While they're known for their traditional Tex-Mex, their comfort food is just as impressive, and everything tastes homemade. The chicken fried steak is a standout: made with fresh steak (not frozen), perfectly crispy on the outside with a generous, juicy cut of meat inside. The crust-to-meat ratio is spot on. The hamburgers are hearty and satisfying, and the fish is cooked just right. On the Tex-Mex side, the picadillo is rich and flavorful, and the refried beans taste like they came straight from grandma's kitchen, and tortillas homemade. Don't let the exterior fool you. A neighborhood Mexican restaurant with a rough exterior but clean interior and very reasonable prices. I tried the chicken-fried steak after my waitress recommended it as one of their most popular items, but I found it average at best. The mashed potatoes were dry and crumbly, and the refried beans and flour tortilla were nothing special. Service was also quite slow despite only a few tables being occupied. Not a place I'd make a special trip for, especially with much better options like Garcia's Mexican Food just a few blocks away. read more

Disclaimer, ive never stepped foot inside the place. My coworker brings me breakfast tacos. The first few times was a papa ranchera. Im not a fan of those--usually, but it was amazing! Went for the first time for lunch on a Monday. It was $6.99 for a chicken fried steak plate. It was a large portion a very good! The meat went all the way to edge of the crust. It is a seat yourself kinda of place where pay at the counter. And FYI the parking is crazy. Definitely a great value for lunch. I'll definitely be back! read more

The Chicken Fried Steak at Peter El Norteño was recommended as one of the top ten CFS' in town by the San Antonio Express-News and it did NOT disappoint. The restaurant is a nondescript joint on Fredericksburg Road; definitely no frills. But it's very clean and the waitstaff were all professional and on-the-spot in their service. The Chicken Fried Steak was indeed good, though not really anything that would set it apart from most other CFS' you could get elsewhere. But I took advantage of the Tuesday special price and it was worth every penny. I plan on returning for the breakfast tacos, which I hear are also good. read more

This little neighborhood (Mexican) restaurant was the biggest little surprise of the month. I went in for lunch on a recommendation to try the chicken fried steak and WOW! I never would have thought this "bigger inside than it looks outside" place would even offer a CFS... then you realize it is priced at under $10 and comes with two sides! Great value for the meal. The Chicken Fried Steak was extremely tender and able to be cut with a fork. There was a good breading-to-steak ratio, and it was a good size too. I ordered the CFS with mashed potatoes and green beans. The mashed potatoes were very good and worth mentioning. The service was very friendly and the dining room was almost completely full. This would explain the lack of parking requiring having to park down the street. I don't find myself in this neighborhood often, but next time I do, I'll definitely think about stopping in again. read more

We went specifically for the children fried steak on a Monday. It had been highly rated in the SA Express-News. It was a great disappointment and certainly not the best I have ever had. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and cold as were the green beans. Won't be ordering that again! read more

This place is ALWAYS so busy, so it must be good, right? After three days of trying, I finally scored a parking spot and entered the building hoping it was worth the wait. Service was fast and efficient. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The crust was crunchy and perfectly seasoned. The beef was fork tender. The mashed potatoes were very tasty and obviously made from scratch. The obligatory roll was the only miss, a store bought lump of bland-tasting nothingness. But that is incredibly minor. Its ok definitely not in the top 20 best in SATX. Fajita plate. Huevo ala mex, pancakes with bacon and eggs and a bean and cheese three sweet teas and a lemonade was right around $45 but again just ok. The sweet tea and lemonade were pretty good though. Also if you walk in the place con el nopal en la frente and your smoking hot Irish wife expect the staff to stare and chisme like no other here! But hey its raza its expected que no? read more

It's my 1st time here. The place was packed. Parking can be challenging. Service was not on target. The server seemed to have forgotten to place our order and had us wait almost 40 minutes, while everyone around us was getting prompt service. The food was a bit bland for my taste. It's great for people with high blood pressure, tho. It's low in sodium. Good size portions. The Wednesday special is advertised at $5.99 with free tea, but it's actually $7. I went for the 1st time Monday. Not much parking but alot of space inside. I met a nice couple walking in ( Mr & Mrs Lorenzo Solis ) . They are regulars. I sat nearby. My waitress was a tall, shapely, statuesque young lady named Connie. She's from Torreon Mexico. She's very polite and speaks English and Spanish fluidly. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. It was good, though the steak was a little stringy. Still, overall experience was good. I will return. read more

The daily lunch specials here are amazing. We came here on a Friday where the lunch specials were chicken strips, flautas, or fish for $5.99. I went with the chicken strips and it came with three HUGE strips, French fries, and a large tea. The chicken was hot And fried nicely- it didn't have an overly oily flavor and tasted fresh. The gravy was a little bland so I added some pepper and it kicked it up a notch. You seat yourself for lunch- we were here before 1130 and most of the tables were already filled up. This place is super busy! And with the lunch specials they offer I can see why. We waited a good bit to have our drink order taken, but they were obviously busy and not intentionally being neglectful so it wasn't an issue. The food came out quickly. My update on Peter El Norteno... I gave them a bad rating a few years back an about a 18 months later. I decided to try and give them a chance after all I never complained about their food. My complain was the constant miss over charging me. Well it's a 100% on the math and it's consistent and I am very happy with them. Came here a couple times w a buddy for breakfast. It is the little neighborhood spot for a reason. I really get a small town feel here, everyone seems to know everyone. Really nothing to blow your socks off, just cheap, simple, consistent meals. The Servers are good here and seem to interact more with their clientele than I am used to seeing. 3 choices each day for Lunch specials at 5.99 a pop w Tea. This is my go to breakfast taco place. I'm not even kidding when I say the servers know my husband and me. The tacos are large with fresh tortillas, of course. It's the very definition of Mexican comfort food and puro San Antonio. Over the last two years, my husband and I have tried almost everything, but my go to are the enchiladas verdes and the bean and chorizo tacos. Bonus, they have great coffee too! read more

