    Old Fashioned and Sazerac

Styled like an old clubby library or lounge, Devil's River offers comfortable booths and a great vibe. Drinks are made with their whiskies and are well prepared and tasty. We got a Sazerac and an Old Fashioned as they had run out of Vermouth and couldn't make a Manhattan (but seriously, what whisky bar runs out of Vermouth?)

Very large location with plenty of seating. They only serve their bourbon/whiskey - so don't come I thinking you can get something else. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. You can smoke cigars outside. There is no cigar smoking inside.

Very nice building both inside and out. Very becoming a tasting room. I got a flight which was quite good. The regular bourbon was my favorite which I bought a bottle of. The high proof (126) was extremely smooth but lacked any kind of character. The attendant was very friendly.

Killing time before a show at the Majestic, I stopped off at the Devil River Distillery for a cocktail and ordered an Old Fashioned. I got my drink and went out to the front patio where there was a one-man band playing some cool jams. The drink was good and the vibe on the patio was relaxing to match the music being played. It was fun to people watch as they strolled by the front patio while having some good conversation. I enjoyed my time here and look forward to coming back to try more of their spirits.

"The Devil went down to Georgia...." Well, in this case it was San Antonio. After an adventurous day out on the town my friend and I stopped in for a nightcap. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the striking crystal chandelier, and the pre-prohibition style bar adds to the charm. The place is quite spacious - there's a gift shop, upstairs seating, the distillery, a tasting room, and a speakeasy downstairs. You can also book a tour via their website. Devils River Distillery produces small batch whiskey. Their award-winning portfolio features bourbon, rye, barrel proof, and even flavors such as agave, cinnamon, & coffee. The cocktail menu offers classics and creative twists such as the Devil Rita, which is made with their agave whiskey. Sticking with the classics my friend ordered a Sazerac and I asked for a New York Sour. The bartenders take their craft seriously here and our cocktails were prepared with precision. We enjoyed the live music outside on the patio while sipping our delicious libations. I'd love to come back to take a tour and have a cocktail in the speakeasy. Happy Hour daily 4 - 6 pm

(From January, 2025) We found this spot on a Sunday in mid January after walking around downtown. With football being on, we needed a spot to post up for some cocktails while watching the Ravens/Bills playoff game. This was about a block from our hotel and upon realizing that, we decided to venture here and see what's going on. Walking in, there's plenty of space to move around with some comfortable seating along with an upstairs area. The bar is where you order your drinks; our bartender (I forgot her name) did an outstanding job of crafting our cocktails and gave us good ideas on what to order. My girlfriend ordered a devil's mule which she loved (she ordered a second one later) and I did a new york sour classic. Both were delicious and well crafted. I also ordered a Sin-Chata cocktail (cinnamon bourbon, honey, chocolate bitters, oat milk) upon seeing it presented; knew I had to try it and it was one bad-ass cocktail! Upon getting drinks, we ventured downstairs where there are individual lounge areas with separate tvs surrounded by assigned seatings and coffee tables. We were able to watch the game at one of the stations down there, snuggled on the couch sipping our drinks. We both loved the concept and wish more bars/spots would do this. You can also play board games there and they have video games they can set up for the tvs for groups. Or you can do watch parties for your Netflix/Max accounts. Pretty dope! Look forward to coming back here for more drinks and hanging out!

Devils River is a beautiful distillery located in the heart of downtown San Antonio. Upon walking in we were captivated by the enormous chandelier in the main room and were greeted immediately and welcomed to the bar towards the back of the room. Whether you'd like a flight to taste a variety of what Devils River has to offer or you'd like to sit and sip one of their unique cocktails, there's something on the menu to please every palate. The bar tenders are attentive and very accommodating. The coffee bourbon had the perfect amount of sweetness and balanced coffee flavor. The branded ice cube and pitchfork were a unique touch. There's ample seating upstairs with a Birds Eye view of the stills, but we chose to explore the speakeasy downstairs. We were transported back in time as we relaxed on the antique furniture and sipped our perfectly crafted cocktails in the dimly lit lounge. If we weren't catching a flight we would have left with a few bottles, but we will definitely be back the next time we are in town!

