    Homemade Pozole from "grandma's recipe!"
    Terri S.

What a cozy bar!! We were so cold and they were very hospitable! Irish coffee, queso & guac, flameado, and pozole!! No complaints for me! Hubby said the flameado was alright, but he switched the chorizo with beef!! Idk if that made a difference, but my pozole warmed me up inside and out!! Layers of flavor, and a little spicy kick! It was DELICIOUS! That queso and guacamole were delicious as well! But really the service was phenomenal with half the city shut down!!

We had 5:30 PM reservations on New Year's Eve. After waiting 30 minutes, our food arrived completely cold: beans, rice, and both fajita skillets. Cold meat is unacceptable. My spouse can tolerate cold food and hates to complain, but also felt it was unacceptable. I personally will not eat cold meat, especially when I'm paying $21 for a fajita plate. I even offered for the waitress to touch the meat herself to confirm how cold it was. Our waitress, Monica P, was excellent: apologetic, attentive, and proactive. She immediately informed the kitchen and manager advocating for us The issue was management. Despite being told our food was cold, the manager (Ruby) avoided our table, made eye contact, turned away, and passed by multiple times without addressing us. There was no attempt to de-escalate, take ownership, or properly recover the experience. The fajitas were remade and came out hot, but the beans and rice were still cold, even the second time. Does Casa Catrina serve cold beans and rice as a normal practice? Only after my family had finished eating did the manager finally stop by with a generic, "Is everything okay?" As she turned to walk away, I had to call her back and ask if she'd been informed that all of our food originally came out cold. She said, "Yes, we are very apologetic," and mentioned they'd be taking something off my chicken fajita plate. $2.10 was taken off the bill essentially my military discount which felt dismissive given the situation. Monica P deserves recognition. She was the only reason this didn't completely blow up. She handled the situation professionally and with empathy. I truly hope servers don't have to tip out managers like this. Dressing cute and walking around the floor isn't management. She needs training. Good management shows accountability, guest engagement, and service recovery. None of that happened here. Monica P did her job well; management did not. I won't be returning.

This is was my first visit to San Antonio and wanted to do the famous Riverwalk. Unfortunately the river had been drained for cleaning the weekend we happened to come so the canal was dry and smelled a bit awful. Apparently they drain the canal every 2 years for cleaning - what luck! Bummer, it was disappointing but a good reason to return! During our walk, we stopped by Casa Catrina to wet our beaks. It had been cold this week in January but today it warmed up nicely. We decided to get some tipsy smoothies. We got several frozen mango & guava margaritas. First sip shook me! God these pours are strong! It was good, but overly sweet. I couldn't finish it because it was too sweet. The side bar area was cute. You don't have to go inside the restaurant to get drinks and the bartender was nice. We didn't get anything to eat so next time, we'll have to try their food.

    Flameado (fundido dish)

Ambience 5 out of 5- beautiful decor and great vibes. We had the flameado (their take on a fundido) and it was tasty. I really like the poblanos and chorizo with it. Oddly it came out a little cold despite us waiting a long time for it. Solid 4 out of 5 for the food. Service 1 out of 5. The first waiter was friendly enough but we saw him very little. Additionally when tables who came after we had ordered (with a larger group) then ordered the same dish and got it significantly before us while we waited about 20 min, it doesnt speak well of service. The the waitress who came to bring the food was rude, gave us side eye, and as my husband described "threw it on the table and walked off". We didn't even get plates when we got the food (like all the other tables did). The difference in service between tables was very obvious and rude. I had considered ordering other food and drinks, like the empanadas, but after the rudeness and lack of service we decided not to today. I'd come back to give it another try as the food was pretty good and the restaurant ambience was nice. However, definitely disappointed in the service we got.

Nice decorations everywhere, we sat outside was a little too loud for me, we came because it looked like a chill spot the lights inside were very bright. The service was fast very attentive, the server was very nice I got a sangria, Aldo salsa and chips, guacamole and steak nachos.

