We love our Saturday morning Barbacoa and pork chop tacos from Chapala Taco House. The young adults that work the register and phones are always professional and welcoming. Although this spot is easy to miss we love our to go ordering since its quick and totally affordable. read more

Stopped in for brunch since I was in the area. The food style is authentic Tex-Mex and delicious. The food came out fresh and hot! We ordered a couple breakfast tacos, a breakfast plate and my son had a Barbacoa torta. The tortillas were homemade and delicious!!! Friendly staff. Greasy spoon Tex-Mex spot! This place has some big portions, dishes covered in gooey cheese, refried beans with lard in it, and nice fluffy tortillas. I went for the Chilequiles plate- which is always a Tex-Mex favorite. It was covered in cheese, served up with tortillas, refried beans, and potatoes that are charred up nicely. The salsa verde was a bit on the hot side, and full of flavor. The prices were quite reasonable! I was happy to see the bill- I should be coming here more often. The portions are huge, and the food is good! The coffee was a bit on the weak side, but the service was good, and the singing cook in the kitchen had some good tunes. This place is Spurs proud! Go Spurs Go! They're huge fans and it seems like eating here is positive mojo for Los Spurs! read more

Really enjoyed coming with my family until recently. Noticed a lack of diligence in face covering and health protocols. The food is typically good- however, our last visit was different. "Hot plate" to me means it came out of the microwave, and that's kind of how it tasted. Not as fresh as usual. I still gave 3 stars because past visits were great! The service is normally friendly and the food is fresh. My main concern was servers walking around with their mask half off, or just wearing a plastic shield that is open on the top and bottom. Also saw employees in the back with no mask. Not sure if they have just gotten relaxed on face coverings or if it's just fatigue from wearing them every day. Either way, we walked out feeling concerned about our exposure - especially after one server coughed a couple of times while taking our order. Also noticed our server rubbing her face / nose before dropping off our plates. Totally could have just been allergies but it's a new reality we live in, where we have to be extra cautious and careful not to touch our nose, mouth, etc when interacting with others. Just didn't seem to take sanitation serious enough for me. Not sure when I will go back, that day, I said I would not. Maybe I'll give it another try in the future. read more

We used to come here on a regular basis when we lived right around the corner although my husband picked up tacos to go more often. Fast and Friendly. Homemade Tortillas! This visit I came in because I knew they had tamales and I had a craving so I decided to give them a try. Well the tamales were frozen so I decided to grab my usually Chilaquiles for a review while I wait for the tamales to steam. Even though the chips didn't look like much, they were perfect in flavor with an airy crispness. These were homemade! Two sauces of green and red with green being my favorite. The Chilaquiles with refried beans and sautéed potatoes with onions and peppers are a top contender for a repeat visit. Now for the tamales... Just ok... As much as I applaud them for making their own, it's not the perfect tamale that I am in search of... Thankfully the server packed up some green sauce for me which added a nice needed heat and I really appreciate her thoughtfulness. read more

If you aren't careful, you will miss it. That said, Chapala has some great breakfast tacos that are always freshly made and great tasting. Their salsa verde is extremely good as well and I always ask for extra to keep on hand. A great way to start off the morning when I have a random Friday off. Mayra is my girl - always smiling and happy. But everyone is nice and the food is always A+. In particular the omelette, breakfast tacos, lunch tacos and chicken tortilla soup! My only suggestion is the coffee could taste a bit better. read more

This is one of those little places that isn't necessarily doing something you've never [tasted] before; it's just that they're doing it just right. The tortillas are just right. The hot sauce is just right. The limonada is.....just...right. You've got the classics, and done well. You've got a clean, friendly atmosphere, with no-nonsense staff. My only complaint is the parking is a little weird, jammed onto a pothole-filled hill, but that's not enough to talk me down from my 5 stars. I haven't eaten my way around the entire menu yet, but I feel confident suggesting this is a place Goldilocks would take the three bears when they come for a visit. ¡buen provecho! read more

