A little expensive, but worth it. You are surrounded by nicely dressed people. Service is excellent. They are capable of making most craft cocktails, if not all. We had dinner plans at Bonhanan's Steak House and heard they had an amazing bar with Derrick, being their amazing bartender, so we stopped in about an hour before dinner to enjoy sitting and sipping at his bar. He was quick to greet us, we told him we heard good things and he asked what we liked in the way of spirits and flavors. He then was off to make a couple of outstanding cocktails, some of the best we've had! This place get busy and packed, so get there early if you have dinner reservations elsewhere to ensure you have time to sit and enjoy your cocktail or wine. Excellent drinks, service, and atmosphere. You don't have to have a reservation at the restaurant or anything to just be able to come in and enjoy the bar and drinks which is nice. Came here as a first stop to start the night and had a great time. The drinks were smooth, expertly crafted and I left feeling good. It is a bit on the pricier side but you are also at a premium steakhouse place. I always enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the bartenders make drinks and interact with them. They are very knowledgeable here and can make you practically anything you would want. Didn't get to try any of the food the bar area offers this time but good to know for next time! You are able to order small bites from a select menu. There is also loungier seating with comfortable looking chairs. Definitely one of the nicer bars downtown. I will be back! read more

This is not a normal lively SA riverwalk and I love it for that! They have unique craft cocktails, an extensive wine list, beer, liquor (and more) as well as a unique bar food menu, different than that of the restaurant upstairs. On this particular visit, I was on a mission to get the drink that would also get me their special fiesta medal. (Sorry people, fiesta is now over so you'll have to wait til April 2019 to get one with your drink order!) The drink was made with bourbon, honey and (something else) with a very large ice cube. Perfect for sipping and not overly strong. Great drink! In addition to that drink, I ordered the duck bacon flatbread, which I've had before. Let me tell you, that duck bacon flatbread alone makes me want to come back here. The combination of salty duck bacon with the creamy cheese and sweet pecans all on a flatbread is something I will day dream about later. This place isn't cheap but if you want an experience at a very classy, low key place right next to the riverwalk, this is the place for you. read more

Bohanan's is already our favorite restaurant in San Antonio, TX. (It's also the best steakhouse in the city). The Bar is just as good if you're looking for a lighter commitment. The menu is smaller of course but of the same high quality as the main restaurant. It's walk-in and first-come -- no reservations. This place is perfect on a late weekday afternoon as a place to relax after work with a little sophistication. It opens at 5pm Tues-Fri and is best in those initial hours when there is a smaller crowd. Since it is more casual there is less of an obligation to dress up so it's fine to go straight from work. Conversely it would also be great as a late night stop for small bites and a quick drink. The Bar is one of the few gems in the city that has a timeless and romantic nostalgia (think Downstairs at the Esquire or SoHo Wine & Martini Bar). We need more places like this. read more

