Take me to the underground to a hidden place next to the river walk! It's a speakeasy so you shouldn't notice it right away but if your looking for it go to the back parking lot of where the address takes you close to the river walk look at the building that's right next to the parking lot a bit away from the road then look below and you'll see some tables and a door go down the stairs to get inside! They had a bunch of different cocktails inside lots of unique options and some not so much but where it was all about was the specials one in particular the Dunkle Sandwich as it tasted like Peanut butter and jelly like it was soo good up there with one of the best shots I've ever had soo flavorful and just good like this was by far my favorite thing I drank this night! Our other drinks were yummy too don't get me wrong as each of them has key components that made them taste amazing while I did forget the names just know that each one of them was yummy! On this particular night they had a mentalist wondering around doing magic he was fun and added to our evening here so that was a nice touch! Our bartender was awesome and quick to get us our drinks and I must say everything was mixed very well! A bartender at the Esquire told us about this speakeasy, so we decided to embark on a 1 mile walk down the river walk. It was tricky to find, with 2 other locals helping us find the front door. We were hot, sweaty and thirsty, but it was totally worth it! It's a dimly lit room with a lit up wall of 1700 spirits. John was our master bartender. Bartender probably isn't the right term. He was an expert mixologist and also knew a lot about a large variety of spirits. He was impressive, professional, and fun. We thoroughly enjoyed cocktails and whiskey poured neat from a variety of different bottles. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at Bar 1919. GO DOWNSTAIRS! The doors are unmarked, black glass doors. The drinks are delicious and the vibe is very chill. We went at opening and the tables were pretty sticky, which made it obvious that they aren't refreshing their cleaning buckets frequently enough. Food is not offered here, but I don't think you'd want to eat there anyway since their inspection rating was a 51% Fail (didn't see the signs until we were walking out). Don't worry- there's plenty of food at all the restaurants in the shopping district. The drinks were well-crafted and delicious. That Wild Duck drink seriously tastes like the liquid version of poutine fries! It sounds crazy when you're reading the menu, but it definitely slaps. read more

This bar almost feels like a speakeasy with how hidden and unassuming it is from the outside. I would never have suspected a bar as cool as this was on the inside of this building! The entrance is on the basement level of a shopping center so you have to take the stairs down. The individuals that work, there could be a little more gracious in terms of their racial profiling. I went in with a group of Latinos and it was alarming how we were racially profiled as a group. We went in acting as normal patrons and we were told that we were too intoxicated for the situation, but there was no action that was made by anyone in the group to justify that we were overly intoxicated for the sake of having a normal experience at this location. I have been coming here for a very long time, and I appreciate the care that the bartenders take for patrons however, I was very offended that when I came in with a group of Latino patrons, they said that we were too intoxicated to be served. Whenever you go here just know that it will be a good vibe, however, if you walk in with the wrong group of people you may be put to experience a weird situation like I was. read more

Dropped by Bar 1919 on a Monday while visiting San Antonio TX. Had read online that this was a speak easy bar. I agree this is a bar and it is a bit hidden with no sign on the door so you need to look you the numbers 1919 in order to find the entrance but while we were there it was NOT quite. We entered and decided to sit at the bar as several of the small tables were taken. We did get lucky as it was still HH on a Monday. But the bar was loud and it did not feel like a speak easy as most people were not speaking easy. So we placed our drink order and the bartender asked for a CC for our tab(they keep your card till you close the tab). The drinks were ok, not great nothing special so we sat for a while talked drank our drinks while deciding where to go next. I recommend you go here so that you can say you have gone to Bar 1919. Let me take you back to August 2020. I feel enough time has passed to share this incident. As a frequent cocktail enthusiast who has visited many bars across the country, I have developed a good sense of what makes a great bar. Many people have asked why I haven't been to 1919 or posted about it. Here's my story. On August 5, 2020, I decided to celebrate my wife's birthday with a night out. After visiting a few bars, I wanted to take her to Bar1919 to try one of their fusion drinks. It was a slow night during the COVID-19 era, yet we found ourselves there, ready to enjoy some savory cocktails. We sat at the bar and were greeted by the bartender. My wife immediately asked for a Dos Equis dressed, which led to some playful banter between us. I jokingly commented on her ordering beer at a cocktail bar, and she responded that it was her birthday and she could order whatever she wanted. I was slightly perplexed, but it was her special day, and ultimately, she didn't get her fusion drink. During our exchange, my wife decided to use the bathroom. A couple behind us, with their canine companion, had been eavesdropping on our conversation about cocktails versus beer. The female followed my wife into the bathroom, while the male raised his voice at me, claiming my tone was inappropriate and that I shouldn't talk to my wife that way. Initially, I wasn't sure he was addressing me. Without turning to face him, I told him to mind his own business and to leave us alone. I didn't appreciate the intrusion into our conversation. When my wife returned, she seemed surprised and told me that the woman had offered to call the police on me, which my wife dismissed. While my wife was in the bathroom, I asked the bartender for a second drink. A few minutes later, he approached me and asked us to leave shortly after serving my drink and presenting the bill. I asked why, and he said I was being inappropriate to my wife. I explained that we were just bantering about her order. My wife, already uncomfortable with the place, became upset. I expressed my frustration, stating that the bar was not to our liking, and began to leave. The door, equipped with a gas shock mechanism, allowed only a small space to exit. As I left, a barback accused me of slamming the door, which was impossible due to its design. As I continued to walk out, the barback threatened to call the police, and I told him I would wait. While I was walking up the steps, the manager shone a flashlight in my eyes, telling me I needed to leave, despite the fact that I was already doing so. Apparently, I have been banned from both Bar 1919 and Rock & Rye. In September 2020, my wife and I decided to visit Rock & Rye for some drinks. Within five minutes of sitting down, the manager approached me, asking if I was the person in a photo. I confirmed my identity, and he reiterated that I was not allowed in their establishment. This manager was the same person who had asked me to leave Bar 1919 in August. I requested to speak with the owner, but the manager refused, instead giving me a business card and stating that the owner would not intervene. I tried to explain the banter between my wife and me, but the manager interrupted, suggesting I needed a history lesson on Prohibition-era speakeasies, which also served beer. I clarified that this wasn't about history; Bar 1919 is known for its cocktails, not a Dos Equis dressed that can be ordered anywhere. My wife and I then decided to leave. As avid patrons of various establishments in San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, my wife and I appreciate and often seek out the best cocktails. We are known for spending generously at these venues. While I cannot fault Rock & Rye for the quality of its cocktails, the manager's handling of this situation was inappropriate and unprofessional for someone in his position. read more