I've only been here once so far, but I think I'm in love with the salsa verde, and I'm not a salsa verde kind of guy. The flower tortillas were perfect, IMHO: just the right thickness, chew and flower-laden exterior. Chorizo had all the right flavors, and wasn't greasy one bit. Refried beans were (surprisingly) fresh tasting. Papas had as many onions, tomatoes and peppers as they did actual potatoes, and complimented the beans (and eggs, and everything else) really well. $5 credit card minimum can be a challenge to meet ;) read more

There's 2 good restaurants on this little strip but this one is my favorite. You wouldn't think it from the outside but this place has a lot of space on the inside. Restrooms are nice and clean. But on to the most important point of a review of this place is the food. The food here is amazing. I absolutely love the beans here too. Coffee is good. For cream they have the nondairy liquid creamer. It's not half and half but you can probably drink it black if you're not down as the coffee is that good. Gotta love the flour tortillas here too and don't forget the corn. The taco norteños, well be prepared as it also has bell peppers like a fajita plate so it's a little more stuff than what is listed on the menu just as a heads up is that's an issue. On the Olis taco the guacamole isn't just smashed up avocado, it has some lil onion in it too. There are sooo many choices to try so you can't really get bored and it should be enough meal choices for everyone. The barbacoa here is a good option too. Enjoy! read more

If I could rate negative stars, I would. Found hairs in three separate plates of food and instead of taking the plates away immediately, our waitress demanded to see where the hairs were and then proceeded to accuse us of putting the hairs in the food ourselves. We were nearly made to be forced to pay for contaminated food, but we expressed that it wouldn't be right to pay for food that we were unable to eat. Horrible attitudes, even worse customer service. Will not be coming back. Health inspector should pay a visit. read more

Ordered to go: 6 breakfast tacos (too many for two people), side of guacamole, and 2 coffees. Only $12.10 for all this, including tax. Can't beat the price, the delicious food, the fast and friendly service. Best taco house we've found in this part of town, bar none. read more

This restaurant is like the Tardis, completely different in the inside. Located in a sketchy strip center next to a massage parlor, you could easily head further down Austin Highway to Taco Cabana. Don't do it. Chapala is clean, inviting, and spacious inside. The food is great, portions generous, and prices reasonable. They have a variety of daily specials, usually three per day. The menu is standard TexMex, but more varied than most places. They have a great selection of breakfast tacos, in particular. The red salsa is delicious. The green is hot. One weak spot, in my opinion, is the tortilla soup. Although a generous portion, it's a bit bland. The Alhambra plate is a favorite: fajita meat, bacon, grilled onions and peppers, on top of rice with beans on the side, and cheese over the top. Huge plate for $8. Chapala has survived off the strength of the food and it's value in a neighborhood full of taco houses. Heck, there's one two doors down in the same center. Any place that can last near Alamo Heights next to a competing restaurant and a happy ending place must be good. Chapala Taco House is one of the best taco and TexMex places on the near Northeast side. read more

They have a great variety of tacos that I had a hard time picking what I wanted, so I ended up getting the beef fajitas. The plate was pretty average and lacked some flavor in my opinion. They serve the fajitas with rice and beans. I'm not a fan of beans, so I can't tell you how they were since I didn't touch them. The rice however was really good and finished it all. That's all I could say about the plate because the beef fajitas were just a little too stiff and I had a hard time just chewing through it. It's not something I'll ever order again but I would definitely give the place an other chance. Word of advice, order some tortillas! They're home made and really great. They have flour and corn ones. Their lemonade is really great too! read more