The Bohanan's is practically the majestic's annex. Well, I am all about traditions. So I had to stop by this bar before watching my very first musical play at the majestic tonight. I have to admit that I am not easy to please. I like upscale and sophisticated things just like I like a good looking young man in suits and tie. He has to look sharp, smart and has great taste and manners. Tonight, I had my first date with the bar at Bohanan's, let's just call him B. I've heard lots of good things about him. We met at the Yelp's backstage party and I had not stopped thinking about him since then. I can't deny that I was very tempted by B. So finally I decided to go on a date with him. Upon entering the door, I knew right away that B was absolutely my type. He looked so handsome! The ambience was great. My waiter was well dressed and very attentive. I looked around for a bit, people here all looked like they took great care of themselves. I like! Now B definitely gave me a very good first impression! I worry if B only has good looks. You know, those men who are shallow and empty inside. But it turned out he also has a great personality. I ordered the duck bacon & humbolt fog flat bread appetizer and a dessert cocktail called Ash Wednesday. I was blown away by the duck bacon appetizer, it was unbelievable! Definitely a must try! B sure knows how to impress a lady! The cocktail was a bit too strong to my liking. But it served its purpose and got me buzzed quickly! We were having such a great time! But I had to end my date with B early b/c I had a show to catch later that night. I really didn't want to leave. He clearly is the total package and a keeper! The waiter was fabulous and so was the food and drinks. My husband and I stopped by the bar since their main room was booked. We had a crimson pearl drink and a old fashion. Both were strong and delicious. For starters we had the truffle chips as well as the lollipops. Both were delicious. For the main my husband and I tried the beef back pasta I forgot the name but it was a rich and delicious meal. Lastly the creme brûlée was to die for. Over all a wonderful experience. As for the wait staff they were all very responsive. Our waiter Derrick was amazing and one of the best parts of our meal. He even offered to get us a recipe of the crimson pearl which we also loved. Such a beautiful bar! This place is where you imagine deals getting done by cattle barons and oil men. This place is covered in old, exquisite dark wood, with old pictures of San Antonio hanging about. It's the bottom floor bar on Houston Street, with the steak house upstairs. The staff is always amazing. They have a long list of wines and liquors. The service is always top notch. They'll brew up a pot of coffee or pull a shot of espresso when you ask for a coffee drink, even if it's late. They have a long list of beers- and the bartenders know a bit about each one, which is appreciated. They serve lots of local options too, which is amazing! The cocktails come with carefully crafted and designed ice- huge blocks that don't water down your drink. Classy! This place is local- not some chain bar you see downtown. It's a quieter, intimate kinda place, but they sometimes do live music on Downtown Tuesdays. The place is impeccably clean, and the restrooms are luxurious! We were downtown and ran into some friends and decided to grab some drinks. We ducked into the Bar at Bohanans an it's like stepping back in time. The bar has a speakeasy feel, dimly lit with lots of beautiful wood accents. We ordered a blackberry rickey (tasty) and a sazerac (super sexy drink made with rye whiskey and absinthe rinse). We also ordered shots of patron which came out in champagne flutes, so booshi . For appetizers we ordered a meat and cheese plate and lobster sliders and let me just say, those lobster sliders are life! Finally there was Meg. Meg was our server and she was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. Meg, you are amazing girl! I can't believe I haven't written a review yet for the Bar at Bohanan's. It's one of my favorite places to hole up and have a few (too many). First of all, the space is fantastically decorated--all heavy woods and rich fabrics and old-school Rat Pack ambiance-- but obviously, that's not enough to carry a bar to excellence. The service, too, is top-notch; everyone is friendly and attentive without annoyingly hovering over your party. The appetizers are also amazing. I love having something to munch on while imbibing, and the chefs at Bohanan's deliver on both flavor and technique every time. Whether they are assembling a simple charcuterie plate or preparing one of their crabcakes for you, this is bar food done very well. The real star here is the expertly-made drinks. Both the classics and a few in-house specialties comprise the drink menu, and every one I've sampled has been first-rate. My standby is the old-fashioned (complete with orange peel, y'all), but I also love the bee's knees and the gimlets (I prefer them with vodka over the standard gin, and that's how the Bar at Bohanan's makes them). The best part: if your appetite should grow over the course of the evening, all you need to do is make your way upstairs to the restaurant area, where you can blissfully continue your evening with more wining and dining. Lovely upscale moody bar. Live music on Friday nights. Extremely fair prices for the downstairs menu. We came in at about 10 PM on a Friday night, hoping to eat in the main dining room upstairs, but they were no longer taking walk-ins. Undeterred, we decided to check out their downstairs menu. Expecting the prices to be insane, we were impressed to see they were very reasonable when compared to the upscale, speakeasy feel of the place. We opted to be in a tucked away private corner away from the live music and the actual bar itself. Service started out pretty good, but at the end of the night when it got busier, we noticed it got a lot harder to get the attention of our waiter. I was a bit thrown off by how all of the entire waitstaff was dressed like they were the Secret Service, but it definitely enhanced the overall experience. We decided to go with the Olive Medley and Hummus Trio to start. For their prices, the servings were plentiful - almost too much for two people. The Steak Tartare was really great. The Tall With Soda cocktails were really fun. We had the Morning Glory Fizz and the Blackberry Rickey. We could've stayed and tried all of the Tall with Soda variants, but our old butts were tired. The creme brulee dessert was a perfect way to close out the evening. Really nice atmosphere for a fun and relaxing date night out. read more

Not sure if 1919 has the selection available here, no one else would even come close. Atmosphere, superlative service, and a food selection place them head and shoulders above the competition. And yes, it all comes at a price (that I consider offering good value but you may differ). Don't expect the banter with the bartenders that goes on at our other favorite haunts, but when asked, these guys will offer tips/tricks that are useful for home application. Live jazz on ocasion, but never loud enough to inhibit conversation. So why don't we come more often? In a word, parking. Yes they valet, but I don't recall it being complimentary. The real draw for me was the atmosphere and the service. The atmosphere is relaxing; glass and mirrors, rich colored woods, a stocked bar with sparkling liquors in beautiful bottles and of course some nice people watching. The service is beyond my expectations, which were already pretty high having read about Mark Bohanan. The HH itself does not do much for me, I am usually a wine gal and most of the specials were on mixed drinks. The Bar at Bohanan's is not to be missed though, make sure to sit in one of the comfortable lounge chairs and check out the bathroom - even if you don't have to go. read more

