Stopped by for a late lunch. Terrific casual cafe in an older part of SA. Lively decor, very traditional colors (see photos). We were greeted immediately and had chips and an awesome red salsa within a minute. Next up complimentary borracho beans. My husband said one of the top 3 maybe top 2 boraccho beans EVER. Iced tea came out while we were reviewing menu. My husband went for the standard breakfast: eggs, sausage and huge pancakes, all very tasty. I had a chicken fajita salad, well balanced with guac and sour cream on top. Added some of their delicious salsa as a dressing. Plenty of parking in front and side of cafe. Oblate Cafe is definitely worth a visit! We stopped by while visiting San Antonio. The food was really tasty -- we ordered 2, potato, bean and cheese tacos. And the huevos rancheros plate with carne guisada. Everything was super yummy! I can't forget the tortillas!!! The flour tortillas were soft, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is nice and family-friendly, making it a comfortable spot to enjoy a good meal. Service was great! We were constantly checked on to make sure we were okay. Great and friendly staff. One of my favorite Tex-mex spots we've had in SA! We loved their flour tortillas, reminds me of my mom's. I didn't have to add salt to the papas and chorizo taco, which I always have to do. Coffee was great and they do offer decaf. I noticed someone stated they didn't but definitely do. Have gone back to Oblate and have not been let down. Today after ordering we were brought some chips and salsa and some charro beans which were da bomb! My mom and I ate puffy beef tacos which were great not only in quantity but were soo tasty too! Our waitress was awesomely nice as was the cashier. Due to COVID-19, few restaurants were opened for dining in, even though the city ordinance recently allowed restaurant to open at a 25% capacity. Most were still only offering curb pick or takeout. After calling a few restaurants near me, I was happy Oblate Cafe was open for dining in. I was excited when I was served chips & salsa since I haven't dined at a Mexican restaurant for over two months. The restaurant management and staff did an awesome job enforcing social distancing while maintaining a clean safe dining experience. I've dined at Oblate Cafe in the past, but I forgot how good the food was. Omg, the Enchiladas & Carne Guisada Plate was delicious. Well worth the carbs consumption! The Carne Guisada was lean, tender, flavorful & not greasy. I'm not a big fan of cheese enchiladas, but Oblate Cafe's recipe will get you hooked! I was enjoying every bite of the cheesy saucy flavor while imagining my next dining experience. What will I order on my next visit? The homemade flour tortillas were very good, I ordered mine a little well done. It's easier to scoop up the refried beans with a nicely cooked homemade flour tortilla... yum! Went for lunch the other day based off the SA Current article mention of this place as one of the 25 hidden Mexican gems. While the food was decent and priced reasonably, I wasn't that blown away by the food. My wife had the cheese enchiladas and I ordered the Chile relleno as it was the special. This is the first and only time I have ever eaten a Chile relleno that had a crunch. Upon further examination, I noticed the poblano was not deserted so the crunch was the seeds that ended up being deep fried. Not a good texture and kind of ruined an otherwise good dish. My wife thought her lunch was decent but didn't care for their rice. All in all, a one and done for us. read more

Wife ordered a carne guisada with cheese taco and country and egg, I had a carne guisada with cheese taco and a fajita taco Lemonade wasn't good, was very bitter and I tried fixing it with more sugar but nope Unsweet Tea was good Carne Guisada was the best there! Country and egg was extremely salty Fajita taco was under seasoned If I come back I'll definitely be getting Carne guisada with cheese again As far as the other stuff I don't think so, but knowing me I always give restaurants second and third chances, that's just me. This place was such a treat!! Very attentive, accommodating service, really classic and tasty breakfast tacos, and a lot of variety on the menu. I wasn't really wow'ed with the chips and dip. It tasted very standard. Tacos were like I said, very classic! Nothing crazy special but also tacos I would eat every other day bc they're just solid. I didn't like that they didn't give me salsa with the tacos though. That dress up game be important My BF's plate was also really good. When I think of San Antonio I think of places that are quintessential San Antonio there are a few places spread out all across town but the one that I come to religiously is Oblate Cafe. It's a hole in the wall, it's a brightly colored place with images of food, roosters, cacti, Frida, and old chapels all over the place. The tables are all different, the chairs don't match and the mugs don't match, and all of that is A-OKAY because the service is friendly and the food is good good good. Hot and flavorful, but most importantly, it's consistent. Every time you come here you know you're gonna get good food, good service and maybe even make a friend. The tables are real close, you can't help but overhear others convos. Either way, you look past all the seemingly gruff exterior and you have a gem in the middle of the city. Told the lady at the register who took my order and she fought me on that . Said that is what I ordered but I don't even like huevos rancheros . I told her I will just take the order because I'm running late . It was only at that point when she said hold on I can fix the order . Needs better customer service, you're too busy talking to your coworker while taking my order that you made a mistake. You had a chance to fix it and give the customer what he paid for , but you want to argue that you're right . One good thing is that she made me feel at home . Went to Oblate this weekend with some friends. We wanted a chill breakfast with some good mexican food. The barbacoa was honestly good, and the tortillas were homemade, and the coffee was good too. The eggs were yummy, and the beans and papas were good. The service was just not the best. We asked about portions to see if we could split a plate, and the waitress told us it was a good size to split and then she brought us the tiniest plate of barbacoa I've ever seen. It was really good, don't get me wrong, but it was tiny. The ambiance was calm, and the place was not too loud but I don't think I'll be going back. read more

3 stars equals meh...very average. Came back after a great experience. Looking forward to a great second time, I walked in and I was the only one there. The staff looked at me like I was going to hold up the place. Not very welcoming this time. Had to ask if they were still open. The staff all looked at each other like who was going to deal with me. no better feeling To be fair the sign says open till 9 but the feeling is otherwise. The place is very clean. The menu says chips and salsa after 11am. So far I haven't been offered any. I feel like I'm an inconvenience here. The chips came out with the food and were sparse and disappointing. Red salsa was good though. My server mumbled " anything else?" I let her off the hook and just said no. She disappeared with the rest of the staff to the back. The enchiladas seem tough and the plate needs a lot of salt. Sadly so far this is not the experience I had last time. The service has not been great, everyone is doing side work. The tortillas seem home or at least locally made which is nice. Green salsa very sadly lacks flavor but brings the heat. I did finally get checked on and she was very nice. Turned off the open sign at 8:30ish, chairs being put up on the tables and the television was turned off I gotta admit I'm definitely feeling kinda rushed. To be fair maybe I just came at the wrong time. Going to write this up as such and give them another chance in the future. Final note I was checked on at the end of my meal by a nice server. They never disappoint us with the good tortillas, salsa, CG, bean and cheese, chorizo and _____, enchiladas, sweet tea, etc. And they have some of the best service around so go and try them out today.