Finally tried this place, after passing many times while working, I decided to stop in. Have to go inside due to no drive thru. I tried the "Olis" & the "Quiero" tacos. Pure awesomeness. I loved it. Great combos in the tacos, homemade, fresh tortillas. Great priced. Just absolutely loved it. I will definitely be stopping in again. After hundreds, if not thousands, of trips past Chapala Taco House, today I found myself THERE - and their parking lot empty - when I was hungry for a late breakfast/early lunch, so I pulled in. The interior is cute and festive and clean - and decorated with a riot of pastel colors. Although they seem to fill a lot of "to go" orders, seating is plentiful. Near the register are several signs. One reads, "Minimum charge of $5 on credit cards"; another, "Take out containers or cups - 27 cents each". Yep: a Mom-and-Pop cafe`!! I tried a variety of menu items: first, a picadillo torta - slathered with mayo and guacamole; dressed with chopped tomato and shredded lettuce on a telera the diameter of a salad plate! It was rather like a sloppy joe, actually: not a distinctive flavor to the picadillo, but tasty just the same. The caldo de pollo, served with lime wedges and a choice of corn or flour tortillas (I chose corn - YUM), was much like my homemade chicken-vegetable soup - in other words, wholesome and satisfying. It contained cabbage, onions, squash, carrots, potatoes, and an entire chicken leg quarter....and was, of course, sprinkled with the requisite freshly-chopped cilantro. Good stuff. In addition to all of this food, I received tortilla chips, green and red salsa, and a side dish of rice....all of which were varying degrees of good. Prices are phenomenal: my meal - which contained enough food for at least two very hungry people (and no, I couldn't come close to finishing it) - cost less than $11....and that included a cup of coffee! The staff was on the ball: everything was quick, quick ,quick. When I departed - close to lunchtime - the lot was full and the place was bustling: made me really glad I'd gotten the jump on the lunch crowd! And that is, in honesty, the only real disadvantage to Chapala: their lot is tiny and a bit of a pain to negotiate when the restaurant is busy. read more

Chapala Taco House gets my breakfast and lunch business quite often. Monday through Friday they offer specials that simply can't be beat on taste and price. Red and Green sauces = Yummy! Service is some of the best I've encountered in San Antonio. Fresh brewed Ice Tea refills in a 'to go' cup adds value to the experience. Authentic Mexican recipes with killer service; what else could you be looking for in a Mexican Mom/Pop shop? Oh, and the Home Cooked Corn Tortillas' ROCK! ! Amazing food and service. I went on the recommendation of a friend who lives in the area, and left with nothing but praise for the place. The food is amazingly good, comparable to Thousand Oaks Cafe (one of my favorite Mexican food joints, but I go to the actual Thousand Oaks location) down the road a bit further. I ordered the Chilaquiles. The eggs were fluffy and buttery, and perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of jalapeno and other vegetables. I am not shy with jalapenos, and they aren't either, for a nice change of pace since I typically have to ask for them to enhance my dining experience. The tortillas in the dish were still crisp. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and salted. The salsa verde is quite tasty. This meal was so enjoyable that I am returning tomorrow to indulge again. Service was excellent. Food was promptly prepared and delivered, and coffee was filled without my cup ever being completely empty. Highest praise. read more

Worst service ever. Waited an hour for 6 simple breakfast tacos. They were extremely rude. Lost our order, didn't make it right the second time they had to ask what our order was. They were constant with business but only have like 8 tables in the restaurant and when I asked for a refund- they acted like I was out of my rights. In the end- we only had 5 of 7 tacos and I don't even want to open the bag, Bc I know they are wrong. Will never return. Don't bother. There are other bomb tacos places- who aren't A holes. They wouldn't even acknowledge how wrong it was or try to make it right. read more

Both the enchilada sauces, green and red, are amazing. Quite possibly the best I've had. Like everyone's said before, the corn tortillas are delicious. The waitresses are all super friendly. I haven't been here enough to be considered a regular YET but I've noticed other customers who must come in often and the waitresses remember names, children, and what you've been doing in your life. Overall you can just feel a nice warmth coming from the employees. Definitely recommend this place at least once but do watch out for the pot holes the parking lot is rather rugged. read more
