Service is always friendly. I have been here multiple times for their fried catfish but this is my first breakfast. Ordered one biscuit with sausage gravy and a side of sliced tomatoes because... well that's how it's done in Mississippi! The gravy is good ol' southern gravy! No fancy mixins like thyme or rosemary ( thank goodness!). The biscuit is a great fluffy biscuit and the tomatoes a great fresh ripe side. I also had a pecan pancake for dessert! I have been eating at Abel's since 1997. always been great American food and a happy atmosphere. But since Abel sold out To a Hispanic lady, The staff has been replaced with family members now. Spanish speaking waitresses and service has been slower, with some not showing up. The music is horrible and sounds like it's coming from a transistor radio. No more 50s music. Me and my wife overheard waitresses gossiping about other waitresses. This would have never happened under Abel's administration. And the green peas and carrots was definitely an open can. Not freshly made. We gave it another chance after that. But we had to say goodby. Too bad, we really loved Abel's at one time. Everytime I drive by this place there is a line in the morning. Finally got to try Abel's with the family this morning and now I know why people are willing to wait. Their customer service is amazing. Our waitress knew customer's name like they have been friends forever. Reasonable prices for the meal. I had their Abel's breakfast and it was better than average and it came out fast too. From the time we put our name on the waiting list till the time I had my meal was about 30 minutes. Not bad. It was pretty packed inside and had a country home feel with their decor. So if you're looking for a quick, decent meal that won't hurt the wallet. This normally my place to go get chicken fried steak but yesterday meal was not on point. The meat was not tenderized and had chewy overcooked flavor which made it kind of tough to eat were normally I can cut with a fork without using a knife. I just hoping they not going down the hill but 7-15-26 had some bad weather and probably had some employees call in due to the weather and didnt have the normal cook on duty. As I was coming back from San Antonio, I noticed I was entering Schertz and recalled that there's a Diner nearby. The place in question is a wonderful and staple in the neighborhood, it's "Abel's Diner". This place is wonderful the food is amazing the breakfast is by far one of the best in town. But today it was lunch time, so I wanted to try if the lunch is as good as their breakfast. And I wasn't disappointed, but let me go to the beginning. As you walk in you see a good amount of seating even for somewhat larger groups, the hostess takes you to your seat and then they take your drink order. The people that are taking and bringing your meal are extremely helpful and all around wonderful people. For my meal I ordered the "Homestyle Hamburger" with fries as my side. I'm not going to lie, but at first glance it looked odd, being on what appears a hoagie bun. But don't be fooled, it was absolutely delicious I had cheese and bacon to the hamburger and it brought it to next level. The fries themselves were equally delicious, overall this place continues to serve great food and is a wonderful option. read more

My dad is obsessed with this place. Notice he's the one always ordering the Chicken Fried Steak. Abel's was sold a while ago and prior to that, portion sizes got smaller. It had been awhile since we've been here and after the original owners turned the business over to their daughters. We wondered if the food and service would deteriorate as it often does when original owners retire or sell. We were glad that nothing went down hill. I had the western omelette which had tomatoes, ham, cheese peppers and onions. The omelette was perfectly prepared. Not overcooked like some places tend to do with omelettes but fluffy and just the right ratio of ingredients! I also tried their pancakes which in the past were always fluffy and very good - they didn't disappoint - perfect! The service was also very good. My server was prompt and friendly. I honestly might have to say that the food and service have actually even gotten better. I like a medium rare steak, not a rare hamburger steak. Service was subpar as my glass of sweat tea sat empty the majority of my meal. Fortunately had a glass of water to wash down my meal. I've tried several different dishes from this restaurant and to me they're just mediocre. I had the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce didn't taste like hollandaise sauce. It had an off taste to it. When we got there about 10:20 AM my party ordered breakfast and I wanted to order off the lunch menu but was told I had to wait until 11:15 AM so I confirmed it with the cashier as we were leaving the restaurant . You cannot order between 10:30 AM and 11:15 AM off the menu because they're changing from the breakfast menu to the lunch menu . For a person that doesn't like breakfast this was kind of a red flag for me. The biscuits are homemade and good. The gravy is ok but all the other dishes that I've had are mediocre what I do recommend is the homemade cinnamon rolls with a cup of coffee. read more

