The family and I went here for dinner on a Friday night. Although it looked crowded on the outside and we thought there would be a long wait, we were seated within five minutes inside the restaurant. We ordered the table side guacamole, steak fajitas and a chicken salad. Overall the food was very tasty and the portions we good. Of course it was a little pricey because it is on the river walk. The only negatives was that services was really slow and the dining area is very crowded. It took awhile for our waitress to make it to our table and she was gone in a flash after we told her our drink orders (we were ready to put in our food order by the time she go to our table, but she was gone.) That was the main theme for the night. She would stop by our table ask a question get an answer and was gone before we could say anything additional. Let me just start off ... our server Rick was stellar and he made a great table side guacamole right in front of us. He was very attentive. I ordered the fajitas and they were not what I'm use to back in El Paso. The meat was so tough and not tender at all. And don't be surprised at not getting salsa because they don't bring you any and DO NOT bother on getting extra tostada chips for your guacamole because it's an extra $2 every chip bowl. DO NOT GO Waited over an hour for our food. Waiter only came by the table twice in that time. After sitting there for 45 min or so we finally asked a passing waiter if we could get some water. And maybe our food. He said he would go find out. After about 10 min he came back with refills and part of the food. The rest followed shortly. All of the food was cold. The fajitas are like 31 dollars. Wayyyyy over priced for what you get. Maybe for a kids meal it would be good. Eventually we were able to leave. Our waiter passed off our table to another waiter. Upon walking out the manager was apologizing and asked what happened. We explained and our waiter magically appeared claiming we were lying. One problem. The other waiter showed up and confirmed to the manager all of our claims were true. We did not ask for a refund. Nor was one or any kind of compensation offered. This is just a good, solid Tex-Mex restaurant on the Riverwalk...and this was our second time here! We started with this appetizer, Picadillo Purses...and we loved it! Filled solid with beef, corn and carrots, they were quite good. For our entree, I had the Shrimp Tacos and my husband had the Pollo Relleno...and we both thought our dish was quite satisfying. I also really enjoyed their Pina Colada...small, but very strong and tasty! We sat on their patio, and it was comfortable...and the service was good. Situated right along the river walk with indoor and outdoor seating, we made a stop at the Iron Cactus for a delicious lunch! The host was extremely friendly and accommodating; something you don't get too often. Our waitress was also helpful when making suggestions and attentive. We came here on a weeknight and there was walk-in seating available. We tried quite a few different things - the guacamole, queso, cheese quesadilla, veggie fajitas, paella, and some drinks. The paella had good flavor but was a little more wet than my partner would have liked. The cheese quesadilla was also pretty good, filled with Monterey Jack cheese. The veggie fajitas were very small and not as sizzling as we would have liked. The dips were delicious - our waiter made the guacamole in front of us and the queso was in a cast iron pan so it stayed warm throughout the duration of the meal. An insanely good experience! The food at the Iron Cactus is delicious. Everything was incredibly flavorful and felt like the perfect mix of traditional and modern adaptions of Mexican food. All the food was so fresh and bursting with unique flavors. You must try the Tableside Guacamole - it was such a fun experience and was absolutely delicious. Our waitress let us know that Iron Cactus is one of the top 10 tequila bars in the US, and it sure does seem like it! With over 100 different tequilas on the menu, you are sure to find one you like. You have to grab a margarita here - they were delightful! The service here is incredible. Our waitress was super attentive, helpful, and spirited. I noticed the other tables nearby getting great service as well! There were also two mariachis going around offering to play songs for each table and they were super talented! First, we got the table-made guacamole. Always food of the gods. I had the Pollo Relleno. That and the salad were plated beautifully. The salad was very bright, fresh and tasty. My Pollo was also tasty, but a little over-sauced. It had a cream-based sauce that dominated. It was hard to taste the chicken and stuffing underneath. And the Street Corn side was the same--tasty, but over-sauced. It depends on what you like. Personally, I like a little lighter, grilled approach for Mexican food (the Pollo). Sunday evening walking on the Riverwalk, we were looking for tex-mex and this was close to our hotel. Fortunately people were clearing out when we arrived so we could get seated inside. The margaritas are pretty good; we did the blood orange and prickly pear on the rocks and both were tasty. As for food, my girlfriend ordered the brisket enchiladas while I ordered a trio of appetizers (avocado/portabello fries, brisket quesadillas, pork tamale pops). The food was alright, the enchiladas are smoothered in the adobo