This is a great little hidden gem of a cocktail bar tucked just inside the Gunter Hotel! Such a cute vibe and great drinks. Service was a bit slow as there was only one bartender on shift, but he was friendly and really on top of things. A horrible place, they have the worst food, zero service, and the bartenders hate you for whatever reason. I couldn't believe the hatred I got from the bartenders, Rickey tried to be Samuel like was trying to pretend to be him. I just wanted a drink, but the bartender was trying to accuse us of guilty by association. I went there recently, and 30 police officers were there. I am not sure why, but I guess it was a raid that happened a week ago. Its unfortunate because it was the first time we went, and they kicked everyone out. read more

This bar is difficult to locate. It's inside the hotel. They have a very limited, pedestrian beer selection & an awful singer with guitar singing gross 90s songs. I was in San Antonio for just one night for a concert, and I read that Bar 414 has one of the best happy hours in town. Stopped by and tried to order 2 food items, but they were out of the crab cakes. Bummer. Had the biscuits and brisket for $5 and alllllmost got the Prohibition wings, but I wasn't prepared to pay $8 for that. Also had a $5 Old Fashioned, which was pretty perfect. The food was just OK... more like pulled pork than brisket. But it filled me up with just the one dish. Really wish I got to try the crab cakes as that was one of the reasons I chose this spot. 2 words - Old Fashioned. MAN they are good! I was staying at the hotel they are connected to and walked in and was pleasantly surprised by the bar. The drinks that the bartenders make are excellent. The bar food is just OK - I'd honestly go somewhere else, but you've got to come back for the drinks. Everything is handmade and super fresh - but that all comes at a price. I believe the Bulleit Rye Old Fashioned was 9 dollars with a 3 dollar upcharge. So kinda pricey but the quality was worth it. read more

Went to KRTU night. Got a couple of raffle tickets, didn't win sad face :( but I brought about 5 of my friends with me and i'm sure someone one that I knew. I think the food selection is OUTSTANDING. Saw someone eating a shrimp poorboy. There is a piano bar and a little music goes a long way as your sipping on your old fashioned. Keep an eye out on their facebook for the musical performances and events like the free beer sampling night I attended. Ranger creek had $5 dollar beer. Pretty awesome beer. They have large TV'S, this is a great place to pre-game before going to a show or performance downtown as well! read more

Was pleasantly surprised to find a prohibition style bar in my hotel. I ordered the Big Daddy. Flavorful, stiff but not too stiff. A large block ice cube ensured my drink wasn't watered down in 5 minutes so I could sip and enjoy it. read more

Hmmm... I think I got lured in by a joint intended to attract visiting Midwest businesspeople, in town for a conference. Was excited to experience the purported music history of the place (Robert Johnson, virtually the godfather of Blues, is storied to have holed up in Room 414 of The Guenther - downtown hotel which houses the bar - for a couple days many moons ago and recorded some jams.) Other than some some images of RJ on the walls though (and apparently all generic stock photos, none involving SA or the hotel), there's not really any nod to him or the fairytale hotel-stay.... Whompsville. Bartenders were supernice, though. And my drink (Westside Water? Tastes like a very cucumbery, very balanced margarita) was superdelicious, albeit 12 Flippin' bucks. Don't make the mistake, as I did, of paying $15 to park (on a Wednesday night, at that...dang son!) down the block... Valet park at Guenther, and Bar 414 validates - free, woo! I came upon this place by accident. I was strolling the town waiting for a friend of mine before we saw Carol King at the Majestic (quite a lovely show). But some friends are just always late, and I should have known better than to show up early, so I had some time to check out a bar and ended up here. I opened the door to the freakin' cupboard from Narnia, as I was thrown into a small little tavern with a finely dressed man with his greasy, curly mustache. The 50s were back, and I had just walked into this quiet, little private bar where a man can just be a man. The blues and jazz created an authentic feel to the place. I was rather impressed with the relative silence of the place and the lavishly polished leather seats, remarkable floor-plan and it's impressive ambiance. This place is proper and deserving a visit, and there I was in my finest for the show, so I fit right in with my rockports gliding on the floor. I took a seat and ordered me a couple of proper drinks. There was only one person manning the whole bar, but the dimly lit bar did possess beauty. The man in the stache watched my drink like a hawk, and he would not see that I would be let down, this was a hard working man who knew his craft and made perfectly balanced drinks of likes I've not tasted much in these past few months. The simplicity in his talent really gave this place the extra shine that you'd expect for such a place. Sadly, all good things come to end, when 15 jocks walked in sounding off like a mini-pep rally, poor taste, so sad. The man with the mustache was flushed in gentlemen-like fury, but he was a man of class and his hands went to work as he took the time to expertly mix drinks. Despite not being able to place another round of drinks, his magic was impressive for those with keen eyes. No fault of the bar, this place is a diamond. Will revisit, possible 5 star in the near future. read more