After starting the night off at a startlingly disappointing happy hour at Luke and an equally underwhelming downtown bar crawl, we salvaged the night when my friend insisted that we stop at the Bar at Bohanan's. It became apparent why my friend wanted to stop here as I ordered drinks next to two classy young women on my left. We broke into conversation while the bartender began to prepare a Sazerac. I love cocktails. I love Sazeracs. The Bar at Bohanan's makes a good Sazerac. Using rye whiskey and an absinthe bath, the drink is accented with bitters, a lemon twist, and just the right amount of simple syrup. Indeed, while it may be America's oldest cocktail, it remains one of its finest creations. Continuing down memory lane, I ordered an Old-Fashioned. This classic experienced a renaissance in popularity years ago during the heyday of Mad Men. Using New York's finest Hudson Baby Bourbon whiskey, Bohanan's version is well-balanced and boozy. If you are looking for old school cocktails made properly, then the Bar at Bohanan's should vault to the top of your list. After some absolutely horrific early experiences with the San Antonio cocktail scene, it looks like I'm finally finding some places that satisfy my moderately fickle palate. read more

The fiancée and I made our way through downtown San Antonio looking for good cocktails. Our walkabout took us to the Bar at Bohanan's, a well-appointed, very classy establishment, that looked like a place you'd expect to see rich Texas oil men or ranchers sitting in the leather bound chairs smoking cigars, and drinking fine bourbons or scotch. Well, it probably wasn't THAT hoity toity since they let me in the door, but it was still the classiest bar I set foot inside while in SA. The pedigree behind Bohanan's is impressive. Bohanan's touts that its staff was trained and the cocktail program consisting of modern takes on cocktail classics was created by renowned barman Sasha Petraske, who opened the equally renowned NYC bar, Milk & Honey. Still, pedigree will only get you so far. Fortunately, the training stuck as bartenders, Zach and Trevor, executed our cocktails smartly. I had the Creole Cocktail ($11) made with rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, amaro, and Benedictine. It was boozy, nicely balanced, and pleasantly sweet, but not sugary. It was a winner! The fiancée had the Left Hand Cocktail ($11) made with bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth, and chocolate bitters. It was even tastier than my drink, as it was boozy and bitter, but possessed very subtle milk chocolaty, creamy notes. Simply delicious! Had we stayed for a second round, I may have been tempted to have a glass of Pappy Van Winkle 10, 12, or (be still my beating heart) 23. Alas, we stopped at one. The Bar at Bohanan's offered up a very pleasant surprise in terms of its craft cocktails at fair prices, its spirits selection, and the skill of its bartenders. It's easily in the discussion for the best cocktail bar in town. Without a doubt, it's a place that we'll revisit the next time we're in San Antonio. read more

We stayed on Houston to come see the Christmas lights at the RIverwalk. I saw this place on Yelp and decided we absolutely had to come here for drinks. Boy, we weren't disappointed. This lovely, intimate space is definitely upscale and we were glad we were dressed nicely. For $25 give or take, we got an hour of downtime and two very nicely mixed cocktails. The jazz band showed up near the end and it became quite a bit more crowded, so we saw ourselves out as people were vying for our comfy chairs. I had a Linda Rose which was sweet-tart, like a sparkling lemonade champagne. It was delicious and strong and full of gin. My companion had a Left Hand (being of the left-handed persuasion) and it was pretty strong on the bourbon, but that's the case for most bourbon cocktails and I won't fault them. I'd come back in a heartbeat - not necessarily for food, but to feel fancy and sip something delicious. read more

