Finally! Some good Hawaiian food! Do you ever offer chefs to come home with you so that they can cook for you all the time? I had the opportunity to talk to the owners of this place and they are absolutely wonderful! Owners Joe & Nani come from working in all levels and jobs at high-end restaurants and taking that knowledge and skill into their first baby. They are starting off their very first location working out of a kitchen in the back of a bar/club called paper tiger. They were nice enough to give me a little tour. You may need to be patient with your order, everything is made to order. They don't just lump up a bunch of ingredients and microwave it or heat it up. I saw them in action and everything is cooked fresh in a tiny kitchen with a tiny staff being brand new. They currently only have a few items on their menu as they want to specialize and that they did definitely well. I was told to keep a lookout for seasonal or additional items as the future progresses. - loco moco (patty was actually tender, juicy, & extremely flavorful) 5/5 - Mac salad (just order the largest size they have, trust) 5/5 - garlic shrimp (reminds me of the favorite stops in Hawaii) 5/5 - kalua pig (holy moly, so soft and tenderized) 5/5 - Portuguese sausage (these are just any Portuguese sausage wieners, they are specifically shipped in from Hawaii, nice & big) 5/5 - garlic fried rice (make sure to get this upgrade in everything you can, to die for) I was fortunate to try majority of the menu but definitely not all. I'll have to make another 30+ mile trip just to finish off the menu and get my favorite repeats.

damn i was only looking to ubereats some spam musubi to take to the movies, but tried their garlic shrimp plate and it's a solid 9/10 for me. never could find a place similar to giovanni's in oahu but this comes close!!! to the owner - if you guys are taking new menu requests (haha) please offer a spam musubi w/ the rice mixed with the garlic shrimp sauce!! would honestly be so amazing

OMG if you know anything about real Hawaiian food, this place really captures all of the signature dishes and elevated them to exceed my expectations. I lived in Hawaii for a few years and to learn that the owner is originally from there really made sense of why each dish did not disappoint! We wanted to order everything but there was only 3 of us so we had to stick to just these few dishes for now. We got fries and garlic shrimp as apps and then 2 of us ordered the longanisa moco and 1 ordered the bbq chicken all with garlic fried rice and let me just tell you that not one thing wasn't full of flavor and you could just tell they really put detail into every dish. The only thing that was a little confusing was finding the place as we went during off hours of only pick up and delivery so be mindful of that. You can have some of the items with drinks after 9pm at paper tiger. You have to enter the back parking lot through western Ave & then call to grab your order. You won't regret ordering extra dishes so you can try everything!

Beginner's guide to The Local Moco! . They use the kitchen out of Paper Tiger, so you're going to enter the parking lot from Western Ave right before Beverly. The owners brought hawaiian comfort to Ktown. Especially with the rain it's exactly what this city needs. You can't go wrong with any of the items. TheClassic: 5/5 they're loco moco is so juicy garnished with crispy shallots. It adds a nice texture to the mix. They always cook the egg to perfection. It comes with mac and side salad. Their Mac salad is something simple but hits hard. You can order additional on the side. I'm a saucy girl, so I always order extra gravy. If you're hesitant, go with their classic. Da Kine Breakfast: 5/5 Portuguese sausage over their garlic fried rice and fried egg (& side of Mac and side salad). The saltiness from the sausage with the garlic rice gives you a perfect bite. I always order this, so I can take it to work to for breakfast. TLM Musubi: 5/5 I'm always skeptical with musubi's cause some times there's too much rice to spam ratio or the spam is overly sauced. They did their math and found the golden ratio for it. Check them out. The owners are just as amazing as the food. It's my new go to spot for Sunday's or Monday's.

I was in the area and was in the mood for Hawaiian food and I saw this new business and decided to give it a try. I ordered The Local Moco's Loco moco is the best Loco moco I've had. The gourmet meat patty is very tasty, juicy, and the size is nice and healthy. The over easy egg was cooked to perfection, and the gravy to top it off was perfect as well. The mac salad was not too soft and not too hard, and I liked the small bits of celery and carrots in it that added some more texture to it. I upgraded the rice to the garlic fried rice option-- I definitely recommend this if you get this. I added a side of Portuguese sausage. I've had Portuguese sausage before, but this one tasted better than the ones I've got before and also the ones I've bought at the store. This must be a Hawaiian brand that we don't we don't see often on the mainland -- probably something more of what the "locals" eat in Hawaii because I've never had this before elsewhere. You can tell by the diameter of this, not the same as others. I also got a side of kalua pork, and boy, was that tasty as well! I'll definitely be back for more! Overall review: Food is on point, served in a timely manner and customer service is 100!