Decided to be a rebel and despite the skepticism, stopped in on my quick visit from Houston. Will preface if you visit to pack your patience and hope for the best. Service: 4/5 To start there seems to be 2 entrances that make it confusing on where and who to check in with. There was a line through what was considered the main entrance, (the entry by the plaza) and people walking in from the riverwalk side. After about 20 chaotic minutes of figuring who was being seated next, people leaving after waiting and even after I was overlooked by the hostess as she went on to the people behind me, I asked who do we check in with, was met with I am not sure, let me check with the hostess. I was eventually seated at a standalone table by the bar. Cindy which I believe was the hostess was friendly and checked in on me throughout my visit. When I was sat, I didn't get a menu, so I went to the bar and LeeLee was slinging drinks as best and fast as she could, it was only her there, but she maintained a very focused demeanor and since no one came to take my order, Leelee was kind enough to take my order and make my drink. It seems there was a party going on upstairs, so made it seem like the restaurant was understaffed and added to the extended wait times and chaos. Food/Drink: 1/5 Carne Asada Tacos: I kept it simple and went for the carne asada tacos which consists of cilantro, onion and rice and beans. I wait about 30 minutes to get my food, I ask for salsa, that never came. I stepped to the bar to ask for limes. And to top it off, the meal did not come as advertised, they had run out of rice so I only got beans and the tacos. Was still charged the full price. I took a bite of the taco and was completely disillusioned at it being cold and "sin sazón" (flavorless) and without salsa to hopefully add flavor. I will say the beans were lukewarm and had some taste to it. Drink: Dona Catrina: it's supposed to be their top shelf margarita, it was not anything noteworthy that I'd want to have another one, standard flavor with plenty of ice to water it down. Ambiance: 3/5 The place has indoor and outdoor seating. Both areas are well decorated with Catrina's and Sugar Skulls. Suggestions for improvement: Giving customers a buzzer for when their table is ready or check in with cell phone and receive a text when table is ready so that the chaotic confusion is minimized. Letting customers know if they are out of anything ahead of ordering or offering a substitution. The kitchen seemed to have been understaffed as many tables around had placed their orders ahead of me and weren't getting their food. The place has potential, but from reading the reviews, seems it's seen it's share of not challenges. Located in a popular and visible area, this restaurant could do well, but needs to work out it's issues to help give patrons a consistent experience of friendly quick service, welcoming ambiance, but most importantly delicious and flavorful food.

Worst super nachos I have ever had on Earth.

We ordered the nachos. Horrible decision. It reminded me of ordering nachos during a high school football game. White gooey cheese like from a jar or can on stale chips. Two stars for their vibe on the SA Riverwalk area. Stick bottled beer . Margaritas were light as a feather. And we're walking....

We were waffling between three places to go for a bite. Boy, did we ever choose right! This relatively new hidden gem should be on everyone's list. They turned on the patio heater for us, and everyone was SO WELCOMING! Our server was Bunny. She is a ray of sunshine. We asked for frozen 'Rita's and they are amazing! We ordered the Campechana & empanadas. So good! The Campechana was chock full of shrimp, octopus, and veggies with an utterly amazing sauce. The empanadas have chorizo and Oaxaca cheese. They were perfectly fried, too. The entire restaurant is decorated with holiday accoutrements and Dia de los Muertos themes. The restaurant is in the old Fig Tree space, and while the menu is small (great choice!), everything that came out had amazing depth of flavor. The other dishes we saw looked delicious, too. Put this place on your "must-visit" list. If you are down on the Riverwalk, the entrance is easily missed as it is sandwiched between Prost Haus and Smoke, but don't pass them by!

    Outdoor seating 2nd level

The perfect spot along the riverwalk for tequila and tacos. I recommend. Details below. Visited on a Saturday afternoon around 11:30, party of 2, seated immediately. Outdoor seating is tiered on 2 levels facing the riverwalk with a lot of space between the dining area and the pedestrian walkway. Other riverwalk restaurants have seating in the walkways. 1st visit. Had hurricane cocktail made with tequila and watermelon margarita. Tasty. Are shrimp tacos and ceviche. Authentic interior of Mexico food. Definitely dine in.

DO NOT let the atmosphere and beautiful colors fool you! My fiancé and I had the worst experience at Casa Catrina. We were visiting and thought we'd try something new..never again! Service was awful, food was too pricey for quality and portions. We asked to sit inside and we got sat next to the exit door. The waitress we had was also a bar tender apparently. I understand staff shortages(not sure if that was the case) but that's not my fault. If I'm paying for a service I expect it! This place made us feel like they were racially profiling which I NEVER say but is how I felt. The other 2 ethnic parties were given amazing service. Water was served in a nice glass water bottle and/or poured into their glasses while we had plastic cups. The tacos of carnitas were nasty and dried! Had no flavor other than nutmeg. Just ridiculous!

    Enchiladas with rice and beans

The service and atmosphere was nice. The foo was good and would recommend. However I was going to get the tamales and they were out which was disappointing. The quantity of the food was little for what you paid for. We also had 2 different waiters which was very confusing at the beginning as one just disappeared after taking our drink order. Then we had to get a new waiter. TIP they have maps at the front of the restaurant table and on the back there is a coupon for this restaurant for a 15% off your meal. Show this to your waiter and save some money!

Nice looking restaurant in a cool location but ... Service and atmosphere: Atmosphere was good. Nice music, great views of the river walk, however, this is where it ends. Service was not the best. The staff gave impression that they couldn't be bothered and were not attentive at all. We had to ask for small plates for starters, silverware, and napkins. Food and drinks: Sangria was good but, again, arrived way after the stater was served and we had to ask the waitress to check on the drinks. Tacos were okay. Carnitas taco was dry but salsa helped to moisten it a bit. We had to cancel the order of chips and guacamole and slaw as we waited more than 40 minutes for it. There is no excuse for waiting this long for chips and guacamole! Pricing: Average. Unfortunately, I don't recommend this place.

Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks.