There's more to Bohanan's than steak. Recently open, the Bar at Bohanan's located street level (downstairs from the restaurant) is truly a great find. The place has a style that is supposed to be like pre-Prohibition era. I'm not really familiar with that but the mood is relaxed. The bar has a nice set up, more well lit than an average bar but still sets a good vibe. On the night that I went there was a great four piece playing with a great loungy singer belting out groovy tunes. What's great about this place is that you can actually enjoy the place AND your company. You can actually hold conversations while music hovers in the background. And the drinks...they offer a broad selection of cocktails as well as specially infused liquors. The one that comes to mind is the serrano pepper infused tequila. I had this in the drink I ordered, True Azul, which I highly recommend. Also, I noticed there was draft beer available for those that enjoy brew. It looked as though they had a nice variety (of which I plan to try out on my next visit). You won't find any miller or bud here...or at least I didn't see any on draft. But I was impressed with what they had available, even if the selection is not as large as the cocktails. While at Yelp's Backstage Pass, my husband and I tried Bohanan's charcuterie plate. We enjoyed ourselves so much at the Bohanan's booth that after the event we went straight to their bar to check out the real deal. The Bar at Bohanan's is a classic steak house bar that will let you imagine how it might have been maybe in the 1920's. It's a beautiful space with dark wooden accents, rich fabrics and a classic but comfy lounge...I even loved the velvet-lined wallpaper in the women's restrooms! Although it looks old-fashioned, its still got the flatscreens, lots of draught beer choices, and a modern menu that we want! The staff is of the highest caliber, sharply dressed, knowledgeable, and fun to chat with at the bar. We were told to ask for Patrick at the bar. He helped us choose the spicy albondigas and the flatbread with duck. Both appetizers told us that we would definitely be back to try the actual steakhouse next time, they were delicious! Food and service was great, but one of the best parts about the Bar here is the atmosphere. Exceptional live jazz music and a lively after work suit crowd make it the perfect place to relax, enjoy yourself, and do some fantastic people watching. read more

Been here a couple times - usually before of after shows at Majestic or Tobin. I give them extra props for staying open a little late after a Robert Earl Keen Christmas show because of the crowd. Outstanding cocktails and great apps - which are big enough to share or eat as a meal. Went with Wade recently and he even ordered something from the upstairs appetizer menu - which isn't something I think they regularly do but he asked nicely and the service is top notch - seriously outstanding. This is an elegant place - which can come across as nice, quirky, or maybe a little stuffy to some. It is a bar for a fine dining restaurant. However there are still folk there in shorts as this is San Antonio. Along with fine dining it isn't cheap to go here so baller on a budget need not apply. If you are strapped for cash this week then go somewhere else. If you have the coin few places are better. read more

Had a great drink here but I waited 30 minutes on an app that only showed up after I asked for the check and to have it removed from my bill. What a great place in San Antonio! I found Bohanan's thanks to Yelp (of course!), and I am so happy to add this to my list of must visits when I am in SA. This was such a great place.. the decor, atmosphere, crowd, drinks, service, EVERYTHING. We sat at the bar as we arrived very early for our dinner reservation upstairs. The bartenders were wonderful- very helpful with great personalities. All of our drinks were fantastic- they have a great craft cocktail drink menu! They have a really good list of appetizers and light bites. The crowd was an eclectic mix of older and younger people, everyone was dressed nicely and was seemingly having a great time. There was live jazz music on Saturday night, but was really at an appropriate volume- you could have a conversation still very easily. I will definitely be back! read more

The Bar at Bohanan's is a shining star. After a disappointing dinner at another establishment, we decided to take in some live Jazz at the Bar at Bohanan's. The host sat us at a two-top about fifteen feet away from the stage area - the mood and setting were superior. We sat while enjoying our drinks and satisfying our stomachs with a wonderful selection of meats, cheeses, and fried brie. The atmosphere here is king. It's all rich, dark wood and gorgeous heavy fabric that just draws you and makes you want to touch everything. The bar is gorgeous with all the bottles lit and looking pretty. It's sensory overload here for me. But the service is also incredible. I mean *incredible*. They treat you so well here. They remember your drink even if you haven't been in in a few months. They keep your refills coming and engage with you about the drinks, how they're made, the types of spirits used. The drinks here are hand-crafted and made with a little extra love. It's just awesome all around. The last time I was in there was a great little band playing I guess you could call it jazz music. Used to be my go-to place before a show at the Majestic. The last few visits have been less than stellar and this time I arrived 90 min before my show. Told the host we wanted apps and drinks before the show. Once seated, we waited 15 min to get attention, and were told that the kitchen is slow so no food for us. Seriously?!!! Thanks for ruining Mom's birthday. When i told them they should tell us when we ask to be seated, i was told the host is new. Not my problem. I have season tickets, so this is their loss.
