonio, I tried one of the only eateries, attached to a gas station on the service road. The service was excellent and very friendly. The Monday specials were fried chicken and Ranchero Chicken enchiladas, which was what I decided upon. They were good, full of tender white shredded chicken chunks and a mild, but favorable sauce. The hot sauces were authentic and HOT, so I was pleased. I will return. read more

(slightly slow because they were busy with many customers, just a little overwhelmed) Home made flour and corn tortillas. Outstanding. Barbacoa and chorizo and eggs, tortilla soup was the best I've ever had (whole chicken quarter-leg and thigh in the bowl with squash, corn and onion). Red and green salsas were delicious. The service was quick and attentive, the inside looks definitely made us a lot more comfortable as it was nicely decorated. The food was really good! Hand made corn tortillas were great as well as the green creamy hot salsa, definitely a 5 score there! We ordered the Lengua platter, pork in green salsa platter and the Mexican burger. All dishes were served quickly and had good sized portions. The flavor was real Mexico, the flavor of my family's home made dishes. I've been in San Antonio two months and have been searching for a good Mex/Tex-Mex restaurant. I found it! Under new management, the food at this place is exceptional. Today I had the chile relleno. Best I've ever had, including my own. The meat sauce was a ragut/Bolonese-style. The Chile itself was perfectly cooked and topped with Verde sauce on one half and a poblano on the other half. I guess I'm considered a regular here. When I'm busy I love to pop in here for a taco or 2. My toddler loves it here. He yells "tea" every time we pass by. My husband loves the cowboy breakfast but I personally think the price could be a bit better on that plate. I love the asada and tea. The flour tortillas are REALLY good. I didn't even want to give it a single star. I pass this place every time I go to work so I finally stopped in. Before we even ordered our drinks I could see flies, we got our chips that were out in the open in a warmer which I'm sure the flies enjoyed. We ordered and I couldn't do it, there were to many flies. I got up and went to the register and still paid for the teas that I left right there on the counter. I really want to call the health inspector. Do not eat here unless you enjoy the taste of flies. read more