This place makes some of my favorite cheese enchiladas in town and their prices are very reasonable. Other items worth trying on the menu are their chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, chicken tenders and literally anything from the breakfast menu. When you get your plate you just know that it was made fresh for you. The parking situation is pretty awful as this place is constantly packed and really busy. Additionally, the atmosphere isn't too great which is why I am giving it 4 stars. If you're looking for good mexican food with good service, then I would highly suggest this place. read more

I found out about this gem some time back. All I can say is wow! I love this place. The tacos are good, environment is nice, and the prices are cheap. The bacon and egg tacos are made the way they're supposed to made, chopped bacon cooked and mixed in with the scrambled eggs. Most other Mexican restaurants just put scrambled eggs in the taco then add a strip of bacon, not here! Also the machacado tacos here taste really good. Tortillas are awesome, beans taste great, and the sweet tea is so refreshing. I'll keep on eating here and hope this place never changes! read more

A surprisingly nice place. The parking has a lot to be desired but once inside this little gem, it's much larger than expected. There's no mistaking what's on special on any given day because it's listed clearly. I went on a Thursday and had the Hamburger special. I usually split a hamburger with whom ever I'm with, but I ate the whole thing 'cuz I was hungry and it was delicious! I had my burger with the works (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayonnaise and mustard) I did have to ask for more mustard, but the taste and size of the burger was delectable! Their fries were so good! Great sweet tea also! I will have to restrain from wanting to go everyday to try their everyday specials! The prices of their specials are a great reprieve from the high prices of everything else in our lives nowadays! You won't be disappointed going to Peter El Norteno!!!! read more

Ordered chaupa plate to go. Paid around $7... perfectly reasonable for a plate of food. Did not receive a receipt, got home, realized they had in fact only given me an ala carte item and charged me for the entree. Upon calling, I was told I was given the latter. Ask for a receipt, check the box, and double check the prices if you visit this establishment. read more

This is it...the best breakfast tacos anywhere. I've been sampling all over and have found THE place. I've taken friends and they agree after asking, "Why didn't they find this place first?" Even the restrooms were impressive and reflected the same attention to detail found throughout the entire establishment. The food was outstanding. Every dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. This isn't your typical restaurant experience--the menu is creative, unique, and offers something different. You can tell a lot of thought goes into both the preparation and presentation of every plate. What really made the experience unforgettable, though, was the customer service. My waitress, Kreizon, was absolutely amazing. She was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely made me feel welcome throughout my visit. Great service can make a good meal even better, and she definitely elevated the entire experience. The outdoor dining area is also beautiful and creates a relaxing atmosphere that's perfect for enjoying a meal and taking in the surroundings. If you're looking for a restaurant that offers exceptional food, incredible ambiance, unique architecture, and top-notch customer service, Domingo is a must-visit. It had a great spicy zing in the back of the throat after every sip. Queso was... kinda plain. It might have been better with the add chorizo option. It was very thick. Shrimp cocktail was big, but we started fighting over the shrimp pieces. There was plenty of onion and tomato left over after the batttle. Pollo Asado was a great flavor and the chicken was juicy. Grilled squash that was on the side was good. Chicken enchiladas were good and had freshly sliced jalapeños, which is always a welcome detail. I wasn't able to taste the quesadilla but my daoughter said it was "really good". Fried Chicken sandwich had a great flavor and the bacon was actually pork belly if I'm not mistaken. Sadly there was more batter than chicken. The seasoned fries were delicious and crispy.

The meats were decent, the beans were amazing. The tortillas were just ok, as I felt like they were way too thick. They offered corn tortillas too, but I'm in Texas, so you get flour, not corn. We started…read morewith the Pan Fila Conchota combo that is a combination of the two that is 1/2 gallon of hot chocolate made using a base of Abuelitas with additional cinnamon, and cocoa along with something special. It was delicious! The concha was soft, buttery and flaky, with just the right sweetness. We took home the majority of it and it stayed nice and soft instead of turning hard like so many others. We decided to try several appetizers to go along with our concha to get a wider taste of their food than we would by just ordering a couple entrees. Let me tell you, this was a great idea! We ordered the Tosti-Ceviche Verde, Panela Asado, Mexican Street Corn, and their Spicy Bean Dip. The Ceviche Verde was excellent, the freshness of the fish and shrimp was wonderful with the chipotle mayo and avocado. We chose to have it on the salsa Verde Tostitos and it was all great combination. The Panelo Asado was a completely new dish for us and was extremely good with a savory flavor from the salsa Tlaquepaque that mixed well with the Panela cheese. Their tortillas though not made in house, are made for them and taste like mom made them. The Mexican Street Corn was great and had the perfect bit of char taste from the corn. It was creamy and flavorful, we did think it could use just a tad more lime juice though. The Spicy Bean Dip was very good. You can't go wrong with Oaxaca, Chorizo, and pieces of pork mixed with some mildly spicy beans. Our server was fantastic. She had great recommendations for us, and was quick with checking on our drinks and generally helping us throughout our dinner. The food was prepared quickly, was hot, tasteful and refreshing. We definitely will be going back, and recommend Pan Fila to all of you.
