Slightly off the beaten path but well worth it. A hidden red door under a cigar shop leads you to the Backroom bar. Very speakeasy looking, so cool - offering just drinks. Up front is a small restaurant where you can get food and drinks from the mixologist in the Backroom bar. Drinks were good but they don't like it if you want to alter one of their signatures. Service was friendly and efficient. The food however was amazing the charcuterie board was delicious. The mixture of cheeses and meats with homemade jam on the most flavorful crostinis. I first always try a small taste of everything one at a time to get the distinct flavor prior to mixing up a combination of all the flavors at once. Despite being concerned that pizza anywhere won't compete with pizza from home we decided to try one of their speciality pies - Pancetta. It was amazing crispy pancetta with grilled onions and mozzarella on a thin crispy crust. Each piece was finger licking good. This is a must see and experience!!

The bartender Carlos was amazing, gave a quick tutorial on Mezcal. Mixed up great drinks. The Mezcal Old Fashioned was great. Jose Alejandro was attentive and kept the water flowing. You must try the barbacoa pizza, great recommendation from Carlos. Definitely will be back!

The Backroom Bar is literally a great hidden gem. If you've never been here before you might walk past it once or twice (guilty) so don't be afraid to ask directions lol. The bar is in the backroom and has a great ambiance to the place. All the bartenders I've interacted with have all been friendly and can make great cocktails. On this venture, I tried the cucumber margarita and my standard Old Fashion. The cucumber margarita is served chilled with a rimmed cocktail glass and it's delicious. You should try it. They make their Old Fashions with Rye whiskey so that is why I like coming here. They make it great every time and this time was no different. Overall, if you are in the South Town area and want something off the beaten path then this is the place for you. P.S. if you like wine or cigars then you can either go around the corner or up the stairs to visit their sister locations. Great options!

This is one of the few bars open at 3pm around Southtown on a Saturday. We were looking for a quick drink and a good time and the Backroom Bar didn't disappoint. The bar is small and has chairs around. We ordered an old fashioned, Pineapple Express and a cantarito which were all very good. Drinks are pricey but there's a lot of detail that goes into making each drink.

This place is nestled between S Presa and S Alamo Streets. You can actually enter from two places...either through the courtyard for the Pipe Corner at S Alamo or via the red door with the neon lit "COCKTAILS" sign and a bull wall mural at S Presa. This would be the true backdoor backroom bar entrance...not well trafficked and saves you a walk around the block of it is cold outside! The cocktails are well made and the bar staff is always nice and sociable. Beer is also at an affordable price at under $5 and there are also some craft beers on the menu too. Usually it is staffed by one bartender throughout the week, but they have a couple more on the weekends. Ive found the busyness of the patio crowd usually indicates how crowded it is inside the backroom bar. I have never had a problem getting a drink and I prefer the low-key setting. Typically there is not a cover charge compared to the more hyped up Bar America just a few doors away. It is a great place to bring friends outside the downtown touristy area. You can also buy and enjoy a smoke bought from the Pipe Corner locates up the stairs. Occasionally there is live music featuring some jazz or rock band out on the patio, so it really has a lot to offer!

Drinks are great. Def real mixologists. My friend got the carajillo, I got the old fashion and we got the pineapple spicy tequila shots. ALL we perfect (which is normally rare for my friends and I). Ambiance is great, staff is friendly. Space is a little small so I recommend small groups like 3 or less. We will be back.

I could stay in this place all night (and I admittedly did)! I visited with a friend of mine for a quick drink and immediately knew this was my type of spot. Dim lighting, cozy bar/seating, good music and tons of tequila with bartenders who knew all about them. The first time I stopped by I was in a slight rush but I came back with my boyfriend about a week later and he had the same sentiments that I did about it! With that said we came back the following night with a few more friends and stayed pretty much until the bar closed - don't judge! If you're looking for a chill place to grab a great drink downtown, look no further!

So we had planned to go to QPV but due to some electrical issues they had to close the restaurant. However the bar was open & we were able to still order from the restaurant, the bartender was very accommodating able to fill our cravings for our favorite pizza La Mexicana. Service was great and loved trying the Mexican old fashion.

Words can't describe how amazing this place is. Great place to sit outside and enjoy a cigar, the drinks were unbelievable!! Claudio walked us through the entire night making us 6 different and creative cocktails. Claudio was the cherry on top of the great night we had. This place has it all, don't miss out!

Hidden in plane sight, the space immediately sets the tone with flickering candlelight, dark wood tables, low conversation, and an atmosphere that feels equal parts library, lounge, and classic speakeasy. Every detail appears to have been carefully considered, from the leather-bound menus to the vintage-inspired décor. The cocktails were exceptional. Each drink was beautifully presented and perfectly balanced, with fresh herbs, citrus, and an obvious attention to craftsmanship. One of the things I appreciated most was the pace of the experience. Nothing felt rushed. Instead, the entire evening encouraged guests to settle in, enjoy their company, and savor every sip. The dim lighting, glowing candles, and quiet elegance create the feeling that you've discovered a well-kept secret that only a few people know about. *The Study* isn't just a place to have a drink--it's a place to disappear for a while. If you appreciate speakeasy culture, expertly crafted cocktails, and an intimate atmosphere, this spot deserves a place on your list.

Our initial visit to this establishment presented some unique circumstances. On that occasion, the…read morevenue was exceptionally busy, and the sole bartender on duty informed us he was covering for an absent colleague. Despite the staff shortage, we placed a significant order for at least ten drinks. My husband had made a reservation for 6:00 PM. However, at approximately 7:30 PM, after we had already placed our drink order, a staff member informed my husband that our table reservation was only valid for two hours. Concerned about the impending two-hour limit and the delay in receiving our drinks, which had still not arrived by 7:45 PM, we inquired with our bartender about potentially canceling our order. He reassured us, stating that other tables were available should additional patrons arrive. Our subsequent visit, on Saturday, July 25, 2026, was solely with my husband. We arrived punctually, approximately five minutes before our 7:30 PM reservation. A female bartender directed us to a small, two-person table, despite the presence of two larger, seemingly more comfortable, unoccupied tables nearby. While initially assuming these larger tables might be reserved for a bigger party, the selection felt somewhat restrictive given the availability. Our seating unfortunately placed us adjacent to another patron who was using an additional chair to prop up her footwear, which contributed to an unpleasant atmosphere. The bartender then approached our table and asked if it was our first time, to which we replied it was not. She then asked if we knew what we wanted to order. We requested a brief moment to review the menu. However, we then waited for approximately fifteen minutes for her to return. Eventually, my husband had to actively call her over to place our order. Our initial drinks arrived after another ten to fifteen minutes. Subsequently, my husband attempted to catch the bartender's attention to order another round and request water. However, she was engaged in a lengthy conversation, estimated at ten minutes, with the neighboring patron and proceeded to walk past our table without acknowledging us. This extended period of being overlooked led to considerable frustration for my husband, who then felt compelled to approach the main bar directly to place our order and obtain water from a different bartender. It was only after this that the initial female bartender finally approached our table, asking if we needed anything. Considering the relatively small size of the establishment and the fact that there were only three occupied tables at the time, the level of inattentive and delayed service was particularly disappointing and, frankly, perplexing.

Update to first review below, rating updated from a 3 to a 5 star (drinks & bartender would get 10+…read morestars if we could rate that high): Saturday night: Went back for after dinner drinks at the Downstairs (a "speakeasy" throwback, look up the history of the place to see why). Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