This location has both whiskey-based cocktails as well as good. We only had cocktails this visit. They have a speakeasy in the basement that can be rented out for private parties. Whiskey is not my go-to cocktail base but I really enjoyed the blackberry Devil's mule. I enjoyed it so much. I had two of them! We'd like to go back to try some of the food they have. We noticed that the chef came to the table of everyone who ordered food which I thought was a nice touch. When we arrived, we decided to order our drinks at the bar and then take them to a cozy seat in the corner. We were here the Tuesday before Christmas day, so it was not crowded at all which we much prefer. This place has a romantic vibe and classy vintage decor which we enjoyed. We want to stay downtown again next year before Christmas and look forward to coming back here next year or sooner to enjoy some more cocktails and try some of their food.

    Premium flight

Walking around Riverwalk and it felt like a bad version of a cheap amusement park... decided to return to car and saw this gem. Popped in, got the premium flight for a great price and relaxed for about 1 hour in a beautiful distillery just enjoy the incredible flavors.

This distillery is very cool! We did a private tour & tasting and had lots of fun. I tasted the rye, coffee, and cinnamon whiskey. I also ordered a cocktail that was made with their coffee bourbon. It was delicious. The tour was pretty short but I feel like I learned a lot about the process of distilling alcohol. The service was great!

Good ambiance, good food, and greater drinks with a nice selection of cigars. Co-workers and I stopped by this place due to convenience (near hotel) and sparked interest of the distillery on display. Happy we stopped by, as we had a great time after work with drinks, cigars. Rated a 4 only because their were drinks that were having to be adjusted because them being out of things. Such as the third rounds of Trident True they had no mints and put lemon wedges so adjusted after that to the Devils Mule. The staff was friendly and pretty welcoming. Definitely coming back.

Stopped by here to grab food and drinks during happy hour on Wednesday. Apparently they don't serve food on Wednesday. Not sure why, but we decided to stay and have a couple drinks. Everyone really enjoy the drinks and exploring the distillery. Head downstairs and find cornhole, and more seating. It was a cool spot for sure and I definitely enjoyed their different spirits. The flavored ones and the straight whiskey or bourbons. Looking forward to stopping in and trying their food along with some drinks sometime soon.

First time here and definitely not my last. Thanks YELP for the invite. The speakeasy is a hidden gem. Their drinks are amazing and all their staff were absolutely friendly and their service was great. We met some vendors with unique items.

Our other drinks were yummy too don't get me wrong as each of them has key components that made them taste amazing while I did forget the names just know that each one of them was yummy! Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. Whether any of you who are reading this know about the history of the Menger Bar and it's role in Teddy Roosevelt's assemblage of the Roughriders in this particular establishment or not the drink which he had was a mint julep. When I ask for that drink for which The past president was known to imbibe in they did not have the ingredients. That was a disappointment. Beyond my disappointment was the reality of a service establishment that had great personnel that is bartenders who were quite service oriented and given the activity in the bar where quite efficient. I mentioned this to suggest that the ingredients for a drink are as much, a managers, responsibly, bartender, and so in fairness to what I think was exemplary service I certainly did not want my personal disappointment to reflect on how good these bartenders were. The ambience is also wonderful. It is the period appropriate or appears to be appropriate and hence gives you the comfort of being able to visualize Teddy drawing together a group that eventually went on to Victory over the Spanish in Cuba. It is romantic and comfortable. The bartenders explained that the round table at which Roosevelt sat has been moved somewhere within the hotel. This is an experience not to be missed. Food came out in about 10 mins from placing my order. Not bad, not great. My rating on the bbq burger. They did not ask me how I wanted it prepared, it was pretty much well done. The bun was a little hard, almost stale. There was not much bbq sauce on the bbq burger. With all the toppings, I'd give the burger 5 of 10. The hard bread took away from it for sure. I always like to try just the patty without anything on it to see how restaurants prepare their patties. It was about what I expected for a well done burger. Not much flavor, it tasted like well cooked ground round. I'd give it a 3.5. The fries were so so, I like fries more on the crispy side. These were more like thick steak fries, soft and limp. They were seasoned with salt and pepper. Not bad, not great. The beer I had... had an odd smell. It tasted ok, but I think the glass itself may have not been the cleanest. Hoping I don't get sick from a dirty glass. The bartender was nice enough to let me try their frozen Irish coffee. It was surprisingly delicious, like a boozy ice cream.
