Our initial visit to this establishment presented some unique circumstances. On that occasion, the venue was exceptionally busy, and the sole bartender on duty informed us he was covering for an absent colleague. Despite the staff shortage, we placed a significant order for at least ten drinks. My husband had made a reservation for 6:00 PM. However, at approximately 7:30 PM, after we had already placed our drink order, a staff member informed my husband that our table reservation was only valid for two hours. Concerned about the impending two-hour limit and the delay in receiving our drinks, which had still not arrived by 7:45 PM, we inquired with our bartender about potentially canceling our order. He reassured us, stating that other tables were available should additional patrons arrive. Our subsequent visit, on Saturday, July 25, 2026, was solely with my husband. We arrived punctually, approximately five minutes before our 7:30 PM reservation. A female bartender directed us to a small, two-person table, despite the presence of two larger, seemingly more comfortable, unoccupied tables nearby. While initially assuming these larger tables might be reserved for a bigger party, the selection felt somewhat restrictive given the availability. Our seating unfortunately placed us adjacent to another patron who was using an additional chair to prop up her footwear, which contributed to an unpleasant atmosphere. The bartender then approached our table and asked if it was our first time, to which we replied it was not. She then asked if we knew what we wanted to order. We requested a brief moment to review the menu. However, we then waited for approximately fifteen minutes for her to return. Eventually, my husband had to actively call her over to place our order. Our initial drinks arrived after another ten to fifteen minutes. Subsequently, my husband attempted to catch the bartender's attention to order another round and request water. However, she was engaged in a lengthy conversation, estimated at ten minutes, with the neighboring patron and proceeded to walk past our table without acknowledging us. This extended period of being overlooked led to considerable frustration for my husband, who then felt compelled to approach the main bar directly to place our order and obtain water from a different bartender. It was only after this that the initial female bartender finally approached our table, asking if we needed anything. Considering the relatively small size of the establishment and the fact that there were only three occupied tables at the time, the level of inattentive and delayed service was particularly disappointing and, frankly, perplexing. read more

The Study at Dean's is such an amazing experience, it is definitely so much more than a bar. It's a cozy bar area beyond the courtyard of Dean's thst is established around literature. The menu tells a story, and all of the signature drinks are based on writings. The bartenders do more than mix drinks. each of the signature drinks are a true presentation.. if you're looking for something more than just an average bar or speakeasy. this is an amazing place. I recommend reservations because it's small but it's a wonderful experience after dinner or for a happy hour. They definitely focus on drinks, but do offer some bites. read more

We have visited this speakeasy twice, and each time has been fantastic. Arie, our bartender, even remembered my fiancé and me from a few months ago, which made the experience feel personal and welcoming. There are a ton to choose from, but I have to say this is the coolest speakeasy I've been to in San Antonio so far. The Great Gatsby theme inside is a very cool vibe and the way that the bartenders give you an experience with your drinks is second to none. They pair the drinks with elegant displays, aromatics, and even books that help tell the story of the creation of the drink. Highly recommend checking them out, and order different drinks so you can get a full experience!! The "cigarette" in the picture is actually an in-scent that pairs an aroma with the drink I ordered. Came here to try out the new happy hour that I saw on Instagram. From 4-6 on weekdays you can get complimentary bites with the purchase of a cocktail. The options are limited to about 4 appetizer options and they are petite, but delicious. We made a reservation and I recommend you do as well, since they did start filling up. The decor is stunning and the cocktails are expertly crafted. I tried three different drinks and each one was really well balanced. The syrups are house made and the flavors really shine through. I talked to the bartender about the specialty drinks and chose some based on her descriptions, since I didn't want anything too sweet. The Study at Dean's is a must for all speakeasy and craft cocktail lovers! Last weekend I was online looking for a place with open reservations and found The Study at Dean's. I had never heard of them but since my husband loves craft cocktails decided to give it a try. We arrived to the main restaurant (Dean's Steakhouse) and the hostess lead us through the restaurant and across a private patio where The Study is located. Frankly, I would've never guessed this place existed if I hadn't find it online. The bar is like any typical speakeasy, with an intimate vibe and a small staff. Their cocktail menu is very unique and they have a menu which is reserved only for The Study and you cannot get at Dean's. I no longer drink so I cannot give you all my feedback on their craft cocktails, but overall the experience was really nice and my husband loved his cocktail. They did offer to prepare a mocktail for myself, but I decided to pass on the offer. I do wish they start to offer zero proof beer and wine, for those of us that don't drink, specially since the bar across from the restaurant does carry non-alocholic beer. Overall a great experience and would definitely bring back friends and family to this amazing bar. read more