Nestled in the sauce were vibrant, perfectly cooked vegetables: tender bok choy, slightly charred green beans, and slices of eggplant that had soaked up all the savory depth of the stew. At the heart of the dish lay generous chunks of beef -- fork-tender, deeply flavored, with just enough fat to melt into the sauce and give it that rich, silky mouthfeel Kare Kare is known for. Sprinkled over the top were crunchy bits, adding a satisfying contrast to every spoonful. Of course, the small side of bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) was essential -- a modest dollop transformed each bite, balancing the sweetness and creaminess of the peanut sauce with a punch of briny intensity. Paired with steaming garlic rice, every scoop felt like the perfect blend of textures and flavors, a true homage to the Filipino classic. Eating Spoon & Pork's Kare Kare felt both nostalgic and elevated -- the heart and soul of a traditional comfort food presented with an eye for freshness and balance. It's the kind of dish that makes you slow down, savor each bite, and immediately start planning your next visit.

4.5 stars. Sorry,…read moreguys - I'm still catching up on my reviews and am kicking myself for failing to write this before Spoon & Pork permanently shut its doors. This was an unforgettable eatery. During our trip to Los Angeles in May, 2023, Wendell invited Jay, Z and me to meet up with Veda and him for a late lunch at 2 PM at one of their favourite Filipino restaurants, Spoon & Pork, on Sunday, the 7th. Spoon & Pork, which originated as a food truck, was a restaurant that specialized in Filipino comfort food with a contemporary twist. They offered a fresh, inventive fusion of the flavours of the Philippines with modern sophistication. Nestled in the vibrant heart of Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighbourhood, Spoon & Pork was a cozy boutique eatery on bustling Sunset Boulevard that greeted guests with a neon pig sign at their front entrance. No private lot on this busy street, so finding nearby parking was a bit challenging and although the charming spot offered both indoor and al fresco dining, seating was also limited. The tropical-inspired dining room with warm wood accents created an effortlessly cool and relaxed atmosphere that felt both modern and rooted in tradition. Upon entry, guests were welcomed by the aroma of sizzling meats and fragrant spices which alluded to the culinary journeys to come. The food at Spoon & Pork wasn't exactly what one's nanay (mom) or lola (grandma) would cook. Celebrating fresh takes on the richness of Filipino cuisine, the menu was an invitation to indulge in unexpected, compelling twists on a thoughtfully curated selection of traditional dishes, infusing familiar flavours into new forms. Below are what we ordered: beef tapa ($25) - MASARAP (DELICIOUS)! Of all the dishes that we ordered, this was the winner of them all as the succulent meat packed a punch of flavour. adobo tofu ($14) - One of Wendell's regular orders, this notable plant-based option, was a tasty, innovative take on the Philippine classic that balanced tradition with modern creativity. laing ($9) - From their platito, small plates section, this bowl of coconut braised taro leaves was rich and creamy deliciousness, but, yes, mini in portion size. garlic rice ($4/$7) - Ordering the garlic rice over plain jasmine rice was a no brainer. Thoroughly infused with the savouriness of the many bits of garlic, this rice perfectly paired with all of the other dishes. bistek ($28) - The skirt steak was very tender and the sauce perfectly balanced the tanginess from the calamansi juice with the savoury soy sauce. lechon kawali ($23) - Another reimagined classic dish featuring crispy, golden pork belly with crunchy skin and tender, flavourful meat inside. The dish was complemented by a tangy, pickled red cabbage that enhanced the crispy texture and added a refreshing contrast. This mastery of flavour and texture tickled Z's tastebuds and won him over. Before this day, Z was never a fan of Filipino food. Everything tasted boldly rich and every bit intensely intoxicated our taste buds. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive. What a remarkably epicurean feast and delightful experience we enjoyed! We're super bummed that Spoon & Pork permanently closed shoppe. Z and I were hoping to return for another tasty meal. Truly, a worthy spot this place was to hit up for an impressively creative taste of the Philippines in Los Angeles.