Their special for Wednesday is beef tips. $11.99 plus $2.99 for salad, drink is $2.75. On top of that, if you don't live around there, you have to spend gas money getting there and back plus fight I-35 traffic. Is it worth it....I don't think so now. It's a quaint little place tucked away in the corner of a strip center in Schertz, Texas just outside of San Antonio city limits. The service is friendly and this day we were the only ones eating at 2:00pm on a Monday. One of their specials was a chicken fried steak which we were not going to pass up. However, the four of us know our chicken fried steaks and where to go for the best. Abel's doesn't make the list. The steak was tough and needed to be tenderized. And the batter didn't stick to the steak. The flavor was okay, the mashed potatoes were good, and the gravy was good. We all had the mixed veggies and they were mushy. We did have desert and the cherry pie and bread pudding were excellent. We'll try Abel's again and order something different. read more

I went to Abel's all the time growing up! Then I didnt go for years, until it was at the new location. I was bumed about not getting and rolls, since they were a dinner only item. The new location is a lot bigger and seems nicer to me. The host was great, but the server was not great. She ws very pushy and not helpful. Seemed like she was ready to snap... I dont like havong awardness with someone handling my food. The food was good, but not like how i remembered it... Servings were large though, so that was a plus! Great, old-time spot for some classic diner fare. Been here for both breakfast and lunch, everything was great both times. Definitely recommend the club sandwich, it was large and packed with meat and veg, and the bacon was super crisp, just the way it should be. The waitresses are all very nice, and everyone seems like they enjoy working there, which is a rarity these days. Abel himself is often on site, either cooking up a storm in the back or walking around and checking on the guests, which is an awesome thing to see in an owner. I had really high hopes walking into Abel's Diner. I looked at the menu online and saw that it was identical to the menu back in my hometown at the local diner. They even ran two daily lunch specials, just like the restaurant back home did. I walked inside to ask about employment opportunities. I asked "Hello, are you all hiring for servers?" The woman responded "Chili's is!!" I paused to see if she was going to answer my question. She did not, so I asked it again. "Are you guys hiring for servers?" Another woman behind the counter said "you can just take an application." And I was on my way out the door. It seems if you're not a familiar face around here, they don't care to speak to you. Went to Abel's for breakfast this weekend. Total score! The waitress seated us quickly and got our drink order. When she delivered the drinks she asked if we would like a cinnamon roll for the table. OMG, it was fabulous! We had eggs Benedict, chicken fried steak and a 2 egg breakfast. Everything was tasty and served hot. The entire staff is friendly and efficient. Grabbed breakfast with family on a Saturday morning. The wait was only 10-15 minutes, so we did not mind waiting. One complaint about service, then I'll rave about the food. The hostess asked how many, I told her "3 adults, 2 high chairs" - so she corrected me and said "So, 5?" I said "Yes" When my name was called, I thought they were calling another party because the hostess said "Nicole for 3" - she looked right at me so I corrected her and said "3 adults, 2 high chairs, 5 total" - another employee seemed annoyed with the hostess and told me they would get it taken care of. They had to scramble to get us a table because the head count was wrong. When we sat down, there were no high chairs and I went to grab them myself - once I grabbed them the hostess told me "I got it " and took over. We also noticed a couple families leave before their names were called. The service on the front end was not the greatest. However, once we sat down, our waitress was wonderful and the food was so delicious. We enjoyed every bit of the cinnamon roll (shared by the table) and everyone was doting on my kids - it was great. We really enjoyed our food, I wanted to try a bit of everything.