I low-key created this Yelp page, in hope of remembering to write the Yelp review to be first to review. Well, now it's been several months since my visit so I snooze, I lose. Oh well. When you think the Hotel Kimpton, the newest hotel to just open at the time, was out of amenities, they throw you a speakeasy, which was difficult to navigate to and we needed to be escorted there. You have to walk through their restaurant through their outdoor seating to get to another building where the speakeasy is. Besides the interior design, which is fantastic, I really love the creativity of the drinks. There's thought put into every drink and what inspired the creation of the drink, mainly books (hence The Study). Can't remember the the drink name, but it was inspired by Huckleberry Finn (or Tom Sawyer) and they even lit a cigarette that came with the drink. I later found out that it was an incense and not an actual cigarette. The bartenders are great to interact with and I would highly recommend checking them out, regardless if you're staying in this hotel. read more

My girlfriend was there a few weeks ago. At first, I didn't like that I had to pay for parking, but since we were downtown, it was expected. Walking in was a bit underwhelming since it was empty. We had just enjoyed a great evening at Dean's when we crossed the courtyard and saw what looked like a beautiful spot to sit and have a cocktail. Only one other couple was in the area, and the server was attending to them. Then she walked away from us. She came back and brought them their drinks, then walked away again. We tried waving to her, but she pointedly ignored us. When she came back a third time, I called to her and asked if she could take our order. She frowned at us and said with major attitude, "We are reservation based. If you don't have a reservation, I don't wait on you." Then she turned and marched into the bar. No "I'm sorry, but you need to make a reservation" or any kind of explanation. Just lousy attitude. We left. We won't be coming back to Dean's. read more

We had a very rocky visit here. Came for a friends birthday drinks. Ordered a glenlevit 25 and another drink and when they were brought out were told the reservations were messed up and we needed to leave our table for a larger party. We also waited for 30-40 minutes for drinks and when we asked for the check, waited for the bartender to make a group of 5-10 people's drinks who showed up after we asked for the check. This all sounds bad right? Well the reason I highly recommend this bar is the way management handled the issues. Nick the Manager in Deans was an absolute gem. Gave us a full tour of Deans & the study. It's hard to find real luxury in San Antonio and the Kimpton has nailed it. All the staff tonight was pleasant and friendly! The location is beautiful and makes you feel like you have stepped into a Las Vegas luxury resort. Room rates are not outrageous, despite the quality. Update: Had to come back with my friend two days later. He loved the ambiance and was blown away by this cozy little corner of the world. I really shouldn't even be telling y'all about the Study, because now I won't get a reservation lol. Carolina was our server and her bubbly personality just added to an exceptional evening. My favorite gentleman got the smoked old fashioned and I got A Visit from Wonka, best described as dipping dots with alcohol. Both were presented with panache and the show was half the fun. The smoked old fashioned was delicious. I don't remember the type of bourbon used but trust me, you'll love it. The Wonka was a delight. Great for lightweights like me. The bubble on top disappeared with a pop when touched with my spoon, underneath a chocolaty wafer was an assortment of liqueur flavored ice cream balls (think Dippin Dots) that made a nice flavor combination. The staff acknowledged that they have passed complaints on to management with no results. Inexcusable since these doors can be adjusted to self close quietly.