Every Filipino swears their food is better at home and I'm sure it may be, but we need to appreciate places like this that put our cuisine out there and make it this good! I was very impressed with the flavors and I absolutely loved that they served the bibinka similar to a cornbread because it works! I never thought to eat bibinka with savory foods because it's normally a dessert to me, but it is definitely the icing! All the meats were definitely tasty, but the star that made these proteins pop was the vinegar! My youngest said that's just me being Filipino because he said it didn't need the vinegar, but trust me... make sure to use that vinegar. I can probably drink the vinegar because it's that good! Such a nice option when you want something a little different without going across town. We ordered the coconut beef adobo, pork ribs, and the cornbread bibingka. The coconut beef adobo was definitely the standout for me. It kind of reminded me of Bicol express with a slight tanginess. Super flavorful and really good with steamed rice. The pork ribs were not your typical saucy, sweet, fall off the bone type. These were more dry style with a bark that can be a little tough, but the meat itself was still juicy underneath. The cornbread bibingka was also really good. It felt like the perfect mix of classic cornbread and bibingka, slightly sweet and soft, and the sugar on top was a nice touch. Portions were solid too. My husband and I had enough leftovers for the next day. Overall, really glad we finally got to try it, and we would definitely love to try more of their dishes someday.

At first, the experience can feel a little overwhelming with the open grills, karaoke playing in the background, and the lines of people waiting to grab food. However, I would absolutely say it is worth the wait. The tables turn over fairly quickly, so it does not take long before seats start opening up. Even while waiting in line, one of the workers running the karaoke setup stood outside greeting guests and striking up conversations by asking questions like, "Where are you traveling from?" and "Is this your first time visiting us?" She had such a great personality that it genuinely made my family's experience even more enjoyable. Once you get inside, you grab a tray and start picking out whichever skewers and sticks you want to eat. After paying, you head outside to the grill area where you warm up and char the BBQ skewers yourself. One small thing to keep in mind is paying attention to which direction the smoke is blowing so you do not accidentally end up standing directly in it. The food tasted great once everything was grilled and ready to eat. I would also highly recommend getting some vinegar on the side since the acidity complements the meats really well. Overall, if you are looking for a family-oriented place that makes people feel welcomed regardless of where they come from, I would highly recommend stopping by to experience their hospitality.

A while back, I saw a video of a grip of gen z Fil-Ams talking about how this was their go to spot…read morefor Filipino foods. A lot of them said they fux with the sinigang. Color me confused because I had never heard of her. What rock have I been living under that I'd never heard of this place? So, early one Saturday, I pulled up with my sister from another mister to get our breakfast on. First of all, tell me why they're basically down the street from me. They've been around as long as I've been alive and not once had I been. Truly a shock considering my commitment with never making food at home. I stay eating outside. There was only one other group of diners while we were there. A family of 4 who were seated in the back room. We ended up being seated in the area facing Fountain. My first comment was how I felt like I was at my Lola's house because the decor was giving Lola vibes, in the best way. I felt like I was home. My friend got the laing meal and I got the tocino. We also got a side order of the sweet & spicy longanisa. Broooooooooooooo That food was wow. I'm gonna say it again - it tasted like home. Down to the fixins on the table like vinegar and suchas. I appreciated all the little touches. We ate so much yet still had so much leftovers. Their portion size was crazy. We would've been good with just one meal and another protein a la carte. We also got a small bowl of their arroz caldo. Let me tell you something, a single tear legit went down my left cheek. That tasted like what my mom made for me when she was still with us. The memories that came flooding back took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. We did order their famous empanada that never came. We had to remind our server that he never dropped it off. I'm not sure why he didn't double check if we still wanted them which we did. We would've obviously paid for them. Despite that they're getting all the stars from me because the food was fire and their drinks were 10/10. I got the Maria Clara. They also allow two free refills so that's a double win. I'm about to pull up every weekend. Take all my monies.

Tried this place for the first time with friends earlier today. I ordered Sinigang na Bangus…read more(Milkfish) with garlic rice and I thought it was really good. I felt comforted by the sourness of the Sinigang soup after feeling stressed about my final exam. My friends ordered Tapsilog and Tocilog (tapa and tocino with garlic fried rice) and I was able to try them. The tapa was alright, but the tocino was very delicious. I liked how the tocino wasn't fatty at all. I would recommend the Sinigang and Tocilog to other friends/my family. The service was great. Our server was nice and accommodated us quickly when we needed something. The wait time for the food we ordered wasn't so bad. I also liked the ambiance of the restaurant because it felt like I was inside a family friend's house, which was unique to me. The food is a little on the pricier side for Filipino food, but overall I had a great experience dining here.
