Pork Schnitzel
Eric B.

My wife and I headed downtown a couple of hours early before a show at the Majestic Theatre so we could grab dinner, and Jots at the historic Gunter Hotel, right across the street, was an easy choice. It was our first time visiting, and since it was a Thursday around 5 p.m., the restaurant was quiet with only two other couples dining. It made for a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere to start our evening. My wife ordered one of their specialty cocktails, which came topped with basil oil drops. The presentation was eye-catching, and the aroma alone was worth the order. I had to try a sip, and it was excellent. I went with a Hefeweizen myself, and it paired nicely with the meal. For dinner, my wife chose the pork schnitzel, and I went with the Apple & Sage Texas Hen. She really enjoyed the schnitzel, perfectly cooked, served over a bed of spaetzle, and complemented by an incredibly flavorful gravy that she couldn't stop talking about. My Texas Hen was beautifully plated and even better to eat. The meat was tender and juicy, served over creamy mashed potatoes and topped with a delicious apple compote. I absolutely loved every bite. If you're headed to the Majestic, I highly recommend arriving an hour or two early and having dinner at Jots. You won't be disappointed! And if you still have room after dinner, there's a charming little bakery next door with some amazing pastries, perfect for a sweet finish to the night.

Great restaurant inside the Gunter Hotel. Very cool vibe, and the food is very good. We had dinner before a show at the Majestic and enjoyed the prefix pre show meal. I highly recommend enjoying a meal here.

Never have I ever paid $31 for a hamburger, but also, never have I ever been treated to such an elevated service experience at a restaurant. Jots is part of the new multi-million dollar remodel of The Gunter Hotel. They told us mine was their first-ever reservation, so they really rolled out the red carpet. Our server, Juan, took care of us very well. Our water glasses were never empty. When I told him a family member had worked as a server in that hotel back in the 1940s, he told the manager and she came over to hear the story (and to tell some she had heard about this historic place). The burger was good, and the fries were really good--perfectly seasoned and crunchy. Our table was treated to two desserts, on the house, to celebrate being their first reservation. They've been open for a while, but I guess we were the first to call ahead and reserve a table. Being right across the street from The Majestic, this is a great option for theater-goers who want a nice meal before their shows.

Beautiful decor and relaxed ambiance. The food did not amaze me. I got the pork schnitzel and it was okay not great. Service was great, the staff is welcoming and attentive. I will go back to try a different dish.

Bordeaux Braised Short Ribs

The short ribs were excellent, but the overall experience fell short. Service was slow, and while our server was kind, the rest of the staff was disappointing. The $30 valet charge for restaurant guests also feels unreasonable, especially when many other hotel restaurants offer complimentary parking. The restaurant and hotel both have a lot of potential, but the customer experience and overall hospitality are currently lacking, which takes away from what could otherwise be a great dining experience. The restaurant itself is very pretty and I loved the new look but unfortunately it was a miss and I wouldn't return.

For a starter we shared the cornbread with another couple and it was plenty for 4 people. If you are from out of town and looking for some Texas-shaped vittles or just want something substantial to stretch your meal I recommend it! Very tasty and filling. For my main I had the scallops with creamed corn risotto. It was a dainty portion but the flavors were nice. My husband had the short rib tagliatelle which he loved. It was very rich and filling. We had the buttermilk pie again for dessert and this time it tasted sweeter than I remembered. It was good but we couldn't finish it. Idk if it was my tastebuds or if it was different. Anyways still a great meal overall and we will be back!

Checked Yelp for dinner suggestions so Doc drove us to the paid lot next to where all the Cinderella lit up carriages drawn by horses were lined up. It seemed the boats going up and down the River portion of the Walk were busier. While we were walking I had my eyes open for a table with a view. We stopped at Four Brothers. The receptionist went over suggestions on the menu on her outdoor podium. Cornbread in the shape of Texas, shareable items like Dino ribs for $82, plus Pork Shank and ice tea completed our order. Everyone was very friendly. We had an exceptional view and we had more than enough food that we had to ask for take out boxes. My favorite was the Mac & cheese though I'm usually not a fan. This dish used cork screw shaped pasta and it was moist and not stuck together. I had to share a photo of it with Sweetie who is in Tokyo right now. Doc liked the pimento for the cornbread. As it was almost 9 pm we decided to pass on the boat ride but just walk on the other side with shops and more eateries. We're back on the road again tomorrow to Arizona.

The food was not the best especially for the price. The drinks on other hand were amazing. My server Marah toke great care of me. Attentive, funny, and well knowledgeable. She helped me pick an outstanding bourbon due to having so many I couldn't decide. She's impeccable at her job didn't have to write anything down had multiple tables and was very efficient. Would come back for the drinks and her service. The food on other hand definitely could use some help.

Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)

Firstly, we had trouble getting an uber at first and when I called the staff was very friendly and were able to hold the table a little longer which I appreciated. The menu is a mix of Asian Fusion small plates and I would have loved to have had more of a sampling of the menu but it wasn't that large of a party. The cocktails were not too sweet and perfectly balanced. The Fist of Fury was so refreshing and the Yuzu margarita was delightful! The plates come when they are ready and I have to say the food came really quick! All of it was fantastic! Surprisingly the shredded vegetable salad was amazing and one of my favorite dishes! The tamarind glaze on the Chicken Karaage was not overpowering and so tasty. The service was amazing and the vibes of the restaurant were a lot of fun. The bathrooms were down the stairs and there was a little bar off to the side. Would definitely go back! I couldn't stop talking about it the next day to anyone that would listen.

Waiter said it was fine and that I could pull them off.... Nice. I did and revealed quite a bit of ice-burg lettuce just getting a little brown.....maybe a free specs of bacon that costs extra.....they really push it also. I won't eat here again. Besides the place needing a really good cleaning..... everything. You'd probably be amazed how must dust you are eating when the air conditioning system starts blowing. Look at the picture frames and electrical outlets with power cords, blow up the picture and see. They don't bother cleaning the table sides or menu holders......YUCK So I tried with the on duty Manager in the ASH gray tshirt who I thought at first was the Dishwasher. He was Ok the first conversation, we told him we just wanted the table to be cleaned. They complied, took them twice though. The second conversation he listened but I could tell he couldn't care less, so I looked for reasons to not to call the Health Inspector and asked him for some??? He told me to call the Managing Partner and kinda laughed then walked off. I saw this place must be owned or Managed-by Texas Roadhouse...... what a shame, this place could be great !! It is NOT. Additional note: Restrooms were filthy and unattended, used paper all over and unattended trash overflowing. I just think this is a sign of poor Management at this location. Maybe some re-training is in order ?? The single bartender was also overwhelmed. Plenty of waitstaff checking phones, group talking where they could have been helping out other areas that needed attention. This is the Culebra and Loop 410 Location. I never had a problem at 1604 and Culebra/Shaenfield Rd. Location....... I just wanted to be clear.