sauce with some cheese and are filling although they needed more seasoning. The quesadillas were probably my favorite of the appetizers. The avocado/portabello fries are crispy but again, need more seasoning. And the pork tamale pops are tasty but if it wasn't for the sauces, probably wouldn't have much flavor. For the prices you pay, you're paying tourist prices for a basic tex-mex experience. But they do good margaritas and we had a good server in Eric who was attentive and helpful. They are much more on the bare seafood taste than seasoned taste, so be aware of this as you order (not bad at all just someone's preference). Tequila-Marinated Chicken Breast was good as well. Good flavor and cooked well, with a nice selection of toppings and a side of tortillas. General opinion, yes it is a bit pricey for location, but flavor can be worth the price. Portions are smaller than a typical Mexican grill. The rice was okay, there was an awkward aftertaste that I can't explain. Stopped by for a Saturday night dinner while walking the Riverwalk. We had an approx 15 min wait to be seated. ATMOSPHERE: This place was PACKED, granted it was Saturday night. They have ample outdoor and indoor seating, but we still had a short wait. Despite the crowd, I was still able to have a conversation with my party without needing to yell. FOOD: We got the table side fresh guacamole to start. It was an experience seeing it assembled in front of us, and it tasted great. The ingredients are typical for guac except they added citrus too, which complemented the flavor well. We ordered the Chicken Enchiladas for our main course, which was another great choice. The cheese was melty, chicken seasoned well, and sauce flavorful. SERVICE: Even though it was busy, our waitress stopped by a few times to ask us how things were. The food did take a little long to come out, including the table side guacamole, but overall not bad considering how busy it was. PRICE/VALUE: Pretty typical price for dinner along the Riverwalk. The guacamole was just right for 2 people, and the entree size was good for one solid meal with no leftovers. I wouldn't come here for a particularly high-value meal. We enjoyed the Iron Cactus last evening. The Chips, two Salas, and Queso went great with our Frozen and Passion Fruit Margaritas. The Beef Fajitas were very good; however, the Charro Beans tasted like plain ole pinto beans. Our daughter had Shrimp Tacos, and our son-in-law had a dish similar to Huevos Rancheros. The location is everything for this place, service is a little slow and food was nothing to write home about. I got the shrimp enchiladas and the shrimp was overcooked and not quite fresh. I came with a large group of colleagues. The atmosphere is nice and you can sit outside, weather permitting. I can't say I enjoyed being asked if I wanted live music played (for a tip, of course) but they weren't pushy when we said no. The table setup was not ideal for a large group either - essentially our party was split between two tables within a very large booth, but we made it work. Tortilla chips (a little undersalted to my taste) came with two salsas - one was warmed and very smoky! Both were good. We tried the crab stuff jalapeno poppers - delicious and with real crab, not Krab. Tableside guacamole was well balanced with high quality avocados. In general I think guacamole is better when it has time to rest and let flavors marry, but this was excellent. Drinks were good and they have my favorite tequila, Corralejo! Every seemed to enjoy their food, though I would echo other reviews that said it's in general underseasoned and underspiced. More chili, more heat, more salt all around would be appreciated. I don't like giving such a low score, but it just wasn't good. You are paying for the ambiance, and convenience. I was hungry and my hotel was a three minute walk away. The service was pretty average, and I ordered the blackened fish tacos and a Paloma with tajin on the rim. The drink was pretty good. The tacos were bad. There was some kind of seasoning on the fish, you could see it, but like a lot of other reviewers said, it was completely bland. You couldn't taste ANY seasoning, definitely not blackened. It was also completely overcooked. It was like chewing on a balloon. The rice was overcooked and mushy. The salsa barely had any spice. They put a ton of cabbage on there, but very little sauce. I knew it would be considering two meals, one being chicken, came out in 5 minutes after ordering. He told us his top 5 food and thats when I went with southwest paella. It was delicious. I will most definitely come back again. The service was above and beyond. The skirt steak fajitas for 2 were so tender and flavorful. It almost was like a steak butter. It was so good! It had plenty for 2 and we had a 3rd person eat mainly the grilled vegetables and sides that came with the fajitas. For a Saturday evening we really lucked out and got seats outdoors to enjoy the River walk right away with no wait. As soon as we got seated the crowds were rolling in so I can tell it gets super busy but there is plenty of seats inside however everyone prefers to be outside which I don't blame them and the weather was perfect. Service was amazing! She stayed on top of drinks and had great suggestions. I would definitely come back and next time take them up on their special tequila drinks since that's one of the big things they're known for.