Service leaves a lot to be desired. Came in that door on St. Mary's was open and it was freezing. I was the only customer and was told oh it's not that cold in that corner when I asked for the door to be shut. We ended up staying but had to request service. When wanting to order my serving drink stood at the bar while the bartender scrolled through his phone. Placed my glass on the bar, ignored it. A small bar in the Gunter Sheraton Hotel. It looks like they are set up for live music, or at least a piano player, but didn't have it while I was there on a Thursday night. The soundtrack was blues and jazz, not so loud as to make conversation difficult. It's intended to have a speakeasy feel, but for some reason--which I can't put my finger on--didn't really work. Maybe it was the layout, which is mostly communal tables and benches instead of small tables. They could put little nooks along the sides, which I think would improve the ambience. Also, the two big screen TVs give a sports bar ambience, which doesn't fit with the rest of the motif. The bartender could also have garters instead of what looks like a Sheraton banquet uniform. I think the place has a lot of unfulfilled potential. Especially since it's a couple blocks from the River Walk, not on it, I suspect a more complete speakeasy feel would be a useful draw for people who are not hotel guests. Excellent craft cocktails. My old fashioned was top notch, with a single large cube of ice. My sazerac was also excellent. The bartender was courteous but distracted. I didn't eat, but the food menu looked good. A great choice when Market on Houston is closed--which is the the same hotel but shuts down early. Not all that it could be, but still a nice place for a drink in downtown San Antonio. read more

This is definitely a cool little joint to just go chill, throw back a drink, and listen to some blues/jazz lightly playing. I feel like a lot of people are staying at the attached hotel. The drinks are good, but again, nothing like bar 1919 to me. I've gone to see friends perform live. The service is ok cuz it can get busy, but idk, nothing special about this place in my opinion. I wouldn't not go again if people wanted to go, it just wouldn't be my first choice. This bar is inside the Sheraton Guenther Hotel. It's nice to see that they kept with the tradition in the bar, especially when you see how the destroyed the classic look of the hotel lobby. The bar name to the drinks are inspired by Robert Johnson, bluesman, who stayed at the bar while recording. We came here on a Saturday night and it was somewhat busy but were able to get a table. There was an acoustic guitar duo playing a good selection of classic rock. The bartenders were fast and friendly and would even come to the table to check on drinks. As far as hotel bars go, this is definitely one of the better ones in downtown. The prices are higher than most bars downtown but it's to be expected in a hotel. read more

We walked in here randomly on our way back to our cars and it was such s cute place. The bartender was awesome. I asked for something fruity with vodka and he made me this surprisingly awesome drink. We stumbled onto this hidden gem one day. It's a speakeasy setting much like Bar 1919. Bartenders were very great and happy hour prices were super low. We only had drinks but they had food items on their happy hour as well. We have been back a couple of times and each time their drinks have the same consistency- very impressive! It's like stepping into a time capsule here! The bar here isn't marked very well from the exterior. I didn't even know it was there until recently! Once you step in, it takes a while for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. It's a dimly lit cocktail bar with lots of great places to sit and relax or have a few cocktails. They focus on prohibition era cocktails. I translate that as "strong" cocktails. I had their signature drink, a 414. It's a rum based drink made with nutella and crushed crepes are placed on the rim of the glass. It's incredibly strong, but tasted divine! They also serve some bar food, which is beyond any bar food I'd had. So much thought went into their food- you gotta try the chicken pibil. It's served up on something that looks like a mini-puffy taco. Om nom nom! They also have these oyster shots that are served up in something like a bloody mary. Beyond delicious. I could shoot those all day. I enjoyed the decor in here. The 414 is paying homage to blues legend Robert Johnson who recorded his most famous album in room 414 of the hotel. The bar staff was helpful, but some of the drinks can take quite a while to prepare. I guess you have to wait for a good thing! There's valet parking available, but I opt for the city owned parking garage that's up St Mary's. read more
